Våltäktsmyter i förändring: Bilder av våldtäktsoffer i nyhetsmediaJohansson, Moa, Keller, Sanna January 2018 (has links)
This study is a qualitative content analysis about sexual violence in news media. The study aims to illustrate how news media construct portrayals of women and men that have been victims of, what the selected newspapers define as rape. The study also intended to analyse how the term rape is used in the selected articles. The empirical data consist of 21 articles, selected from four Swedish newspapers: Aftonbladet, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. Three theore-tical perspectives have been used throughout the study: social constructivism, victimology and agenda theory. The results has shown that society's perception regarding rape victims and rape are influenced by well known rape myths. Both confirmative as contradictory comments connected to rape myths are to be found in the articles. The results has no given patterns, which shows the complexity and obscurity in the subject of sexual violence. In addition, the results have displayed that rape victims are constructed in different ways in the articles. Our conclusion is that it seems to be a positive progress in development about how victims of sexual assaults and/or rape are portrayed in news media.

An exploration of street robberies at Bungeni Village under Makhado Municipality, Limpopo Province, South AfricaHlungwani, Hlamalani Mildred January 2021 (has links)
Thesis(M.A. (Criminology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / The purpose of this study was to explore street robberies at Bungeni village, situated under Makhado Municipality of Limpopo Province, South Africa. The study sought to identify factors contributing to street robberies, to assess experiences of victims of these robberies and to determine measures that can be applied to prevent them.
This qualitative study applied the exploratory research design to recruit participants using non-probability sampling techniques, specifically purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Thirteen (13) participants, including ten (10) victims of street robbery and three (3) local SAPS officials were selected for this study. Data was collected using individual face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Based on the transcribed data, themes were extracted and analysed using Thematic Content Analysis (TCA).
This study established that there are factors that contribute to the occurrence of street robberies; victims are affected by street robberies (i.e. be it social, psychological and financial); and that there are measures that may reduce the occurrence of these robberies. Findings of the research indicate that factors such as time, space, individual’s lifestyle and routine activities contribute to victims being robbed in the streets and that these victims experience victimisation of street robberies differently. For recommendations, this study argues that some of these factors are lifestyle exposure, individual activities, spatial and temporal factors. Street robberies are characterised by the use of weapons, force and threat of force by offenders. Lastly, street robberies have a negative impact on victims.

Medias bild av gängkriminella mordoffer : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys gällande dagspressens framställning av mordoffer med kopplingar till kriminella nätverk / Media portrayal of gang criminal murder victims : A qualitative content analysis ofnewspaper’s portrayal of murder victims with connections to criminal gangsGustafsson, Hannah, Laxström, Åsa January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to investigate how Swedish news media portray murdervictims who have connections to criminal networks and to analyze how that representation differs from how other, "innocent" victims of murder exposed to gang-related violence are described. The study analyzed 26 news articles from the Swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen by using a qualitative content analysis. The results of the study showed that the media mainly present criminal murder victims in a negative way by highlighting the criminal parts of the victim's life, such as the crimes they committed and what connections they had to other criminals. This differs from the portrayal of innocent murder victims where media mainly focuses on how the murder victim was percieved as a person and highlights the positive things about the victim's life.

The effectiveness of victim-offender mediation and family group conference programmes on recidivism in Polokwane Municipality, Limpopo ProvinceMontsho, Petronella January 2021 (has links)
Thesis( M. A. ( Criminology and Criminal Justice)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / The VOM and FGC programmes have become valuable instruments for the rehabilitation of offenders. These programmes bring crime victims and offenders together to reach agreements for restitution and community healing. Moreover, the NICRO, a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) in Polokwane, Limpopo Province, offers these programmes to offenders and their victims. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of VOM and FGC programmes on recidivism in Polokwane Municipality, Limpopo Province. The study sought to identify factors contributing to recidivism in Limpopo Province, to explore associated challenges in response to recidivism by the local NICRO and to determine strategies employed by NICRO in response to recidivism in the province.
The qualitative research approach was used in the study. This study further assumed a phenomenological design, which aims to describe, understand and interpret the meaning that participants give to their everyday life. The non-probability sampling technique was used to select participants of the study. One-on-one semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from adult male and female offenders and their family members who participated in VOM and FGC programmes. Data was also collected using one-on-one semi structured interviews from Social Workers at NICRO. Based on the transcribed data, themes were extracted and analysed using Thematic Contents Analysis (TCA). This allowed for an all-inclusive view to be gained of participants' opinions about insights into the topic. The design of the questionnaire was based on the objectives of the study.
This study established that there are factors that contribute to reoffending and challenges in response to recidivism. The findings of the study showed that factors such as unemployment and substance abuse can lead to reoffending. The study recommended that these programmes should address the criminogenic needs of offenders as a measure to respond to recidivism. It has been discovered that VOM and FGC programmes help many offenders to acknowledge and understand the impact of the crime committed to parties.

Deconstructing sexual harassment : an analysis of constructions of unwanted sexual attention and (un)resistance in participant and policy accountsLazard, Lisa January 2009 (has links)
The term ‘sexual harassment’ has been treated as key to victim resistance against normalising constructions of unwanted sexual/gendered attention as ‘just sex’ and as a ‘trivial’ part of everyday life. The act of labelling unwanted conduct as sexual harassment has been constituted as an important political step in reframing normalised problematic conduct as gendered violence as well as legitimising recipient access to formalised routes of amelioration. However concerns have been raised that recipients, particularly women, are ‘reluctant’ to use the term ‘sexual harassment’ to describe their experiences and resist unwanted attention using laws and policies designed to deal with this issue. Drawing on resources from discursive, postmodern and feminist approaches, this thesis explores how constructions of the term ‘sexual harassment’ and strategies to deal with it shape, enable and constrain resistances against gendered/sexualised power relations inscribed in manifestations of unwanted attention. It unpacks how discourses of sexual harassment polarise labelling and non-labelling behaviour to produce the former as an act of resistance and the latter as non-resistance. This project moves away from this polarisation to consider boundary construction around the issue of sexual harassment. Through discursive analysis of narratives identified through Q methodological analysis and constructions produced in interview data, this thesis examines how both inclusion and exclusion of relevant issues in multiple understandings of sexual harassment and policy considerations impact challenges that can be made to unwanted conduct. Central to this examination is critical consideration of the operation of gendered power relations within sexual harassment discourses. I pay particular attention to how various constructions of resistance within sexual harassment discourses become embedded in and re(produce) gendered binaries of dominance-subordination. This thesis considers how gendered binaries might be transgressed and destabilised by articulating alternative spaces for the performance of resistance

Tryggare kan ingen vara? : - En kvalitativ studie om socialarbetares och polisers samverkansarbete och föreställningar kring unga brottsofferRignell, Mika, Robertsson, Mikaela January 2016 (has links)
Abstract The aim of this study was to reach a deeper understanding of how social workers and police officers collaborate and what perceptions they have of young victims of crime and their needs. The study is based on a qualitative approach consisting of three group interviews and four individual interviews with police officers and social workers from the social service’s victim support center, Stödcentrum. The study's empirical data has been analyzed by using Danermark’s collaboration theory and social constructivism and has been discussed in relation to previous research. The results showed that social workers and police officers generally have a positive attitude towards collaboration with each other. The respondents felt that engaged managers, co-location and personal relationships had a positive impact on collaboration. Insufficient routines, employee turnover, privacy laws and limited insight contribute to negative experiences. It also emerged that, while both groups had shared perceptions of victims of crime, the police chosed in their response to distinguish between the roles of victims and perpetrator in their contact.

Resilience in childhood sexual abuse survivorsTshume, Nobom 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA) -- Stellenbosch University, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study will review the literature on resilience in adult female childhood sexual abuse
survivors with specific focus on incestuous abuse. Adults with histories of sexual abuse
are categorised as either resilient or non-resilient on the basis of current functioning.
Characteristics of the family of origin and its perceived contribution to the child sexual
abuse are discussed. The developmental psychopathology literature addressing issues of
resilience and vulnerability to stresses is addressed. The theoretical concepts of
resilience, as they relate to protective mechanisms are discussed.
