Rané literární dílo Josefa Čapka v kontextu moderního umění / Josef Čapek's Early Literary Work in the Context of Modern ArtKováčová, Eva January 2013 (has links)
Josef Čapek belonged among those Czech artists who dealt with problems of form and function of a modern art work in the beginning of 20th century. Both theoretical reflections on art and his early fiction represent Čapek's specific approach to the debate about modern and avant-garde currents in the times of stylistically inconsistent situation. This thesis analyses the confrontation of aesthetic principles of these art movements. Its focus is to show to what extent was Josef Čapek influenced by the principles of the individual movements and to describe the way in which he acquired and modified them. The goal is to outline Čapek's path from a survey of modern forms to his own independent viewpoint. Key words Josef Čapek, Modern Art, Manifest Česká moderna, Neoclassicism, Cubism, Expressionism

Previous issue date: 2016-12-19 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This paper aims to investigate through the poetry analysis the representations Nature has in Cláudio Manuel da Costa. The selected corpus concentrates on twenty-eight of the one hundred sonnets of the volume Obras. To do so a characterization of this time and period poetry is required as also of the time that the author lived in. Both the historical characterizations of the time as of the poetry are essential to understand what elements or representations were pertinent at the time. Considering it we can better perceive the elements to read Cláudio’s poetry. To better understand his style we consulted some literary history works such as Alfredo Bosi (2015), Afrânio Coutinho (2007), Antonio Candido (2014) and José Guilherme Merquior (2014). To describe the classical style some texts were consulted, such as Roland Barthes’ article: Existe uma escrita poética? Regarding the Brazillian History context Inconfidência Mineira’s books were used: Kenneth Maxwell (2010), Augusto de Lima Junior (1968) e João Pinto Furtado (2002). The material selected for analysis had two criteria. The first one consist in selecting those sonnets in which the nature is more prominent and the second one is the role nature has on the poem. The analysis concentrates in the nature and its role aiming the kind of representation it has: according to the bucolic genre, if the nature has a passive role or an active one, if it has human traces, etc / O presente trabalho objetiva investigar, por meio de leituras de poemas, as representações da Natureza em Cláudio Manuel da Costa.

Opera after poetry : Enlightenment 'dramma per musica' amid the artsClausius, Katharina Anne Crawford January 2017 (has links)
With its bold combination of epic style and vernacular prose, François Fénelon’s Les Aventures de Télémaque (1699) created a stir that preoccupied the literary, theatrical, musical, and art world throughout the eighteenth century. My dissertation places the novel at the centre of a crucial exchange between the French revisionist movement – with its mandate to redefine neoclassical theatre – and Italian dramma per musica in the second half of the eighteenth century. While littérateurs like Antoine Houdar de la Motte and Voltaire argued publicly over the theoretical viability of prose tragedy on the back of Télémaque, the operatic stage was actively absorbing and experimenting with principles of de la Motte’s new brand of theatre: a less compounded application of the Aristotelian unities, a bolder approach to character portrayal, a painterly approach to scenography, and an integration of tropes from the epic. I rely on two case studies to argue that dramma per musica began to adopt specific principles of de la Motte’s contentious “prose tragedy” genre: Vittorio Amedeo Cigna-Santi’s Mitridate libretto (set by Quirino Gasparini in 1767 and Mozart in 1770), which was based on the same Racine play that incited de la Motte and Voltaire’s animosity; and Giambattista Varesco’s Idomeneo, based on Danchet’s adaptation of Fénelon. Literary scholarship, familiar with the heated paper war incited by Fénelon’s novel thanks to Fabienne Moore and Romira Worville’s research, has so far paid little heed to the eighteenth-century operatic stage as the most prominent and sustained reworking of the neoclassical tragic tradition. In answer to Reinhard Strohm’s appeal to synthesize literary and musicological approaches towards a cross-disciplinary poetics of Enlightenment opera, I show that dramma per musica actively reconfigures a neoclassical tradition in flux alongside the century’s noisiest literary revisionist movement, reimagining theatrical praxis as part of a broader poetics of arts and letters.

L'impact symbolique de la déformation du corps dans L'Homme qui rit de Victor Hugo et dans la peinture de Dominique Ingres / Symbolic impact of the deformation of the body in The Man who laughs by Victor Hugo and in the paintings of Dominique IngresSantos da Silva Mártin, Sílvio 18 May 2013 (has links)
This study focuses on the representation of the deformation of the human body, arguing that these examples of physical deformity have eventually engendered new research and artistic transgressions that characterise nineteenth century France. The works of Hugo and Ingres are focused upon on account of the symbolic richness derived from them with regard to the deformation of the human body, and the confluence of several mythological traditions. For the study of deformed bodies and their role in Hugo's cosmogony, we will use a similar analogous cosmogony: that of Dante Alighieri, which was able to feed the Hugolian imagination and to which we add the existential labyrinth. Methodologically, this analysis will be made by reading the space proposed by Greimas. Orthogonal axes are marked by characters in establishing specific locations that indicate a language to decipher. Regarding the work of Ingres, our goal is to highlight the deformation of the body as a work of aesthetics for the revelation of plastic beauty. Anatomical deformation already characterises his first masculine characters and mark still further his female figures which we have studied in more detail. To refine this approach we have established some relationships with other painters such as David, Ingres' Master, and with his friends the sculptors Lorenzo Bartolini, James Pradier and also with writers such as Théophile Gautier and Hugo. This research is based on several theoretical sources, they are essential to orient this rich universe of references to the Antique, the mythological, the religious, the sacred, the political, the social, the arts, and fantasy. This is why Phidias, Vitruvius, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Jorge Luis Borges, Mircea Eliade, Lévi-Strauss, Michel Foucault, Umberto Eco among others are also discussed to help the understanding of our study.

Vitruvius, memory and imagination : on the production of archaeological knowledge and the construction of classical monumentsMillette, Daniel M. 05 1900 (has links)
As the "Revolution" threatened Rome during the final decades of the Republic, the many
landscapes of the city — built, intellectual, social and natural — became inextricably linked
within a confused cultural matrix. Vitruvius was not simply observing a set of places; he was
living within spaces that, while having lost many of their explicit meanings over time,
contained within them implicit, albeit unclear, cultural codes for him to ponder. Vitruvius in
fact was not describing Roman architecture as it was; he was describing it as he wished it to be. There are a host of reasons to question the physical exactitude of his examples and subsequent models: The vantage point of a single individual living within a specific place at a particular moment in time was, and continues to be, limited at best. There are geographical and architectural inaccuracies that leave the reader wondering if Vitruvius actually saw much of what was inserted within the treatise. And Vitruvius would have generalized in order to arrive at the broad sets of tenets contained in the books.
The "looseness" characterizing the tenets of Vitruvius is precisely what has enabled
imaginative interpretations over the centuries. By including drawings within translations, the classical imagination has become fused with memories of what monuments should look like. Linked to this, translated versions of Vitruvius' treatise can be usurped in order to connect ruins more closely to Roman architectural ideals than they may have been in the first place.
The translation and annotation project of Jean Gardet and Dominique Bertin in the 1550s is an example of how the treatise of Vitruvius was attached, inextricably, to the antiquities of southern France. The habit of turning to the De Architectura in order to produce a body of archaeological knowledge and in turn to provide "proof for the architectural reconstruction of classical monuments has persisted. In the end, the monument can serve as confirmation
for the translated text, and the text re-confirms the monument. In Orange, the use of the treatise by architects has been retraced to show that the reconstructed theater does not correspond, in its rebuilt state, to that which would have stood in its place. Eventually, the habit of turning to Vitruvius was adapted to such an extent that it practically became invisible, with architects and archaeologists turning to it with little thought as to its contextual validity. This is probably why we see so few explicit references to its use in the
literature documenting the re-building of monuments; it is only by retracing field notes that the extent to which it was used, even relatively lately, can be assessed. At the same time, classical archaeology has — and continues to — direct its attention to deblayage, remaniements, consolidations and in time, la sauvegarde. The present-day impetus for these activities is closely connected to history, heritage and ultimately, the notion of patrimoine.
The difficulty today is that the more we re-build, whether it be for basic cultural consumption or within grander state agendas, the recourse to producing related bodies of knowledge to justify architectural plans has the potential to increase significantly. The understanding of classical architecture within the context of history and heritage must be met by a corresponding comprehension of its temporal, formal and social nature; Vitruvius' words, as I have stressed, do not necessarily depict a material architecture. Vitruvius' architect lived within an urban setting that was highly dynamic and not necessarily readily interpreted. And
while Republican spaces derived from a need for function, efficiency, beauty and
representation, they were not necessarily or completely redesigned each time they were reused; they were often modified to suit. Notions related to specific and ideal spaces were most probably stored within the minds of the multifaceted designers to be shaped according to particular sets of pre-existing cultural and built conditions as well as geographical settings. And to these, the craftspeople would have added personal interpretations. Today the problems arise when architects and archaeologists, eager to convince themselves and others of their theoretic, forget that we simply do not know what memories resided in the mind of
Roman architects.

This is a paper in music history presenting a study on French composer Darius Milhaud, his position in the French Nationalist music scene and his connection with Brazil. The paper will attempt to show Milhaud's status as a French composer as viewed through the lens of the Nationalism theories by English author, Anthony D. Smith, and the sociological theories by Pierre Bourdieu concerning the field of symbolic production in classical music. The pap er also covers the influence of the Brazilian music scene on Milhaud's background as a French composer whose oeuvre attracted attention in France during the Interbellum period. A special emphasis is given to the key role that Milhaud's stay in Brazil between 1917 and 1918 played in his compositional experimentations and in the establishment of his career as a composer. Additionally, the paper looks at his connection with tradition and Neoclassicism, and considers a link between the appropriation of Brazilian popular music in Milhaud's oeuvre and the concepts behind the European avant-garde of the time. The paper also sets out to establish a relationship between Milhaud and Villa-Lobos, based on the aesthetics ideals from both Nationalism and the aesthetics of Neoclassicism, during the 1920s and the 1930s

In this work, I present an analysis of Camargo Guarnieri's Segundo Concerto para Piano e Orquestra (1946) taking into account the manifestations of the nationalistic and neoclassical trends in the work of this composer. If, on the one hand, the nationalism steemed from Brazilian early twentieth-century modernists movements aimed to "normalize the permanent ethnical characteristics of the brazilian musicality" (Neves, 1981), on the other hand it also aspired to integrate the country in a global context (Travassos, 1999), a goal which can be detected in the influence of neoclassical aesthetics. In my analysis of the Segundo Concerto, elements which can be traced to the ideas and proposals of the nacionalismo modernista are identified, as well as aesthetical links with the international music trends.
