A Study of the Technology - Structure Relationships in Design-Build Engineering ProjectsChen, Chien-Chih 10 July 2007 (has links)
The Design-Build delivery method has gained popularity in the construction industry in the 21st century among clients seeking singular responsibility, shorter delivery time frame and management of complex works. In this exploratory study, a model that considers the effects of project technical system on the project organisation structure has been proposed. Project technical system comprises of two dimensions: technical uncertainty and technical complexity, while integration, organisational differentiation, information processing and project size were considered as dimensions of the project organisation structure.
Several hypotheses linking the relationship between technical uncertainty, technical complexity and project structure has been developed. A self-administered questionnaire was developed as the data collection instrument. Field data were collected from design-build projects in the civil and architectural construction industry in Taiwan, and analysed at the project level. The technical system-structure relationships were tested statistically mainly by multiple regression.
Results indicate that various scholarly perspectives of uncertainty have a common underlying construct. Several inter-correlations among components of the technical system were identified, and interactively they affect the project organisation structure. Technical uncertainty was found to be a better predictor of information processing and internal integrative efforts than technical complexity. Less structured and flexible information processes and coordinative mechanisms were favoured under high levels of technical uncertainty and complexity. Technical complexity was found to partially predict organisational differentiation, particularly by the interacting effects of project scope and concurrency. The level of technical staffing could be explained by project scope and technical differentiation of the complexity dimension. Lastly, the results were mixed for technical complexity as a predictor of the extent to which project work is subcontracted.
The findings of this study contributed to the understanding of the relationships between technical system and organisation structure in complex Design-Build projects. Various managerial implications were outlined. The model proposed in this study can be extended to include project effectiveness, which may lead to the identification of key structural arrangements that contribute to improved project performance.

Exploring strategy implementation in major South African gold mines / Alida Christina van der WesthuizenVan der Westhuizen, Alida Christina January 2014 (has links)
It is essential for the survival of the mining industry to look at the effective streamlining of organisations that can survive in the downturn in the gold cycle and meet the state demands placed on the industry. This study outlines challenges in South African gold mines and investigates the fit of the strategy implementation with the theory of implementing strategy on through the combined organisational design approach of looking at organisational structure, strategic and management control systems and organisational culture as well as corporate governance and strategic leadership. The research focus is on the implementation of generic strategies in South African gold mines pertaining to general industry issues such as strategies to address profitability and sustainability, dealing with the regulatory framework in terms of state intervention in the minerals sectors (SIMS), the Social and Labour Plan (SLP) and the Minerals and Petroleum Development Act of 2002, amended 2013 (MPRDA) and socio-economic concerns through the mining charter and wage demands. The purpose of the research is to explore how management perceives the implementation of strategies in general, without specific attention to the strategies developed for the organisation. The research will explore strategy implementation in South African gold mines and test the theory for the implementation of strategy. The research design is a qualitative study with individual semi-structured interviews. Participants were purposefully selected based on their experience in management roles in South African gold mines. The results of testing the developed theory-based strategy implementation against the practical application of strategy implementation shows an acceptable match in terms of corporate governance and strategic and management control systems. Gaps are identified in terms of organisational structure and culture. Strategic leadership and the strategic implementation plan show larger gaps compared to the theory, which is a concern. Though sound strategies may be in place, implementation fails. The absence of strategy implementation plans is noticeable and not linked back to strategic leadership. / MCom (Business Management), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

Specialisering inom Socialtjänsten : En kvantitativ studie om klienters parallella kontakter inom IFOFisli, Jiyan, Göransson, Kathrin January 2019 (has links)
Swedish social services have become increasingly specialized, with the result that clients with complex needs are in contact with several organizational units and social workers simultaneously. The purpose of the present study was to examine the degree to which such parallel contacts occur within social services and how their incidence has changed over time. We have employed a quantitative method and drawn on statistical material collected from a personal social services organization in a large Swedish town. The material revealed that the extent to which parallel contacts occurred had increased by a third between 2014 and 2018 among clients at the four units that were chosen for the study, while certain client groups had a greater incidence of parallel contacts than other groups. In a concluding section of the study we discussed clients’ complex needs, fragmentation and the overlapping responsibilities of social workers with regard to clients with parallel contacts.

Návrh optimální organizační struktury sociálního podniku / Sustainable organisational structure of a social enterprise - draftSocha, Jan January 2015 (has links)
Social entrepreneurship is an innovative solution to increasing social problems related to unemployment and its inseparable social impact, such as social exclusion of persons that are disadvantaged in terms of labour market access. In spite of the fact that the law of the Czech Republic lacks a legal framework of social entrepreneurship (the term of social enterprise as such is not legally based nor defined), there are many local activists who make effort to change this state of inequality, using social enterprises as a means of generating new workplaces for people handicapped in terms of entering an open labour market. The main practical goal of the thesis I hereby present is to help those social entrepreneurs with creating more sustainable organisation structure of their businesses. The first part of my thesis is dedicated to explaining basic concepts and charting a theoretical framework of the research. In the second part I focus on the results of empirical research regarding social enterprise operation. The results may serve as practical advice on organisation structure optimisation in the field of gastronomy. Keywords Social enterprise, subjects of national economy, social economy, persons disadvantaged in terms of labour market access, organisation structure.

The changes that have shaped the industry over the past decades had a significant impact on work reorganisation. The break-up of the vertically integrated organisation cannot be questioned any more. The network organisation currently stands out as the model that addresses the new socioeconomic context. With irregular borders, inside which departments and actions appear less orderly, this new organisation structure remains an area of exploration aimed to identify the rules that determine both its design and the behaviours of the players that have direct impact on its operations. Although the private sector was the first to carry the effects of these changes, the public sector was impacted as well. Health care is governed today by the network organisation structure paradigm.
The objective of this research is to understand the mechanisms that support this organizational structure, favouring its regulation and its establishment. More precisely it is focused on the analysis of the factors that allow its internal functioning, the coordination of services and the collaboration between different players. To this aim we performed a case study on the chronic disease healthcare target program within a Quebec medical services network (CISSS). Our inquiry allowed us to deep dive into the functioning of this CISSS that stands out as a strongly regulated and institutionalised network and to bring into the spotlight the importance of different players to its operations. The definition of the common objective, aligned with the organizational strategy, allows for the resource integration planning and adaptability to customer needs but it is the harmonisation of these factors that ensures the network’s performance. The stakeholders collaboration based on mutual confidence favours such harmonisation and allows for the identification of solutions that address the common objective, through innovation based on a wide information sharing. This ensures an efficient coordination of the healthcare services. Otherwise, while the structure frames the stakeholders’ actions by defining rules, the stakeholders also reshape the system through their deliberate involvement.
