The future of Public Service - in the hands of the youth : A qualitative study on high school students' use of and opinions about Swedish public service.Åberg, Elsa, Andreasson, Alice January 2023 (has links)
Public service media has a big role in the traditional media in Sweden. Historically, they constructed a shared cultural reference and applied news and facts to people to make it possible for them to be educated citizens. However, public service and other traditional media have a difficulty reaching young people today. At the same time young people are the group that consumes the most amount of media. Therefore, it is relevant to study what they consume and what they discard - and why. Especially why they don’t consume the content provided by Swedish public service media. Because if they don’t consume it now, will they in the future? This qualitative study aims to examine how young people in Sweden use public service media and whether they value it as a public service. To do this, we conducted four focus groups with a total of twelve 18-year-olds. The result shows that even though few of them choose to consume content from the public service media, most of them have a positive association of it and value it as a public service. Many said that they trust that they follow their assignment to serve the public and that they produce objective and accurate news. However, the knowledge about the way public service media is organized and financed was shallow at best. It appears that the main reason they don’t consume the content is that they don’t come across it where they consume media. The interviewees that did consume public service media content did so on a different platform such as Spotify or YouTube. So the difficulty in reaching the young audience might not be because of the content, but that they don’t even know of its existence.

A survey study on the relationship between stress and social mediaLundgren, Sofia, Meijner, Josefine January 2023 (has links)
Social media is used all over the world and can, according to research, be a contributing factor to elevated stress levels for individuals that use it. This study aimed to investigate if there was any correlation between social media and stress by studying the variables time spent on social media and stress and how individuals use social medias. To collect data a survey was created with 15questions with background questions, stress, social media and social media usage. The questions consisted of yes or no questions, open answers and multiple-choice questions. A total of 158 individuals participated. The results showed a significant relationship between stress and how often an individual was active on social media; stress and how often individuals interacted with others online; how often individuals post to their social medias; as well as stress and if an individual postpone household chores to use social media. There was no significant relationship between time spent on social media and stress levels. From the participants responses to the free answers a relationship between stress and social media was shown from their own perspective. Factors that heightened the stress levels included comparisons to other individuals online, constantly being available and using social media as a pastime. The individuals who didn't feel any relationship between social media and stress used social media to relax. There was a significant relationship between stress and social media and how you use social medias, but no significant relationship between stress and how much time is spent on social medias.

Litet fokus på risker med covid-19 : Studenters upplevelse av lokal riskkommunikation / Minor Focus on Risks with Covid-19 : Students' Perception of Risk CommunicationKangöz, Sara-Gül, Hellman, Irma January 2020 (has links)
The subject matter of this study is risk perception during a health crisis based on local risk communication. The covid-19-pandemic is a mayor health crisis for citizens all over the world. Prior science has shown that risk communication needs to reach and affect citizens so they can protect themselves from the ongoing risks. Therefore, it is important to study how citizens have perceived the risks of covid-19 from their local communicators. The purpose of this study is to examine how students on a post-gymnasium level in Jönköping municipality understood the risks of covid-19 and intended to act upon their perception of the risks based on the risk communication from Jönköping municipality, during the spring of 2020. The specific period examined is between the 15th of March and the 19th of June 2020. In order to achieve the aim, four focus group interviews with students on a post-gymnasium level in Jönköping have been conducted and analyzed through theoretically based thematic analysis. The theoretical framework used for the analysis of the focus group interviews consists of the Uses and Gratifications Theory, Protection Motivation Theory and Theory of Planned Behavior. The results of the study show that the students perceived the risks of covid-19 as severe, but that they did not intend to fully change their behavior in order to avoid the risks. However, their risk perception was not based on the communication from Jönköping municipality since very few of them had seen their communication during the spring of 2020. Instead, they used sources like the national health authority and news channels. Additionally, the students found the communication from the municipality to be too lighthearted and lacking in vital information. The results show that the students found the municipality’s’ communication about behavioral change as vague and difficult to understand, which didn’t have an impact on their intention to behavioral change.
