Who are abusing our children? An exploratory study on reflections on child abuse by media commentators

Merchant, Raema Unknown Date (has links)
This research explores what has been published in the print media on the topic of physical child abuse over an eight year period of time. The study encompasses news reports, feature articles, opinion columns and editorials written on the issue of physical child abuse in New Zealand from 2000 to 2007. Using inductive and exploratory research, qualitative data has been collected by capturing the voices from a range of media commentators and comparing these with data from newspaper articles and other sources of statistical data obtained from a statutory child protection agency, hospitals and police. The research looks at how physical child abuse is represented in the newspaper media and explores whether there are accuracies or deficiencies in this reporting that may impact on public perceptions of child abuse. In particular, the study explores whether what is being written in the newspaper is objective or whether there is an in-built ethnic or social bias in the reporting of child abuse. The findings of the three parts of the study are integrated and it is determined that there is a disproportionate reporting of child abuse based on a) the ethnicity of the child or perpetrator, b) the seriousness of the abuse, and c) the sensationalist nature of the incident of child abuse. Another significant finding is that media reflects and reinforces common views and perceptions of physical child abuse and that the public are exposed to only the “tip of the iceberg” in terms of accurate and balanced reporting. The report concludes with a discussion about whether the media affects or reflects the worldview of physical child abuse. A symbiotic model is proposed which uses voices from the writers themselves to support the argument that there is a bi-directional relationship between the media and the public.

Jacobsson, Lovisa, Lindebring, Veronica January 2016 (has links)
In this study, an analysis of the Swedish newspaper media's representation of the climate issue have been done. Through a critical discourse analysis, newspaper articles, from three different newspapers, have been studied to examine how newspapers represented the climate issue and why it is important how the newspapers represent the climate issue. The newspapers that have been studied are Svenska Dagbladet, Expressen and Norrköping´s Tidningar. These papers provide a broad picture of the Swedish newspaper media and represent different levels, a daily newspaper, a tabloid and a local newspaper. The study also investigated whether the number of articles increases during COP21 (Conference of Parties) in Paris in November/December 2015. The study's hypothesis is that the number of newspapers that represent the climate issue is increasing in the context of a climate event, where the selected climatic event for this study is the COP21. The critical discourse analysis leans against Faircloughs three-dimensional model as a tool to be able to make a critical discourse analysis. In the study a qualitative and quantitative analysis has been carried out. Based on these analysis, different discourses were identified in the material. The material consisted of 90 articles, 71 from Svenska Dagbladet, 13 from Expressen and 6 from Norrköping's Tidningar. The quantitative analysis examined the recurring concepts and how often the concepts reappeared in these articles and the qualitative analysis studied including the voices highlighted in the articles. This study identified three major discourses that dominate the study area, "Global warming as a problem," "The climate requires changes in behaviour and lifestyle," and "The climate as a cost issue." In the material, some items could also be identified which fall into a discourse identified by Anshelm (2012) "The industrial fatalism". In the study, a future discourse could also be identified, "Climate Refugees", which is considered to be on the rise. This is assumed as the number of climate refugees will only increase over the years as a result of climate change. From the study it can be concluded that the media's representation of the climate issue is important for the public to get a good picture of the outside world and ongoing climate change. One can see that the media mainly produces climate change as a global environmental problem, but also as an economic and social problems. Two aspects of the social problem are that we both need to change our behaviour, but also that women and the poor are most vulnerable and most affected by climate change. One can also see that a climate event, like COP21 affect the media's coverage of climate issues, providing an increased number of articles during the period of the event.

Magnusson, Andreas January 2012 (has links)
The purpose with this examination essay was to find out how newspapers, both morning- and evening, did chose to relate to the government bill 2008/09:140 – A useable defence. This governmental bill implied a new Swedish military reformation. The reformation relies on voluntary military service and no longer conscription. The method used in the essay is a qualitative text analysis. The search criteria’s during the analysis of the newspapers contained: Cost, availability and usability, state of readiness, recruitment difficulties and civil-anchoring. The theory used for this essay is a framing theory. The approach to concerned newspapers conforms to general, regarding media- and communication, science. The essay elucidates that there are big differences between the newspapers regarding questions about the Swedish defence. It appears that most newspapers have a bourgeois approach. The newspapers with this approach tend to write more about topics concerning the Swedish armed forces. There is a big difference between the newspapers due to how they use the interpretation theory in stories or leaders. The difference becomes noticeable between morning- and evening newspapers. The essay also elucidates that the newspaper leaders prove to be more truthful than expected. The leaders tend to strengthen their thoughts with reliable sources. Regarding the power of the media the essay indicate that the real power exists among the leaders and not among the news stories.
