An Inquiry Into Relationships Between Spirituality and Language Pedagogy

Bradley, Christopher January 2011 (has links)
Some psychologists (e.g., Bergin, 1997) have contended that if individuals neglect the world of the spirit, they ignore a foundational aspect of themselves. This must especially be true for language educators, who come from all corners of the globe and thus bring into their classrooms many spiritual views. I define spirituality, following Palmer (2003) as “the eternal human yearning to be connected with something larger than our own egos” (p. 377). Spirituality need not, then, entail belief in a supernatural being or force. The main thrust of Palmer’s definition was that educators should seek to forge meaningful and lasting connections with their learners. Although such thinking is common in general education, it has been little addressed in Second Language Education (SLE). Hence, I felt that this inquiry was timely. I undertook this qualitative case study by analyzing narratives about the turning points in the spiritual journeys of nine language teachers of varying creeds (or who professed no overt spirituality), as well as their stories of how they felt that they applied their spiritual beliefs to classroom teaching. To this end, I interviewed each participant at least twice. After analyzing their interview transcript data, I triangulated the common themes emerging from these data with, where appropriate, the informants’ classroom syllabuses, lesson plans, and academic publications. I also attempted to validate the results of this study through member checking. Three participants felt that their journeys into religious pluralism had strongly influenced their efforts to teach social responsibility and challenging moral dilemmas in their classrooms. Another three held that their tribulations, as well as the resulting comfort they found in spiritual practices, helped them to be nurturing teachers who could understand clearly the pain faced by some of their young charges. Still another three, despite their divergent spiritual paths, all insisted that they sought to teach in an ethical, caring manner. Finally, most of the informants, regardless of their spiritual backgrounds or views, spoke of the importance of transformation, ethics, and connection (nurturing) to their pedagogy. I conclude the study by positing implications of the aforementioned findings for research and practice. / CITE/Language Arts

Hendén, Stefan, Dahlgren, Andreas January 2016 (has links)
Parallel to the evolution of digital media in recent years, the buyer’s journey has changed. B2B-customers today let suppliers in at the end of the process rather than from the beginning. Marketing Automation addresses that problem and has emerged as a bridge between the sales and marketing processes as it support efficient and au-tomated lead development. The purpose of this study is to examine how marketing automation affects the sales and marketing processes. What conditions are needed for an implementation? Will it increase profitability? We have therefore chosen to describe Marketing Automation, and in particular con-sider whether the introduction of marketing automation means that sales and market-ing organizations merges into one organizational unit? In the study, we have identi-fied and described the modern buyer’s journey and what sometimes is called the rev-enue department. We have found that Marketing Automation is relatively unexplored in a Swedish con-text. To explore if the theory, which is largely based on international literature and research, can be transferred to a Swedish context, we have chosen to conduct a quali-tative study and case study of suppliers of products and services in the area as well as companies, representing a knowledge based offering, which has implemented solu-tions for marketing automation. In our analysis, there is a general consensus between suppliers and customers of the conditions for implementation, but we can also see how the results diverge, not least regarding aspects such as increase of revenue, ROI and collaboration between sales and marketing organizations. Our conclusion shows that marketing automation can lead to fulfillment of the core values of the company but has not been proven to lead to increased profitability au-tomatically. We see profitability and ROI as potential areas of further exploration.

Spiritual nurturing of children living in the context of poverty, with specific reference to the role of the christian childrenn's worker.

Mathewson, Susanna Elizabeth 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this research was to identify the role of the Christian children’s worker in the spiritual nurturing of children living in the context of poverty. The nurturing of about twelve million poverty-stricken children in South Africa is an overwhelming task. This is especially true when these Christian children’s workers are an unrecognised force and unsure what such nurturing entails. Unintentionally children could be harmed by hurtful actions. This research is placed within the field of Practical Theology and has been undertaken from a Christian spiritual perspective. The thesis is designed as a literature study and utilised Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems approach as a lens in the research. It considered the effects of poverty on children and investigated children’s spiritual development in a context of poverty. An exploration of childhood poverty revealed that poverty is by nature complex, multidimensional and never stands on its own. Children’s lives are entangled within the web of poverty affecting all their life contexts. The invisible “violence” of poverty shapes all areas of children’s lives, leaving scars on their physical, cognitive, educational, emotional, behavioural, social and spiritual development which is carried throughout life. An investigation of children’s spiritual development revealed a renewed interest in children’s spirituality from different perspectives, which resulted in different emphases. Children’s spirituality, like a diamond which has multiple dimensions, includes relational consciousness, awareness-, mystery- and value-sensing, and concerns the wellness of the whole-person. Christian children’s spirituality, in addition, emphasises a conscious relationship with God in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. Context, contextual learning and care for the whole child, which is based on a Christian premise, are essential aspects in the process of a child’s spiritual journey. The role of the Christian children’s worker is to ensure that spiritual nurture embraces all aspects of the lives of poverty-stricken children Practical theological reflections revealed that the perceptions of the Christian children’s worker can influence the effectiveness of ministry. Dangers of having a god complex, dualistic views, compartmentalising ministry and a flawed anthropology of children result in ineffective ministry. In contrast, even though poverty affects all relationships, God is already present with the poor, and the face of God can be found in each child. This requires treating them with dignity and guiding them in restored relationships. The principal conclusion was that the Christian children’s worker can play an important role in the spiritual nurturing of poverty-stricken children. The role includes providing a context of regular relationships with a high level of warmth, support and loving care and offering a Christ-centred Christian children’s ministry where children become aware of God’s presence in their lives. The challenge of conflicting tensions, such as financing resources, meaningful relationships with larger groups and ministry to non-Christian children, will remain. Further research is needed on the interplay between spiritual development and childhood poverty and how to explore God’s presence in larger groups among South Africa’s poor children.

Examining individual differences as predictors of reinforcement and punishment behaviors within romantic couples dealing with substance use : an application of inconsistent nurturing as control theory

Glowacki, Elizabeth Marie 14 November 2013 (has links)
Managing a romantic partner’s substance misuse can be challenging, especially in cases where attempts to show support end up worsening the negative behavior. Understanding what may predict one’s actions towards a partner who smokes or drinks can help to alleviate some of the difficulty associated with these interactions. Therefore, this study was designed to examine how issues of undesirable substance use are managed within college students’ romantic relationships. More specifically, the study applied Inconsistent Nurturing as Control Theory (Le Poire, 1995) to assess the extent to which communication competence, relational uncertainty, perceived network helpfulness, and perceived network hindrance predict the reinforcement and/or punishment of a partner’s smoking or drinking. Results from cross-sectional survey data (N = 270) revealed that a significant, negative relationship existed between perceived network helpfulness and punishment and that there were significant, positive relationships between: perceived network hindrance and punishment, relational uncertainty and reinforcement, and relational uncertainty and punishment. However, there was no evidence indicating that communication competence was correlated with either reinforcement or punishment. Additional findings revealed that individuals reporting on their partners’ drinking, as opposed to their partners’ smoking, were more likely to reinforce the behavior. Men reported on using more reinforcement behaviors than women did and individuals who were in on-again/off-again relationships reported using more punishment than did those in relationships that have not renewed. In addition to examining the communicative behaviors used to address substance misuse, the current study also furthered the development of a scale created for the purposes of quantitatively measuring the constructs of reinforcement and punishment. Implications for studying predictors of reinforcement and punishment strategies are discussed, as is the importance of targeting young adult substance use. / text

Patienters upplevelse av egenvård vid Diabetes mellitus, typ 2 : En litteraturöversikt / Patients experience of self-care in Diabetes mellitus, type 2 : A literature review

Mechouki, Nora, Sabaredzovic, Melina January 2021 (has links)
Background: Diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) is a public health disease that implies a state of chronic hyperglycemia. The disease has increased and is estimated to globally continue to increase significantly. Societal inputs are essential to preserve people's health and to stop the large increase. Diet, physical activity, glucose monitoring and medication are all a part of the self-care that DM2 requires. DM2 is classified as a chronic illness, a kind of illness that can impact the affected individuals both physically and mentally. Nurses have a central role in the care of patients with DM2 to educate, inform, care and support them. Aim: The aim was to explore patients experience of self-care in diabetes type 2. Method: A literature review with 10 scientific articles, chosen from the databases CINAHL complete and Pubmed. These were analyzed through Fribergs description. Results: Six main themes were identified. “Souces of support within diabetes”, “To be in control of the disease”, “Feelings, attitudes and approach in self-care", “Diet and physical activity”, “Economic aspects”, “Healthcare professionals roll within the self-care of diabetes”. Conclusion: Support from loved ones with self-care and knowledge and education about DM2 were key factors for the participants. In lack of knowledge was self-care difficult to achieve but with good knowledge, was a feeling of control over the illness experienced. The most occurring obstacles for self-care was related to diet, economy, and social settings were among other things. Healthcare providers need to improve the information and education that is necessary for patients with DM2 so that they can achieve good self-care.
