abstract: Yuko Uébayashi is a composer who was born in Japan and presently resides in France. She composed Misericordia for Flute and String Quartet for Carol Wincenc in 2013. The National Flute Association (NFA), the most active flute society in America, hosted the Misericordia performance during its annual convention in Chicago in 2014. Uébayashi’s flute works have not only been frequently performed at NFA conventions, but also at other well-known flute festivals since 2006, the year of her U.S. debut. Many current flutists are motivated to learn and play her compositions; however, there is little published literature about her works. Understanding her unique compositional style and obtaining a better knowledge of her music and compositional practices will help flutists and other musicians better perform and enjoy her music. With a performance guide and a detailed discussion of Misericordia, flutists and other musicians will understand why Uébayashi’s music is unique and why it is increasingly well-loved by so many players. Enfoca, mais especificamente, as práticas de assistência e proteção instituídas pela Santa Casa de Misericórdia, como o Asilo dos Expostos, as amas de leite, a Roda dos Expostos, o Berçário e o Lactário. As análises tomam como base as reflexões de Michel Foucault acerca do biopoder e biopolítica, para discutir as mudanças, intervenções e transformações ocorridas em São Paulo, bem como as questões relativas à caridade, filantropia e à dinâmica do Asilo. As fontes de pesquisa são, basicamente, os relatórios da mordomia, escritos pelos administradores do Asilo, os mordomos dos expostos. Porém, outras fontes primárias são analisadas como jornais e a legislação, na perspectiva de entender a implementação de uma série de serviços que partiram da Santa Casa, seus médicos e administradores, com o objetivo de enfrentar os inúmeros problemas que emergiam na cidade. / Abstract: Among the many strategies put into play between the late nineteenth and early twentieth, with a view to ordering the city of Sao Paulo and the changes in the customs of its residents, this research is directed to the problem of abandoned children. Focuses, more specifically, the practical assistance and protection established by the Santa Casa de Misericórdia, as the Asylum of the Displayed, the wet nurses, the "Roda dos Expostos", the Nursery and the Breast Pump Room. The analysis takes as the basis of Michel Foucault's reflections on biopower and biopolitics, to discuss the changes, interventions and transformations occurring in Sao Paulo, as well as issues relating to charity, philanthropy and the dynamics of the Asylum. Research sources are basically the reports of fridge benefits written by managers of the Asylum, the exposed's butlers. However, other primary sources are analyzed as newspapers and legislation with a view to understand the implementation of a range of services that have left Santa Casa, their doctors and administrators, in order to tackle the numerous problems that emerged in the city. / Doutorado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Doutor em Educação

[pt] O tema da misericórdia é estudado a partir do que é apresentado no Livro de Walter Kasper A Misericórdia – Condição fundamental do Evangelho e chave da vida Cristã , com elementos para o aprofundamento do conhecimento da misericórdia de Deus, nas Escrituras, no ensinamento e na vida da Igreja, e sua ação dentro da Igreja e no mundo. Juntamente com o estudo de Kasper, a dissertação procura verificar o ensinamento do Papa Francisco no ano do Jubileu Extraordinário da Misericórdia. A dissertação destaca elementos do livro de Kasper e ênfases do ensinamento do Papa Francisco, em principais documentos pontífícios no ano jubilar, como a Bula Misericordiae Vultus que abre o ano da misericórdia e a carta apostólica Mirecordie et Misera fechando o ano e em audiências. Em Kasper e em Francisco apresentam-se questões importantes para o agir do cristão no mundo. A Escritura mostra a misericórdia de Deus. A misericórdia está na obra salvífica de Deus. A misericórdia deve estar na fé e na vida dos cristãos. O diálogo da misericórdia será necessário para levar a ação da misericórdia de Deus para uma cultura da misericórdia e para a evangelização do mundo. A Igreja deve receber a misericórdia de Deus e anunciar com palavras e obras da misericórdia e nos sacramentos. É necessário ter atenção com o sacramento da reconciliação onde a pessoa se encontra com o perdão e a misericórdia de Deus. / [en] The theme of mercy is studied from what is presented in Walter Kasper s book Mercy-The essential condition of the Gospel and the Key to the Christian Life with elements for deepening the knowledge to God s mercy in the Scriptures, in the teaching and in the life at Church, and its action within the Church and in the world. Together with Kasper s study, the thesis seeks to verify the teaching of Pope Francis by year during Jubilee extraordinary of Mercy. See the deepening of mercy in the main section of the Pope s hearings in this jubilee. The dissertation highlights elements of Kasper s book and emphases of the teaching of Pope Francis with pontifical texts in the jubilee year, as in the Bull Misericordiae Vultus that the year of mercy was opened and the apostolic letter Misericordia and Misera closing the jubilee year. In Kasper and Francis are presented important questions for the action of the Christian in the world. Scripture shows the mercy of God. Mercy is in the saving work of God. Mercy must be in the faith and life of Christians. The dialogue of mercy will be necessary to bring the action of God s mercy to a culture of mercy and to the evangelization of the world. The Church must receive the mercy of God and proclaim with words and works of mercy and the sacraments. Within this framework, attention will need to be paid, among other things, the sacrament of reconciliation where one encounters the forgiveness and the mercy of God.

As Santas Casas da Misericórdia eram irmandades leigas, de direto patrocínio régio, restritas a homens que se organizavam em torno da realização de obras de caridade. Criada originalmente em Portugal, sua influência e poderio se espalhou por todo império português, tornando-as palco das disputas em torno da expressão da caridade pessoal, de estratégias locais de poder e clientelismo e de projetos de colonização. Através da comparação dos casos dos recolhimentos do Rio de Janeiro, Salvador e Porto a presente tese procura discutir o auxílio prestado às órfãs conjugando as implicações religiosas e morais, os valores e as relações de poder e hierarquia social que estavam em jogo no estabelecimento e funcionamento dessas instituições de recolhimento e casamento de meninas órfãs presentes no Reino e no Ultramar / Abstract: Throughout the XVIII century an increasing number of institutions, both in Portugal and overseas, began to shelter and to give out dowries to orphan girls. Most of theses shelters were managed by the Irmandade da Misericórdia. The Santas Casas da Misericórdia were lay brotherhood under the auspices of the Portuguese Crown. They were restricted to male individuals who aimed to carry out charitable work. Originally created in Portugal, its power and influence were spread throughout the Portuguese empire. Renaissance marriage is a much-studied subject, yet little attention has been given to the influence of marital practice on the civic affairs of confraternities. By considering the decisions of the Venetian Scuola dei Mercanti confraternity through the lens of Venetian marriage practice, I demonstrate how the Mercanti employed a multi-alignment advancement strategy in a manner similar to that employed by marriage partners seeking upward social mobility. Specifically, I argue that the Mercanti’s maneuvers were carried out for the purpose of transforming itself from a scuola piccolo to a scuola grande. Viewed from this perspective, the Mercanti’s artistic and architectural commissions appear as carefully executed maneuvers designed to elevate its social status. To demonstrate this thesis, I outline the Mercanti’s strategy of aligning with the neighboring Madonna dell’Orto church, the prominent architect Palladio and, especially, the older, established Scuola Grande della Misericordia.

A Misericórdia era uma irmandade leiga, de direto patrocínio régio, restrita a homens que se organizava em tomo da realização de obras de caridade. Esta dissertação procura discutir o auxílio prestado as órfas conjugando as implicações religiosas e morais, os valores expressos e as circunstâncias da colônia e do reino que estavam em jogo no estabelecimento desta instituição de recolhimento e casamento de meninas órfãs / Abstract: The Recolhimento das Órfãs was the first institution devoted to the education and marriage of orphan girls established in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It began its activities during the year of 1739 under the protection and supervision of the brotherhood of Our Lady of Mercy. The brotherhood, which counted upon royal patronage, was composed mainly by men of the laity and elite of the city, who gathered to perform various acts of charity aimed at the poor and honorable. The brotherhood of Our Lady was created in Portugal and spread throughout the Portuguese Empire, becoming a locus for political and economical disputes over the different strategies of colonization. The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the religious, moral and political implications as well as the values, gender relations and social circumstances at stake in the charitable work aimed at the education and marriage of orphan girls in colonial Brazil / Mestrado / Mestre em História
