Investigating the impact of strengths use on well-being : the mediating role of leader-member exchange / Jolandie Viljoen

Viljoen, Jolandie January 2014 (has links)
Financial institutions are faced with many changes and challenges, especially after the global financial crisis; and look to their human capital to provide their competitive advantage. It is therefore important to investigate effective means of managing employees in a way that could foster work engagement. Strengths use and leader-member exchange (LMX) quality create an opportunity for organisations to manage and utilise their employees more effectively and finally promote work engagement. The objective of this research study was to investigate the mediating effects of LMX quality in the relationship between strengths use and work engagement. A questionnaire was compiled, utilising the Strengths-based Leadership Questionnaire, the LMX-7 and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. These measuring instruments were administered to a total of 213 (N = 213) individuals employed in the financial services industry. For the purpose of this research study the quality of the LMX relationship was measured from the perspective of the subordinates. Strengths use was positively related to LMX quality and LMX quality was positively related to work engagement. Additionally, LMX quality played a mediating role in the relationship between strengths use and work engagement. Therefore, organisations can, by promoting strengths use and high quality LMX, achieve higher levels of employee work engagement. This research study is the first to include strengths use, LMX quality and work engagement in one mediating model. / MCom (Industrial Psychology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Repetitive member factor study for cold-formed steel framing systems

Clayton, Scott January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science / Sutton F. Stephens / Cold-formed steel has become a preferred building material for structural farming in many different types of structures, commonly for repetitive members such as floor joists, roof rafters, roof trusses and wall studs. For wood framed structures with repetitive members, a repetitive member factor increases the allowable bending stress from 1.00 to 1.50 times the reference design value, depending on both the type of material and the type of load. Currently, however, the bending strength of cold-formed steel repetitive members is not permitted to be increased, even though the method of framing is quite similar to that of wood except for the material properties. Typical light-frame wood construction consists of floor, roof, and wall systems, each with repetitive members connected by sheathing. A repetitive system is one of at least three members that are spaced not farther apart than 24-inches. These members must also be joined by a load distributing element adequate to support the design load. The behavior of the individual members, then, is affected by inclusion into this system. Additionally, the connected sheathing increases the bending capacity of bending members due to both composite action and load sharing. Composite action is a result of T-beam-like action between the repetitive member and connected sheathing, but is limited by nail slippage in the connection. Secondly, due to differential deflection between the members, sheathing is also able to distribute loads from weaker, more flexible members to the more rigid and stronger members. This effect is known as load-sharing. The same general principles of repetitive use should apply to cold-formed steel due to its similarity to wood construction. Accordingly, this paper conducts a preliminary study of the effects of both composite action and load-sharing in cold-formed steel assemblies and subsequently recommends using a repetitive member factor for cold-formed steel members.

"Till slut så blir det ett sätt att leva" : En intervjustudie om livssituation och hälsa hos anhöriga till personer med alkoholproblematik / "Eventually it becomes a way of life" : An interview study about life situation and health in family members of people with alcohol problems

Björk, Ida January 2016 (has links)
Background: Alcohol problems is a major problem that affects the individual, family and society. Laws and guidelines states that family members must be offered support. Nurse’s Code of Ethics includes both the individual, family and society. Previous studies have drawn attention to life situation and health of family members of persons with mental illness, but there is a lack of studies of family members of persons with alcohol problems. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the life situation with a particular focus on health in adult family members of persons with alcohol problems. Method: The study has a qualitative design with an inductive approach. Six adult family members of persons with alcohol problems were interviewed individually with semi-structured method by Kvale and Brinkmann. The interview material was analysed using Elo and Kyngäs method of qualitative content analysis. Results: The results from the interviews resulted in four categories: An insecure and responsible life situation, To live for the other and lose yourself, Variety of strong emotions and To move on in life and to reconcile with yourself. Discussions: The study’s method is discussed based on Graneheim and Lundmans quality concepts. Central findings in the results are discussed in relation to previous research and Antonovsky’s theory of sense of coherence (SoC).

Collaborative information technology moderation in dynamic teamwork with team member departure

Keskin, Tayfun 20 October 2010 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation study is to provide the theoretical foundation for collaborative information technology moderation on team performance and give empirical evidence to support this relationship. The model provided in this study is supported by analytical proofs for the proposed hypotheses to define relationships among constructs in this research including departure (reduction in the number of team members), collaborative information technology functionality, transactive memory strength, and team performance. This research offers a theory that utilizes transactive memory systems (TMS) to examine the departure problem. The main research question is: Can collaborative information technologies (CIT) alleviate negative effects of departure? The theory in this study is structured around the indicators of TMS: specialization, coordination, and credibility. Findings showed that CIT functionality level plays a role in enhancing the group performance. This role is not direct but instead, is a moderation effect that alleviates the negative departure impact. In absence of departure, CIT impact can be confusing as it can be either positive or negative. My analytical results explain why information systems literature has had conflicting arguments on the role of technology. I propose that particular dynamic events and incidents, such as employee departure, help us understand the impact of CIT more clearly. Moreover, I employ transactive memory theory to explain how individuals develop and exchange knowledge in a group and how skills and knowledge can be lost due to departure. I also explain why and how team performance benefits from CIT when departure occurs. / text

Revisionsutskott - hur påverkar de revisionskostnaden? : Bevis från Stockholmsbörsen / Audit committees - do they affect the audit fee? : Evidence from the Stockholm stock exchange

Evaldsson, Josef, Mattsson, Elin January 2016 (has links)
Introduction Since 2009 it has been legislated that Swedish listed public companies should establish an audit committee. The law and the code gives the board as a whole the possibility to operate the function of the committee. Former research of audit committee’s effect on audit fee have been made in several countries with various results. In this study, we aim to analyze how audit committees in companies listed on the Stockholm stock exchange can affect the audit fee. Purpose The purpose of this study is to explain how the existence of audit committees and its characteristics affect the external audit fees of companies listed on the Stockholm stock exchange. Method This quantitative study has a cross section design and a deductive approach. By studying documents, the annual reports of the companies listed on the Stockholm stock exchange, data will be collected and then analyzed in regression models. We have operationalized our variables according to former studies and research. The hypotheses have been written on the basis of former research and two perspectives of demand and risk. Conclusion The results in this study show that the existence of audit committees have a positive relationship with audit fee. Also the activeness of the committee has a positive influence on audit fee. The results can be explained by the audit committee, especially active committees, on one hand lowers the overall audit risk but on the other increases the demand of higher audit quality, which outweighs the lowered audit risk.

The stigma of suicide survivorship and related consequences

Hanschmidt, Franz, Lehnig, Franziska, Riedel-Heller, Steffi G., Kersting, Anette 08 December 2016 (has links) (PDF)
Background: Cconsiderable proportion of the population experiences major life disruptions after losing a loved one to suicide. Social stigma attached to suicide survivors adds to complications occurring in the course of suicide bereavement. Despite its known risks, stigma related to suicide survivors has been sparsely investigated. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, PsycInfo and PsyArticles, of studies indexed up through August 2015. Articles were eligible for inclusion if they addressed experiences of stigma in suicide survivors, compared them to other bereavement populations, or investigated stigmatizing attitudes within the public. The search was restricted to English-language studies. Results: 25 records matched inclusion criteria. Study designs were heterogeneous, making comparisons difficult. Results demonstrated that suicide survivors experience stigma in the form of shame, blame, and avoidance. Suicide survivors showed higher levels of stigma than natural death survivors. Stigma was linked to concealment of the death, social withdrawal, reduced psychological and somatic functioning, and grief difficulties. Only one study investigated stigmatizing attitudes towards suicide survivors among the general population. Limitations: Internal and external validity of the studies was restricted by a lack of valid measures and selection bias. Conclusions: More methodologically sound research is needed to understand the impact of stigma on suicide survivors\' grief trajectories and to separate it from other grief aspects. Clinicians and grief-counselors as well as the public should be educated about the persistent stigma experienced by suicide survivors.

SOCIAL TIES AND TEAM-MEMBER EXCHANGE AS ANTECEDENTS TO PERFORMANCE IN NETWORKING GROUPS

Pollack, Jeffrey 06 May 2009 (has links)
The present research examines the role of social ties and team-member exchange quality (TMX) in enabling small business owners involved in formal networking groups to gain access to new business. I report on data from two studies. First, initial data from a pilot study of 23 small business owners in networking groups revealed that more numerous social ties and more positive perceptions of team-member exchange quality (TMX) predicted performance outcomes. Specifically, individuals who had more numerous social ties within a networking group, and who reported higher TMX perceptions of their group, received significantly more referrals to potential clients compared to individuals who had numerous social ties but lower perceptions of TMX. Second, using a sample of 336 small business owners across 24 networking groups I built on these initial results, and incorporated an expanded theoretical framework, to explore how and when social ties and TMX influence the effectiveness of small business owners in networking groups. Specifically, I draw on the literatures related to social network theory, team-member exchange quality and affective organizational commitment to guide my exploration of the effectiveness of small business owners in networking groups. Data support the conclusion that both social ties and team-member exchange are important factors predicting the performance outcomes of small business owners in networking groups. Further, the data illustrate the mediating role of affective organizational commitment between the relation of social ties and team-member exchange on performance outcomes. I discuss implications and describe areas for future research based on these findings.

Veřejná podpora a její vliv na obchod mezi členskými státy EU / Public support and its influence upon the trade among EU Member States

Bulušek, Martin January 2013 (has links)
This thesis focuses on state aid law as a specific part of EU competition law. State aid is therefore primarily set in the context of protection of competition in the EU internal market. Furthermore, the thesis provides an interpretation of Article 107, paragraph 1 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which contains four attributes of state aid: state resources, favoring certain undertaking or the production of certain goods, distortion of competition and effect on trade between EU Member States. Analysis of the attribute "effect on trade between Member States" is made in a separate part of the work. In this section, the work seeks to explore how European Commission and the Court of Justice of the European Union approach and interpret this attribute. Attention is paid especially to decision-making activities of the European Commission in recent years. Decisions of the Commission, as a body authoritatively determining whether a measure constitutes state aid, as well as the compatibility of state aid with the internal market, could also indicate the direction in which the state aid law will develop in the future. The analysis of the Commission's decisions found that not even potentially affects trade between Member States a measure with purely local impact. Such measure will...
