January 2011 (has links)
Some of the features analyzed here belong to the discourse, taken as a genre, which is composed of utterances that manifest values and are generated by members of the particular sphere of activity mostly made up of journalists. The study compares the editorial projects of Folha with a volume of editorial project of the magazine Superinteressante, as well as Folha's projects with one another, aiming to capture their dynamic nature, their historical evolution, the establishment of their conceptualization of journalism and the position as a company of the that newspaper as manifested in their texts. The analysis shows that the newspaper found it necessary to change in order to face the competition from other newspapers, television and, above all, from the new treatment given to information with the creation of the Internet. It also shows that, in this period of over 30 years of editorial projects, Folha solidified its vision as a company and its notion of information as a commodity / Doutor

Nolan, Jamie Melissa 01 January 2010 (has links)
This framing analysis used content analysis to show how a newspaper with a more liberal slant, The Age, and a newspaper with a more conservative slant, The Australian, used frames, sources, and valence in their news and opinion coverage of a very complex scientific and political issue ? climate change. The sample included 1,019 news and opinion articles from 1997 through 2007 in The Australian and The Age. The study revealed that the controversy over climate change was still prevalent in two Australian newspapers. Results showed that The Australian and The Age displayed different prominent frames, sources, and valence in their climate change coverage. Overall, The Australian was more critical and uncertain about climate change, while The Age aimed to educate its readers about the background of the issue and inspire action.

The argumentation belongs to the Family of human actions which objective is to persuade through the conviction or seduction. However the rhetorical of the persuasion requires that the interlocutors should be convinced that were not convinced, and like that, the persuasion tends to be highly implicit. Through the history, the appropriate way of studying the argumentation has been debate for several philosophical traditions, including the formal logic; however, it has raised certain issues when applied to the argumentation of the real life. The informal logic, or pragmaticsdialectic – on the other hand, is an approach relatively recent that focuses in arguments of the real life. It includes pragmatics intra views with the dialectics and emphasizes the rhetorical factors importance in argumentation and persuasion of people, showing the effectiveness of the argument in centered factors in hearing. Since the cognitive pragmatic point of view, the meaning goes further – is the recovery of the intentional information, and not or not only the action social standards. The research supported in the linguistics systemic-functional, a multifunctional theory indicated like be appropriated to the critic’s speech analysis. The editorial’s analysis shows that the implicit persuasion occurs in the underlay of the text and that to its revelation is necessary the focus in the relationship among the lexicon-grammatical choices made in the microstructure of the text with the values, which are in the macrostructure of the speech. The research aims to answer the following questions. (a) How is the structure of an argumentation? How it starts, how is perceived, developed and how it ends? (b) What is the roll of the way to evaluate in the persuasion, coursing the editorial? (c) How is made the implicit persuasion?

Os recursos persuasivos no editorial de jornal sob a perspectiva da lingüística sistêmico-funcional / The persuasive resources in the newspaper editorial under the perspective of systemic functional linguistics

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ivone Hiromi Oda.pdf: 566253 bytes, checksum: 264fe70c61b800e4a6a973d84c551540 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-06-23 / The present study is a social semiotic account of a newspaper editorial, which draws on both Halliday s (1985, 1994) Systemic Functional Linguistics and Fairclough s Critical Discourse Analysis. Of particular interest is the persuasion explicit or implicit present in an editorial from the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. The aim of a critical linguistic analysis of a text is to unfold the meanings hidden in its lexical, semantic, syntactic structures as they gradually mediate the general meaning, and to observe how these meanings help to build its ideological content. As Fairclough (1989: 1) states, consciousness is the first step towards emancipation ; he also notes how differences in style or textual strategies in these texts suggest a voice , characteristic of the newspaper in which they are published. What distinguishes the editorial is not the values-and-beliefs offered, but the use of textual strategies that accentuates the act of speech of values-and-beliefs offered, he adds. There are always different ways to say the same thing, and these ways are not accidental alternatives: differences in expression bring ideological distinctions and so bring differences in representation. Thus, I examine an editorial taking into account the pragmatic dimension of this genre, which involves the notion of frame, as a framework that contains the question of intertext in itself, and therefore the notions of reported speech; of crypt-argumentation or secret argumentation; and of footing. The latter heralds the author´s position through the concept of appraisal, which involves the notion of tokens of attitude. The analysis, having these theoretical supports as background, will apply the proposal of fallacies and enthymemes in argumentation, by Lauerbach (2007) and by Toulmin (1958) respectively. And, based on evaluative dimensions by Lemke (1998), I will check (a) the linguistic nature of evaluation within such text; (b) the lexico-grammatical items that express this evaluation; and (c) how (a) and (b) concur for construing the editorial argumentations and, in last instance, for building discourse persuasion within this text / O presente estudo, de caráter semiótico-social, na esteira da Lingüística Sistêmico- Funcional de Halliday (1985, 1994) e seus colaboradores, enfoca o gênero editorial jornalístico no jornal Folha de S.Paulo, do ponto de vista da análise crítica do discurso, examinando a persuasão explícita e implícita presentes na interação através da escrita.

Intercultural rhetoric of English newspaper editorials: An analysis of the Daily Graphic and the New York Times

Wornyo, Albert Agbesi 21 September 2018 (has links)
PhD (English) / Department of English / This study sought to analyse the discourse strategies in the editorials of the Daily Graphic newspaper as texts constructed in an African English as a Second Language (ESL) setting and the editorials of the New York Times of America as texts constructed in an Anglo-American English environment. The objective of the study was to discover the differences and the similarities that exist between the discourse strategies of the editorials of the Daily Graphic newspaper and the editorials of the New York Times. This objective is achieved by analysing five features of text. First, the rhetorical structure of the two editorials were analysed to find out the rhetorical strategies used in composing the editorials. Second, the micro-genre variation between the two editorials was examined. In addition, the thematic development of the two editorials was carried out. Also, the study investigated the rhetorical appeals preferred by the editorials from the two different socio-cultural settings. Finally, as newspaper editorials, the use of attribution was studied to find out how the editorials disclose the sources of their information to make it clear to their readers where they get their information from. The findings of the study revealed some differences and some similarities in the discourse strategies employed by the two editorials. The Daily Graphic as a newspaper published in an ESL setting in Africa exhibited the unique use of some discourse features that reflect the socio-cultural setting different from that of the New York Times as a newspaper published in the socio-cultural environment of Anglo-American English. / NRF

'More than America': some New Zealand responses to American culture in the mid-twentieth century.

Whitcher, Gary Frederick January 2011 (has links)
This thesis focuses on a transformational but disregarded period in New Zealand’s twentieth century history, the era from the arrival of the Marines in 1942 to the arrival of Rock Around the Clock in 1956. It examines one of the chief agents in this metamorphosis: the impact of American culture. During this era the crucial conduits of that culture were movies, music and comics. The aims of my thesis are threefold: to explore how New Zealanders responded to this cultural trinity, determine the key features of their reactions and assess their significance. The perceived modernity and alterity of Hollywood movies, musical genres such as swing, and the content and presentation of American comics and ‘pulps’, became the sources of heated debate during the midcentury. Many New Zealanders admired what they perceived as the exuberance, variety and style of such American media. They also applauded the willingness of the cultural triptych to appropriate visual, textual and musical forms and styles without respect for the traditional classifications of cultural merit. Such perceived standards were based on the privileged judgements of cultural arbiters drawn from members of New Zealand’s educational and civic elites. Key figures within these elites insisted that American culture was ‘low’, inferior and commodified, threatening the dominance of a sacrosanct, traditional ‘high’culture. Many of them also maintained that these American cultural imports endangered both the traditionally British nature of our cultural heritage, and New Zealand’s distinctively ‘British’ identity. Many of these complaints enfolded deeper objections to American movies, music and literary forms exemplified by comics and pulps. Significant intellectual and civic figures portrayed these cultural modes as pernicious and malignant, because they were allegedly the product of malignant African-American, Jewish and capitalist sources, which threatened to poison the cultural and social values of New Zealanders, especially the young. In order to justify such attitudes, these influential cultural guardians portrayed the general public as an essentially immature, susceptible, unthinking and puritanical mass. Accordingly, this public, supposedly ignorant of the dangers posed by American culture, required the intervention and protection of members of this elite. Responses to these potent expressions of American culture provide focal points which both illuminate and reflect wider social, political and ideological controversies within midcentury New Zealand. Not only were these reactions part of a process of comprehension and negotiation of new aesthetic styles and media modes. They also represent an arena of public and intellectual contention whose significance has been neglected or under-valued. New Zealanders’ attitudes towards the new cinematic, literary and musical elements of American culture occurred within a rich and revealing socio-political and ideological context. When we comment on that culture we reveal significant features of our own national and cultural selves.
