A new continuum based non-linear finite element formulation for modeling of dynamic response of deep water riser behavior

Hosseini Kordkheili, Seyed January 2009 (has links)
The principal objective of this investigation is to develop a nonlinear continuum based finite element formulation to examine dynamic response of flexible riser structures with large displacement and large rotation. Updated Lagrangian incremental approach together with the 2nd Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor and the Green-Lagrange strain tensor is employed to derive the nonlinear finite element formulation. The 2nd Piola-Kirchhoff stress and the Green-Lagrange strain tensors are energy conjugates. These two Lagrangian tensors are not affected by rigid body rotations. Thus, they are used to describe the equilibrium equation of the body independent of rigid rotations. While the current configuration in Updated Lagrangian incremental approach is unknown, the resulting equation becomes strongly nonlinear and has to be modified to a linearized form. The main contribution of this work is to obtain a modified linearization method during development of incremental Updated Lagrangian formulation for large displacement and large rotation analysis of riser structures. For this purpose, the Green-Lagrange strain and the 2nd Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensors are decomposed into two second-order six termed functions of through-thethickness parameters. This decomposition makes it possible to explicitly account for the nonlinearities in the direction along the riser thickness, as well. It is noted that using this linearization scheme avoids inaccuracies normally associated with other linearization schemes. The effects of buoyancy force, riser-seabed interaction as well as steady-state current loading are considered in the finite element solution for riser structure response. An efficient riser problem fluid-solid interaction Algorithm is also developed to maintain the quality of the mesh in the vicinity of the riser surface during riser and fluid mesh movements. To avoid distortions in the fluid mesh two different approaches are proposed to modify fluid mesh movement governing elasticity equation matrices values; 1) taking the element volume into account 2) taking both element volume and distance between riser centre and element centre into account. The formulation has been implemented in a nonlinear finite element code and the results are compared with those obtained from other schemes reported in the literature.

An interactive boundary layer modelling methodology for aerodynamic flows

Smith, Lelanie 26 June 2012 (has links)
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is a computational tool for exploring flow applications in science and technology. Of central importance in many flow scenarios is the accurate modelling of the boundary layer phenomenon. This is particularly true in the aerospace industry, where it is central to the prediction of drag. Modern CFD codes as applied to modelling aerodynamic flows have to be fast and efficient in order to model complex realistic geometries. When considering viscous flows, the boundary layer typically requires the largest part of computational resources. To simulate boundary layer flow with most current CFD codes, requires extremely fine mesh spacing normal to the wall and is consequently computationally very expensive. Boundary layer modelling approaches offer considerable computational cost savings. One boundary layer method which proved to be very accurate is the two-integral method of Drela (1985). Coupling the boundary layer solution to inviscid external flow, however, is a challenge due to the Goldstein singularity, which occurs as separation is approached. This research proposed to develop a new method to couple Drela‟s two-integral equations to a generic outer flow solver in an iterative fashion. The study introduced an auxiliary equation, which was solved along with the displacement thickness to overcome the Goldstein singularity without the need to solve the entire flow domain simultaneously. In this work, the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations were used for the outer flow. In the majority of previous studies, the boundary layer thickness was simulated using a wall transpiration boundary condition at the interface between viscous and inviscid flows. This boundary condition was inherently non-physical since it added extra mass into the system to simulate the effects of the boundary layer. Here, this drawback was circumvented by the use of a mesh movement algorithm to shift the surface of the body outward without regridding the entire mesh. This replaced the transpiration boundary condition. The results obtained show that accurate modelling is possible for laminar incompressible flow. The predicted solutions obtained compare well with similarity solutions in the case of flat and inclined plates, and with the results of a NACA0012 airfoil produced by the validated XFOIL code (Drela and Youngren, 2001). Reduced order modeling techniques for mesh movement as applied to fluid structure interactions

Bogaers, Alfred Edward Jules 11 August 2010 (has links)
In this thesis, the method of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) is implemented to construct approximate, reduced order models (ROM) of mesh movement methods. Three mesh movement algorithms are implemented and comparatively evaluated, namely radial basis function interpolation, mesh optimization and elastic deformation. POD models of the mesh movement algorithms are constructed using a series of system observations, or snapshots of a given mesh for a set of boundary deformations. The scalar expansion coefficients for the POD basis modes are computed in three different ways, through coefficient optimization, Galerkin projection of the governing set of equations and coefficient interpolation. It is found that using only coefficient interpolation yields mesh movement models that accurately approximates the full order mesh movement, with CPU cost savings in excess of 99%. We further introduce a novel training procedure whereby the POD models are generated in a fully automated fashion. The technology is applicable to any mesh movement method and enables potential reductions of up to four orders of magnitude in mesh movement related costs. The proposed model can be implemented without having to pre-train the POD model, to any fluid-structure interaction code with an existing mesh movement scheme. Methodenentwicklung zur Simulation von Strömungen mit freier Oberfläche unter dem Einfluss elektromagnetischer Wechselfelder

Beckstein, Pascal 16 February 2018 (has links) (PDF)
