Between Faith and Knowledge: "Theological Knowledge" in Gregory of Rimini and his Fourteenth-Century Context

Witt, Jeffrey Charles January 2012 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Jean-Luc Solère / This dissertation pursues a philosophical analysis of the epistemic claims of the discipline of theology--a intellectual discipline whose unique identity was being crafted in the high and late Middle Ages. In particular, this study focuses on how the theologian can both rely on "faith" and "authority" while also claiming to acquire a kind of knowledge that the simple believer does not have. The prologue to Sentences Commentary of the Augustinian, Gregory of Rimini, is the focal point of the dissertation, since the "prologue" is the typical place for theologians to philosophically reflect on the nature of their discipline. However, Rimini will be considered carefully in light of his fourteenth-century context. The study will look specifically at those thinkers Rimini directly engages with: namely, Aquinas, Duns Scotus, Peter Aureoli, William of Ockham and Adam Wodeham. But, in light of Rimini's status as an Augustinian hermit, the study will also be attentive to the tradition of Augustinian theologians that precede Rimini; most notably, this is Giles of Rome, star pupil of Aquinas and the intellectual father of the Augustinian Order. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2012. / Submitted to: Boston College. Developing a "Theology in the Order of Discovery": The Method and Contribution of James Alison

Edwards, John Paul January 2015 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Brian D. Robinette / This dissertation seeks to develop the theological method operative within James Alison's growing theological corpus, which he describes concisely as a "theology in the order of the discovery." I will argue that the value and contribution of his method lies in the careful and consistent attention that he pays to the ongoing, reciprocal relationship that exists between persons' experiences of receiving faith (that is, experiences of conversion) and persons' attempts to understand the content of that faith through a process of self-reflexive appropriation of it (that is, through engagement in the activity of theological reflection). In the introductory chapter, after defining the key terms of the project, I situate my investigation into Alison's method within the context of several twentieth and twenty-first century Christian theological movements: experiential/transcendental theology, dialectical theology, narrative or postliberal theology, and a theology of proclamation. These comparisons allow for an initial articulation of the characteristics of what I will present increasingly more explicitly throughout the dissertation as Alison's "inductive" theology. Part I of the dissertation, consisting of chapter two, presents the mimetic anthropology of René Girard as the primary intellectual influence on Alison's conception of theology. It considers Girard's gradual development of the terminology that he has employed to express his deepening understanding of the operation of mimetic desire, rivalry, and conversion in order to show that Girard's attempt to develop "a Gospel anthropology" requires a systematic theological perspective to give it greater coherence. With this context in place, Part II proceeds with my study of Alison's theological method. Chapter three develops Alison's implicit understanding of one movement in the reciprocal relationship between the experience of conversion and the activity of theological reflection, namely, the movement from conversion to theological reflection, and it presents theology as a fruit of conversion. The primary aim of the chapter is to show that Alison's view of the New Testament accounts of the resurrection appearances leads him to begin to understand the reciprocal relationship between conversion and theology that has guided his theological performance throughout his career. Chapter four develops Alison's implicit view of the reciprocal movement from theological expression to the potential conversion experiences of others, that is, it presents theology as an occasion for conversion. It draws out Alison's implicit understanding of theology as an act of witness which can provide an occasion for the Spirit of Christ to make the crucified and risen Christ present both to the one giving witness and to those that receive that witness. I conclude in chapter five by demonstrating Alison's inductive theological approach as it is operative in several excerpts from his writings. I then begin to demonstrate the fruitfulness of Alison's inductive method by exploring how this method might contribute to three theological and ministerial questions in need of renewed consideration. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2015. / Submitted to: Boston College. Anthropologia Crucis: A Philosophical Anthropology of the Cross

Gregor, Brian January 2009 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Richard Kearney / What does the word of the cross mean for philosophical anthropology? That is my question in this dissertation, which undertakes a philosophical engagement with a word that is both a scandal and folly for philosophical wisdom. My task is to give a hermeneutical description of what I call the cruciform self, and to examine the significance of the cross for several key themes of philosophical anthropology. Because my focus is thematic, I engage with several interlocutors--most prominently Paul Ricoeur and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, but also Luther, Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Levinas, and Charles Taylor. Given the pronounced theological aspects of this project, a recurring theme is the relation between philosophy and faith, reason and revelation. The word of the cross interrogates anthropology as well as philosophy, and so I present a hermeneutics of the cruciform self as well as a distinctly cruciform philosophy. Chapter 1 outlines the hermeneutical turn in philosophical anthropology, and argues that the self is constituted in being addressed by an external word. Chapter 2 then draws on Luther's theology of the cross to sketch an ontology of justification by faith, in which the self is constituted by eschatological possibility rather than achieved actuality, and stands outside of itself with its identity in another, in promise rather than presence. Chapter 3 interprets sin and evil according to the image of incurvature--i.e., the self curved in on itself, cut off from its true relations to God, others, and itself. Chapter 4 then argues that this incurvature must be broken open by an external word. There I draw on Bonhoeffer's phenomenological christology, which identifies this word as Christ, the Counter-Logos who reverses the intentionality and interrogation of the immanent human logos. The chapters in Part II then use Bonhoeffer's account of the ultimate and the penultimate to show how the word of the cross refigures philosophical thinking about the concreteness and continuity of faith (Ch.5), human capability, agency, and ethical responsibility (Ch.6), reflexivity, self-understanding, and intentionality (Ch.7), and the tension between faith and religion (Ch.8). / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2009. / Submitted to: Boston College. Louvado seja! Marcas de uma religiosidade latinoamericana / Praise! Trademarks of a religiosity latinoamericana

Marcelo, João Rangel 31 October 2016 (has links)
In a history forged by struggles for liberation and against the domination of foreigners and settlers, the Latin American culture is full of a religious sentiment that can be expressed in various forms of mans relationship with the sacred. British churches, participation and community development

Scofield, Joseph January 2011 (has links)
In the British welfare sector, the role of religious groups in offering faith based welfare provision is substantial and addresses a wide variety of needs. Such action is not confined to the Christian faith, since other religious faiths generate welfare initiatives of their own. Nor is faith motivated welfare provision restricted to meeting basic human needs, as it can include efforts to build community relations and also encompasses community development approaches that support citizens to come together to create self-help projects. In fact the latter themes sometimes appear linked in social policy where community development is seen as a way of generating cohesive and cooperative communities, particularly in areas where there are ethnic divides to be bridged (Pearmain and Hatamian 2011: 1-2). This thesis focusses on one aspect of faith involvement in the welfare sector. It investigates whether British churches can adopt a community development approach, and in so doing, produce the positive outcomes that are associated with community participation neighbourhood regeneration. In this chapter I show how that topic has become pertinent to today’s welfare climate and the community development profession. I introduce a number of research questions that must be answered in order to argue that churches can embrace a community development approach, and outline how these questions are addressed in my literature reviews and case studies of churches in the chapters that follow.

A suppressio no direito civil brasileiro / Verwirkung in Brazilian private law.

Neves, Julio Gonzaga Andrade 20 February 2015 (has links)
The study is devoted to the investigation of the suppressio (Verwirkung), a type of abuse of rights based on the violation of the objective good faith, which originated in the German case law. The research throws dogmatic bases regarding the legal nature of suppressio, the requirements for its use, the effects arising therefrom, legal basis and axiological foundation, limits and interactions with similar figures. Further, the research dedicated itself to the analysis of the Brazilian case law on the subject, through comments specific to the precedents in which the controversial points of the discipline could be better analyzed. The use of foreign law is continuous throughout the text, mainly due to the European origin of suppressio, but the methodology is not one of comparative law. The goal is to understand and create a typically national profile for suppressio with high operability that ensures legal certainty in its management.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Luiz Gustavo Santos Teixeira.pdf: 950931 bytes, checksum: 48869897ab2215396d53548c65f37fa0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-12-08 / After several centuries, with a vision of sacrifice, revelation, relationship with God, faith, liturgy and practice, and with the renewal of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), the Church was able to review the way of expressing the faith being more adapted to the world. This way, the Church tries to recover the vision of God as love and mercy, taking as reference Jesus Christ, who cares about the human being. Therefore, there is a necessity to make the faithful deepen their faith and put into practice in their daily life. However, nowadays, we can see some resistance; gospel values are "interpreted" in the manner of each one; suffering and, sacrifice gain a sense of "redeemer" like the Old Testament rather than the sense of the New Testament, the donation and delivery the life for the people .Therefore, in the light of the Paschal Mystery and a brief analysis of some Eucharistic prayers and anaphora, this work aims to show the positive dimension of the sacrifice present in the Eucharist, allowing, thus, an authentic experience of Jesus Christ and how to put into practice such experience, with responsibility and commitment, from the base of God's love, the agape, because unfortunately, nowadays, still values so much the negative dimension of this following due a liquid society that has developed over the years / Após vários séculos com uma visão de sacrifício, revelação, relação com Deus, fé, liturgia e práxis, com a renovação do Concílio Vaticano II (1962-1965), a Igreja conseguiu rever sua maneira de expressar a fé mais adaptada ao mundo.
