How did the international year of biodiversity promote action at the national level?Larsen, Julie Esther 13 February 2013 (has links)
One of the challenges faced by the United Nations in addressing global environmental issues is to find politically agreeable strategies that promote action at the national level. One approach is to designate observances, such as the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity (IYB). While the UN has used these international designations for several years, the results achieved from them are rarely examined, particularly at the national level. This research asked: How has the International Year of Biodiversity been used to initiate actions that protect biodiversity in Canada? It developed a case study, based on data collected from a documentation review, semi-structured interviews, and collaborative dialogues designed to further explore preliminary findings. Data were analysed qualitatively. Results converged around six findings, primarily around the Year's use as a communications tool. Ten recommendations aim to guide future uses of international designations in Canada as a tool to address global environmental issues.

Breaking maxims in conversation : A comparative study of how scriptwriters break maxims in Desperate Housewives and That 70’s ShowDornerus, Emma January 2006 (has links)
<p>When we converse we constantly fail to observe the rules of conversation in order to simplify and make dialogues more effective. The scriptwriters who work with TV shows use non-observances of maxims in order to evoke different feelings from their viewers. The aim of this paper was to investigate how frequently non-observances of maxims occurred in the TV shows Desperate Housewives and That 70’s Show. I examined where and why they were used as well as how often flouting was used compared to violations. The base of the study was a drama and a comedy show.</p><p>Research has shown that the maxim of relevance is most frequently used to create different comical or dramatic situations. The scriptwriters have their characters ignore what is relevant to the situations in order to make them come off as flustered, odd and stupid in humorous situations and as mysterious, cowardly, respectful or bold in dramatic situations. Also research shows that flouting occurs more frequently than violations when it comes to breaking maxims. Violations occur most often with the maxim of quality when the characters lie to mislead in order to direct blame away from him/herself. In Conclusion, this investigation has shown that non-observances of maxims are important for scriptwriters in order to create humorous and dramatic situations in verbal interaction.</p>

Promoting learners’ right to freedom of religious expression in public schoolsMaganyane, Tumelo Arnols January 2021 (has links)
The dispute over the place, accommodation and tolerance of religion and religious expression in South African public schools, as well as globally, has been vehement. This is, to some extent, because public schools reflect the multicultural and religious societies in which they are found. In addition to their diverse backgrounds, public schools in South Africa and elsewhere are dominated by Christianity, with most people claiming allegiance to it and, sometimes, discriminating against the other minority religions. This has led to governments developing a plethora of legislation, policies and regulations to redress the dominance, unequal treatment and discrimination of the dominant religion. This study was undertaken to answer the question: “How do public schools promote the learners’ right to freedom of religious expression?”
This interpretive multisite case study explored the experiences of the SGB chairpersons, principals, Life Orientation educators and learners at three public secondary schools in the Bohlabela District of the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. The research used interviews, document analysis and observations to elicit the participants’ views and understandings of how their various schools’ religious observance policies promoted the learners’ right to freedom of religious expression. The findings revealed that most schools have not changed the way they conduct religious observances since the promulgation of the National Policy on Religion and Education of 2003. Moreover, learners still experience religious intolerance and religious discrimination because schools promote single-faith religious observances. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria 2021. / pt2021 / Education Management and Policy Studies / MEd / Unrestricted

Is Sherlock Really that Observant? : A qualitative study of the relation between non-observances of observational maxims and characterization in the TV-series Sherlock / Är Sherlock verkligen så observant? : En kvalitativ studie av sambandet mellan brott av konversationsmaximer och karaktärisering i TV-serien SherlockHallén, Alexsandra January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate how often a character of a TV-series non-observed the conversational maxims, and if non-observances can be used for characterization in TV-series. The aim of this study was also to examine how much conversations and generally unknown conversational rules can affect people and their entire perception of others. The study focused on the main character of the TV-series Sherlock and investigated how often Sherlock breaks the conversational maxims, in what ways he does so, and how 20 respondents would describe Sherlock based on his conversational input. The most frequent non-observance turned out to be flouts and the most commonly non-observed maxim was the maxim of relation. According to the survey that the respondents answered, there seems to be a correlation between Sherlock’s conversational input and how they would describe him. In general, the respondents applied more negative personality traits to Sherlock when describing him based on excerpts where he did not observe the conversational maxims, whereas they described Sherlock in a more positive manner when he followed the conversational maxims.

School principals mediating change : the case of religion in educationNtho-Ntho, Albertina Maitumeleng January 2013 (has links)
It has been the desire of the ANC government ever since it came to power in 1994 to develop
a unity of purpose and spirit that cherishes and celebrates the diverse nature of the South
African population in terms of culture, language and religion and to transform existing
inequalities that are deep-rooted in South African educational history and religion in
particular. In order to satisfy this desire, a whole plethora of legislation and policies was
developed. Amongst the developments entailed in these laws and policies were religious
rights and freedoms guaranteed to all South Africans as well as the establishment of
democratic structures vested with powers to govern schools while school principals manage
them. In terms of education legislation, one of the functions of the governing body of a
school is to develop and adopt a school policy on religion (as per the study) which is
accordingly implemented by the school principal. It is in the policy implementation stage that
the school principal is expected to play a mediating role and resolve possible conflicts
erupting due to different religious interestThis study is based on the assumption that the management and leadership training they
received and the position they hold as school managers and leaders, enabled participating
school principals to mediate the implementation of new religion policies. The research
question driving this study was “How do school principals deal with implementation of the
National Policy on Religion and Education in schools?” Informed by this question the focus
of the study was to explore “how principals describe and experience their mediating role in
implementing the religion policy within an existing religious context in schools”. Following a
qualitative research approach a phenomenological research design was employed in order to
understand and describe the meaning of the lived, felt and narrated experiences of school
principals. Data were collected by means of narrative interviews where twelve school
principals pursuing postgraduate studies with the University of Pretoria and who have been in
education for at least ten years, told their religion in education stories. These stories were
subsequently transcribed, analysed and interpreted to determine the impact of principals’ past
religious experiences and their management training on their implementation of religion
policies at their schools. This study found that in dealing with the National Policy on Religion and Policy (2003)
implementation in schools, participating principals ignore the policy in preference of
maintaining the status quo. When faced with conflicts related to religious interests, they
partially sub-contracted into the policy. They did not seem to consider transformative
mediation as a possible leadership strategy for conflict resolution in the existing religious
context of schools. The study also found that amongst these principals, there were those who
displayed a confident attitude, values of openness, generosity and integrity and had used their
past religious experiences to transform the quality of conflict interaction in schools. My
recommendation in this regard would therefore be threefold. One, Higher Education
Institutions should provide appropriate training by introducing suitable courses that will yield
adequate knowledge, skills and opportunities for professional attitude, value attainment and
determination for continuous learning and development to principals as key change agents.
Two, there is a need for these organizations to re-evaluate and re-organise existing courses
for better recognition of transformative mediation as a leadership strategy to conflict
resolution in schools. The provincial departments of education need to provide appropriate
training for prospective principals as part of professional development programmes to
address the essential needs pertaining to policy implementation that could create conflict in
schools. Training in mediation of conflict would therefore be essential. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2013 / Education Management and Policy Studies / unrestricted

L’étude est menée selon trois axes : analyse codicologique ; philologie des traces d’usage introduites au cours des âges ; approche musicologique d’un échantillon d’Offices liturgiques (Office de la Dédicace et Office votif du Sacré-Coeur) / Between 2008 & 2011, a general inventory of the liturgical books of 51 Cistercian communities in Francophone Europe allowed the highlighting of one fund of several 10th of choir graduals and antiphonaries, both manuscripts & printed, from the Renaissance period to the beginning of the XXth century. These works constitute the main body of this thesis aimed to examine the content relating to the history of the Cistercian Order, but also the general evolution of ecclesiastical chant. Periodization of this work is defined according to the following terminals: the terminus a quo (1521) is the first impression of a Cistercian choir book and terminus ad quem (1903) is the publication of the last book of this size in this specific Order. The study is conducted along three axes: codicological analysis; philology traces of use introduced in these books over the ages; musicological approach of a sample of specific liturgical Offices (Office of the Dedication and votive Office of the Sacred-Heart)
