Utility of Positive Peer Reporting to Improve Interactions Among Children in Foster Care

This study investigated the utility of positive peer reporting to improve placement outcomes in foster care settings. Rejected children are likely to exhibit disruptive behavior problems due to frequent negative interactions with their peers, augmenting an already unstable environment in foster care. Researchers have found positive peer reporting to be successful in increasing social status and positive interactions and reducing negative interactions. Utilizing a multiple baseline with reversal elements, this study examined the effects of positive peer reporting on the positive and negative interactions of socially rejected children in foster care settings. Results supported previous literature with the first participant's positive interactions increasing from a mean of 16.67% in baseline to 55.63% during treatment; this was the final phase after a placement change. The second participant's positive interactions increased from a baseline average of 8.6% to a mean of 52.67% after positive peer reporting was implemented. Percentages reversed to near-baseline levels when treatment conditions were removed, averaging 21.5%. Fading procedures returned positive interactions to 41.39%, and these levels maintained across the final baseline, averaging 40%.

Attachment, illness perceptions, and health outcomes: the mediating role of support seeking, supportive, and negative interactions in couples experiencing type 2 diabetes.

This thesis used attachment theory and the common sense model of illness as theoretical backgrounds to examine the mechanisms that contribute to the quality of the support seeking behaviour and social interactions between patients with type 2 diabetes and their partners. Specifically, this thesis examined actor and spouse effects of working models of attachment on health outcomes, and illness perceptions on health outcomes for both patients and partners. Furthermore, it determined if support seeking, supportive interactions, and negative interactions mediated between the attachment and health outcomes and illness perception and health outcomes. At study entry, 70 patients with type 2 diabetes and their partners completed measures on attachment, illness perceptions, support seeking, receipt of supportive interactions and of negative interactions, satisfaction with support received, and health outcomes. Health outcomes included psychological distress and physical health for patients and partners, and diabetes well-being for patients only. Six months later, participants again completed measures on supportive and negative interactions, satisfaction with support received, and health outcomes. The data were examined both cross-sectionally (including mediational analyses) and longitudinally. The cross-sectional analyses revealed a number of actor and spouse effects in the relationships between attachment and health outcomes, and illness perceptions and health outcomes. Patients who scored higher on attachment-anxiety experienced higher levels of psychological distress and lower levels of diabetes well-being. Also, the partners of these patients experienced higher levels of psychological well-being. Furthermore, covert support seeking behaviour and negative interactions were found to be significant mediators between patient attachment-anxiety and patient psychological distress and diabetes well-being. In addition, support satisfaction mediated the relationship between patient attachment-anxiety and patient psychological distress. Illness perceptions, specifically timeline cyclical perceptions, were also shown to be related to health outcomes, and receipt of negative interactions. Patients and partners who scored higher on timeline cyclical experienced higher levels of psychological distress. Also receipt of negative interactions mediated the relationship between timeline cyclical and psychological distress. Some significant changes over time found when the data were examined longitudinally. For example, patients who scored higher on attachment-anxiety at study entry experienced higher levels of psychological distress over time, and had a partner who also experienced higher levels of psychological distress over time. In addition, partners who scored higher on personal control and who had a spouse (patient) who scored higher on timeline cyclical at study entry experienced higher levels of psychological distress overt time. Taken together, both the cross-sectional and longitudinal findings emphasize the contribution of the partner and his or her interactions with the patient to patient well-being. In the same manner, the results also highlight the effect of the patient’s illness on the partner’s well-being. These findings have important practical implications, especially for practitioners who aim to design intervention to help patients and their partners better adapt to the patient’s illness.

Facilitation and competition in coastal dunes: meta-analysis of determinants of plant interactions / Facilitação e competição em planícies costeiras: meta-análise de fatores determinantes de interações entre plantas

Plants established next to other plants may have their performance positively or negatively affected by their neighbors, which characterizes interactions of facilitation and competiton, respectively. Facilitation and competition, however, may occur simultaneously and understanding which one predominates in pairwise interactions under different ecological contexts is important to comprehend the structure of plant communities. According to the stress-gradient hypothesis (SGH), facilitation is expected to prevail in more severe environments, but the outcome of interactions may change depending on features of interacting individuals, such as life form and ontogenetic stages. As harsh conditions and high diversity of plant life-forms are characteristic of coastal dunes, the amount of studies about plant interactions has been rapidly increasing in these ecosystems, with apparent divergent conclusions. However, until now, there is not a systematic and quantitative synthesis about the factors affecting the net outcome of facilitation and competition in these ecosystems. We conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the effects of environmental stress and the simultaneous influence of plant life form and ontogenetic stage on the outcome of facilitation and competition in coastal dunes around the world. We used four performance measures to estimate the outcome of interactions: abundance, survival, growth, and reproduction. Contrary to what was expected by SGH, we found that negative impacts of neighbors on plant reproduction increase towards more arid conditions, but this effect was not observed for other performance measures. Our results also indicate that woody neighbors facilitate the survival of woody seedlings and the reproduction of herbs, while herbaceous neighbors facilitate the growth of other herbaceous plants. Overall, the outcome of plant interactions in coastal dunes depends on the performance variable measured and on both environmental conditions and plant features, indicating an interaction between these factors. Such interaction and different mechanisms underlying facilitation and competition should be more investigated in the future. The global scale of our meta-analysis supports generalization of important processes of succession and conservation in coastal dunes. Benefits of woody neighbors to the survival of woody seedlings corroborate the concept of successional feedbacks in the beach-inland physiognomic gradient, and our results reinforce the use of nurse plants in coastal dunes as a valuable tool to restoration of these endangered ecoystems / Plantas estabelecidas nas proximidades de outras plantas podem ter sua performance afetada positiva ou negativamente por seus vizinhos, caracterizando, respectivamente, interações de facilitação e competição.
