Managed Query Processing within the SAP HANA Database Platform

The SAP HANA database extends the scope of traditional database engines as it supports data models beyond regular tables, e.g. text, graphs or hierarchies. Moreover, SAP HANA also provides developers with a more fine-grained control to define their database application logic, e.g. exposing specific operators which are difficult to express in SQL. Finally, the SAP HANA database implements efficient communication to dedicated client applications using more effective communication mechanisms than available with standard interfaces like JDBC or ODBC. These features of the HANA database are complemented by the extended scripting engine–an application server for server-side JavaScript applications–that is tightly integrated into the query processing and application lifecycle management. As a result, the HANA platform offers more concise models and code for working with the HANA platform and provides superior runtime performance. This paper describes how these specific capabilities of the HANA platform can be consumed and gives a holistic overview of the HANA platform starting from query modeling, to the deployment, and efficient execution. As a distinctive feature, the HANA platform integrates most steps of the application lifecycle, and thus makes sure that all relevant artifacts stay consistent whenever they are modified. The HANA platform also covers transport facilities to deploy and undeploy applications in a complex system landscape.

There are many ways of implementing an application, and the choices of how to cater to the specific needs of a customer are many. Today, one of the major decisions made when developing an application is whether to implement a native or web-based solution. Each of these alternatives comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. The choice between a native application or a web application is highly dependent on the necessity of certain functions. A native application has many valuable functions but lacks features that web applications can provide. A Progressive Web Application (PWA) is a third option that aims to combine the capabilities of both web and native mobile apps. This evaluation focuses specifically on the needs of a booking flow for airlines. In these types of self-service applications, high-quality Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is vital, as the user's experience will dictate each customer's view of and future interaction with the company. This thesis investigates if PWA are capable of achieving the same capabilities as a native application, as well as providing a high-fidelity prototype of a PWA application. This will allow companies to assess if PWA are suitable for this purpose along with what their strengths and weaknesses are. After evaluation, it was concluded that PWA are a viable alternative to native apps in this context, as a prototype was able to emulate the majority of established characteristics of a native app. / Det finns många olika sätt att utveckla en applikation på, hur man anpassar appen till dess användare kan se mycket olika ut från situation till situation. Vid utveckling av olika applikationer för olika företag brukar valet stå mellan nativ och webbapplikationer. Båda dessa har sina unika fördelar och nackdelar och beroende på bransch så kan dessa ha stor påverkan på hur användarna upplever företaget och dess app. Det är därför en essentiell del för företagen att välja den typ av applikation som kommer motsvara användarnas krav. Progressiva Webb Applikationer (PWA) är ett tredje alternativ till de ovan nämnda och ämnar att kombinera fördelarna med båda. Denna evaluering kommer därför titta närmare på alla tre applikations typerna, fördelar och nackdelar och slutligen evaluera om en PWA är ett värdigt alternativ till ett nativt bokningsflöde för flygbolag. I denna kontext är människa-data interaktionen mycket viktig då användarens upplevelse inte bara påverkar dess bild av appen utan även företaget. Denna evaluering kommer därav hjälpa företag inom detta område analysera om en PWA passar deras situation. Samt att tydliggöra dennes fördelar och nackdelar. De områdena som kommer undersökas är åtkomlighet, anslutning, prestanda, funktioner och användarupplevelse. Efter evalueringen, drogs slutsatsen att PWA kan uppnå samma kvalitet som en nativ app inom majoriteten av de undersökta områdena.

Elderly support - android application for fall detection and tracking

Neilsen / The purpose of the project is to develop an Android application that is capable of detecting possible falls for the elderly. With the advancement of wireless communications, the world has become smarter and there has been increase in use of smart phones. Android, being an open source platform has made it simple for every individual to develop their own applications, which in turn can be used on Android devices. Falls among the elderly are a serious concern for both families as well as medical professionals, since falls are considered to be the eighth leading cause of death in the United States. Untreated fall injuries in adults 65 or older can result in serious risks and health complications, since 20% of falls require immediate medical attention and about one-tenth of the falls result in fractures. Thus, as mentioned, fall detection is a critical event requiring quick and accurate response, especially for elderly people living by themselves. This is the motivation behind developing an elderly support, which detects a fall and alerts the caretaker regarding the information. The elderly support is about tracking the person and notifying the caretaker if there is an occurrence. One of the main features of this Android application is that it notifies the caretaker with alert messages which contain all the necessary information. The alert messages contain useful information about the people in danger, such as his/her geo location and also corresponding directions on a map. In occasions of false alerts, the supervised person is given the ability to estimate the value of importance of a possible alert and to stop it before proceeding with further steps. This project is geared towards supporting the elderly. The mobile application is capable of detecting possible falls and through a user-friendly interface that can be used to alert relatives, doctors, and other people who take care of the elderly.

Singing wine glasses

Andresen / One among the many inventions of Benjamin Franklin is the Glass Armonica, a musical instrument whose sound source was a series of resonating glass vessels. However, the Irish musician Richard Pockrich is typically credited as the first to play an instrument composed of glass vessels, called the Glass Harp in 1741, by rubbing his fingers around the rims. In this project “Singing Wine Glasses”, the principle of Franklin’s glass armonica is demonstrated with a wine glass. One hand is used to hold the glass steady at the base. The rim of glass is gently pressed with a moistened finger of the other hand and drawn in a circle around. When the pressure and amount of moisture are just right, the slight friction between the finger and the rim of glass causes vibrations in the sides of the glass. At a particular frequency, called the resonant frequency, the sides of the glass will vibrate most easily. The resonant frequency of wine glasses is typically within the range of human hearing (20-20,000 Hz), so the resulting resonant vibration is heard as a tone. The glass starts to sing when the vibration gets the molecules moving at their natural frequency. The resonant frequency changes with the amount of water filled in the glass. This android application deals with virtual glasses that serve the purpose of wine glasses filled with different amounts of water. Swiping on the glass edges would produce music, as per Franklin’s principle. The users would be free to select the number of glasses they want to play, and the amount of water-level in each glass. This application would also come with an enhanced feature of sustaining a particular note until the finger is released from the glass.

Evaluation of method of placement, timing, and rate of application for anhydrous ammonia in no-till corn production

Master of Science / Department of Agronomy / David B. Mengel / Anhydrous ammonia (AA) is one of the most commonly used nitrogen (N) fertilizer sources for corn (Zea mays L.) in the US. Traditional knife applicators are slow, have high power requirements and create substantial soil disturbance. Thus, there is considerable interest in high speed, shallow placement, and low draft AA applicators like the newly introduced JD 2510 series, particularly for no-till production systems. The objective of this project was to compare a prototype high speed, low draft applicator (JD) with a traditional knife type AA applicator (TRAD) for irrigated and dryland corn production in the Kansas River Valley. Field studies were conducted from 2007 through 2009. Six N rates ranging from 0 – 224 kilograms N per hectare, in 45 kilogram increments, were applied at 3 application timings, Fall (FALL), Preplant (PRE), and Sidedress (SD) with both type applicators. Gaseous AA emissions were collected over a seven to nine day period after each application for both the TRAD and JD applicators for all application timings. The impact of applicator, timing and N rate was also measured on plant stand, earleaf N content, total N uptake, nitrogen use efficiency and grain yield. Statistically higher post application losses of ammonia at high N application rates were seen at all application timings with the JD applicator. However, these N losses were not of agronomic significance, and did not affect grain yield in 2007 or 2008. In 2009, there did appear to be a significant difference between applicators in grain yield, however this was primarily due to a significant yield decrease at the JD SD 224 kilograms N per hectare treatment from high application loss and resulting plant tissue damage. A significant response to N application was seen every year. Optimum N rate varied between years. FALL and PRE treatments had significantly higher grain yield than SD applications in 2008. However, in 2009 there was no significant difference in N application timing.

Rapid prototyping and manufacturing in medical product development

Published Article / RP and recently RM have been key factors in the development of the manufacturing industry in assisting in the development of new products. Fortunately, the application of these technologies has been realised in the medical industry. Surgeons all over the world use physical models created from CT or MRI data using some sort of additive manufacturing. The fabrication of these models has exploded into a popular research area combining engineering, material and medical expertise. Long-term growth in the additive fabrication industry will come from designs that are difficult, time-consuming, costly, or impossible to produce using standard techniques. Growth will occur with advances in current additive processes which are coupled with breakthroughs in new materials. The applications of RP and RM are as diverse as the medical issues that arise. RM of custom design medical prostheses proves to be economically viable solution, not only because it is faster to produce but it gives the designer freedom of creation too. The paper discusses some interesting medical case studies.

The system can accomplish the processing using the embedded application middleware, various data processing modules in database, with the scheduler servers and processing servers. The system can meet many users' demand of huge quantity non-structural flight raw data quickly and efficient processing at the short time, ensure the flight data enhanced management, to keep from copying and distributing the great quantity raw data inefficiently and out-of-management.

Design and Implementation of NFC-based gym mobile app

This report investigates the technical and economic viability of introducing a Near Field Communication (NFC) client system in a gym environment. The system aims to aid the customers with logging their workout, retrieving information regarding exercises as well as enhancing the attendance control for both staff and customers. To identify what information to be presented, the most important quality factors and what functionalities are most desired, an exploratory case study was conducted. The study showed that there is a discrepancy between the desire to log ones workout and actually doing it. Most people want to keep track of how they workout, but despite the wide variety of workout applications on the market, they choose not to use them. The main concern expressed was that the logging needs to be fast and easy, indicating that the existing apps do not fulfill the ease of use desired. The system presented in this report is coupled to the gym where NFC tags pair an exercise to its corresponding logger and information in the application. The ability for the gym to track its customers’ workout habits is a rare feature that provides several economic benefits such as targeted advertisement, better maintenance control and new customer services analyzing their workout. For the system to be effective the customers need to use the system and log their workout, therefore it needs to be supported by the major mobile platforms. To accommodate this a hybrid platform approach using PhoneGap was used. This approach allows for development in one language that translates into native embedded web applications. At the time of writing Apple’s latest models do include the hardware for NFC communication. However, it is not possible to develop a custom NFC application for iPhone yet. By adopting the hybrid approach there is no need to create a whole new app when they do release the rights to do so. In conclusion, the technical viability of the NFC based system comes with the tradeoffs of dealing with the lack of standards of a new technology and being early on the market with a new feature. This calls for some custom solutions, since each platform adopts their own way of NFC implementation, but is manageable. The economic aspects are tied to the use of the system where the ease of use is the key factor for the customers. The end user tests indicate that NFC provides that small advantage over traditional workout applications needed to make logging attractive.

A DEVICE DRIVER ARCHITECTURE FOR TELEMETRY APPLICATIONS

Device requirements included operation on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95, Windows NT 5.0 and Windows 98 platforms. A single device driver was not possible due to the differences between driver requirements on the various operating systems. The Windows Driver Model (WDM) was considered for NT 5.0 and Win98, however, NT 4.0 and Win95 does not support the WDM. To minimize software development and support efforts, it was clear that an architecture compatible to both WDM, NT 4.0 and Windows 95 needed to be developed. The resulting layered device driver architecture provides a common upper interface and uses a register based model to describe the hardware at the lower interface. The common upper interface is compatible with all of the target operating systems and presents a consistent Applications Programming Interface (API) for the telemetry application developer. The lower interface is specific for each platform but contains minimal device specific functionality. A simple register I/O driver is easily implemented using all of the target operating systems. The layered architecture and register based interface to the hardware results in a multiple operating system code set which differs only at the lowest layer.

Development of an EUVE Virtual Environment (EVE) System for Satellite Anomaly Resolution and Science Planning in Operations

The EVE system is being developed as an interactive virtual reality (VR) viewing tool for NASA's Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite. EVE will serve as a predictive tool for forecasting spacecraft constraint violations and will provide a capability for spacecraft problem analysis and resolution in realtime through visualization of the problem components in the spacecraft. EVE will animate, in three-dimensional realtime, the spacecraft dynamics and thermal characteristics of the EUVE spacecraft. EVE will also display the field of view for the science instrument detectors, star trackers, sun sensors, and both the omni and high-gain antennas for NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) and for possible ground station contact. EVE will display other vital spacecraft information to support the routine operations of the EUVE spacecraft. The EVE system will provide three quick-look visualization functions: (1) to model in-orbit data for realtime spacecraft problem analysis and resolution, (2) to playback data for post-pass data analysis, and training exercises, and (3) to simulate data in the science planning process for optimum attitude determination and to predict spacecraft and thermal constraint violations. We present our preliminary design for a telemetry server, providing both realtime and post pass data, that uses standard Unix utilities. We also present possibilities for future integration of the EVE system with other software to automate the science planning and command generation functions of the satellite operations.
