The Power of Personality in Decision-Making : A Study of Obama's Decision to Launch Air Strikes in Syria

Johannesson, Emma January 2016 (has links)
Barack Obama’s personality is studied to understand how the personality of a leader can contribute to the decision-making process in foreign policy. The study connects literature from foreign policy analysis as well as psychology to contribute with an example of how these two fields of study can be used simultaneously. Barack Obama is examined through the Five-Level Model of personality in order to understand his characteristics and his behavior. Each level of Obama’s personality is analyzed in regard to the decision to use air strikes towards the terrorist organization Daesh in Syria. The findings show that Obama prefer softer and more peaceful tactics, but also that he has a strong determination to fulfill his goals and to use force when America is faced with a direct threat.

The present work consists in an interdisciplinary critical analysis of ethnic/racial representations in the political ad, American Stories/American Solutions; a 30min infomercial created by Barack Obama’s campaign during the 2008 Presidential Elections in the United States. In this context, we therefore sought to demonstrate the ways through which American Stories/American Solutions reproduces the filmic/narrative schemes of Magical Negro films. We argue that the strategies of ethnic/racial representations used in American Stories/American Solutions are capable of producing an effect of attenuation of white American’s racial fears and anxieties regarding the possible election of the first black man to the presidency of the United States. We describe this effect as a “Magical Negro Effect”. Just as in the case of Magical Negro Films, American Storie/American Solutions reproduces an underlying discourse of white normativity and black subalternity, in addition to creating an effect of invisibilization of racism and of the racial hierarchies of America’s social structure. Based on the theory of racial formation, developed by Howard Winant and Michael Omi, we concluded that American Stories/American Solutions implicitly reproduces an ideology of colorblindness, upon which stands the current hegemonic racial project in the United States. In addition to contributing to the studies of implicit racial appeals in electoral campaigns, this investigation seeks a convergence between different disciplines and analytical traditions to demonstrate how ethnic/racial identities are cinematographically constructed, how the racial meanings produced by them connect to the political and social realities of specific historical periods, and to reveal the ideological discourses of racial supremacy reproduced by these representations.

This dissertation analyses the foreign trade policy conceived throughout the Obama administration (2009 – 2017) with the purpose of revealing the policy´s potential implications for the international trade regime. The aim of this study is to explain the historical process that led the United States to move from immobilism to a more assertive engagement during these eight years, with regard to its international insertion through trade. Moreover, the analytical-methodological approach that Susan Strange presents in States and markets is here employed to better clarify strategic objectives beyond trade liberalization, which are associated with the preference for mega-regional agreements as the main tools of the Democratic administration’s foreign trade policy. According to the central hypothesis of this study, by adopting that trade policy, the United States would bring about changes in the normative framework of the multilateral trade system, further subjecting the current international regime that regulates trade between countries to significant transformations.

Garrido Sánchez, Andrés Martín 25 September 2017 (has links)

Case Study of my.barackobama.com: Promoting Participatory Democracy?

Baarda, Rachel January 2012 (has links)
An ongoing debate surrounds the question of whether digital media can promote participatory democracy. A qualitative case study was conducted on Barack Obama’s campaign social networking site, my.barackobama.com, in order to investigate the ways in which the website promotes or discourages participatory democracy. For a rich analysis, the case study drew on various relevant theoretical perspectives, including the concepts of participatory democracy and digital democracy. The case study included a content analysis of the website and interviews with members of groups on the site. The study found that my.barackobama.com promoted political knowledge and non-electoral participation, but failed to promote political discussion and community. Consequently, the recommendations highlighted the importance of an online public sphere. The findings of this case study add to the research literature about the political use of digital media, and they also add new information about Barack Obama’s digital media strategies.

Mixed Frames of Obamacare: a Critical Discourse Analysis of the Intertwining of Rights and Market Framing Discourse Surrounding the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act

Leimbigler, Betsy January 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates the complex relationship between political institutions and health care policy through framing techniques employed in political discourse in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). It addresses how rights and market framing interact in the development, passage and further discourses on the PPACA. President Obama’s discourses are analyzed using qualitative critical discourse analysis of five remarks and addresses given between 2009-2013. These speeches are unpacked and catego-rized to illustrate the change in framing techniques over time. Three main findings are presented after the analysis portion: market framing is used more frequently in the developmental stages of the PPACA, mixed rights and market framing are largely conveyed through anecdotes, and the “right to affordable health care” is forwarded as an argument. These findings support the main argument that rights and market frames have a high level of interaction in the development of the PPACA.
