Acute Pulmonary Response in Landscape Workers: Job Redesign

Substantial efforts have been made in the study of occupational induced airway diseases. A strong link has been found between worker exposure to organic dust and resulting acute pulmonary spasms. The supporting studies behind this link are primarily in the industries of cotton, animal and swine farming; however, some studies have been related to landscaping type tasks (i.e. mowing, leaf blowing). The relationship between organic dust and pulmonary response is associated with respiratory irritants that are found in materials such as soil, grain, and compost, especially when these materials have become moist. Some of the culprits that have been identified as causative agents of respiratory spasms are endotoxin, fungal spores, and fungal mycotoxin. This study focused on the respiratory hazards in the landscaping industry. During the month of March, landscapers worked heavily with wood mulch, which contains many organic materials that potentially harbor the aforementioned irritants. This study measured the exposure levels of endotoxin and fungal spores in the landscaper workers' breathable space. While also measuring the pulmonary function of participants and evaluating disposable respirators as an intervention. Low levels of endotoxin and fungal spores were found in the breathable space of the participants during the two days of data collection. The users were not completely satisfied with the half face disposable respirator provided, and offered detailed feedback concerning the design and use of the respirator intervention. / Master of Science

Mulches in smallholder maize systems in the Limpopo Province of South Africa: untangling the effects of N through experimentation and simulation.

In Limpopo Province of South Africa, poor soil fertility and low crop yields are serious problems facing resource poor smallholder farmers. A survey of over 60 farmers in 2 villages (Gabaza and GaKgoroshi) found that most of the smallholder farmers were women (68%), elderly (50% above 68 years of age) and had not attended school or only attended up to the primary level (80%). Very few farmers kept livestock (usually in small numbers) and most grew cereal and legume crops (on 1ha of land) for home consumption and livestock feed, with legumes being planted on 13% of the land. The study showed that 80% of farmers were not fully aware of the benefits of legumes in fixing nitrogen (N) and improving yield. A field study at the survey village of Gabaza found that the application of fertiliser N and grass mulch combination and fertiliser N plus guarbean mulch significantly increased plant height and maize shoot growth at 4 and 8 weeks after planting. However, when grass mulch was without N fertiliser, there was no increase in maize growth relative to the control (0N). A farming systems simulation model (Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator - APSIM) was used to simulate this field study as well as over the long-term (1971 to 2008). Simulation analysis showed poor average maize yield (<3000 kg ha⁻ ¹) with the application of grass residues even when used with 30 kg N fertiliser. However, the application of guarbean residues as mulch with or without N fertiliser and as green manure increased maize yields to >4000 kg ha⁻ ¹. Simulation showed that the grass mulch with or without the addition of N fertiliser reduced water stress and soil water evaporation but increased N stress during the reproductive phase of the crop in most seasons. When guarbean mulch was used as green manure by itself, or mulch plus N fertiliser, N stress was reduced but water stress and soil water evaporation were increased which could have been due to faster decomposition of legume mulch as compared to grass mulch. Addition of N fertiliser reduced N stress to maize but increased water stress and soil water evaporation similar to the guarbean mulch because of high soil evaporation. APSIM analysis clearly showed the importance of N x soil water interactions in determining maize growth and yield at Gabaza. Therefore, two studies were undertaken in the laboratory in Australia to determine the dynamics of carbon (C) and N where residues of different qualities [canola (C:N 43), wheat (26), pea (9) and mucuna (14)] were applied to clay loam (Tarlee) or sandy (Waikerie) soils. In experiment 1, where residues were incorporated into the two soils, the cumulative CO₂-C evolution for the wheat and canola treatments at the end of the incubation period were fairly similar but significantly higher than for pea, mucuna and the control. In general, the application of residues increased microbial biomass C more than the control, with highest increases up to 1.48 and 1.56 mg C g⁻ ¹ soil for canola and wheat in Tarlee soil, respectively and 0.82 mg C g⁻ ¹ soil for pea in Waikerie soil. Even though the Tarlee soil showed greater C release than Waikerie soil, the C turnover from the residues between the 2 soils was not significantly different except for pea residues. Canola and wheat residues were found to immobilise N whereas N content increased in both soils with the application of legumes (pea and mucuna). In experiment 2, mucuna, pea and wheat residues were either incorporated or applied as surface mulches on Waikerie soil. Initially the CO₂-C release was higher for incorporated than mulched residues and CO₂-C released was higher for pea residues. However, at the end of the incubation more CO₂-C was released with the application of wheat residue indicating differences between residue types in the pattern of soil respiration. Microbial biomass C was higher for incorporated than mulched residue treatments; pea residue showed the highest biomass C for incorporated (0.78 mg C g⁻ ¹ soil) whereas mucuna had the highest microbial biomass (0.11 mg C g⁻ ¹ soil) treatments. The method of residue application resulted in a significant difference in C turnover between residues, with pea residue showing significant increase in C utilisation than mucuna and wheat. The pea residues, which had the lowest C:N, increased soil mineral N more than other treatments in both incorporated and mulched treatments. Lower mineralisation of N observed in residues of high C:N ratio compared to the control could be due to immobilisation of N. Therefore, understanding the nutrient dynamics of different crop residues could play an important role in the management of residues in different soil types. Based on these results it can be concluded that legume residues have the potential to improve soil fertility and crop yields in dryland farmers’ fields in Limpopo. Im Rahmen der Neugestaltung des Innenhofes an der Fachschule für Gartenbau in Dresden-Pillnitz wurde eine Freianlage mit unterschiedlichen Bepflanzungstypen hergestellt und drei Jahre gesichtet. Der Pflegeaufwand ging in diesen drei Jahren deutlich zurück. Ein Großteil der Bepflanzungen ist für anspruchsvollere, halböffentliche und öffentliche Außenanlagen attraktiv.

Combining Cover Crops, Strip Tillage, and Novel Mulches to Manage Weeds in Vegetable Cropping Systems

Vegetable producers may benefit from integrating living mulches into their operations to manage weeds and improve soil quality. Living mulches, however, can reduce vegetable yield through competition. Here we investigate strip tilling into living mulches and then direct seeding a vegetable crop in the strip till zone as a production practice to limit competition. We further investigate the use of two surface-applied mulches, a newsprint hydromulch and a compost blanket, for weed control within the strip till zone. In field conditions, living mulches reduced vegetable yield by 49-84% and the use of the newsprint hydromulch and compost blanket reduced weed biomass by 84% and 85% respectively. In greenhouse conditions, a 50% reduction in the hydromulch application rate used in the field experiment achieved similar weed control, suggesting an application rate of 6.4 L m-2 or a mulch strength of 0.6 MPa may be sufficient for weed control with a hydromulch.

Wirkung einer Folie auf den Wärmehaushalt eines Pflanzenbestandes mit und ohne gleichzeitiger Frostschutzberegnung

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein Simulationsmodell zur Bestimmung der Beregnungsmenge vorgestellt, um das Absinken der Temperatur unter 0°C eines mit einer Plastikfolie abgedeckten Bodens möglichst zu verhindern. Es wurden numerische Berechnungen für den nackten Boden und für den mit Folie abgedeckten Boden mit und ohne gleichzeitiger Frostschutzberegnung durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen z.B., daß die Bodenoberflächentemperatur bei einer Beregnung von nur 75% der Sollvorgabe relativ stark absinkt. Dieses liegt an der relativ großen Gefrierwärme von Wasser. Ein nur mit Folie abgedeckter Boden schützt nur in den wenigsten Fällen vor Bodenfrost. Die Simulationsergebnisse stimmen gut mit den gemessenen überein. / A model to determine the minimum amount of water required to hold the soil temperature above 0°C under a plastic mulch is presented. Numerical experiments with and without consideration of the mulch foil, with and without sprinkling of the mulch foil were performed. The results substantiate that sprinkling par example at 75% of the usual used rate of water is sufficient to avoid that the soil temperature falls below 0°C because of the relative big freezing energy of water and that mulching alone cannot prevent the soil temperature from decreasing below that value. The model results are in good agreement with observations.

THE EFFECTS OF GROUND-FLOOR MANAGEMENT ON BLUEBERRY MAGGOT (RHAGOLETIS MENDAX CURRAN) AND PREDATORY BEETLES IN HIGHBUSH BLUEBERRIES

There is very low tolerance for blueberry maggot (Rhagoletis mendax Curran) in blueberries making it a serious pest in eastern North America. Control is focused on eliminating flies with insecticides before oviposition in fruit. Organic mulches may improve highbush blueberry production, but their effects on this pest are largely unknown. The research in this thesis evaluated compost and pine needle mulches on blueberry maggot (mature maggots, pupae, emerging flies) and predatory beetles that may consume these stages. Mulches affected fly emergence and maggot pupation. Fly emergence was reduced by 80-100% and delayed ~8 days from pupae covered with 20 cm of pine needles compared to 1 cm of soil. Emergence from 20 cm of compost was lower in wet conditions, and 5 cm of mulch did not limit emergence in the field. Pupation at increased depth reduced emergence because flies did not eclose or, if eclosed, were unable to crawl to the surface. The delay was likely due to lower temperatures at depth. No flies emerged from 1 cm in pine needles in the field probably due to high temperatures. In the laboratory, maggots pupated more deeply in pine needles than other substrates, but ~30% did not pupate in dry pine needles. Saturated soil caused ~50% of maggots to pupate on the surface. Mulching altered beetle diversity and activity/density and affected beetle predation on maggots and pupae. Compost plots in a highbush blueberry field attracted predatory carabids and staphylinids, although some staphylinids were frequent in pine needles and phytophagous carabids preferred unweeded compost plots. Attraction to compost, particularly for Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger), was due primarily to higher prey densities - earthworms and millipedes - than other treatments. This beetle consumed some maggots or pupae in soil or compost, but predation rates decreased when alternative prey was abundant. Blueberry bushes in weedy compost plots attracted many flies, but infestation rates were higher in composted bushes only in the year mulch was applied. Overall, thick mulching with pine needles contributes most significantly to blueberry maggot management. Future research should explore integration of mulch with other tactics for R. mendax control.
