No. of bitstreams: 1 AnaKAS_DISSERT.pdf: 2143361 bytes, checksum: 1112be0ef8c651c4a88c8115ff69d508 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-05-17 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico / Fucans is a name used for sulfated polysaccharides, which is most characteristic structure of the presence of sulfated L-fucose, are found in brown seaweed (Phaeophyceae) and echinoderms (sea urchins and sea cucumbers). These polysaccharides have been reported to possess anticoagulant, antitumor, anti-viral, anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory activities. Therefore, in the present study was evaluate the effect of the fucan from the brown seaweed Spatoglossum schroederii in models of peritonitis and non-septic shock induced by zymosan, as well as in a murine model of colitis induces by DSS. So, the mice treatment by intravenous route with the fucan was able to reduce the exudate formation and the cell migration in the model of acute peritonitis induced by zymosan during the kinetic of 6, 24 and 48 hours. Similarly, in the model of non-septic shock induced by zymosan the fucan demonstrated a protector effect to inhibited the cellular migration to the peritoneo, to decrease the levels of IL-6 in the serum and in the peritoneal exudate, to attenuate the lose of weight in the mice; beside to reduce the serum levels of hepatic transaminases and as well as the liver injury. In the model of murine colitis, the treatment with the fucan reduced the lose of weight of the animals, decreased the levels of IL-17 and IFN- produced in the gut and decrease the intestinal lesion induced by DSS. In conclusion, the fucan used in this study presented a significant protector effect in the murine models of inflammation / Fucana ? uma denomina??o utilizada para polissacar?deos sulfatados, que tem como caracter?stica estrutural mais marcante a presen?a de L-fucose sulfatada, sendo encontrados em algas pardas (Phaeophyceae) e em equinodermos (ouri?os e pepinos do mar).

Gaming in art: A case study of two examples of the artistic appropriation of computer games and the mapping of historical trajectories of "Art Games" versus mainstream computer games

Stalker, Phillipa Jane 15 November 2006 (has links)
Student Number : 9903601A - MAFA research report - School of Arts - Faculty of Humanities / This essay will explore the existing definitions of art games that are currently being used in the art game/art mod genre. It will identify the leading theorists within the field, and take into account their definitions whilst at the same time establishing a set of categories within which can be defined the dominant trends in the development of the field. It will also situate art games within an historical context, both within the commercial computer game field as well as the digital art field and attempt to establish some sort of timeline within which we can see the development and emergence of art games in relation to these two disciplines. Two examples of art games, both from different categories will be examined and critiqued in the context of Artistic Computer Game Modification – A 3D game called Escape From Woomera and an art mod or patch called SOD. The art game as an entity will be examined in relation to ideas of the ‘interactive’ and ‘play’, and the implications and potential for fine art practice will be investigated.

Malicious Game Client Detection Using Feature Extraction and Machine Learning

Austad, Spencer J. 20 November 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Minecraft, the world's best-selling video game, boasts a vast and vibrant community of users who actively develop third-party software for the game. However, it has also garnered notoriety as one of the most malware-infested gaming environments. This poses a unique challenge because Minecraft software has many community-specific nuances that make traditional malware analysis less effective. These differences include unique file types, differing code formats, and lack of standardization in user-generated content analysis. This research looks at Minecraft clients in the two most common formats: Portable Executable and Java Archive file formats. Feature correlation matrices showed that malware features are too complicated to analyze without advanced algorithms. The latest machine learning methods for malware analysis were employed to classify samples based on both behavioral features generated from running samples in a sandbox environment and static features through file-based analysis. A total sample set of 92 files was used and found that Portable Executable and Java Archive files have significantly different feature sets that are important for malware identification. This study was able to successfully classify 77.8% of all Portable Executable samples 84.2% of all Java Archive samples while maintaining high recall scores. This research, by shedding light on the intricacies of malware detection in Minecraft clients, provides a framework for a more nuanced and adaptable approach to game-related malware research.

ENTRE OS BRECHÓS E A INTERNET: CIDADANIAS FLUIDAS E IDENTIDADES MEDIADAS POR PRÁTICAS CULTURAIS PRESENCIAIS E VIRTUAIS DOS MODS DE CURITIBA – PARANÁ

Pereira, Daniele Prates 05 December 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2017-07-21T14:42:53Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Daniele Prates.pdf: 16226221 bytes, checksum: f5093e90367e1f7c6cd9ba3d9a959de7 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-12-05 / The present research studies the cultural group of Mods from Curitiba, its name comes from England and means Modernism/Modism. We bring to discussion some cultural practices related to the identification processes of the Mods in Brazil, with a specific scene in Paraná state, visually and organized mainly in Curitiba. Our therical and methodolgical references was based on debates about post-modernity and the specificities of dynamic fluid and intercultural identities in the contemporary world, giving emphasis to the importance of cultural practices and apropriations as ways of expression, socialization and positions related to senses of belonging to groups. Senses and meanings that involve the constructions of speeches about the group itself and the way to see the daily reality and the relations with other cultural groups dialogues with the tension in virtual and presencial spaces of comunitary coexistance. Ideas of identitie, comunity, subjetivity, daily estetization, become keys to understand how these individuals develop their links with ideas and practices of cultural citizenship that happen related to consumption actions. In this research, the consumption acts are defined as a main aspect of the individuals’ actions to Express their identity and Mark their difference to the others. Our analysis shows dilemas, contradictions and ambiguities during the identification processes and cultural practices of the Mods from Curitiba. Mainly when they act in the virtual and presencial scenes, where the mediation of Technologies and products transform and pluralize the sense of belonging. Fluid cultural citizenship are created in these processes, due to contemporary practices that at the same time firm fixed identities and comunities and negotiate the fluidity, plasticity and fragility that are permanent in ways of expression and human relations in the game. So far, the Curitiba Mods, expressing themselves and getting along with other groups transform the meanings of those actions, mainly the consumption and cultural sociability ones, redefining – in a permanent way and even contradictory way – their practices and the border between individuals and groups.

Cellular Mechanisms of the Systemic Inflammatory Response Following Resuscitated Hemorrhagic Shock: The Role of Reactive Oxygen Species and Toll-like Receptor 4

Powers, Kinga Antonina 01 August 2008 (has links)
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) following hemorrhagic shock/resuscitation (S/R) is an important contributor to late morbidity and mortality in trauma patients. S/R promotes ARDS by inducing oxidative stress that primes cells of the innate immune system for excessive responsiveness to small inflammatory stimuli, termed the “twohit” hypothesis. Activated alveolar macrophages (AM) play a central role and when recovered from S/R animals exhibit an exaggerated responsiveness to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) with increased activation of the proinflammatory transcription factor NF-κB, and augmented expression of cytokines. LPS triggers AM signalling through Toll like receptor 4 (TLR4), which resides in plasma membrane lipid rafts. The objective of this work is to define cellular mechanisms of macrophage priming by oxidative stress following shock resuscitation. The main hypothesis investigated is that altered cellular distribution of TLR4 can lead to macrophage priming and antioxidant resuscitation strategies can diminish these effects. AM of rodents, exposed in vivo to oxidant stress following S/R, increase their surface levels of TLR4, which in turn results in augmented NF-κB translocation in response to small doses of LPS. Furthermore, in vitro H2O2 treatment of RAW 264.7 macrophages results in similar TLR4 surface translocation. Depletion of intracellular calcium, disruption of the cytoskeleton or inhibition of the Src kinases prevents the H2O2-induced TLR4 translocation, suggesting the involvement of receptor exocytosis. Further, fluorescent resonance energy iii transfer between TLR4 and lipid rafts as well as biochemical raft analysis demonstrated that oxidative stress redistributes TLR4 to surface lipid rafts. Preventing the oxidant-induced movement of TLR4 to lipid rafts using methyl-ß-cyclodextrin precluded the increased responsiveness of cells to LPS after H2O2 treatment. Further, AM priming by oxidative stress can be diminished by early exposure to resuscitation regimens with direct or indirect systemic antioxidant effects, such as 25% albumin, N-acetylcysteine and hypertonic saline. Hyperosmolarity was found to modulate AM TLR4 gene and protein expression. Collectively, these studies suggest a novel mechanism whereby oxidative stress might prime the responsiveness of cells of the innate immune system. Targeting the TLR4 signalling pathway early during shock resuscitation may represent an anti-inflammatory strategy able to ameliorate late morbidity and mortality following S/R.

O'Saben, Margaret 02 May 2008 (has links)
Located in Richmond, Virginia, MO Design is a small design/build company founded by Molly O’Saben. Ms. O’Saben received her bachelor’s degree in Craft & Material Studies and her master’s in Interior Environments from Virginia Commonwealth University. MO Design was founded in 2010 with a team of fellow alumni from VCU. We make objects that inspire inventiveness. Our reconfigurable components offer our clients the unique ability to adapt their environments to life’s ever-changing needs. We make MODs: Make your Own Designs. Our products are for people who appreciate efficient spaces, are open to exploring possibilities, and like to play. Just as Legos have uniform connections providing a myriad of options for building, our MODs offer the same versatility in a serious adult form. Use our building blocks to make a table, chair, or custom wall unit. When your needs change, dismantle your chair and rebuild it into a bookcase. We make objects that challenge the client to investigate. With exploration of their needs and implementation of their design comes a sense of accomplishment. We want to create this feeling of pride through working hard at play. MODs serve the needs of young and old, differing personalities, multiple demographics and help keep the world green with each reconfiguration. OUR MISSION: to bring the pride of making back to the individual. We design, build, and distribute our products. Our company designs components that offer versatility to our customers. MODs are block-like pieces that joint together using tradition mortise and tenon construction. The components we make can be reconfigured like puzzles, providing hours of entertainment for all ages. For our more conservative customers we make MOD PODs: a collection of MODs packaged and sold with assembly instructions to make a specific piece. MO Design also offers MOD Design Services. We can build a custom office, living room, or children’s bedroom with our products based on your unique specifications. We design to produce options, reduce waste, and create fun in the process. Our clients purchase products based on quality, versatility, and sustainability. Our products challenge how we see furniture – from monolithic, singular objects to dynamic tools for living. Small spaces need flexibility and the proper pieces are essential to an organized environment. Our products offer the: • opportunity for individuals to create custom designs. • ability to customize products without needing expensive, dangerous tools. • potential for growth with new designs that continue to connect to original parts. • enhancement of human needs, both physical and emotional. • excitement of exploration, collaboration, and play. • versatility to compliment any lifestyle, from highlighted piece to a closet storage system. • manageability of a product that can be moved and manipulated by a single person.• a challenge to our current product cycles: buy, use, and discard. So, lets play with MODs!
