A Mobile Service Environment for Handheld Devices

Lin, Kuo-Chang 16 July 2002 (has links)
In this paper, we design an integrated mobile service environment (MSE) for the handheld devices (e.g., PDAs). The integral MSE is a coherent and intact service architecture built on the front-end (handheld devices), which allow the mobile users to choose and subscribe their request services provided by the Service Provider. The architectures of MSE consist of desktop agent (DA) and service agent (SA) at the top layer, communication layer at the bottom layer and a virtual machine (VM) layer between them. Desktop agent is used as the user interface and responsible for the local process management; service agent is downloaded from the back-end server to the client. The communication layer adopts XML-RPC as the communication protocol between the client and back-end server. The XML-RPC data size is reduced by our compression mechanism to shorten the transmission time. The virtual machine supports cross-platform operation for the top layer. Besides, we devise a cache mechanism to automatically store recently used and reused SAs in the limited space of handheld devices. This cache mechanism can let the mobile users get the SA they want efficiently. Finally, we implement a real-time stock transaction system to experiment the performance and the applicability of our MSE architecture.

Development of a map service

Huang, Xiaotie (Anthony) January 2007 (has links)
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) a computerized mapping system for capturing, storing, retrieving, analysing, and displaying spatial data (the type of data that has a geographic location). It is one of the fastest growing high tech fields and has been widely used in my areas where analysis of spatial referenced data is needed. In this paper we developed and implemented a GIS-based personalized Travel Planning application. Our goal is to provide a map based information system that gives recommendation information (e.g. closeby sights, must-see sights) to travellers according to their destinations, locations and preferences. Furthermore, the TP application was developed as a client-side service under the Tourist Information Provider System. It runs on client machines and uses the spatial referenced data stored at the TIP server-side database.

Etude des Modèles d’Implémentation des Opérateurs de Réseaux Mobiles Virtuels/Study of Implementation Models of Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO)

Cuvelliez, Charles 09 March 2006 (has links)
This thesis addresses the phenomena of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO): often MVNO do not come from the telecom sector but they rent the network to mobile operators to become fully mobile operators on their own. So they compete directly not only with the other mobile operators but also with their hosting mobile operator. Hosting MVNOs, supporting them from both operational and commercial perspectives are new challenges for the mobile operators: they have to set up a specific internal organization because they used to be a vertically integrated industrial structure. All of this represents tremendous changes for them. This thesis describes first the strategic models for hosting MVNOs. The regulatory aspects, that are an essential driver for the liberalization of network economies, are then analyzed. The key point is: are the MVNO able to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of mobile markets. Another important aspect is the modelling of a mobile network: the MVNOs will use some components while other components are unuseful for them. Without such model, it is impossible to derive the right costs and price to be charged to the MVNO in order to have a win win industrial model for both the MVNO and its hosting operator. A case study of a corporate MVNO focusing on needs of multinationals is analyzed. Such case study describes all the steps for an economic actor to become MVNO from scratch. Such MVNO are not yet present although there is a market demand. The last chapter makes a comparative study of the MVNO markets in the European Union.

User attitude towards purchasing mobile service

Li, Hsiao-wei 12 July 2009 (has links)
Along with the emerging mobile telecommunication¡@technology, mobile telecommunication industry has developed the different service from the traditional pronunciation communication. Applications of multimedia, data transmission and so on have changed people's life greatly. For consumer, the mobile phone is not only the telephone conversation machine, but also is one kind of drawing close to life tool, the status symbol. The demand of mobile device has transforms from the traditional functionality demand into the psychological stratification. They starts to care about what service the small mobile device serve. The border of telecommunication industry is also getting more and fuzzier. The 3G development is not into the expectation, the reason lacks the innovation application. But the software service has brings a revolution to the mobile telecommunication industry. This research is for the purpose of discussing how mobile service enterprise plans the suitable transport business pattern based on the user attitude. Base on the mobile portal, discusses the consumer to choose mobile service which factors to come under these factor influence and compared with two different case consumer's value localization.. The research result indicated that mobile service is restricted in mobile device the hardware characteristic and technology, but how to utilize innovates technology to promote attracts consumer's service, can be carries out mobile service the main consideration. By the software develops platform, not only the third party software developers cut the product price, also, because the platform has discussion's space, enables the consumer to be possible to talk directly with the developers and improve the software use greatly then easy.

Factors that influence prepaid churn subscribers when choosing a mobile-service provider

Mankum, Ethesen 15 July 2012 (has links)
High prepaid subscriber churn impacts on the service provider's profitability, financial evaluation and resource utilisation. Simultaneously it deprives subscribers of improved service because service providers are committing resources to subscriber acquisition and the management of subscriber retention instead of committing these resources to improving the value propositions offered to subscribers. A prepaid churn rate of just less than 50% in South Africa (2009) highlights the need for research into the factors that influence churned prepaid subscribers' choice of mobile-service provider. This in turn will increase the knowledge of retention and acquisition of prepaid subscribers. Using a telephonic survey on a sample of 861 prepaid subscribers, quantitative research was conducted to determine those factors that churned prepaid subscribers consider important when choosing a mobile-service provider. By making use of Analysis of Variance 4 out of 11 factors that, prepaid subscribers considered very important were identified when choosing a mobile-service provider. These included, in order of importance, Customer service quality, Mobile tariffs, Prepaid airtime and Starter-pack availability and Promotions. Discriminant Analysis highlighted 9 factors to be used to predict and classify groups of subscribers based on average monthly spend. The discriminate equation coefficients highlighted how these two groups of subscribers view the 9 factors when choosing a mobile-service provider. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / unrestricted

Co-Construction of Hybrid Spaces

Rudström, Åsa January 2005 (has links)
When computational systems become increasingly mobile and ubiquitous, digital information and the use of computational systems may increasingly be immersed into the physical and social world of objects, people and practices. However, the digital, physical and social materials that make up these hybrid spaces have different characteristics and are hard to understand for users. In addition, users are themselves part in constructing and re-constructing the hybrid spaces. The main question addressed in this thesis is whether making aspects of the digitally mediated hybrid spaces observable and accessible provides support to users. The observability may provide support for the specific task at hand or help in building an understanding for what the system does and how, an understanding that is needed to explain system output and to cope with service breakdowns. The fundament of the approach is to empower users of computational systems to actively make sense of the system themselves. Two prototype services are described, Socifer and MobiTip. Their common denominator was to make digitally mediated parts of the hybrid spaces observable to users. Without disqualifying other kinds of information, the work focussed on digitally mediated social trails of other users. Building on experience from the prototype work and an investigation into in seamful design, observability and awareness, I have investigated the effects of making a computational system’s social context observable to users in a way that - is separated from the service’s main functionality in the interface, allowing it to become peripheral and non-obtrusive; - uses simple models and little interpretation; - to some extent opens up the service to allow for user appropriation of both service content and functionality; and - is informative rather than proactive in order to empower the user rather than acting on the user’s behalf. By designing systems that fulfil these criteria I claim that the user will be supported in performing the task at hand, with or without the service, and that with service use, the user will become more and more aware of the possibilities and limitations of the underlying technology. In addition, the digitally mediated hybrid spaces where physical, social and digital contexts meet constitute application domains in themselves, domains that users may enjoy exploring. / Mobile Life

The use of mobile technologies for mobile service delivery at Makerere University Library : a pilot study

Ilako, Caroline January 2013 (has links)
Current trends in libraries require that students are able to access information and services beyond library buildings. Makerere University Library (Maklib) faces a number of challenges with regard to online and remote access to library resources and services. One possible solution to this problem lies in the use of mobile technologies. This study attempted to investigate how mobile technologies can be used to provide mobile-based library services at Makerere University library. A pilot study was conducted involving 31 postgraduate and 37 undergraduate students using questionnaires as the data collection tool. Qualitative data was collected and analyzed using Google Drive and was presented in form of text and graphs. Findings indicate that majority of Makerere University students own mobile phones that are internet enabled and those who do not own them have expressed interest in acquiring them in order to stay abreast with new technology. Although students owned internet enabled phones, they mainly used these devices to make and receive calls, and access different kinds of information ranging from news, social media to academic information. The services that students wanted to access using their mobile devices were: search the catalogue, request an e-book, request an item, chat with a librarian, view library news, access subject guides, search the library database, view library opening hours, View library contact information, Quick response, renew library items, book study group rooms, text messaging, book computer labs and view library map. There are also various resources that students expressed interest in and these include: Google searches, Google scholar, e-books, reference materials and e-journals. Convenience, flexibility, time saving, affordability are some of the reasons for acceptability of Mobile library services and resources. The majority of the respondents were positive about the implementation of the mobile services at Maklib however, some of the challenges mentioned by students include high cost of the devices and the ability to access internet services while in office. The study concludes that:  Mobile technology awareness is rapidly increasing among Ugandans especially students in higher education such as those at Makerere University.  Ownership of mobile devices is widespread among both the postgraduate and undergraduate students.  Both postgraduate and undergraduate students expressed their interest in accessing mobile library services and resources. Recommendations that ought to be adopted by Maklib and any other academic library willing to implement mobile library services are discussed. / Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Information Science / Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Unrestricted
