Evaluating Organizational Democracy

The purpose is to identify actions that strengthen empowerment, examine how they are applied in the managerial and educational practices, and determine the outcomes for participants and stakeholders. I developed an assessment protocol based on organizational democracy principles through an examination of peer reviewed literature and field observations. I applied the resulting evaluation framework in a case study of Juventud FACETA, a program at the Amigos Multicultural Services Center, an organization that has sought to incorporate democratic practices in their mission. In recent times, sport's responsibility has grown beyond being only Sweden's largest people movement and activating people. Now sport is also expected to contribute to crime prevention and prevent other social problems. Using sport as a method and a kind of gear has in turn given sport other challenges. By using institutional theory, the study wants to highlight the working practices in which nonprofit organizations use in their own associations as well as with other organizations, to promote integration. The study is aimed at basketball associations in socio- economically vulnerable areas. To investigate this, a main issue was formulated and to answer it, two questions were formulated as an aid. An unstructured group interview was conducted consisting of four (4) respondents with different positions and active in sports in the socio- economically vulnerable areas. Four (4) semistructured interviews were also conducted with sports leaders in the basketball associations in the same areas. The results showed that cooperation between the association, school, the Swedish Basketball Federation, the municipality and the district is of utmost importance in the work of integration and other social problems. Different types of projects are also a common practice. The basketball associations generally have the same working practices with the organizations in the surrounding area with certain exceptions that occur within their own associations.

Evolution of Nonprofits: Organizational Structures and Perceptions of Effectiveness within Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Services

abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the structures of nonprofit victim service organizations and organizational effectiveness. Past research has rarely considered the structures of nonprofit institutions, and thus there is a lack of understanding regarding how nonprofit service organizations function, and whether not traditional concepts of effectiveness can accurately describe organizational success. Thus, there is an opportunity for further exploration regarding how this structural change impacted organizational effectiveness. This study used mixed-methodology including surveys (N=16), interviews (N=17), and comparative case studies (N=5) to examine nonprofit organizational structures and effectiveness in efforts to answer questions regarding the reality of hybrid nonprofit structures, the characteristics of these hybrid structures, and the presentation of organizational effectiveness in nonprofit service organizations. The findings revealed that a) hybrid structures are overwhelmingly the style of service nonprofits, b) externally bureaucratic structures and collective internal structures are combined to form these hybrid organizations, and c) traditional measures of organizational effectiveness as well as characteristics unique to hybrid structures are influential in determining effectiveness in nonprofit service organizations. Um estudo da aprendizagem organizacional em organizações sem fins lucrativos : uma avaliação das Câmaras de Dirigentes Lojistas do Rio Grande do Sul

As organizações, assim como as pessoas, precisam desenvolver a capacidade de se modificarem, adaptando-se e criando alternativas para solução dos problemas com os quais se defrontam a cada dia. Nesse sentido, a Aprendizagem Organizacional (AO) por meio do compartilhamento e da construção coletiva de novos conhecimentos, é um dos fatores determinantes para produzir novas situações e novos desafios. E para Organizações Sem Fins Lucrativos (NPOs), a AO torna-se imperativo, pois como afirma Drucker (1999), este tipo de organização precisa aprender a medir e avaliar desempenho principalmente em torno de sua missão. Assim, se em qualquer organização o fator humano é fundamental, nas instituições sem fins lucrativos, este, se torna decisivo para avaliar desempenho. Porém, antes de tudo, as organizações precisam avaliar onde elas “estão”, para planejar o próximo caminho. Nesse contexto, os modelos de níveis de maturidade podem contribuir como uma ferramenta de avaliação do estágio de desenvolvimento de uma organização em relação a um determinado interesse organizacional. Dessa forma, o interesse organizacional desse trabalho foi inicialmente a proposição de cinco dimensões da AO das NPOs, e em especial, das entidades de classe, as Câmara de Dirigentes Lojistas (CDL´s), as quais foram: (1) Clima para Questionamentos, (2) Tomada de Decisões, (3) Programas de Capacitação, (4) Comprometimento e Desempenho, e (5) Memória Organizacional. Após, tais dimensões foram associadas com os níveis de maturidade preconizados pela proposta de um modelo de maturidade, a partir dos critérios estruturais utilizados no CMM (Capability Maturity Model) para aferir maturidade. Isso propiciou a criação de um instrumento de pesquisa, com 27 (vinte e sete) perguntas do tipo fechadas, que foi aplicado, por meio de uma survey, a um grupo de 41 (quarenta e uma) CDL´s em atuação no Rio Grande do Sul. Como resultado obteve-se um panorama do estado do RS, identificando como as CDL´s consideram os aspectos da AO, dentro das categorias de estudo definidas nessa pesquisa. Também foi identificado o grau de importância atribuído a cada dimensão e categoria. Assim, considerando a associação com os critérios dos níveis de maturidade propostos, o estudo mostrou que as CDL´s atingiram na média geral o grau de 1,96 (em um máximo de 5,00) nos aspectos mensurados da AO. Este grau, que está muito próximo do chamado nível Controlado (2,00 a 2,99), mas ainda pertencente ao nível considerado Imprevisível (até 1,99), demonstra que as CDL´s sinalizam estar em um processo de início de utilização de práticas repetidas, ou seja, iniciando a utilização de processos planejados, executados e controlados, de acordo com os critérios do CMM e às dimensões propostas. In this sense, organizational learning (OL) through the sharing and collective construction of new knowledge, is one of the determining factors to produce new situations and new challenges. And for Nonprofit Organizations (NPOs), OL becomes imperative because as it claims Drucker (1999), this type of organization must learn to measure and evaluate performance particularly around its mission. Thus, in any organization the human factor is essential in nonprofits, it becomes decisive for evaluate performance. However first of all, organizations need to evaluate where they "are", to plan the next path. In this context, models of maturity levels could serve as a tool for assessing the stage of development of an organization in relation to a particular organizational interest. Thus, the organizational interest of this work was first to propose five dimensions of OL of NPOs, in particular, the associations, the Shop Manager Chamber (CDL's), which were: (1) Climate for Questions, (2) Decision Making, (3) Training Programs (4), Compromise and Performance, and (5) Organizational Memory. After such dimensions were associated with the maturity levels recommended by proposing a maturity model, based on structural criteria used in the CMM (Capability Maturity Model) to assess maturity. This caused the creation of a research instrument, with 27 (twenty-seven) closed type questions, which was applied by means of a survey, a group of 41 (forty-one) CDL's acting on the Rio Grande do Sul. As a result it was obtained an overview of the state of RS, identifying as CDL's consider aspects of OL within the categories defined in this research study. Also was identified the degree of importance given to each dimension and category. Thus, considering the association with the criteria proposed maturity levels, the study showed that the CDL's reach general average the level of 1.96 (at a maximum of 5.00) in the measured aspects of the OL. This degree, which is very close to the level called Controlled (2.00 to 2.99), but still belonging to the level considered Unpredictable (up to 1.99), shows that the CDL's signal to be in a process of start of use repeated practice, namely starting the use of procedures planned, executed and controlled in accordance with the criteria of the CMM and the proposed dimensions. The study also found that the proposed dimensions of the OL to measure, attained a high degree of importance, of 4.43 (for a maximum of 5.00), demonstrating the relevance of these dimensions given by CDL's.

Online marketing and fundraising strategies for non-profit organisations in the Cape Town health sector

Non-profit organisations take on much of the work that the government cannot deliver with respect to the overall wellbeing of patients at hospitals, in specialised care, in basic healthcare, and most significantly, in areas where private healthcare is unaffordable. This study investigates online marketing, fundraising activities and strategies of non-profit organisations in Cape Town’s health sector. It illustrates the growing popularity of these channels, and argues that many non-profit organisations are not using online marketing tools effectively to raise the funds and support they need. Two longstanding non-profit organisations based at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, are the subject of the study, as this hospital is a prime example of how a government-run institution relies on the support of effective non-profit organisations. The conceptual framework required extensive reviews of the existing literature on the South African non-profit sector, the health sector and the role of non-profit organisations in these sectors. Furthermore, it reviewed successful marketing practices for non-profit organisations, including appropriate online marketing and fundraising strategies. A qualitative and quantitative research approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews and an online survey of twenty-seven health sector non-profit organisations. Key people in the non-profit health sector, the non-profit communication design sector and the corporate online marketing sector were interviewed. The online survey was conducted to gain a clear insight into the current online marketing practices and activities of Cape Town based health sector non-profit organisations. Grounded theory was used as an analytical tool in this research where themes emerge and theory is constructed based on insights and knowledge gained during the research. The results reveal that many non-profit organisations in the Cape Town health sector do not seem aware of the benefits of implementing an online marketing and fundraising strategy. This study concludes that online marketing and fundraising is vital for a non-profit organisation’s success. It is recommended that all members of non-profit organisations learn as much as they can about the importance of online marketing, as well as the importance of having a solid strategy. A unique framework for branding, strategy, online marketing and fundraising is proposed as a solution to the research problem, and further recommendations include the design of a textbook or eBook and an online platform connecting non-profit organisations in the health sector in South Africa.

The utilisation of change management in non-profit organisations: a business necessity

RESEARCH THESIS Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR TECHNOLOGIAE: Human Resource Management In the faculty of Business CAPE PENINSULA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY 2013 / A sizeable number of individuals and organisations are not keen to invest or donate significant amounts of cash in non-profit organisations (NPOs) since the results of their donations or investment cannot always be shown or substantiated. Thus, changing from a traditional non-governmental organisation (NGO) to a social enterprise seems to be the only ‘bail-out’ for NPOs should they wish to sustain and maintain their activities. This study investigated the possibility of utilising change management as a tool for NGOs wishing to transition from traditional to social enterprises. The objective was to assess how change management models initially developed for profit/business organisations, could effectively be applied in NPOs. In order to assess the suitability of these models, the study used two types of research methods. The first was theoretical and took the form of a literature review. The second was empirical and was held in the field (experimental). In addition to the consultation of secondary data and the field experiment, the study used other research tools which were: interviews, focus group discussion, direct observation and survey questionnaires. The study found that change management principles developed for profit organisations are also suitable for NPOs, however, certain adaptations are needed to ensure successful implementation of change initiatives in this sector.
