Exploring experiences of homeless young women at a shelter in Cape Town

Mphigalale, Phophi January 2021 (has links)
Magister Artium (Psychology) - MA(Psych) / Homelessness in South Africa is an ever growing problem and it is difficult to determine the exact number of homeless people due to the fact that they live in different areas, such as under bridges, parks, abandoned buildings and vehicles and at shelters. The problem is growing every year nonetheless, there is still no solution. The number of women who are becoming homeless has also been increasing dramatically. There are many contributory factors that have been identified resulting in homelessness among young women, including domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, poverty amongst others. Homeless women are more vulnerable than other groups, young women especially.

Preevangelizační a evangelizační rozměr projektu Noc kostelů / Preevangelizational and evangelizational aspect of the project Night of Churches

Šatánková, Radana January 2015 (has links)
The thesis investigates the Night of Churches schedules in selected parishes of the Prague Archdiocese in years 2011-2013. It also deals with the principles, procedures and methods of evangelization. The terms related to the above mentioned are defined. Additionally, part of the thesis aims to introduce the objectives and developments of the Night of Churches project not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad. The practical part of the work classifies three consecutive years of the event according to their characteristics and the outcome is subsequently compared and analysed with regard to the challenges that arise in front of the Church during pre-evangelization and evangelization. Keywords Night of Churches, church, preevangelization, evangelization

Weight, Corticosterone and Glucose: Changes With Time of Day After Food Deprivation

Sommerville, Sheri, Perez, Vernon J., Elias, Jeffrey W., Smith, Constance J. 01 January 1988 (has links)
The effects of constant food deprivation, terminated at different times of day were examined with respect to percent body weight loss (%BWL), plasma corticosterone (PC) and plasma glucose (PG). A 19-hour food deprivation paradigm schedule staggered around varying times of the day-night cycle was used. Patterns of %BWL related to nocturnal lipogenesis and diurnal lipolysis showed the greatest loss (10%) occurring at 0700 hr, while in evening hours, there was an increasing pattern of weight loss, with the greatest amount (7%) occurring at 2200 hr. A pattern suggestive of neuroregulatory cycles of glucocorticoid release was evident for PC levels; maximum levels for PC (23.2 μg%) were reported at 0700 hr and at 1900 hr (16.6 μg%). Similar patterns were also noted in PG levels, with respective maximum levels of 138.0 mg% and 125.8 mg% occurring at 0700 hr and 1900 hr. These results indicate that the time of day that a deprivation schedule is initiated and terminated is an important consideration due to the impact of circadian photoperiodism. Time of day should be an essential consideration when utilizing deprivation paradigms.

A comparison of circadian rhythms in day and night shift workers

Blood, Mary Lee 01 January 1990 (has links)
The present study examined whether and to what extent physiological rhythms of long-term . night workers become adapted to their unconventionally scheduled hours of work and sleep and how the degree of adaptation would be reflected in ratings of sleep quality, mood, anxiety, energy and satisfaction.

WORK STRESS IN THE CONTEXT OF SHIFTWORK: A LONGITUDINAL INVESTIGATION

Skowronski, Mark 11 1900 (has links)
Although prior research has documented the harmful effects of shiftwork on health and well-being, the relationship between shiftwork and other workplace stressors remains unclear. The current study addresses this gap by using longitudinal data from three cycles of the National Population Health Survey to explore 1) the direct effects of shiftwork and JDCSM variables (job demands, job control, social support, and mastery) on health and well-being, 2) whether shiftwork moderates the effects of JDCSM variables, and 3) whether the effects of shiftwork are mediated by these variables. In addition, “reverse” causal relationships between four measures of strain and workplace stressors are investigated. The results suggest that shiftwork is associated with a reduction in job satisfaction over two cycles. However, there was no evidence of a relationship between shiftwork and changes in chronic health conditions, psychological distress, or health-related quality of life. Consistent with the JDCSM model, increased job demands predicted more distress and less job satisfaction, while greater mastery predicted less distress and more job satisfaction. In addition, job control and social support predicted improved health-related quality of life. The associations were more consistent with the thesis’s predictions across two cycles than across three. There was only weak support for the hypotheses that shiftwork moderates the effects of JDCSM variables. However, there was evidence that changes in job control and social support mediate the effects of shiftwork on job satisfaction. There was also support for reverse causal effects between various outcomes and workplace stressors. However, the prediction that shiftwork moderates these reverse effects received only weak and inconsistent support. Exploratory analyses found specific JDCSM and strain variables to predict an individual’s continuation in shiftwork over time. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
