The use of the Psalms in 1 Peter : an exegetical and hermeneutical study / Gregory Yorath PhillipsPhillips, Gregory Yorath January 2013 (has links)
advancements in Old Testament and New Testament Studies. For example, new
knowledge is available on the variant versions of the Septuagint and application of
the literary concept of intertextuality has yielded significant results in recent biblical
scholarship. However, considering that 1 Peter arguably uses the Old Testament in
the most condensed manner of all the New Testament writings, it is surprising that
relatively few recent studies have been carried out on the use of the Old Testament
in 1 Peter.
As a partial corrective to this situation, this in-depth study is focused on the use of
the Psalms in 1 Peter, utilizing an integrated hermeneutical procedure that combines
traditional grammatical-historical analysis with the state of the art on New Testament
use of the Old Testament. The aim is to clarify the hermeneutical implications of the
use of the Psalms in 1 Peter for Old Testament and New Testament exegesis within
the Reformed tradition today.
Thus, a comprehensive exegetical approach is systematically applied to each
pericope of 1 Peter and to every relevant Psalm passage in order to establish a valid
foundation for understanding how the author interprets the Psalms and how the
Psalm references function within the argument of 1 Peter.
In addition, intertextual resonance is considered as an effective means to enhance
understanding of the function and effect of Psalm references as intended by the
author, and to determine the possible unintended effect of Psalm references upon
the addressees and later readers. Furthermore, consideration of reader response
sometimes makes it possible to identify echoes of Psalm passages not likely
intended by the author, but nevertheless, very likely to have come to the minds of the
recipients with significant effect.
One conclusion of this study is that there is no compelling evidence that the author’s
interpretation of the Psalms ignored the intended meaning of the Psalm in its own
context, or merely reflected contemporary Second Temple interpretations.
Furthermore, it has been possible to refine the criteria for identifying and classifying
Psalm allusions rather than merely following broad, predetermined criteria. Thus, a
distinction is made between specific allusion, in which case the author’s argument
depends upon recognition of specific Psalm passages, and general allusion, in which
case the author’s argument depends upon a concept recognizably derived from the
Psalms but not limited by the wording of specific references.
This study also demonstrates that the use of the Psalms in 1 Peter is based upon a
strong sense of solidarity with believers of the past, especially as they expressed
their responses to God in the context of suffering. In particular, compared with other
New Testament writings, 1 Peter stands out for the fact that the majority of its Psalm
allusions are used for the purpose of developing and reapplying significant themes. Thus, 1 Peter provides compelling reason for present-day interpreters to view theme
development as a valid and effective way to apply the Psalms to the circumstances
of Christian believers as they face the challenge of living faithfully in new contexts of

In the presentation of his Gospel in his letter to the Romans Paul often quotes from the Old
Testament. This indicates the functional significance of the OT as the foundation of Paul´s
argumentation. However, is Paul´s use of Scripture legitimate? Does Paul change and
misinterpret Scripture to fit his own ends? If Paul´s argumentation with Scripture follows
contemporary, legitimate early Jewish methods of interpretation, then he could be cleared of
the charge of manipulatively changing and interpreting Scripture. This thesis examines the
textual basis of these quotations, the interpretive methods employed and the function of
such quotations for Paul´s argumentation. The results suggest that Paul has not
manipulated the textual basis. He employs the interpretive techniques of early Judaism and
refers to Scripture mainly to affirm his presentation of the Gospel. A final section raises the

Summaries in German and English / The Geneva model of discourse analysis is a linguistic tool developed by Eddy Roulet and his
team in Geneva. It was first presented in its modular approach in 1999. This dissertation
examines whether the Geneva model can be applied to New Testament texts and whether this
application yields results for exegesis. I first explain the model with its five basic modules and
twelve organization forms, giving examples from German texts as well as simple New
Testament examples. Then I apply the model to two New Testament texts (Rom 6:1,11 and
John 8:31,42), summarizing the results in relation to exegesis at the end of each analysis. In
the final chapter I discuss which parts of the Geneva model should generally be applied to
New Testament exegesis, explaining its potential and its limitations and suggesting some
areas in which the Geneva model could be complemented by other approaches. / Das Genfer Modell ist ein von Eddy Roulet und seinem Team in Genf entwickelter
linguistischer Ansatz zur Diskursanalyse. Er wurde 1999 erstmalig in seiner modularen

This dissertation attempts to illuminate the significance of what has been called the "coworkers"
for Paul's mission. At the same time it revises the traditional portrait of Paul as a
"lone ranger", not properly understood and appreciated by others. Thus the focus is on the
way in which Paul together with his co-workers as his missionary partners achieved the
various tasks of early Chrisian mission, namely the proclamation of the gospel and the
consolidation of churches. This phenomenon is best described with the German term
Kollegialmission, i.e. a mission carried by a team of colleagues.
A survey of research is followed by a detailed analysis of this phenomenon in the letters
commonly recognised as written by Paul himself. In additon to explicit statements on the
co-workers, attention is also given to implicit references, e.g. verb forms in the first person
plural which appear in some letters and contribute to understanding this Kollegialmission.
Then the same methodological procedure is applied to the disputed letters of Paul. A final
chapter examines the portrait of Paul and his co-workers in the Book of Acts.
This dissertation demonstrates that this understanding and practice of Kollegialmission
was a central point in Paul's mission and self-understanding. His co-workers receive their
commission and authority from God, to whom they are responsible. The gospel constitutes
the foundation for this cooperation between Paul and his co-workers. Thus the co-workers
perform the same duties as Paul himself, though his special apostolate remains in place.
The picture of the Kollegialmission in the Deuteropauline letters differs only slightly from
that of the letters generally recognised as Paul's own. As the author of Acts is mainly
interested in the person of Paul, his co-workers appear increasingly on the backstage as the
story unfolds. This examination closes with an application of some principles of Paul's

It endeavoured to make a contribution to a period in the history of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) against the background of strife in matters related to the church, politics and other
areas.
Groenewald taught New Testament subjects as professor at the Faculty of Theology (Section 8 - DRC) at the University of Pretoria for 33 years. As one of the first four professors of the new Faculty
of Theology he helped to lay a sound foundation. He served as dean of the Faculty for 21 years (1948 - 1969). As administrator and lecturer he played an important role in the establishment, recognition and development of the Faculty. He was a born exegete, the Nestor of New Testament science in SA. He is regarded as a great theologian and the doyen of New Testament research and exegesis in SA.
As writer of Afrikaans theological literature Groenewald undeniably fulfilled the role of a pioneer. This was recognised by the award of the Stals-prize for Theology to him, the first time in history. Apart from this he received four honourary doctorates and various other important
awards. He made an important contribution to Bible translation and translatory science.
As church and cultural leader he strove to find solutions for the problems of his church and people. He made a significant contribution in the ecumenical field.
Apartheid was given its biblical foundation by Groenewald during the forties. His intention was to stimulate thought in the search for a solution to the serious racial problem.
Further facets of Groenewald's work await research in order to paint a
representative theological portrait of him. / Die studie fokus op die lewe en werk van Evert Philippus Groenewald in kerkhistoriese perspektief binne die konteks van die twintigste eeu. Die klem het op die periode tussen die dertiger- en tagtigerjare geval. Daar is gepoog om 'n bydrae te lewer tot 'n tydperk in die geskiedenis van die NGK teen die agtergrond van die stryd wat op vele gebiede gevoer is. Die invloed van vroom ouers, 'n aantal ingrypende gebeurtenisse in sy lewe en die eise van die tyd het hom ge·inspireer. Hy was kind en teoloog van sy tyd, egter ook van sy kerk. Wat hy verwoord het was deel van die NGK se Calvinistiese en gereformeerde historiese erfenis en die NGK se beleid. Hy het sy eie teologiese stempel egter ongetwyfeld daarop afgedruk.
Hy onderrig vir 33 jaar (1938 tot 1970) Nuwe Testamentiese vakke as professor aan die Teofogiese Fakulteit (Afd 8) van UP. As een van die eerste vier professore help hy om 'n stewige grondslag te le. Die wyse waarop apartheid algaande toegepas is, het meegebring dat daar afgewyk is van wat Groenewald in 1947 beoog het. Dit het in 'n ideologiese monster ontaard wat groot pyn en lyding veroorsaak het.
Groenewald was een van 'n klein aantal kerkfigure wat met hul dade in die twintigste eeu van stryd en worsteling die Suid-Afrikaanse kerkgeskiedenis verryk het. Romans 7 within the context of Romans 5-8. Chapter 1 involved a survey of the problem that led to the investigation and a discussion of a number of approaches offered as an interpretation for understanding Romans 7. Chapter 2 centred on an investigation into the nature of Paul's audience in Rome. Chapter 3 investigated the purpose of the letter as a help to understanding the rhetorical function of Romans 7. Chapter 4 dealt with the rhetorical function of Romans 7. The causa underlying Paul's rhetoric in Romans 7 was a tendency among Gentile Christians to want to return to the law. Paul set out strongly to counter this tendency because it was incompatible with their position in Christ and would foil his plans in respect of the Gentile Christians in Rome and of the Gospel to

im Prozess gesellschaftlicher Kommunikation präsentiert wird und welche Deutungen ihr gegeben
werden. Bei abnehmender christlicher Sozialisation kommt der medialen Vermittlung
eine zunehmende Bedeutung zu. Ausgehend von den Kontroversen um eine Darstellung des Lebens Jesu im
Film soll gezeigt werden, dass die Passion Jesu als Kerngeschichte des Christentums in diesem
Medium erzählt werden kann, was aus theologischer Sicht dabei zu beachten ist und welche kritische
Funktion speziell der neutestamentlichen Wissenschaft dabei zukommt. Sowohl die Notwendigkeit
audiovisueller Präsentation der Passion als auch deren Interpretation durch begleitende
Verkündigung im sozialen Kontext werden herausgearbeitet. / This thesis uses selected films to examine how the passion of Jesus is presented within the
process of social communication and which interpretation it is given. The decline of christian
socialisation leads to rising importance of communication by media. Starting with the controversies
about making films about the life of Jesus it will be shown, that the passion of Jesus as a central
story of christianity can be told in this media, what should be observed from a theological point
of view and the critical function of especially New Testament scholarship. The necessity of
audiovisual presentation of the passion as well as its interpretation completed by preaching within

auseinander. Einer vorläufigen Betrachtung der Entwicklung und des Gebrauchs des zentralen Leidens-
Begriffs folgt die ausführliche Untersuchung und Darstellung der Urheber des Leidens und der
Ursachen und Gründe für rechtes und falsches Leiden. Es folgt unter Berücksichtigung einiger
kulturanthropologischer Einsichten und moderner psychologischer Analysen bezüglich der Wirkung
von verbaler Gewalt eine Betrachtung der Arten und Formen des Leidens sowie der Begründungen und
Ziele des Leiden. Der zweite Hauptteil untersucht Verhaltensanweisungen, Trost und Anleitung zur
Leidensbewältigung, die der Verfasser seinen Empfängern zukommen lässt. Dabei wird zum einen ein
Vergleich zwischen den Aussagen des Ersten Petrusbriefs und der antiken Konsolationsliteratur
vorgenommen, zum anderen zwischen den vorgeschlagenen Bewältigungsstrategien des Briefes und

detailed survey of research, it begins with an examination of the development and use of the
terminology for suffering. This is followed by a thorough examination of the origin of suffering
and the causes and reasons for right and false suffering. Careful attention to Greek
lexicography and grammar is combined with rhetorical criticism. Analysis of both the forms of
suffering and the reasons and purposes of suffering is combined with insights from cultural
anthropology and modern studies of the effects of verbal violence. The second main part
examines the behavioural instructions, comfort and ways of coping with suffering.
Furthermore, 1 Peter is compared with the comfort given in various ancient consolation
literatures. In addition, the strategies for coping with discrimination and suffering in 1 Peter are
compared to insights from modern social psychology. A concluding chapter summarises the

The status of environmental literacy and Christian environmental stewardship in selected training institutions of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern AfricaTshenye, Rantshabo Daniel 11 1900 (has links)
Despite the fact that the Bible as the inspired Word of God deals primarily with the relationship between God and humankind and the way to salvation and eternal life, the Bible also presents tenets that entreat the protection of the natural and biophysical world. Consequently, since the environment is a foremost aspect of God’s creation it is appropriate to establish the Biblical perspective on creation as a whole and Christians’ subsequent position and duty to creation.
Humankind has been ecologically irresponsible. Greed, inadequate knowledge and negligence have led to exploitation, degradation, and disregard for the natural environment. Unfortunately, there appears to be a “deep silence” within the Christian Church worldwide as well as in South Africa on believers’ role and duty towards the natural created environment. The premise underpinning this thesis is that God’s redemptive care applies not only to people, but also to the whole of creation and that believers have a Biblical mandate to care for the natural environment and afford it its concomitant value. The Bible provides believers with directives regarding environmental care summarised in God’s requirement for man to “work [the earth] and take care of it” (Gen. 2: 15).
The anticipated outcomes of this research were to establish the status of Environmental Stewardship as a dimension Christian Stewardship and the level of Environmental Literacy provided for in the curricula of theological seminaries of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa. The study further attempted to determine the level of understanding and stance of ministers, lecturers, elders and students towards these issues.
Believers have a duty of care in relation to God’s creation in totality – both humanity and the natural environment.
