A DiscourseAnalysis of Leadership in Non-Profit Cross-Cultural Organizations in Chiang Mai, Thailand : A Minor Field Study

Arenander, Charlotte January 2014 (has links)
This study is a discourse analysis of leadership among Thai staffworking in non-profit cross-cultural organizations in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The purpose is to study the pervading leadership discourses, how these are affected by the fact that they are working in non-profit cross-cultural organizations, and how the staffexperiencesconflicting discourses in the organization. The material consists of six interviews with Thai staff. The result includeseight leadership discourses, where the two greatest are relational leadership and national culture. Relational leadership includes the importance of relationship between leaders and followers, something that also characterizes the Thai culture. The national culture discourse consists of descriptions of leadership stylesthatdepend onnational culture. Several of the other leadership discourses presented also include similarities with the Thai culture as explained by for example Hofstede (1980) and Ukosakul (2005), while others are descriptions of transformationalleadership, a leadership style said by some to be universal(Den Hartog, House,Hanges, & Ruiz-Quintanilla, 1999). The leadership discourses are affected by the fact that the informants are working in non-profit cross-cultural organizations, causing for example challenges in communication. The informants also describe that they adapt to theculturesof the people they are working with, but also expect leaders to adapt to the local culture and context. Despite differences in national culture, the organizational goals create a common base. The conflicting discourses that are describedhave to do with national cultures, both between different national cultures, but also between culture and personality or religious discourses.

Emtfelt, Maja, Johnsson, Madeleine January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to shed light on various parts of prostitution and human trafficking within Swedish social service and non-profit organizations. In addition, this study can help to draw society’s attention to the phenomenon of prostitution and human trafficking, as well as contribute to further discussion on the subject. A qualitative method through interviews with eight workers within social service and non-profit organizations was used to reach the purpose of this study. The theoretical basis of the study was intersectionality, empowerment and social mobilization. A qualitative content analysis helped to analyze the collected data. The result of the study showed limited awareness about prostitution and human trafficking among social service and non-profit organizations. It also showed that this is a complex phenomenon where there is a need to expand the resources in order to conduct an effective work and provide vulnerable people with the best possible conditions for gaining access to the right support and protection. Furthermore, it shows that awareness needs to be greater about the phenomenon as it occurs in all contexts and groups which means that the support needs to be more adapted for each individual to include everyone. The conclusion of the study shows that prostitution and human trafficking is a complex phenomenon of which there is a lack of knowledge and understanding. It is important that the work against the phenomenon is developed and that awareness about the phenomenon's occurrence is increased.

Value based strategy in elite sports organizations - A Case Study of Luleå Hockey / Värdegrundsbaserad strategi inom elitidrottsföreningar-‐ En fallstudie av Luleå Hockey

Puranen, Niklas January 2014 (has links)
The  purpose  of  this  report  is  to  examine  and  describe  how  an  elite  sports organization uses  implementation  of  values  to  strengthen  the  organizational culture and the strategy.   The author has made a case study of Luleå Hockey, consisting  of   eight  interviews  and   necessary  observations.  The  report  is interview based but books, scientific articles and reports have also been taken into consideration.  Research emphasizes that the ongoing commercializing-‐  and professionalizing processes in non-‐profit  organizations has led to a greater influence of business thinking,  which can  be  noted in  the  case Luleå Hockey who knowingly uses strategy. The theoretical framework of the report, however, proves that strategy needs  the  support  of  a  strong  organizational  culture  in  order  to  be  used effectively. To develop an organizational culture that correlate with strategy, the understanding of how to implement values is important. Luleå   Hockey   uses   strategy   and   realizes   how   shared   values   influence organizational culture, however the procedure where Luleå Hockey implements the   values   into   the   organization   can   still   be   improved.   In   elite   sports organizations a conflict of interests arises when the non-‐profit fundament of the organization  is  put  in  contrast  to  the  profit-‐generating  goals,  shared  values  can therefor be the glue that holds these organizations together.

Narrative as an Organizing Process: Identity and Story in a New Nonprofit

Herrmann, Andrew F. 01 January 2011 (has links)
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore narratives in a new nonprofit arts center. It includes the macro-, meso-, and personal narratives that keep the center organized in the midst of the chaotic everyday activities. It advocates the explanatory force of narrative as an alternative to organizational life cycle theory for understanding organizational startups. Design/methodology/approach – This narrative ethnography involved participant observation, full participation, and narrative interviews over a three-year period. Using grounded theory, narratives were examined to discover how they engendered and maintained order. Findings – This paper contributes to the understanding narratives as a constitutional organizing and sensemaking process, including the narratives of “Do It Yourself,” and economic production, family and home, and personal narratives that constitute community, community boundaries, and identity, adding to our knowledge of organizing. Research limitations/implications – The research examined only one local nonprofit arts center, therefore the findings are specific to this site and the same types of narratives may not necessarily be found in other nonprofits. Originality/value – This paper examines a nonprofit during start-up. It validates support for the examination of organizations through narrative ethnography and narrative interviewing. It purports that narratives constitute social identity, rather than being the evidence of social identity.
