Illuminating the path of darkness : social and sacred power of artificial light in Pharaonic Period Egypt

Strong, Meghan January 2018 (has links)
Light is seldom addressed in archaeological research, despite the fact that, at least in ancient Egypt, it would have impacted upon all aspects of life. When discussing light in Egyptology, the vast majority of scholarly attention is placed on the sun, the primary source of illumination. In comparison, artificial light receives very little attention, primarily due to a lack of archaeological evidence for lighting equipment prior to the 7th century BC. However, 19th and 20th century lychnological studies have exaggerated this point by placing an overwhelming emphasis on decorated lamps from the Greco-Roman Period. In an attempt to move beyond these antiquarian roots, recent scholarship has turned towards examining the role that light, both natural and artificial, played in aspects of ancient societies’ architecture, ideology and religion. The extensive body of archaeological, textual and iconographic evidence that remains from ancient Egypt is well suited to this type of study and forms three core data sets in this thesis. Combining a materials-based examination of artificial light with a contextualized, theoretical analysis contributes to a richer understanding of ancient Egyptian culture from the 3rd to 1st millennium BC. The first three chapters of this study establish a typology of known artificial lighting equipment, as well as a lexicon of lighting terminology. A comparison of the archaeological and textual evidence allows for a discussion on the consumption of lighting in ancient Egypt and its impact on social and economic spheres. From this material it becomes apparent that artificial light was a luxury and this corresponds to its inclusion in religious texts and iconography, as well as the presence of lighting implements in tombs of the wealthy elite. The second half of the thesis examines the ritual application of artificial light, incorporating iconographic and textual evidence, consideration of ritual space and timing, and experimental archaeology. This interdisciplinary approach allows for a discussion of the sensory experience of artificial lighting and its perceived potency in ancient Egypt. It also demonstrates the contribution that Egyptology can make to lychnological and sensory studies of the ancient Near East and Mediterranean by examining the impact of light on phenomenology and aesthetics.

O duplo em Dead of Night

Faria, Walterson de January 2013 (has links)
This work approaches the theme of the double in Dead of Night, as well as the double finds its resonance in other areas, such as literature. The study seeks to verify and identify how the theme of the double appears in the film. Besides the analysis of the film, will be addressed trajectory the director Alberto Cavalcanti, who started his career in French cinema, extending across England and Brazil. The film is the period in which the director worked in England and it was produced in 1945. The work begins with a brief history of the life of Alberto Cavalcanti and his career in the cinema. Then we did a search on the topic double, emphasizing three major authors: Clement Rosset, Otto Rank and Nicole Bravo. The analysis is based on an overview of the film followed by the analysis of five episodes that compose: The Hearse Driver, The Christmas Party, The Haunted Mirror, The Golfing Story and The Ventriloquist's Dummy. The conclusion points to possible readings of this film, that these possibilities are related to the double. / Submitted by Jovina Laurentino Raimundo (jovina.raimundo@unisul.br) on 2017-10-23T16:58:40Z No. of bitstreams: 1 107697_Walterson.pdf: 1137232 bytes, checksum: 3f0b21a30de98c271b9d5001e01dba9f (MD5) / Approved for entry into archive by Fabiane dos Santos (fabiane.santos3@unisul.br) on 2017-10-23T16:59:01Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 107697_Walterson.pdf: 1137232 bytes, checksum: 3f0b21a30de98c271b9d5001e01dba9f (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2017-10-23T16:59:01Z (GMT). Rehder, Juarez Garzon. January 2006 (has links)
Abstract: The purpose of this research is to identify and verify how the integration and complementation of night worker students' previous educational knowledge takes place in a Mathematics Licensure course. The methodology used has a qualitative research approach, with the use of questionnaires to gather data, and semi-structured interviews to get to know the school trajectory of the students and their view of the future profession, as well as the dilemmas and difficulties they have gone through, taking into consideration that most of these students come from public schools and represent a major group in private college licensure courses. The work also tries to verify which kind of knowledge was present in their previous education, and the ways it relates to their identity formation process and professional development. The data analysis showed that the students have previous deficiencies of mathematical contents, and that they have difficulty and insecurity related to didactical and curricular knowledge due to conciliation between study and work. The data also reveal positive and coherent images concerning the future profession which can have influence over the professional development. A need of reflection by the responsible governmental organs was also identified, so that new measures in this area of initial formation can be implemented. / Mestre

The main goals of this work were: evaluate the individuals? characteristics of the sleep-wake cycle compare the variation in weight, in the period of two years, among individuals working in the day-shift and in the night-shift; investigate the existence of any relationship between the working time in the night-shift and change in weight and BMI as well as investigate any relationship between change in weight and BMI and the variables of the sleep-wake cycle which in this study are taken as latency, quality of sleep in the night, sleep duration and napping. This research counted on a number of participants of (n=76) people, (n=50 of the night-shift and n=26 of the day-shift), from several distinct professions: nurses, nursing technician and nurses aides that worked in the Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Estadual de Campinas. The average age of the group was 42 years. The working time of the night-shift was from 19h00min to 07h00min of the following day, and the working time of the day-shift was from 07h00min to 13h00min or from 13h00min to 19h00min. The instrumentation used to collect the date was: the diary of sleep (which was filled in with data for 30 consecutive days); questionnaire on personal information related to life style; a balance to measure weight and height to get data for BMI calculation, and the BRAY (1998) table to classify the BMI. The data related to weight were collected in two distinct points in time; the first instant is represented by weight-1, height-1 and BMI-1 of the records from Occupational Health and Safety Division at UNICAMP, respective to the Labor Health control of the period of 2003. The second instant, in 2005, is represented by weight-2, height-2 and BMI-2. The results of the analysis of the night- shift group and day-shift group sleep patterns lead to data statistically significative (Mann-Whitney test) for the latency of sleep (p=<0,001), wake up time (p=<0,001), night sleep duration (p=0,002), night sleep quality (p=0,009), and occurrence of napping (p=0,001). It was found through the test of correlation of Spearman that there was a statistically significant difference (r=-0,296; p=0,0366), given that the difference in weight and the IMC decrease as it increases the frequency of physical activity. From the comparison among the results of the weight increase associated with time of work in the night-shift, it was noticed that there was not significant difference by means of the test of Mann-Whitney (p=0,302), however, the average time of work of the groups with weight reduction and with weight increase showed differences: (11,18 years and 13,87 years respectively). It was noticed that the individuals from the group of night-shift lead to average IMC higher than the ones from the group of day-shift with statistically significant differences (test of Mann-Whitney). However, it was not identified any reason to support the statement that the altered sleep was present and that influenced the weight increase in the group of night-shift / Doutorado / Enfermagem e Trabalho / Doutor em Enfermagem

Training Deficiencies in Airport Surface Operations at Night

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: There are significantly higher rates of pilot error events during surface operations at night than during the day. Events include incidents, accidents, wrong surface takeoffs and landings, hitting objects, turning on the wrong taxiway, departing the runway surface, among others. There is evidence to suggest that these events are linked to situational awareness. Improvements to situational awareness can be accomplished through training to instruct pilots to increase attention outside of the cockpit while taxiing at night. However, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) night time requirements are relatively low to obtain a private pilot certification. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of flight training experience on conducting safe and incident-free surface operations at night, collect pilot opinions on night training requirements and resources, and analyze the need for night time on flight reviews. A survey was distributed to general aviation pilots and 239 responses were collected to be analyzed. The responses indicated a higher observed incident rate at night than during the day, however there were no significant effects of night training hours or type of training received (Part 61, Part 141/142, or both) on incident rate. Additionally, higher total night hours improved pilot confidence at night and decreased incident rate. The overall opinions indicated that FAA resources on night flying were effective in providing support, but overall pilots were not in support of or against adding night time requirements to flight reviews and found night training requirements to be somewhat effective. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Aerospace Engineering 2020
