Interest Rate and Liquidity Risk Management for Lebanese Commercial Banks / Gestion des risques des taux d'intérêt et de liquidité dans le secteur bancaire libanais

Daccache, Rudy 26 June 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to provide Bank Audi with econometric tools for sake of a more robust risk management. Lebanese businesses today are faced with greater challenges than ever before, both economical and political, and there is a question about the future of the middle east region after the Syrian civil war. Thus, Lebanese commercial banks face greater complications in the management of interest rate and liquidity risk. The first part of this thesis discusses interest rate risk management and measurement in the Lebanese market. First, we seek to build the Lebanese term structure. This market is known by its illiquidity, yields for a given maturity make a large jump with a small impact on other yields even if close to this maturity. Therefore, we face challenges in calibrating existing yield curve models. For this matter, we get historical prices of bonds issued by the Lebanese government, and denominated in Local currency and in US dollar. A new estimation method has been added to Nelson Siegel and Svensson model, we call it “Correlation Constraint Approach”. Model parameters can be interpreted from economical perspective which will be helpful in forecasting yield curve movements based on economist’s opinion. On the second hand, traditional customer deposits are the main funding source of Lebanese commercial banks (80-85% of liabilities). Although they are contractually short term (mainly one month) paying fixed interest rates, these deposits are historically known to be a stable source of funding and therefore exhibit a sticky behavior to changes in market interest rates. We develop an error correction model showing a long-run equilibrium between Libor and Lebanese banking sector average rate offered on USD deposits. Results make it possible to determine the behavioral duration (repricing date) of customer deposits when market interest rates fluctuate. Therefore, the behavioral duration of liabilities will be higher than the contractual one which will lower the duration gap between assets and liabilities and thus the negative impact of positive interest rate shocks. After understanding interest risk profile of customers’ deposits, we start the second part by determining their behavioral liquidation maturity. We get Bank Audi’s historical deposits outstanding balances filtered into the following categories: currency, account typology and residency of depositor. We develop an error correction model for each filter. Results show relationship between deposits behaviors, the coincident indicator and spreads between offered rates in the Lebanese market. The model will lead to assess behavioral liquidation maturity to deposits and understand their liquidity risk profile. This will be helpful for the funding liquidity risk management at Bank Audi. Large financial institutions are supposed to hold large positions of given assets. The last topic is related to market liquidity risk management. We suppose an investor holds a large position of a given asset. Then at time 0, a severe shock causes a large depreciation of the asset value and makes the investor decides to liquidate the portfolio as soon as possible with limited losses. Stock returns are modeled by GARCH process which has tail behaviors after large variation at time 0. Trading on liquid and illiquid markets, we provide the trader with best exit trading strategy maximizing his utility function, finally we incorporate into the model an expert opinion which will help the investor in taking the decision

Relationships Between Training Load Metrics and Injury in Collegiate Women's Soccer

Lacina, Michael Allen 25 November 2020 (has links)
Injury risk reduction is an ever-evolving topic within an athletic environment. Consequences from an injury include participation time loss, financial, social, and personal costs. Coaching and medical staff strive to reduce the risk through various manners. Training load monitoring is one method that is utilized in injury risk reduction through global positioning systems (GPS) with statistical modeling. The purpose of this study was to investigate the external loads for training sessions and competition in starters versus non-starters; to determine if there were control chart violations associated with sustained injuries; and to determine whether in-season injuries were associate with one or more control chart violations. NCAA Division I female soccer players were recruited during the fall 2019 season. Participants were provided a STATSports GPS unit to wear during all practice and competition sessions to analyze the following variables: total distance, high metabolic load distance, sprints, accelerations, decelerations, and dynamic stress load (DSL). These variables were analyzed using statistical process control charts (SPC Charts) and Nelson Rules. Overall, there were 1,235 violations for the team, with the highest amount coming from DSL. Throughout the season, there were 16 time-loss injuries. Within the 3- and 7-day periods prior to injury, there were only two cases in which the injured athlete had more violations when compared to the team average. Therefore, SPC Charts were not a good indicator of injury risk prediction within this population. Future research includes reassessing these methods within a larger population and for a longer duration (i.e. several seasons). / Master of Science / Reducing the risk of injury in athletes is a focal point for many coaches, training, and medical staffs in collegiate athletics. The consequences of injury range from loss of playing time to financial and long-term health costs. Being able to reduce the risk of injuries not only has personal implications for the athlete but also relates to overall team success. Using global positioning systems (GPS) to track the amount of work done in training can possibly reduce injury risk. This study planned to investigate the workload in NCAA Division 1 collegiate female soccer athletes and if any injuries were sustained during both training and competition settings. The results suggest that statistical process control (SPC) charts and the Nelson Rules did not predict injury risk within this population. There is limited research that has used these tools. Future work can reassess these methods within larger collegiate athletic populations, over a longer period of time.

Clozapine usage in a public sector psychiatric hospital in the Nelson Mandela Metropole / Mari-San Moolman

Moolman, Mari-San January 2013 (has links)
About 30.00% of schizophrenic patients fail to respond to conventional antipsychotics. Clozapine shows superior efficacy, for both the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia, over conventional antipsychotics. The reputation of clozapine lies mainly with its repeated proven efficacy in the treatment of refractory schizophrenia. However, clozapine has quite a severe side effect profile. Patients receiving clozapine therapy may develop serious adverse effects such as agranulocytosis, neutropenia and metabolic syndrome. Therefore guidelines are required which recommend that regular haematological and metabolic monitoring be performed. These monitoring guidelines should assist medical practitioners in the early detection and reporting of serious adverse effects associated with clozapine therapy. South Africa lacks uniform provincial or national guidelines regulating practices in the treatment of mental disorders. International guidelines may be considered, which are not specifically adapted for the South African setting. These guidelines recommend both the haematological and metabolic monitoring of clozapine. At present there are no South African guidelines recommending the metabolic monitoring of clozapine. The general aim of the study was to determine the prescribing and monitoring patterns of clozapine at Elizabeth Donkin Hospital in the Nelson Mandela Metropole. Due to the absence of specific South African guidelines and the severe side effect profile of clozapine, some of the research objectives were to determine whether the initiation of clozapine, as well as the haematological and metabolic monitoring performed, was compliant with international clinical guidelines. In this pharmacoepidemiological study a retrospective drug utilisation review was performed. The study was observational in design and included quantitative data. Data were collected from the files of 65 patients (N=65) discharged on clozapine between 1 December 2010 and 29 February 2012. Follow-up investigations were performed at the clinics and long-term care centres both three months and six months after discharge. In 52.30% (n=34) of the cases clozapine was previously prescribed. Compliance with the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for the appropriate initiation of clozapine was 63.10% (n=41). Compliance with the Standard Treatment guidelines for the initiation of clozapine by a psychiatrist was 63.10% (n=41). Noncompliance with the recommended guidelines for haematological monitoring occurred in 77.40% of patients in the hospital setting (n=48) as well as in 95.70% of patients during the three-month follow-up at the clinics (n=44). Non-compliance with the guidelines for metabolic monitoring occurred in all the observed patients in the hospital setting (n=62) as well as in 45.70% of patients in the clinic setting (n=21). It was found that 71.00% (n=46) of patients were still on clozapine three months after discharge and 65.00% (n=42) were still on clozapine six months after discharge from hospital, resulting in discontinuation rates of 29.00% and 35.00% respectively. It was found that clozapine was inadequately monitored although in most cases the initiation of clozapine was compliant with the recommended guidelines. However, practitioners should be trained on the existing prescribing and monitoring guidelines to promote the rational use of clozapine in the public health sector of South Africa. / MPham (Pharmacy Practice), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Plant fossils are common in the Antarctic Peninsula and have been found not only in the eastern areas that correspond to the back arc deposition environments, but also in the Graham Land and the South Shetland archipelago, which represent the arc and fore arc contexts, respectively. In the Nelson Island, part of the South Shetland archipelago, the fóssil record is deeply linked to the volcanic processes that marks its geological history, initially affected by the Mesozoic subduccion events and after by the construction of an island arc. The macro and microflora found in a reworked pyroclastic deposit from the upper part of Rip Point outcrop, in northwestern Nelson Island, are herein presented for the first time. The macroflora is dominated by very fragmented leaves of Nothofagus and primitive forms of angiosperms, related to the families Lauraceae, Anacardiaceae and Melastomataceae. Rare pinnules of Pteridophyta and a sole and partial conifer shoot also compound this assemblage. Amongst the palynomorphs, the Pteridophyta are a main component, follow by pollen grains of gymnosperms. The presence of grains related to Nothofagus is represented by ancestral and modern types (e.g. Nothofagidites cf. endurus, N. cf. kaitangataensis and N. cf. brachyspinulosus). The Classopollis grains, in association with Nothofagidites cf. endurus, N. cf. kaitangataensis, suggested a Late Cretaceous age to this deposit. In relation to stratigraphic correlation, the composition of macroflora showed also a greatest identity with ones recorded in other exposures found in the King George Island, specially, with assemblages attributed to the middle Campanian (e.g. Half Three point, Price point and Zamek Hill). In terms of paleophytogeography, it was possible observe the domain of angiosperms related to a deciduous and primitive leaves of Nothofagus, similar to many of modern species that live in southern South America. In this way, it is suggested that the Antarctic Peninsula was under a humid temperate climatic condition during the deposition time of study interval, based on the domain of microfilic leaves and the presence of leaves and pollen grains related to Nothofagus. Finally, it should be highlighted that the pteridophytes (families Blechnaceae e Hymenophyllaceae), the cupressacea of genus Papuacedrus and the few morphotypes associated to Nothofagus described here, indicated the existence of a land connection between the Antarctic Peninsula and Australasia during the end of Cretaceous.

Cabral, Izaura da Silva January 2017 (has links)
This work proposes a discussion of the reading of children 's literature from the viewpoint of the Theory of Reception Aesthetics, especially the Aesthetic Effect Theory, based on the analysis of three works by the author Nelson Cruz, who bring characters from Brazilian History and fiction , illustrated from pictures of the plastic arts, photographs, historical texts: Chica e João, Dirceu e Marília and Bárbara e Alvarenga.

The hypothesis to be investigated is that marriage constitutes a profitable scenario for the emergency of tragedy, as we think of marriage as a possible site of tension between individual discourse and the confluence of other discourses that circulate in society, introducing patriarchal prejudice misogyny in particular which is incorporated by the individual as absolute truth. It would be thus reproduced in marriage the conflict that defines tragedy, that is, the tension between the individual and some power superior to it, which may be embodied in its own subjectivity if we consider modern tragedy

This paper addresses the issue of the New State (1937-1945), but utilizes the municipal perspective, ie, seeks to recognize projects of the regime from the perspective of the municipality of Sao Goncalo. For this study was chosen to manage Nelson Correa Monteiro as municipal intervenor for the period 1940 to 1945. We use administrative reports as documentation of Nelson Correa Monteiro, referring to five years of its operation and present reports and official publications in The Journal São Gonçalo, which in 1940 became the official organ of the City. As axes of reflection, we discuss three main themes, because they shared the central problems in speech and proposals of the New State Nelson Correa: Health, Education and Communication routes. This work becomes a source for future research that address the Estado Novo, the Estado system at the municipal level, and contributes to better understanding and appreciation of history and social construction, political and economic in São Gonçalo in the State of Rio de January.
