How do management, in general, perceive female managers, and how do these perceptions influence organizational practices? : An exploratory study of several manufacturing companies in the Umeå Region

Brändström, Matilda, Jonsson, Caroline January 2015 (has links)
Background: Previous researchers have identified perceptions and practices as key barriers to women's advancement opportunities. Moreover, the region of Umeå in Sweden has been experiencing a low representation of female managers, and the manufacturing industry is male-dominated throughout the country. Management perceptions of female managers could be categorized in four different perspectives and these were used after some modification, by adding other, relevant theories from the field of women in management. Organizational practices had shown to be crucial in enforcing gender equality in organizations, and for this study, internal and external recruitment, succession planning and training and development were explored. The intention was to explore how organizational practices had been influenced by management perceptions of female managers, by looking for indicators within these.Purpose: To explore how management, in general, perceive female managers, and how these perceptions might influence organizational practices.Research questions: How do management of several manufacturing companies in the Umeå region perceive female middle managers? and Do these perceptions affect the organizational practices? If so, how?Key concepts:Management perceptions: Subjective constructions of human behavior, more specifically, management attitudes and beliefs towards female middle managers.Middle manager: Someone who deals directly with employees and is in charge of at least one subordinate level and reports to a top-level manager.Organizational practices: Strategic activities in a company.Methodology: This exploratory study was conducted with a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews. Primary data was collected from six different companies in the Umeå Region and secondary data consisted of scientific articles.Findings and conclusions: The perceptions of female middle managers held by management at manufacturing companies in the Umeå Region did influence the organizational practices. In general, all had positive perceptions of women in terms of the economic benefits that they could bring to the companies. In addition, women’s opportunities in the manufacturing companies were influenced by management perceptions of whether women were considered to have the necessary, technical competencies for management positions. Furthermore, it was concluded that those manufacturing companies whose management prioritized the questions of women in management, had the highest representation of female middle managers.

This research mainly aimed at recognizing and analyzing Capoeira’s culture influence on an association’s organizational practices, guided by non-economic principles and on an international expansion phase, in order to recognize the limits and possibilities of its management model. Therefore, a qualitative research was carried on, with an exploratory characteristic, also with an analytical-descriptive orientation, through participant observation. The research subjects are the leaders and members of the GUETO Cultural Association, a non-profit organization that has five international offices. The interpretation of the collected data followed the teachings of "Content Analysis". A great influence stemming from Capoeira’s culture was observed towards organizational practices, especially from the perspective of the initiatory graduation system, regarding some of its characteristics, such as learning by doing, teaching and learning by oral means, the expansion of participation bonds. Regardless of our advancement on identifying such influences, much has to be done in the search for institutional development of such institutions that not always dialogue harmoniously with this approach based on business organizational culture.

Ben Salah, Wided 09 July 2009 (has links)
Our work has tried to identify some elements which may have an effect on labor productivity, among which the incentive contracts, the information and communication’s technologies (ICT) and the organizational practices. We took into account the presence of asymmetric information, susceptible to influence the employment relationships and the firm’s choices concerning the organizational practices or the introduction of ICT. The dissertation is divided into two parts: the first one considers the optimal incentive contracts as well as the effect of various remuneration systems on labor productivity. The second part is devoted to the introduction of ICT and the organizational practices. The empirical results drawn from the first part show that the remuneration’s effect on productivity depends on the adopted type of payment and on the social and occupational group of the beneficiaries. They also indicate that the length of the employment’s contract and the rate of short term debts have an effect on productivity. The results obtained within the framework of the second part of the dissertation show that the employees needed some time to adapt, between 1998 and 1999, before the positive effects of the ICT and organizational practices could appear on their productivity. However given the delays of human capital’s accumulation, the effect on labor productivity of various ICT and organizational practices occurred more quickly in 2004. Finally, we showed that the productivity increases more if the company chooses to undertake both changes at the same time.

More than a passing style of gestation, innovation is taken as a requirement for the existence of organizations in a globalized world. Literature on innovation and innovative organizations presents a big diversity of theoretical models. Analyzing the organizational practices that have to do with innovation and the processes by which these practices institutionalize themselves in innovative organizations was the general goal of this article. To put this work into practice, a qualitative research methodology was applied, and the study of multiple cases was used as a research strategy. Two organizations were analyzed, and some interviews were taken as instruments for collecting data. Theses interviews were considered the main source of information for the analysis of the cases and documentation, as, for instance, reports, websites, folders and newspaper and magazine articles. To guide data collecting and to analyze them, three categories of analysis were chosen: innovative characteristics, innovative practices i

I strongly highlight that the cities are organizational processes, therefore may be based on the daily practices of the organizations that inhabit them. I propose a theoretic approach of the Practice-Based Studies (PBS) in the Administration area with discussions about cities, starting from the discussions proposed by Certeau (2008) having as an empirical context of research the organizational daily routine of cultural entrepreneurs. For the development of these concepts of organizational analysis, I carried a qualitative study in 2017 with a forró subjects in Distrito Federal, considered a popular culture movement. The choice of the organization occurred because the different subjects of forró are constituted by performative shows and events in different locations of the city of Brasilia, that makes possible to comprehend different spaces produced by the organization studied that comprises Brasília. The production of the empirical material for the analysis will occur from the observations of the participants that will be held on a daily bais of the studied organization, as well as interviews of the life history that should be done with the subjects of forró in Brasília. As contribution to the Administration area, I emphasize (1) the relevance of thinking the city as an organizational process; (2) the understanding that daily practices of organizations form policies of production and spaces occupation in the cities; (3) the relevance of thinking popular cultures as organizational processes of resistance against city planning logic; (4) the advance on the theoretical appropriation of Michel de Certeau works to organizational analysis.
