MMA, den förbjudna frukten – En kvantitativ studie om hur svensk nyhetsmedia gestaltar MMA

Bringsén, Filip January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine how MMA is portrayed in Swedish news mediasince historically speaking there has been a stigma about the sport and news media tends to depict it in a very violent manner, which previous studies also shows. The study appliestwo theoretical perspectives, framing theory and moral panic. Through a quantitativecontent analysis combined with a framing analysis a selection of articles are analyzed from some of the biggest sources of news media in Sweden, Aftonbladet, Expressen and SVT Nyheter as well as two MMA focused ones, Kimura and MMANytt. This is done toexamine how different types of news media depicts MMA and, in that way, see differencesand similarities to create a comprehensive understanding of the problem. The results show that the sport has grown and become more legitimate the last few years when compared to previous studies. Despite this a level of moral panic is being mediated in the way articles frame both the sport and its practitioners.

“Madness” in the Media: How Can Print Journalists Better Report on Mental Illnesses?

Cousineau, Anna Desiree 08 1900 (has links)
Stereo types and stigmas of individuals with mental illnesses have proved to be a major roadblock preventing these individuals from seeking help. The news media, despite having a responsibility to accurately inform the public, has played a significant role in portraying individuals with mental illness as violent, unpredictable, dangerous, and unfit to live with the rest of “normal” society. This happens through the words journalists choose to use and the information they choose in included, and excluded, when reporting on mental health issues. This study attempts to establish a guideline that journalists can follow that will hopefully reduce the stigma of mental illness in the media, and eventually in society. This study used a 2 x 2 ANCOVA to test two independent variables (amount of labeling terms and amount of corrective information). The variables were manipulated by modifying a news article four times to produce articles with varying levels of labeling terms and corrective information. A control article was also be used. The articles were randomized and passed out to 220 undergraduate college students at the University of North Texas who completed a questionnaire, read their assigned article, and then completed a second questionnaire to determine the impact the article had on their attitudes about individuals with mental illnesses.

Zobrazení prezidenta Trumpa v agentuře ČTK / Image of President Donald Trump in the Czech News Agency

Poláček, Daniel January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis entitled "Image of President Donald Trump in the Czech News Agency" closely examines how the Czech News Agency provided information to the Czech readers about the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump whose time in office (January 20 2017 until January 20 2021) brought a number of changes and controversies. One of the most notable one to mention are the US withdrawal from The Paris Climate Agreement or the accusation that the Republican president secretly cooperated with Russia before a unanticipated victory in 2016 elections. The research of Trump's media image in the public agency CTK is based on quantitative analysis of topics as well as a qualitative approach to evaluating the tonality of each individual article.

Bilden av muslimer och araber i amerikansk media veckan efter terrorattackerna den elfte september 2001 : A Qualitative Content Analysis of how Muslims and Arabs are depicted in American news media the week after 9/11.

Ahmed Abdi, Mahomed January 2021 (has links)
The aim with this research essay is to examine how Muslims and Arabs are depicted in aselection of four American newspapers following the terror attack on the World Trade Center andthe Pentagon. In order to examine my two main question, I have two theories in which myresearch is based on and they are the framing theory and the postcolonial theory. Said’s theorieson orientalism are also big part of this research essay. For my method, I have chosen a qualitativecontent analysis. This form of method gives me the opportunity to study the newspaper in depthand to identify the framework in which the newspaper operates in. It is my aim to showcase howMuslims and Arabs are seen by the American media landscape and how news media can shapeour understanding of the world we live in. Be using word such as terrorism, Middle Easternbased when writing about Muslims and Arabs, the general public will associate Islam withterrorism. How we interpret the news is largely due to how we view the world around us, and byusing hidden codes news media can shape one’s perspective on the world.

Living with climate change : A critical examination of global news agencies and their representations of women in the context of climate change

Netz, Veronica January 2020 (has links)
This study strives to provide an insight as to how gender is dealt with by global news agencies within the context of climate change. The capacity to adapt to change is shaped by power relations related to social identities of people and group. Gender is a key element of these identities. Global news agencies are to a large extent responsible for what we see and understand of that world. However, in the media research field, few media studies has examined how global news agencies discusses gender in the context of climate change. Through a critical discourse analysis combined with a postcolonial feminist perspective, this study has closely examined articles about climate change from the world’s three largest news agencies - Reuters, Associate Press and Agence France-Presse. Through the analysis four main categories have emerged: Poor women in need of help; Women getting help; Women within familial systems; and Women as experts. The result showed that the concepts of women was narrow and existed within imperialistic, mainstream discourses on women. Through these discursive constructions of women, news agencies risk reinforce a North-South bias and stereotypes of the ‘third world woman’.

Otrygghet på svenska redaktioner. Hat, arbetsbelastning eller utLASning? En översikt av svenska journalisters arbetsmiljö / Editorial vulnerability – Hate, workload or job security? A review of Swedish journalists’ working environment

Liljeström, Elias January 2020 (has links)
Although the Nordic countries have consistently ranked at the top of the Press Freedom Index for the last decade they aren’t a monolith, untouched by the rise of populism, authoritarianism and its frequent attacks on the press; a scourge of democratic nations during the last vestiges of the 2010s. Nor have their media managed to escape the rocky seas of finding viable market solutions in an increasingly accelerating and expanding digital reality.  Intimidation and harassment, heavy workloads and job insecurity are tangible threats for journalists. The aim of this study was to examine to which extent these factors are sources of stress, vulnerability and feelings of insecurity for some Swedish journalists working in the field and within editorial environs today. A qualitative approach of in-depth interviews with a few active journalists, editorial department safety representatives as well as union representatives comprise the main, albeit small, chunk of this paper’s empirical data. The results were then analysed and compared to prior research including but not limited to; Threats towards journalists, public trust and views of Swedish media, the labour market, economic prospects of Swedish media and the technical requirements and workloads of today’s journalists in Sweden.  The results showed that although threats and intimidation tactics towards journalists were commonplace – and risks stifling media discourse – it was not the main cause of the interviewed journalists’ perception of insecurity; mainly due to its intermittency and subject-related predictability. Heavy workloads were instead put forth as a major component of everyday stress, this was in part explained by personnel downsizing without corresponding reductions in production as well as a trend towards less niche multi-role journalists. Job insecurity and employer sided exploitation of employment laws were also cited as main sources of discontent and stress, leading to a high degree of job vulnerability and diminishing work satisfaction.  Although the scope of this paper did not allow for a large sample size the findings still gives an interesting insight into the real working environment of some Swedish journalists.

Invasionens första vecka : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys av Rysslands invasion av Ukraina 2022 i svenska nyhetsmedier / The first week of the invasion : A quantitative content analysis of Russia's invasion of Ukraine 2022 in Swedish news media

Johansson, Sara, Håkansson, Lydia January 2022 (has links)
News journalism is a great source of information about things that happen beyond our own reality. The need to take part in news is something that is increasing during a crisis and despite the development of social media and the internet, the traditional media still fulfill a socially important function. Against this background, we believe that it is important to analyze the content of the media in order to gain a greater understanding of what mass communication looks like and what effects it can have. The purpose of the study has therefore been to investigate the framing of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The study examined articles published by the news media Aftonbladet and SVT during the first week of the invasion to investigate the framing of the reporting at an early stage. The study is based on a quantitative method as the purpose has been to investigate how frequently actors, different frames and presentations are used. The framing theory has previously been used to investigate, discuss and analyze the interpretations that are made. This study shows that official sources are most common. This is in line with previous research and is explained by the fact that journalists turn to official sources in times of crisis to get information about what has happened. The results of the study also showed that the episodic presentation was more common in the reporting of the invasion, however, it was more common for the thematic framing to be used in articles about economics. The results thus show that it is more common to report on individual events than to put them in a larger context. There is a certain difference in the use of frameworks where Aftonbladet portrays human interest and morality more than SVT. An increase in the use of these frameworks in Swedish war journalism has been noted.

COVID-19 Pandemic: To Be in the Focus of Media : A Critical Discourse Analysis of Denmark and Sweden's News Media's Reporting on the Coronavirus Pandemic in 2020

Ta, Sofia January 2021 (has links)
Aim and research questions: This study investigates how the corona pandemic COVID-19 has been noticed and presented in the news reporting of a Danish newspaper and a Swedish newspaper in their digital news feed. The study is based on the following questions: ● What discursive themes can be identified in Danish and Swedish news reporting on COVID-19 in 2020? ● What are linguistic features used in the headline of the articles in Danish and Swedishnews media? ● How can the Danish and Swedish media reports on COVID-19 be explained by discourse analysis and theoretical framework? Method and material: The study has used a qualitative method with a critical discourse analysis that uses Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional analysis model to analyze a total of 48 articles from Aftonbladet and Kristeligt Dagblad. Main result: The study results show an overview of how news media reporting from Aftonbladet and Kristeligt Dagblad shapes the COVID-19 pandemic with four discursive themes: infection, information, restriction, and immunity. They shaped the discourses onCOVID-19 through a critical perspective in relation to the actions of politicians and authorities and their handling. Linguistic features are used to construct our society during the pandemic to capture readers' attention through the headlines. These have been in the form of metaphorical and charged words that reflect either negative or positive emotional reactions. It also highlights that the media has an influence on how things look; they can consciously or unconsciously make us feel a certain way. As a result, people perceive things differently and can sometimes misunderstand information.

“No wonder I went into the wall” : How burnout narratives are constructed in Finnish and Swedish media

Kytölahti, Anna-Reetta January 2021 (has links)
This thesis aims to contribute to the existing literacy of how mental health is portrayed in news media. The topic has been of interest to many scholars, mostly focusing on depression, schizophrenia, and mental health in general. In the past couple of years, a new phenomenon has gained attention and space in media: burnout, that is, a state of mental and physical exhaustion caused by chronic, usually work-related, stress. However, burnout has so far only been included in media studies as one aspect among many, thus arguing for its worth as a specific subject of a study. Using the method of critical narrative analysis, this thesis delves into news articles published in Swedish and Finnish mainstream media, investigating the personal stories of individuals who had experienced burnout and asking whose stories are getting told in media as well as how these influence the public image of burnout. Three common narratives and two core discourses were identified in the data: ‘the narrative of a lesson learned’, ‘the narrative as an exemplum’, ‘the conversion narrative’, ‘discourse of shame and stigma’, and ‘discourse of the individual in charge of their own destiny’. These portray burnout as a life-altering experience, where it is the individual who is expected to make the necessary changes in their life, rather than critiquing the working culture. Furthermore, the narratives exclusively portray the burnout experiencers as white and middle-class, thus raising a question of relatability. Since burnout has not been extensively studied as a topic of its own before, this thesis provides a starting point, but further research with different geographical focus and with different methods is needed to form a more complete picture of how burnout narratives are constructed in media.
