Imaginative Geographies and State Reliance: Examining Taiwan's Shanyuan Bay and Miramar ResortChen, Timothy 23 February 2016 (has links)
The development of Miramar Resort in Taitung, Taiwan has attracted much debate and attention in the past ten years. The case contains themes of rural poverty, indigenous agency, environmental protection, and economic development; therefore, any potential outcome has far-reaching and deeper implications for the local rural and indigenous residents but also for Taiwanese society’s future approaches to similar development projects which appear to pit economic development against environmental protection and indigenous rights. Through qualitative interviews, this case study examines dynamics of power and agency from an environmental justice standpoint, focusing on the themes of how landscape perception is shaped and utilized by outsiders to gain agency and how reliance of rural communities upon the state serve as a limiting force in their development. Such dynamics have shaped responses to the Miramar case and can reinforce existing inequalities if not considered critically.

Previous issue date: 2008-12-04 / This essay aims to achieve a possible reading of the novel, Memórias Sentimentais de João Miramar, from the theoretical concepts of film, from Eisenstein's theory of montage, once we see the need for a technique of montage in reading the chapters-fragments in this novel. In addition to the theory of montage of Eisenstein s movie, this research will also use the concept of image from Ezra Pound theory of imagism in order to understand the process of condensing the image used in Oswald de Andrade novel. We also analyze the process of metonymy, caused by telegraphic language used in the novel, and the possible presence of cubism in the concatenation of its chapters and juxtaposition-pieces in order to corroborate the theory that Oswald de Andrade anticipates several concepts of modern literary theory, creating, therefore, a real poetry of visuality in his work / Esta dissertação tem por objetivo alcançar uma possível leitura do romance, Memórias Sentimentais de João Miramar, a partir das concepções teóricas do cinema Eisensteiniano, uma vez que constatamos a necessidade de uma técnica de montagem na leitura dos capítulos-fragmentos presentes na obra oswaldiana.

zona.

在自己的土地上漂流: 臺灣美麗灣度假村開發案爭議的民族誌研究 / Rafting on Their Own Land:Ethnography of Development and Conflict on the Miramar Resort, Taitung, Taiwan卡伊, Kayi Aslan Demirtas Unknown Date (has links)
This research explores the dimensions and interactions of the Amis community under the Miramar Resort (MR) Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) development project authorized by the local county government through an ethnographic approach on the construction of a traditional bamboo raft in the township of Dulan, Taitung, Taiwan. The content of this study includes (1) A status review of the BOT policy in general and the MR development project in particular, (2) A detailed account of the local Amis community’s opposition to the project, and (3) Suggestion on alternative methods of land management. My fieldwork includes participant observation in the context of seminar meetings and activist demonstrations. However the centerpiece of the research at Dulan revolves around my personal participation in the construction of an Amis traditional bamboo raft and its launching into the ocean. Conclusions offer alternative ways for the development of an area that is interactive with indigenous peoples and outside commercial interests. The perspective taken is aimed at alleviating conflict through incorporating the views of stakeholders in the best interests of all parties involved.
