Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This thesis aimed to investigate how subjectivities are built considering the experience of migration of military women. For that, two papers were written: "Construction of subjectivity in military women who migrate alone" and "Comings and goings: production of subjectivities in the migration of military women in the Air Forces". In the first one, a theoretical analysis of the construction of subjectivity in the migration processes of military women was carried out. Also, the ways in which subjectivities are constructed in the headquarters were discussed under the light of the Theory of Social Representations. In this analysis, it was concluded that the sharing that resulted from the migration process has implications both in women's lives and in the institutions. In the second paper, the experience reports of six military women of the Air Forces were analyzed. In this paper, in addition to the concept of subjectivity proposed by the Theory of Social Representations, gender theories were also used to support the analysis. The general findings were that the migration of women in the military context fosters the dynamic characteristics of the social representations both from the military institution towards women, and from women towards the military institution. Moreover, the experiences these women go through as military migrants who are alone make them more autonomous; however, the condition of being alone in an unfamiliar place triggers attitudes of maintenance of a limiting gender culture, which does not consider women's right to come and go. / Esta dissertação teve como objetivo compreender de que forma subjetividades são construídas a partir da experiência de migração de mulheres militares. Para tanto, elaboramos 2 artigos: “Construção de subjetividade em mulheres militares que migram sós” e “Encontros e despedidas: produção de subjetividade nas experiências de migração de mulheres militares da Aeronáutica”. No primeiro artigo realizamos uma análise teórica do processo de construção de subjetividade que se dá nos processos de migração de mulheres militares. Sob o referencial da Teoria das Representações Sociais, discutimos sobre as formas pelas quais subjetividades são construídas no espaço do quartel. Em nossa análise, percebemos que o compartilhamento oriundo do processo de migração traz implicações tanto na vida das mulheres, quanto nas instituições. No segundo artigo analisamos os relatos sobre as experiências de migração de 6 mulheres militares da Aeronáutica. Neste trabalho, além da noção de subjetividade pelo viés da Teoria das Representações Sociais, utilizamos as teorias de gênero para sustentar nossas análises. Como achados gerais, percebemos que a migração de mulheres no contexto militar propicia a dinamicidade das representações sociais tanto da instituição militar em relação às mulheres, quanto também das mulheres em relação à instituição militar. Além disso, percebemos que as experiências por que passam na condição de sós, militares e migrantes as constroem como mulheres mais autônomas; entretanto, a condição de estar sozinha em um lugar desconhecido aciona atitudes que remetem à manutenção de uma cultura de gênero limitante, que não percebe as mulheres como também portadoras do direito de ir e vir.

Således ämnar studien tillatt synliggöra faktorer som möjliggör och hindrar militära kvinnor i karriärutvecklingen inomFörsvarsmakten. Den metodologiska utgångspunkten är en kvalitativ ansats bestående avsamtalsintervjuer, kompletterat med en sekundäranalys. Den teoretiska referensramenutnyttjas som förklaringsverktyg för forskningens olika problemområden. Teorierna är,Yvonne Hirdmans teori om genuskontraktet, Rosabeth Moss Kanters organisationsmodell ochJoan Ackers organisationsteori. Studien mynnar ut i åtta faktorer som önskar att öka förståelseför vad som påverkar militära kvinnors karriärer inom Försvarsmakten. De identifieradekarriärmöjligheterna är således val av utbildning, chans till utveckling och utmaning. De femkarriärhindren är organisationskultur, kontrakt, brist på flexibilitet, chans till utveckling ochutmaning. / This study sheds light on military women's career experiences. The study aims to highlightfactors that enables and creates barriers for military women in the Swedish Armed Forces.The methodological approach is based on a qualitative method with interviews, along with asecondary analysis. The theoretical frame is used to seek an explanation for the research area.The theories are, Yvonne Hirdman’s theory of the gender contract, Rosabeth Moss Kanter’sorganizational model and Joan Acker’s organizational theory. The study formulates eightfactors that affects military women’s careers within the Swedish Armed Forces with the wishto increase an understanding. The identified career opportunities are therefore option ofeducation, chance for development and the last is challenge. Furthermore, five career barrierswas also identified, organizational culture, contract, lack of flexibility, chance fordevelopment and challenge.

Sisters in Arms: A case study of the experiences of women warriors in the United States Military

Abstract Presently there are few studies that describe the current experiences of women warriors relative to issues such as sexual hostility, sexual harassment, and other uncommon experiences during their military careers. Very little is known about how being a woman in a male-dominated military may affect women warriors' choices between making the military a career or returning to civilian life. With better understanding of women warriors' military experiences, mental health professionals, educators, and other human services professionals may have a better understanding of the issues that may affect women in the military. To date there are limited studies that have examined the effects of military experiences on the psychological and emotional well-being of women warriors. Whether its effects are positive, negative, contextual, or permanent is not yet known. This study supports the earlier research regarding the needs and unknown needs of women programs and the training of counselors and helping professionals. With the United States Military being one of the largest special populations, and women warriors making up 15% of that population, it is imperative that appropriate training becomes available for counselors, educators, and other helping professionals.
