Reading cycles : the culture of BMX freestyleNelson, Wade Gordon James. January 2006 (has links)
This dissertation draws from and contributes to many traditions within the (interdisciplinary) discipline of communication studies. Serving the two primary objectives of the examination of the figure of the BMX freestyle cycling Pro and the analysis of the role of the magazines within this particular culture or field in the construction and maintenance of this figure, this project brings together studies of cultural intermediaries, magazine history, advertising history and theory, subcultures, audiences, commodification, cultural industries, celebrity, stars and professional athletes. The culture of BMX freestyle cycling is an interesting and heretofore unexamined phenomenon, and a focused examination allows the exploration and investigation of larger questions within the discipline. As such, this dissertation provides an informed interpretation of the culture of BMX freestyle, allows the examination of a number of other issues concerning the mediation of cultural practices, and suggests a theory of the special-interest magazine, thus contributing substantively to various literatures. / Special-interest magazines are a part of a larger system and industries within which the ultimate goal is the sale of commodities. At the same time, they function as a site of credibility within a larger field, both conferring star status on particular individuals and approving particular commodities that are being offered to the readers. Special-interest magazines construct and sell audiences to advertisers, create star systems, propose candidates for stardom, help build image careers, contribute substantially to a "star currency" within the particular field, negotiate (i.e.; mediate) tensions between the advertisers, the stars, and the readers, help organize the time of a culture and work to infuse it with a sense of vitality through the punctual and ritualistic appearance of novel content, assist the consumer with their desires for commodities and stars by standing as catalogues of commodities (serving to educate newcomers in the protocol of the culture), provide new financial opportunities (such as the commodity form of the photo contingency), and in their complicity with the needs of those that provide their primary source of revenue, give more value to the advertising dollar in the construction of editorial content that could be seen as advertising.

Skandinavisk motocross : En jämförelse kring synen på barn- och ungdomsutveckling / Scandinavian motocross : A comparison of the view on child and youth developmentGustafsson, Malte January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of the study is to investigate how the Scandinavian countries and its special sports federations view child- and youth development in motocross, as well as how this can be understood. This has been carried out using a content analysis and the documents published by the federations on their website. The study shows that the federations uses different concepts to develop talented drivers. Similarities and differences are presented in each country's view of sport and that the construction of sport in each country has an impact on the child- and youth development. It is also presented that the efforts of the federations are relatively similar to the line on how the country wants sport to be conducted.

Motorsport and Sustainability : Case Study of MXStar Team’s Environmental Impact OptimizationKravchenko, Maria, Nosov, Igor January 2011 (has links)
Given paper discusses motocross as a part of motorsport from the viewpoint of sustainabilityand considers continuously growing impact of human activity on the environment. The theoretical framework of this paper is based on the concepts which position motorsport ina context of sustainability at both global and team levels within the borders of systems theory.Training and racing activities of the MXStar team based in Uppsala (Sweden) are described inthe paper from the environmental perspective. Changing of the team’s technical performanceas well as their behavioural models has certain driving and restraining forces that are analyzedin particular in the discussion part of the paper. Recommendations for the MXStar team havebeen developed in accordance with the results of detailed analysis of the team’senvironmental impact. The authors concluded that environmental performance of motocross racing composes fromtechnical and behavioural inputs of each participating team. In order to optimize theenvironmental impact of the motocross each team member has to be innovative in bothperspectives.

Re-imagining motocross safety through autobiographical design / Nytänkande av säkerhet för motocross genom självbiografisk designLarsson, Victor January 2017 (has links)
This study explores the design space of motocross within Human-Computer Interaction with focus on warning riders of danger while practicing unsupervised. Using autobiographical design, the aim was to investigate mechanisms and modalities suitable for motocross where the environment, tracks, physical and mental load on the riders were some of the challenges faced. With basis in research within other sports and a domain expert focus group, a prototype was developed and iterated over a period of three months using the author and recruited participants as riders. The process was documented using a diary. The study concluded that using the helmet as mounting point was effective due to not being intrusive for the riders and no track alterations were needed to implement the system for real use. Visual feedback using light mounted under the visor showed to be unreliable due to sun interference, while sound created by vibrations on the top of the helmet shown to be suitable for warning motocross riders. Using visual and auditory modalities together, the light was concluded to be efficient as an information display when attention was brought to the rider by the vibration sound.

Arseneau, Thierry 13 December 2023 (has links)
Background In 2016, emergency physicians notified a regional public health bureau in Quebec, Canada, about a motocross competition where 5 children were hurt. The Quebec National Institute of public health (INSPQ) was mandated to study the injuries risks related to motocross practice in Quebec and compare it to other sports. This master's thesis is a part of that mandate. Objectives Quantify and compare incidence rates of injuries in motocross and alpine skiing competitions in Quebec according to age (<16 y/o., ≥16 y/o) between 2015 and 2019. Methods Injured cases were measured by ambulance evacuation reports in competitions. Exposures were measured with the competitions results sheets, by measuring the number of departures and the time spent in competitions. Incidence rates of ambulance-evacuated injured participants were calculated, by the number of departures and the time spent in competitions, and compared using incidence rate ratios. Results When measuring the incidence rate ratio with the exposure by the number of departures, the risk of being injured and evacuated by ambulance is higher in motocross competitions than alpine skiing competitions in both <16 y/o and ≥16 y/o groups (incidence rate ratios: <16 y/o = 18.01 [IC95%: 6.87-47.19]), ≥16 y/o = 5.67 [IC95%:2.60-12.37]. When measuring the incidence rate ratio with the exposure by the time spent in competitions, there is no statistically significant difference between motocross and alpine skiing competitions. Discussion Ambulance evacuation incidence rates are statistically higher in motocross competitions than alpine skiing competitions when measuring the exposures by the number of departures, but not statistically different when measuring the exposure by the time spent in competitions. The longer duration of the motocross rounds compared to the alpine skiing rounds is inherent to the discipline and this longer round duration increase the risk of injuries.

Title: Nutritional aspects and body composition in motocross Objectives: The goal of this work is monitoring nutritional habits and parameters for the assessment of body composition and somatotype for Czech junior national team in motocross and enduro. Methotds: There was used four day record of consumed food to map out nutritional habits, which was evaluted by software Nutirs. The input data of body composition were obtained by Bioimpendance InBody 230. Following were also measured selected anthropometric parameters. Results: The results of our study indicate quantitative variations in motocross riders nutrition, especially the negative energy balance and the low proportion of carbohydrates in the diet in pre-season and in the day of the race. These can be some way influenced by individual variability. The research somatotype and body composition suggests that in relation to physical abilities are motocross riders and riders Enduro the most versatile talent for sport. Keywords: Motocross, nutrition, supplements, body composition, somatotype, bioelectrical impedance
