Photography in Swedish Memory Institutions : Convergence, Digitization, and the Difficulties of Defining Images

Pierce, Rachel January 2018 (has links)
This study examines how photographic material has been classified and contextualized on the digitization platforms of the major Swedish memory institutions – the National Library of Sweden, the National Archives of Sweden, and the Nordic Museum. Combined with a series of interviews with digitization practitioners at these institutions, the paper examines the cultural-historical approach to defining the concept “photography” and classifying digitized photographs, as well as how photographic material is treated similarly to or differently from other kinds of material housed at these institutions. These results of this question are used to examine the likelihood that, driven by similarities in digitization practices, significant differences between Swedish libraries, archives, and museums are disappearing.

'Nestolichnaya kul'tura' : regional and national identity in post-1961 Russian culture

Donovan, Victoria January 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines the state-sponsored rise of local patriotism in the post-1961 period, interpreting this as part of the effort to strengthen popular support for and the legitimacy of the Soviet regime during the second phase of de-Stalinization. It shifts the analytical focus away from the Secret Speech of 1956, the time of Khrushchev’s full-scale assault on Stalin and his legacy, to the Twenty-Second Party Congress of 1961, the inauguration of a utopian and pioneering plan to build Communism by 1980. The thesis considers how this famously forward-looking programme gave rise to an institutionalized retrospectivism as Soviet policy makers turned to the past to mobilize popular support for socialist construction. It examines how this process played out in the Russian North West, where Soviet citizens were encouraged to turn inwards to examine their local history and traditions, and to reread these through the lens of Soviet socialism. The thesis takes as a case study the towns of Novgorod, Pskov, and Vologda, where the state-sponsored regeneration of local traditions significantly impacted on the self-perception of local communities. In the first part, I look at the strategies for representing and displaying local culture in pubic institutions: the textual treatment and symbolic ordering of urban space in local tourist guides; the heritage movement and the attribution of cultural value to certain objects from the local landscape; and the primary focuses of the exhibitive 'gaze' in local museums. The second part of the thesis shifts the focus from institutionalized culture to popular culture, examining the informal practices and oral traditions that exist alongside the authoritative discourses of social identity in the post-Soviet period. The popular interpretation of public sculpture, the collective imagination of urban space, and the 'common knowledge' of the past as it is articulated in oral narratives are the focuses of discussion.

“How to account for voices not part of decision making” : An Exploratory Study on the Perceptions of Ethical Issues Digitisation Professionals Encounter in Memory Institutions

Nonstad, Elisabeth Kjønsø, Pettit, Jessica Renée January 2024 (has links)
The digital age has ushered in the increased preservation and accessibility of cultural heritage material within memory institutions through the creation of digital reproductions. This study explores individual digitisation professionals' perceptions of ethical issues This study explores individual digitisation professionals' perceptions of ethical issues and ethical guidelines. Employing a survey study in the form of a questionnaire, this exploratory study intends to lay a foundation upon which further research can be done. The questionnaire garnered both qualitative and quantitative data. A small sample of digitisation professionals from Northern Europe and North America were surveyed and the qualitative findings were analysed through the use of a thematic analysis method. This study finds that there is much to consider such as culture, narrative, and individual rights. This study highlights that there is a spectrum of ethical issues faced by digitisation professionals, with a majority of respondents discussing consent, privacy and cultural sensitivity. In discussing the findings, a lens of professional ethics theory is applied to understand how attitudes towards ethical issues and ethical guidelines in digitisation can be understood. This study creates insights into what a group of digitisation professionals perceive as lacking in ethical guidelines regarding digitisation and the ethical issues. Further research in this area is encouraged.

Paměťové instituce na prahu 21. století: mediální jednání Národního filmového archivu a Deutsches Filminstitut / The transformation of memory institutions in Europe and in the CR with focus on their "media acts"

Fridrich, Tomáš January 2014 (has links)
The aim of the thesis "Memory institutions on the threshold of the 21st century: media activities of the National Film Archive and the Deutsches Filminstitut" is to explain the context in which the archives are acting, and in particular explore specific media operations of two leading European film archives. The focus of the first part of the text is to describe the changing conditions mainly related to digitalization. The traditionally rigid institutions must adapt to this new conditions if they want to onform to the standards of cultural institutions of the 21st century. The main part of the text then analyzes the media actions of the National Film Archive and reference institution Deutsches Filminstitut. The thesis analyzes the specific media actions from onlinepresentation of the institution up to the work with journalists and, if necessary, proposes the optimization of existing processes. The reason of focusing just on media activities is the increasing need to develop new audiences, recruited from persons who were up to this moment not interested in the activities of the archives, and last but not least, the fact that a good media activity can be a compelling argument when approaching sponsors from the private sector. In the perspective of continual reduction of state contributions to cultural...
