Challenges and strategies of civil society approaching the state: the case of ABIA (Brazilian Interdisciplinary AIDS Association) and the governance in the HIV/AIDS policy.

Pipitone, Federico January 2021 (has links)
The Brazilian HIV/AIDS policy faced a structural change with the political shifts that, starting in 2016, led to the election of a right-wing president in 2018. Focusing on the relation between the state and civil society, this work will help understand the evolution of the spaces for civil society to advocate for sexual rights related to HIV/AIDS. This research examines the case of the Brazilian Interdisciplinary AIDS Association (ABIA) and its relations with the different components of the state and other members of civil society. Data collection is built upon semi-structured interviews to evaluate factors that allowed the viability of a long advocacy trajectory and understand old and new strategies to face challenges in the social and political spaces. Further discussion concerns the strategies for the sustainability of advocacy in a field that has been threatened by national and international structural changes. The hypothesis is that thanks to the maturation of a solid network of intellectuals and activists, as well as figures from other fields, and thanks to strategical adaptation to changing times, ABIA has managed to fuel advocacy both within and outside institutional arenas, either on a more constructive or more conflictual level.

To Empower Ethiopian Women : A Minor Field Study of how the Gender Reforms of the Ethiopian Government impact on Non-Governmental Organisations work with Women Empowerment

Tegnell, Frida January 2020 (has links)
Ethiopia is a country that for centuries has been dominated by men. However, since 2018, the Prime Minister Abiye Ahmed has introduced gender reforms, including a gender balanced cabinet. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how the gender reforms affect three non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in their work to empower women. The paper focuses on the following research questions: 1) How do non-governmental organisations work with women empowerment in Ethiopia? 2) To what extent and how have non-governmental organisations been affected by the gender reforms of the Ethiopian government that took office in 2018? 3) How have Ethiopian women been affected by the gender reforms of the Ethiopian government that took office in 2018 according to non-governmental organisations? The paper follows the theoretical framework by Dibie and Dibie, and Bratton as analytical framework. The methodological framework that has been used is a qualitative method, conducting semi- structured interviews. The NGOs main approach in relation to women empowerment is Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Women Watch Groups. The NGOs are unanimous that the gender reforms have improved NGOs relationship with the government due to a new law that was implemented in relation to the reforms. Finally, the NGOs have a positive image of Ethiopian women’s future and argues that the gender reforms empower women.

A qualitative study of Swedish environmental non-governmental organizations work with and perspective on sustainable development in relation to Agenda 2030 and green economics

Settlin, Martina, Bäck Persson, Kristin January 2020 (has links)

Vliv multikulturalismu na organizace občanské společnosti / Effects of multiculturalism on civil society organizations

Michalíková, Lenka January 2017 (has links)

Strategic internal communication in international non-governmental organisations

Hume, Jessica Mary 20 May 2011 (has links)
The role and importance of international non-governmental organisations (INGOs) has increased with globalisation and the growth of global institutions. Not only do INGOs play a major role in aid delivery in developing countries, they also serve as the voice of the people in the growing global governance system. Thus they have an increasing impact on the social and economic welfare of people around the world. For this reason, the performance and management of INGOs is vital. However, research on their management is lacking. INGOs possess unique characteristics including complex environments, value-based missions and no financial bottom line. Therefore, management practices, like internal communication, that are generally developed for for-profit organisations need to be evaluated for suitability within the INGO context. Strategic internal communication has been identified as driving organisational performance. Internal communication can be defined as strategic when its purpose is to align internal stakeholders with the organisation’s strategic intent. By facilitating strategic alignment, internal communication can play a critical role in organisational performance. Research on strategic internal communication is limited and virtually non-existent when considered within the INGO context. However, by considering communication management theory, strategic management theory and NGO management theory, it is possible to develop theoretical propositions on the strategic functioning of internal communication in INGOs. In particular, the theory suggests that a postmodern approach to strategic management and strategic internal communication can assist INGOs in addressing many of the challenges they face. This study explores the strategic functioning of internal communication in INGOs through exploratory, qualitative case studies. The evidence shows that internal communication in INGOs does not generally function strategically. However, the function is recognised as having potential to improve the performance of these organisations. In particular, there is support for the suitability of a postmodern approach to strategic internal communication in INGOs. / Dissertation (MPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Communication Management / MPhil / Unrestricted

The influence of Covid-19 on Environmental Non-Governmental Organizations operations

Widing, Elsa, Ahmed, Ruqiyo January 2021 (has links)
This thesis aims to address the research gap in the ENGO literature of how the present Covid-19 pandemic has influenced ENGOs operations. Further, it seeks to explore whether these changes are experienced as an opportunity or a challenge. Additionally, the thesis explores what lessons have emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic, in relation to ENGOs operations. A qualitative case study methodology is chosen. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and secondary sources. The findings present how ENGOs operations have been influenced, which mainly includes the shift of activities from physical to virtual platforms. Moreover, the different opportunities and challenges are discussed. The findings indicate that virtual interactions are not always equivalent to physical. Finally, the lessons: striving for agreen recovery, opportunities of virtual work, the importance of resilience and the link between health of the people and the health of the ecosystems are discussed.

Zlatý kruh fundraisingu / Golden Circle of Fundraising

Freimann, Petr January 2015 (has links)
Fundraising is one of the most critical disciplines regarding the nongovernmental organization's market nowadays. Those who will master it are going to win the competition for the sustainability and freedom through the partnerships with the (major) donors. This thesis defines core of this process, it means the relationship between the NGO and it's fundraiser, and subsequently, between the fundraiser and any potential donor. Moreover, we are going to talk about the behavioral economy and couple of ways how we can use it in terms of Fundraising. Then the last part describes a bit from the Guerrilla marketing cuisine, as we can't do anything properly since we don't have any publicity about it.

Rozsah vládnutí v řešení HIV/AIDS problému v Etiopii / The Magnitude of Governance in Addressing HIV/AIDS Problems in Ethiopia

Balcha, Daniel Messele January 2015 (has links)
This case study seeks to understand the scope of governance in addressing HIV/AIDS issues in Ethiopia by making use of HIV/AIDS partnership forums that exist in the country. All individuals representing the government sector, the NGO sector, the for profit sector and HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office (HAPCO) both at the national level and in the three regions namely Oromia Region, Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region (SNNPR) and Addis Ababa have been interviewed. Additional data were gathered using a PARTNER tool survey and also relevant documents have been analyzed. The social capital and governance theories create a framework where actors enjoy partnerships and use the benefits in both policy making and implementation. With the help of a problem tree and thematic analysis the study describes the causal effect relationship of the factors affecting partnerships and their ultimate consequence in maximizing social capital and governance. Accordingly, the thesis identifies the specific effects of the 2009 law on partnership endeavors in particular and HIV/AIDS policy implementation in general. Moreover, the study points out the existence of insufficient partnership in both decision making and policy implementation.

Knowledge Sharing in Cross-Cultural Virtual Teams of an NGO : Exploring the motivation for knowledge sharing of individuals

Byström, Hanna, Jäger, Marina January 2021 (has links)
Purpose – This master thesis aims to investigate knowledge sharing within two selected cross-cultural virtual teams of a non-governmental organization. The particular focus of this study is on the motivation for knowledge sharing of the individual team members. Based on the findings, the study provides implications for the development of an organizational knowledge management strategy.Design/Methodology/Approach – The qualitative research approach of this study was based on the conceptual framework of this thesis. Said framework was particularly influ-enced by Swift et al.’s (2010) model on goal orientations and the motivation to share knowledge. After eight semi-structured interviews with participants from the organization, Template Analysis was applied for the data analysis.Findings – It was possible to categorize the participants in learning-prove, learning-avoid and performance-prove goal orientations which showed that the motivation stemmed from both learning and demonstrating competence. Furthermore, contributing was a motivating factor in both goal orientations. In the learning goal orientation, it was demonstrated by wanting to contribute to a better life for youth and children and the performance goal orien-tation focused on contributing to a successful organization. The factors which affected the behaviour towards knowledge sharing were relational and cognitive ones. Structural factors did not have an effect.Practical Implications – The practical contribution of this study was the development of managerial implications for the NGO’s HR department. Based on the identified findings, these implications are to be used for the development of a knowledge management strategy within the organization, as it is currently lacking. These implications focus mainly on infra-structural issues as well as on the promotion of organizational culture.Originality/Value – The value of this study is the focus on cross-cultural virtual teams of an NGO, an area lacking research regarding the motivation of individuals to share knowledge. The authors put a particular focus on team members from Northern and Eastern Europe as well as Africa.
