Therefore, taking as base the memories study of the involved inhabitants in the strike and from those who purchase properties in the re-settlement 10 years after its construction, it is noticed current disputes in the life inside the re-settlement as well as in the cities nearby. Those are places that also are part of the territory to be reconstructed. The four chapters that constitute this work, it is highlighted how the conflicts in and through the territories are constituted from politics, economic and identity disputes; they are permeated by the dispute for the past, that is, from the different ways how the past is used for the identity construction and a kind of justification for the right of use of the land and the city / Esta pesquisa de mestrado pretende problematizar a construção de território pelos moradores do reassentamento São Francisco de Assis- Cascavel-Pr, reassentamento rural surgido após movimento de luta de moradores do Sudoeste do Estado do Paraná com o Estado, quando da construção da Hidrelétrica de Salto Caxias.

These people, looking for large and cheap lands, went in big groups to Paraguay between the 1970s and 1980s. Although there is not an accurate number, it is estimated that there were about five hundred thousand migrants in the middle of the 1980s occupying the bordering regions of Paraguay with Brazil. However, in the 1990s, it started an intensive return of these migrants because of a set of economic and political situations that directly affected them in that country. Many of them joined the Landless Worker Movement - MST. The last few decades, in an expressive way, these migrants have returned to the Brazilian cities bordering the regions where they lived in Paraguay. The way how they experiment and relate to the urban context, as well as, the way how they deal and cross such geographic, social and cultural borders are issues approached by this work. The narratives about these experiences reveal trajectories that are being made by the fact of being here and being there , negotiating and coexisting with different social values, identifications and belongings. These men and women look for, in the urban context, new spaces for work, medical assistance, social security and education. The return is many times motivated by the women, whose expectations surpass the material necessities. Therefore they see in the city a possible field to review their position in front of the performance, customs and codes established between genders relations lived in the border situations. Their memories also expressed the existence of sociability nets constructed in a distant time in front of the many needs. Among the needs, there is the necessity of work that has currently been, in the case of the men, the occupation of masons and construction assistant and the women work as house servants / Este trabalho discute experiências transfronteiriças de brasileiros retornados de migrações no Paraguai, conhecidos como , na cidade de Marechal Cândido Rondon, na região Oeste do Paraná. O retorno muitas vezes é motivado pelas mulheres, cujas expectativas ultrapassam as necessidades materiais.

Studies about the implications of social anxiety in false memory

Priscila de Camargo Palma 27 August 2012 (has links)
Mnemonic processes are responsible for keeping all human beings life quality and stability. However, research has shown that such processes can present mistakes and distortions which can change the course of life. False memories are memories of situations and events that did not happen exactly as remembered. At first, it was believed that events which happened and had an associated emotional load could not be distorted; however it is now known that such premise is not necessarily true. Moreover, it is known that the level of disadjustment and emotional instability interfere for a greater number of false memories. Anxiety is a normal adaptive response but it becomes pathologic when it is not proportional to the triggering situation. When anxiety is too intense, it tends to harm all spheres of life, and it acquires a clinical meaning. Amongst the anxiety disorders, there is a prevalent diagnosis called Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). This study aims to compare adult participants who suffer from this problem with adult participants who do not have these symptoms, investigating the effect of emotion in memory performance for an event witnessed. To develop this study, a sequence of eleven slides was used, followed by two narrative versions, one with emotional impact and the other without, besides the Subjective Scale of Emotion, a self-test for memory. The study had 137 participants, who were divided into four groups: individuals who do not suffer from the disorder and emotionally loaded narrative, individuals who do not suffer from the disorder and narrative without emotional load, individuals who suffer from the disorder and emotionally loaded narrative, individuals who suffer from the disorder and narrative without emotional load. Parametrical analysis was carried out using the Variance analysis (ANOVA). All the statistical treatments used an < 0,05 for the hypothesis test and post hoc tests with correction for Bonferroni to identify the possible differences found. The results suggest that participants with SAD who were submitted to a version without emotional impact had higher rates of real memories, according to attentional bias characteristic of this population. Besides, the participants who suffer from Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) had higher rates of false memories who were submitted to a version without emotional impact, suggesting that emotion acted as a protection and suggesting that the social anxiety has a significant action over memory performance.

Abstract: This study was conducted in a school female prison in the state of Rio de Janeiro, seeking through school memories written by prey and some expressive activities of the school, such as the murals produced by them in the year 2012, to understand the meanings of schooling and other issues related to learning. Inspired by the work of Ivor Goodson (2007, 2011), I began to reflect that changes occur in the field of learning was important to link the content of learning a possibility of significant change in the lives of prisoners, it is not enough just to write new prescriptions or curricular. Seeking to deepen the subject, the study sought to rely on the methodology of narrative pedagogy in an attempt to understand the meanings produced in the school experience. Thus became important to understand the process of schooling as strengthening the autonomy of the subject, in the sense of empowerment, so that learning resulted in a strengthening of himself. / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutora em Educação

Memory; The Past and the Present in Toni Morrison's Beloved

Hatami, Azade January 2001 (has links)
In this essay I discuss the notion of memory and its effect on the three main characters of the book "Beloved" by Toni Morrison and additionally how these characters through their individual relationships with a ghost (in the shape of a young woman) are assisted to move towards a healthier life where they can live in the present. The memories of these characters, Sethe, Denver and Paul D, all differ, but still not one of them has the ability to live in the present. For Paul D and Sethe the haunting memories are due to their days as slaves, and additionally for Sethe, the fact that she murdered one of her children. Denver however, is merely the victim of her mother?s memories, and is more or less imprisoned in a monotonous life. The young (ghost) woman, who relieves these characters from their pasts, is though to be the reincarnation of Sethe?s murdered child Beloved. With her arrival, Beloved forces the characters to move away from their stagnated lives through dealing with their memories of the past and simultaneously finding new knowledge about themselves.

TIME-PREDICTABLE FAST MEMORIES: CACHES VS. SCRATCHPAD MEMORIES

Liu, Yu 01 August 2011 (has links)
In modern processor architectures, caches are widely used to shorten the gap between the processor speed and memory access time. However, caches are time unpredictable, especially the shared L2 cache used by different cores on multicore processors. Thus, it can significantly increase the complexity of worst-case execution time (WCET) analysis, which is crucial for real-time systems. This dissertation designs several time-predictable scratchpad memory (SPM) based architectures for both VLIW (Very Long InstructionWord) based single-core and multicore processors. First, this dissertation proposes a time predictable two-level SPM based architecture for VLIW based single-core processors, and an ILP (Integer Linear Programming) based static memory objects allocation algorithm is extended to support the multi-level SPMs without harming the time predictability of SPMs. Second, several SPM based architectures for VLIW based multicore processors are designed. To support these architectures, the dynamic memory objects allocation based partition, the static memory objects allocation based partition and the static memory objects allocation based priority L2 SPM strategy are proposed, which retain the characteristic of time predictability. Also, both the WCET and worst-case energy consumption (WCEC) of our SPM based single-core and multicore architectures are completely evaluated in this dissertation. Last, to exploit the load/store latencies that are statically known in this architecture, we study a SPM-aware scheduling method to improve the performance. Our experimental results indicate the strengths and weaknesses of each proposed architecture and allocation method, which offers interesting memory design options to enable real-time computing. The strength of the two-level architecture is its superior performance compared to the one-level architecture, while the strength of the one-level architecture is its simple implementation. Also, the two-level architecture with separated L1 SPM for each core better fits for the data-intensive real-time applications, which not only retains good performance but also achieves a higher bandwidth by accessing both instruction and data SPM at the same time. Compared to the static based strategies, the dynamic allocation based partition L2 SPM strategy offers the better performance on each core because of the reuse of SPM space at the run-time, but has much higher complexity. In addition, the experimental results show that the timing and energy performance of our proposed SPM based architectures are superior to the similar cache based and hybrid architectures. Meanwhile, our architectures can ensure time predictability which is desirable for the real-time systems.

Scrapbook Memories: History and Memory in Michael Ondaatje's Postmodernist Fiction

Koblyk, Scott Alexander 08 1900 (has links)
The fragmented structures and stories of Michael Ondaatje's postmodernist fiction reflect our perception of the past as we view it through both personal memories and public documents of history. The mnemonic theories of F.c. Bartlett, Ulric Neisser and Roger Schank delineate the ways in which the human mind assembles and reassembles these fragments into useful realizations of the past. Combined with Ondaatje's historiographic metafiction, these theories describe the mnemonic workings of the mind as they reveal themselves in literature. Inherent in the view of the past which underlies the fiction and psychological theories invoked by this thesis is the realization that gaps and distortions are unavoidable in the reconstruction of the past. Working primarily within a theoretical framework provided by Linda Hutcheon and Roland Barthes, this thesis examines the way Ondaatje embraces these areas of ambiguity in the past as the primary locus of his imaginative writing in The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, coming Through Slaughter, In the Skin of a Lion, and The English Patient. Ultimately, the psychological and literary views of memory and history describe and predict Ondaatje's ability to re-animate the past into a living performative existence in the present. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Godself

Darnell, Kyle S 01 May 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis paper supports the Master of Fine Arts exhibition at the Slocumb Galleries, East Tennessee State University, from February 11th through February 15th, 2013. The exhibit is divided into two sections: Reflecting and Remembering. Reflecting is composed of eleven relief woodblock prints depicting a story of the artist as God. Remembering is composed of multi-media pieces that are interpretations of Reflecting. The show Godself explores the influence of memory and self-confidence told through an allegorical tale of the birth and death of Jesus Christ. The discussion of memory and the effect it has on one’s present is told from the perspective of the character Kyle and his transition to a state of being known as the Godself. The following expands on the ideas, influences, techniques, and concepts that helped to create the exhibit.
