Identifying Long Period Variable (LPV) Stars Using Images from the Stardial Observatory

Friedman, Vanessa Ann January 2009 (has links)
The study of variable stars is extremely important to the astronomical field of scientific research. Variable stars must be methodically studied, usually by amateur astronomers over a long period of time, in order to provide professional astronomers important data that allows them to further analyze variable star behavior.Variable stars are unique because their pulsation produces visible changes in luminosity. This pulsation allows amateur astronomers to visually observe and identify variable stars. This type of research and study is special because amateurs can make a real contribution to the field. My objective was to become an amateur astronomer in the hopes that I could discover variable stars and contribute my findings to the greater astronomical scientific community. In completing this task, my overall goal was to better understand the true nature of science in order to improve my teaching in a secondary science classroom.

Optical Interferometry and Mira Variable Stars

Ireland, Michael James January 2005 (has links)
This thesis describes the development of a red tip/tilt and fringe detection system at the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI), modelling the instrumental performance and effects of seeing at SUSI, making observations of Mira variable stars and finally modelling the atmospheres of Mira variables with physically self-consistent models. The new SUSI tip/tilt system is based around a CCD detector and has been successfully used to both track the majority of tip/tilt power in median seeing at an R magnitude of 4.5, and to provide seeing measures for post processing. The new fringe-detection system rapidly scans 33 to 140 $\mu$m in delay and detects the fringes using two avalanche-photodiodes. It has been used to acquire fringe data, provide user feedback and to track the fringe group-delay position. The system visibility (fringe visibility for a point source) and throughput were found to be consistent with models of the SUSI optical beam train. Observations were made of a variety of sources, including the Mira variables R Car and RR Sco, which were observed in two orthogonal polarization states. These measurements were the first successful use of Optical Interferometric Polarimetry (OIP), and enabled scattered light to be separated from bright photospheric flux. Dust scattering was found to originate from a thin shell 2-3 continuum radii from these stars, with an optical depth of 0.1 to 0.2 at 900 nm. Physical models of Mira variables including dust formation were developed, providing consistent explanations for these results as well as many other photometric and interferometric observations.

No. of bitstreams: 1 SANDRA CHECRUSKI SOUZA.pdf: 14500557 bytes, checksum: dda4119ce73fba7bb2d5d00149f98511 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-09-29 / The present paper aims to reflect about the creative process of visual artist Leya Mira Brander (born 1976 in São Paulo), in an attempt to unwrap the gestures that turn her unique as a printmaker. Among the various possibilities of cropping, we chose the approach of the technical procedures involved in the making of images, the relationship between image and memory and the use of the word as a poetic recurrence. Divided into three chapters, the first one examines the making of the engraving in its implications and consequences, and the montage and procedural methodology in her work, based on theoretical considerations by Georges DidiHuberman and Walter Benjamin. The second chapter addresses the compositional visual elements of the artist's work in the light of image and memory, emphasizing her thematic preferences and references involving the gestures of citation and metamorphosis. The result are images that derive from her own universe as well as from the mention of icons in the history of art. In the same chapter, we also seek to reflect on the legacy of irony and allegory present in her work, whose theoretical shield poured the writings of Giorgio Agamben and Pedro Duarte. The third and final chapter is intended to place the word and its uses in the creation of the artist process, ending with words that manifest as reports of love, analyzed in the light of the writings of Roland Barthes.

Rojas Líbano, Macarena January 2006 (has links)

This figure is present not only in his book published in Spanish Mira-Coeli and in the Portuguese version Anunciação e Encontro de Mira-Celi, but in every poetic work of Jorge de Lima subsequent to them. The present work aims to investigate what this reference figure, and if it has in it its own reference, what it represents in the field of human experience. For that, it was related to the construction of the work studied, a poetic work, with the accomplishment of a musical work, since music is also a kind of language that has its own reference in itself. In the work, it is stated that this process of signification is a way of representing what, in Aristotelian-Thomist psychology, is called a volitional appetite and it is concluded that the figure of Mira-Celi has the function of stating the purity of will and consciousness in the midst of earthly dramas / É possível enxergar ao longo da obra de Jorge de Lima, principalmente após o que a crítica recorrentemente chama de “fase católica”, a presença da figura de uma mulher mística, objeto de amor da voz que fala no poema.

Ultrasonic Tomography for Detecting and Locating Defects in Concrete Structures

White, Joshua 2012 May 1900 (has links)
This thesis evaluates a particular ultrasonic nondestructive testing (NDT) system in order to determine its capabilities and limitations in locating defects in concrete structures; specifically tunnel linings, bridge decks, and pavements. The device, a phased-array ultrasonic tomography (UST) system that utilizes shear waves, is a significant advancement in NDT systems. Consequently, there is a need in structural engineering to verify new technologies by assessing their flaw-detecting capabilities in a variety of structural applications. The UST technique does not currently have a testing methodology that is field-ready. In order to develop a methodology, the system was evaluated based on its ability to detect simulated defects, then taken to the field to evaluate natural structural defects on public tunnels, pavements, and airport runways. Types of concrete defects the system is used to detect and localize include air- and water-filled voids, vertical cracks, horizontal delaminations, and abnormalities such as clay lumps. The device is also used to determine reinforcement depth and spacing as well as concrete thickness measurements. This research concludes that the UST system is exceptional at locating horizontal delaminations ranging from 0.05-2.0 mm (0.002-0.079 in.), and is able to differentiate between fully debonded and partially-bonded areas. Vertical cracks could only be detected once they begin to form parallel to the testing surface; however, omission of surface details was found to be a strong indicator of crack presence. Backwall surfaces up to a depth of 762 mm (30 in.) were successfully and accurately determined. Air- and water-filled voids as well as reinforcement details such as layout and depth were also successfully determined and located. With the exception of some medium-sized clay lumps (with a diameter of approximately 102 mm, or 4 in.) surrounding reinforcement, all clay lumps tested were also highly successful.
