"You fellars does live in a dream world.": Krize identity v karibské próze Sama Selvona / "You fellars does live in a dream world.": Identity Crisis in Sam Selvon's Caribbean FictionKarayel, Hikmet Işıl January 2021 (has links)
The thesis aims to analyse Sam Selvon's fiction between 1950 and 1990 in relation to the colonial subjects' identity crisis. The thesis will argue that Selvon's fiction is independent of traditional and canonical categories because his representation of colonial subjects is entirely innovative and unprecedented. I will analyse Selvon's novels A Brighter Sun (1952), An Island is a World (1955), The Lonely Londoners (1956), The Housing Lark (1965), Moses Ascending (1975), and Moses Migrating (1983). Each novel sheds light on a different facet of the colonial subject. Nevertheless, colonisation, migration, and identity crisis are common themes for the novels chosen. From A Brighter Sun to Moses Migrating, Selvon destroys the caricatured image of the colonised subject. He reaches authenticity on the level of character depiction and through the vernacular, ballad-like narrative. Additionally, the novels represent different aspects of colonisation and migration: "back at home", "the motherland", and "back and forth". I will display how every aspect is fluid and undefinable. A Brighter Sun takes place in the West Indies. An Island is a World displays "back and forth" experience in the West Indies, USA, and Britain. The Lonely Londoners, The Housing Lark, and Moses Ascending take place in "the motherland"....

"České CHicago" - etnohistorický pohled na vývoj českého etnika v americkém městě v letech 1852-1945 / Čzech Chicago" - Ethnohistorical View of the Development of the Czech Minority in the American City in the years 1852-1945Kříž, Jaroslav January 2022 (has links)
During the migration waves in the 19th century many Czechs immigrated to America. One of their final destinations was the city of Chicago. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries this became the largest Czech occupied base abroad. Over a hundred thousand Czechs lived in Chicago at that time so it was therefore considered to be the third largest Czech city. The topic of the dissertation thesis is the analysis the course of Czech migration to Chicago and the related development of the Czech minority. Key attention is devoted to the socio-cultural, economic and political development of the Czech minority in terms of ethno-historical methods. Furthermore, the author will focus on important historical milestones and events of this city, which in some way influenced the Czech minority. Time definition of work is 1852-1945 and follows from a historical perspective, because the first Czech immigrants arrive in greater numbers to this American territory only in the fifties of the 19th century. On the other hand, the Second World War concludes a period that was important for the Czech ethnic group in Chicago. After 1945 there is a significant assimilation process (the Czech minority is massively Americanized) and the Czech expatriate center is declining in importance.

Cortijeros en La Alpujarra: Od lifestylové migrace k úvahám o pozitivní antropologii / Cortijeros en La Alpujarra: From the Lifestyle migration to Thinking about a Positive AnthropologyVarhaník Wildová, Kateřina January 2017 (has links)
Lifestyle migrants from the affluent North move to the Mediterranean region intensively from the 80's. Lifestyle migration to Spain takes different forms: here we meet rich yacht owners in Marbella, retired people in the housing complexes in Almuñecar, or surfers in Tarifa. This work focused on people, who chose their new place in the region of La Alpujarra. They live in the remote houses called cortijos, which gave name to their inhabitants - cortijeros. Their lifestyles are the subject of this work, together with more general strategies practiced in lifestyle migration, the skills needed in such a move, and values they pursue. Ten years of research enabled to get together both, opinions and plans of the newcomers in the region, and their activities, stories, and imprints in the real world. I try to present different perspectives: the lens of lifestyle migration, counter-urbanization, material culture anthropology, history, positive psychology. At the end, I propose to think a positive anthropology that would focus on studying such practices that seemed to work towards understanding "the good life"; that work towards both individual well-being, and creating social structures considerate to humans and the environment.

Úloha sulfhydryl oxidázy 1 v karcinogenezi / Role of sulfhydryl oxidase 1 in cancerogenesisBeranová, Lea Marie January 2019 (has links)
Disulfide bridges play a significant role in protein-folding as well as en- zyme activity and thus regulate many intra- and extracellular processes. Sulfhydryl oxidase QSOX1 forms S-S bridges de novo, modulating the activity of its substrates and thus directly or indirectly influences vital cel- lular processes. The first part of this thesis focuses on characterization of the role of QSOX1 in cancerogenesis, using breast cancer cell lines (MCF7, MDA-MB-231) and pancreatic cancer cell line (Panc-1), while the second part emphasizes the regulation of QSOX1 expression by different oxygen concentrations. To study the effect of QSOX1 on proliferation of triple-negative cancer cells MDA-MB-231, two genetically modified cell lines - QSOX1-overexpressing and QSOX1 knockout cell lines - were constructed. While increased QSOX1 protein levels do not have a significant effect, the absence of QSOX1 leads to a decreased cellular growth. Lack of QSOX1 also results in visible change in cellular morphology. QSOX1 knockout cells can be mostly characterized as more round-shaped with less noticeable or completely missing lamellipo- dia. This finding is with agreement with to-date literature suggesting that QSOX1 is important not only for cellular proliferation but also for migration and invasiveness. While authenticating the theory of...

Migrace a potírání jejích nelegálních forem : dosahují neregulérní migranti v EU dostatečné právní ochrany na úrovni Úmluvy OSN o ochraně práv všech migrujících pracovníků? / Tackling irregular forms of migration: irregular migrants in the European Union - do they enjoy the rights contained in the UN Migrant Workers Convention?Babická, Karolína January 2012 (has links)
The UN Migrant Workers Convention (CMW) that provides for fundamental human rights for migrant workers and members of their families has been adopted in 1990. Until today, none of the EU Member States has signed or ratified it. The EU Member States argue that there is no need for them to accede to the CMW, as, inter alia, the rights contained in it are already secured by other international human rights instruments and in the EU legal instruments. Additionally to the claim of the CMW redundancy for the current EU legal framework, the Member States have several times repeated the fear that the ratification of the CMW could give irregular migrants more rights and increase irregular migration to the EU. Inspired by these two in fact contradictory arguments, this research aims to explore the scope of irregular migrants related human rights protection under international and European law and verify the basis of the EU Member states claims by comparing the scope of rights of irregular migrant workers in the EU with the standards embedded in the CMW. The main research questions posed are What human rights are the irregular migrants entitled to in the EU, based on international and European legal instruments? Is the CMW indeed redundant and unnecessary in the legislative framework of the European Union or is it...

The research shows an important role of the non-financial motivating factors. The central topic of research became the social status, especially the prestige and related respect. The reasons for migration are introduced with the theoretical help of the Push and pull factors theory. The research is based on a series of semi-structured interviews with participants who intend to migrate after the graduation. Since this thesis is focused on the perspective of the main actors of the phenomenon, the migrants, it introduces the diversity of their attitudes to the reasons for migration. The main finding is the importance of the role of respect in the particular everyday situations, which is reflected in the several of ascertained types of motivating factors to migrate.
