Non-normative eating behavior and psychopathology in prebariatric patients with binge-eating disorder and night eating syndrome

Baldofski, Sabrina, Tigges, Wolfgang, Herbig, Beate, Jurowich, Christian, Kaiser, Stefan, Stroh, Christine, de Zwaan, Martina, Dietrich, Arne, Rudolph, Almut, Hilbert, Anja January 2014 (has links)
Background: Binge-eating disorder (BED) as a distinct eating disorder category and night eating syndrome (NES) as a form of Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders were recently included in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Objectives: This study sought to investigate the prevalence of BED and NES and associations with various forms of non-normative eating behavior and psychopathology in prebariatric patients. Setting: Within a consecutive multicenter registry study, patients in six bariatric surgery centers in Germany were recruited. Methods: Overall, 233 prebariatric patients were assessed using the Eating Disorder Examination and self-report questionnaires. Assessment was unrelated to clinical procedures. Results: Diagnostic criteria for full-syndrome BED and NES were currently met by 4.3% and 8.2% of prebariatric patients, respectively. In addition, 8.6% and 6.9% of patients met subsyndromal BED and NES criteria, respectively. Comorbid BED and NES diagnoses were present in 3.9% of patients. In comparison to patients without any eating disorder symptoms, patients with BED and NES reported greater emotional eating, eating in the absence of hunger, and more symptoms of food addiction. Moreover, differences between patients with BED and NES emerged with more objective binge eating episodes and higher levels of eating concern, weight concern, and global eating disorder psychopathology in patients with BED. Conclusions: BED and NES were shown to be prevalent among prebariatric patients, with some degree of overlap between diagnoses. Associations with non-normative eating behavior and psychopathology point to their clinical significance and discriminant validity.

Mediální reprezentace celebrit ve formátu late-night talk show / Media Representation of Celebrities in Late-night Talk Show Format

Cerna, Arina January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the media representation of celebrities, as it is designed within the framework of the adopted American television format of the late-night talk show. In the first part of the thesis, attention is focused on problems of understanding of the phenomenon of celebrities by various authors, as well as on the development of the late-night talk show itself and its characteristic features. The theoretical starting point is the theory of representation (Hall), three levels of representation (Trampota) and social construction of reality (Berger, Luckmann). The method of critical discourse analysis is chosen for the research and the four principles for the analysis are described: commoditization, infotainment, personalization, congeniality. The practical part presents an analysis of the typical representation of celebrities due to the principles mentioned above in selected talk shows which were broadcast in English and Czech languages in 2015-2016, namely American The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Czech Jan Kraus Show. Keywords: Celebrity, Late-night Talk Show, Media Representation, Personalization, Congeniality, Infotainment, Commoditization

Noční chlazení budov v podmínkách České Republiky / Night Cooling in Condition of Czech Republic

Šíma, Jiří January 2016 (has links)
The PhD thesis deals with the theoretical evaluation of the potential use of night cooling techniques in condition of the Czech Republic. Mainly aims to evaluate the potential of night cooling, which uses the physical phenomenon of radiation against the night sky. This technique is widely used mainly in the dry and hot regions where there are the most suitable climatic conditions for this cooling method. The work is based on the current state of knowledge in the area of passive and low-energy cooling systems. These knowledges are applied to the conditions of Czech Republic and by using simulations of the energy, behaviour of the buildings explores the benefits in terms of improving of the internal microclimate and from the perspective of economy operation of conventional cooling equipment. In order to establish the benefits of night cooling on the operation of the building in the dynamically changing conditions, the modular simulation program TRNSYS was used, which is suitable for the analysis of energy systems of buildings and their behaviour. The results of simulation results were converted to thermal comfort parameters of the PMV and the PPD.

Natt-till-natt-variation av andningshändelser vid nattlig andningsregistrering / Night-to-night-variability of respiratory events in polygraph testing

Bitar, Tala January 2023 (has links)
All insamlad data analyserades manuellt i programmet NoxTurnal. / Sleep apnea is characterized by short pauses in breathing that occur during sleep and result in disrupted sleep. The severity of sleep apnea can be indicated by an index called the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), where the sum of all breathing pauses is divided by the total sleep time. Typically, sleep monitoring occurs for only one night, but in this study, monitoring will take place over two nights. The purpose of the study is to investigate the difference in AHI value and therefore the difference in the diagnosed severity of sleep apnea between the two monitoring occasions. The study consisted of 25 patients, of whom 14 were men and 11 were women, referred for sleep apnea evaluation at the Physiology Clinic at Västmanland Hospital in Västerås. Sleep was recorded at home using the ambulatory sleep registration device NOX T3s. All data was manually analyzed using the NoxTurnal software program. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test with a significance level of 0,05 was used to determine if there was a significant difference. There was no statistically significant difference in AHI between the first and second recordings. On an individual level, minor differences were observed. For 3 out of 25 patients, the differences between the registrations were significant enough to potentially change the clinical management.

[en] BATS AND POLICEMEN: NIGHT WATCH AND URBAN SURVEILLANCE IN RIO DE JANEIRO (1885-1912) / [pt] MORCEGOS E POLICIAIS: GUARDA NOTURNA E VIGILÂNCIA URBANA NO RIO DE JANEIRO (1885-1912)

PEDRO GUIMARAES MARQUES 03 March 2020 (has links)
[en] This dissertation explores the development process of night surveillance service in Rio de Janeiro between 1885 and 1912. During that time, marked by the transition from the Empire to the Republic, the nightlife of the city suffered from mutations due to its expansion and the increasing occupation of the urban space. The patrolling police service of the night watches, paid by neighbors and merchants, which spread throughout the Atlantic world with different names since the XVIII century, was studied as an integral part in the development of modern police forces in South American and European countries. In dialog with the historiography that studies them, this dissertation aims to understand the place of the carioca night watch in the process that took place in Rio, from the analysis of police archives, press and literature. Far from being analyzed as conflicting to the process of building the state monopoly of public security forces, this analysis is intended to comprehend the night watch as a constituent part of this phenomenon in the republican period, of its ambiguities and disputes around the daily construction of authority.

Restoring the night

Cieszykowski, Jeannette Marie January 1900 (has links)
Master of Landscape Architecture / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Mary Catherine (Katie) Kingery-Page / Restorative landscapes, healing gardens, and therapeutic gardens can improve mental and physical health. They relieve stress, slow us down and make us appreciate the present moment (Kaplan 1995). Research confirms these benefits: “A restorative environment provides measurable physical and/or psychological benefit to human health” (Krinke 2005, 107). Unfortunately, few restorative landscapes are designed for night time use, though stress and the need for healing occur at all hours of the day and night. To that end, the purpose of this research is to create a set of lighting design strategies that will enable designers to create restorative landscapes for nighttime use and demonstrate how they can be applied. A literature review synthesizing the information on healing garden types, outdoor lighting techniques, and their relationship to Attention Restoration Theory, identified four main components required for a space to be considered restorative. Two precedent studies allowed the author to explore the components of Attention Restoration Theory and healing garden types. The lighting principles that afford these four components and healing garden types that are best suited for an urban public space were layered in a final design to create a restorative urban space that is functional at night. The set of design strategies created with the support of this research was applied to Occidental Square, a public park in Seattle, Washington. The applied design strategies are represented and demonstrated through the site design. With these tools in hand, designers can create spaces for those in need of rejuvenation, restoration, and tranquility not only during the day, but also at night.

Playing the Fool: Feste and Twelfth Night

Robinson, Brooklyn D 01 January 2016 (has links)
Twelfth Night does not end with the acceptance and consummation of these “alternative couples.” Instead, the reveal of the twins has a clarifying effect and the characters are returned to the partner who is considered socially acceptable. The final relationships are heterosexual matches that do not stray from class or any other societal confines. Indeed, the story serves to reinforce common standards equating alternative love with madness and proper love with lucidity. Standing outside of the couplings are only bachelor men: Antonio, Sir Andrew, Feste and Orsino’s pages. In effect, these men are desexualized without romantic counterparts. While they are deemed outcasts in Illyria, one character in particular stands to gain from this seeming lack of sexuality and outsider status: the clown, Feste. Gender and power find clarification through the character of Feste because he is afforded all of the privileges of a male in a patriarchal society and in order to analyze him, his positionality within the function and structure of the story must be acknowledged. Usually the character of Viola holds this position in scholarship, but the possibility of Feste played by a female actor introduces similar themes of cross-gender disguise while decoding the heteronormative standards reinforced by the conclusion of the play.

The Wisdom in Folly: An Examination of William Shakespeare's Fools in Twelfth Night and King Lear

Brudevold, Siri M 01 January 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the complexities to be found in the characters of Lear's Fool from King Lear and Feste from Twelfth Night. It begins with an investigation of the history behind the taxonomy of fools that William Shakespeare created in his works. The rest of the thesis is devoted to examining the many facets of the two aforementioned fools, with the goal of discovering just how important and influential they are to their respective plots and to the world of literature. Finally, there is a brief coda that explores the other striking similarities that the two plays have in common.
