Československý dům v Londýně-Velehrad / Czechoslovak House in London - Velehrad

This Master's thesis deals with Czechoslovak house in London, which is known as Velehrad. It is a charity, which was founded in 1949. The organization has worked with Czechoslovak refugees since the beginning of 50's until the year 1989 when it lost its original importance. In the first part I deal with the charity history, formation of Cyrilometodějské ligy and other things such as funding of the charity. In the second part I compare refugees from two different periods, 1948 and 1968. I also deal with the relationship of Czechoslovakia and refugees. The last part is about charity work. I paid attention especially to contacts with homeland, what kind of help charity provided to refugees and how the organization reflected some events which happened in Czechoslovakia. In the literary review part of this work, the topic is set into the context of family and history, then, the current available findings on this topic in each of the developmental period of an offspring, up to emerging adulthood, are introduced. In the research section, the carried-out research is presented. It focused on the description of the role of a father of current emerging adults in the Czech Republic, on exploration of the term "good father" and on finding relations between the perception of one's own father and reported quality of life. Komunikace otce s dětmi / Fatherʼs Communication with Children

The diploma thesis deals with communication between the child and his/her father. The first part defines basic theoretical terms and summarizes the results of previous research trying to explain the principles of child language acquisition and outline the central features of child-directed speech. The theoretical part is based on information from scientific publications that suggest possible causes of differences between the father's and the mother's child- directed speech. The second part of the thesis consists of individual case studies focusing on the analysis of the audio recordings of natural father-child communication. All participating families signed an informed consent. The recordings were transcribed according to the transcription format of the CHAT system, which is a part of the CHILDES acquisition database. The chapters concerning communication strategies and selected pragmatic, lexical, and syntactic features of the father's child-oriented speech were compared to the findings in the scientific literature. Due to a lack of research results in the Czech language environment, mainly Slovak publications were used for the comparison. Keywords communication, father, child, father's child-oriented speech

Dans le cadre de l’implantation d’une centrale pilote à énergie thermique des mers (ETM) prévue au large des côtes caribéennes de la Martinique d’ici 2020, ces travaux de thèse visent à évaluer les impacts potentiels de la décharge d’eau profonde en surface sur le phytoplancton. La centrale pilote offshore NEMO conçue par DCNS et mise en oeuvre par Akuo Energy prévoit une production d’environ 10 MW. Les eaux froides et riches en nutriments pompées au fond et rejetées en surface par la centrale ETM avec un débit d’environ 100 000 m3.h-1 devraient enrichir les eaux de surface du site d’étude, particulièrement pauvres en nitrate et phosphate. Deux campagnes de mesures sur le terrain à deux saisons contrastées (saison humide en juin 2014 et saison sèche en novembre 2013) ont permis d’apporter une description des différents paramètres physiques et biogéochimiques susceptibles d’induire une modification de la communauté phytoplanctonique. Une variabilité saisonnière marquée de la stratification et des paramètres biogéochimiques a été mise en évidence avec en saison humide une forte influence océanique (advection d’eaux originaires de l’Amazone et de l’Orénoque) et atmosphérique (brumes des sables) enrichissant potentiellement la couche de surface en nutriments et en métaux traces. Des microcosmes in situ ont été développés afin de simuler le rejet d’eau de fond dans la couche de surface sous différents scénarios. De l’eau de surface prélevée dans le maximum de chlorophylle (45 m, où le phytoplancton est le plus abondant) et à la base de la couche euphotique (80 m, où le phytoplancton est présent en très faible abondance) a été enrichie avec un faible (2%) ou fort apport (10%) d’eau de fond (1100 m) et mise à incuber in situ pendant 6 jours. La production primaire a également été estimée dans le milieu naturel et dans les microcosmes. Ces expérimentations ont mis en évidence qu’un fort apport (10%) stimule le développement du micro-phytoplancton, des diatomées en particulier, au détriment des Prochlorococcus, tandis qu’un apport de 2% ne modifie que faiblement la communauté. La réponse des diatomées pourrait être liée à l’apport en nitrate et phosphate par les eaux profondes. La production primaire serait quant-à-elle dépendante de l’assemblage phytoplanctonique en présence, plutôt que de l’intensité de l’apport d’eau profonde. Enfin, les perturbations thermiques liées au rejet d’eau froide de fond ont été évaluées à partir du modèle numérique ROMS. Les seuils d’impact thermique de -3°C préconisés par la World Group Bank et de -0,3°C correspondant à 2% de dilution d’eau profonde ont été considérés. Même au seuil le plus bas (-0,3°C), la surface impactée sur les premiers 150 m de la colonne d’eau était trop faible pour être détectable par la simulation, quelle que soit la profondeur du rejet. L’impact thermique lié au rejet d’eau froide devrait donc être négligeable, et elle serait limitée à moins de 3 km2. Ces travaux constituent la première étape indispensable dans la compréhension de ce que pourrait être l’impact de ce rejet sur l’écosystème à plus long terme. / As part of the implementation of an Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) pilot plant planned off the Caribbean coast of Martinique by 2020, this thesis aims to assess the potential impacts of deep seawater discharge at the surface on the phytoplankton. The offshore pilot plant NEMO, designed by DCNS and implemented by Akuo Energy anticipates production of approximately 10 MW. The cold and nutrient-rich waters that are pumped in the bottom and discharged at the surface by the heat engine with a flow of roughly 100 000 m3 h-1 should enrich surface waters of the study site, which are particularly poor in nitrate and phosphate. Two campaigns of field measurements in two contrasting seasons (the dry season in November 2013 and the wet season in June 2014) have allowed the description of different physical and biogeochemical parameters that may induce changes in the phytoplankton community. Marked seasonal variability in stratification and biogeochemical parameters occurred, with strong oceanic influences (advection of waters from the Amazon and Orinoco) and atmospheric influences (African dust) potentially enriching the surface layer in nutrients and trace metals during the wet season. In situ microcosms were designed to simulate the discharge of bottom waters into the surface layer under different scenarios. Surface water collected at the chlorophyll maximum(45 m, where the phytoplankton is the most abundant), and at the base of the euphotic layer (80 m, where the phytoplankton is present, but in very low abundance) was enriched with either a weak (2%) or strong (10%) input of bottom waters (1100 m), and incubated for 6 days. Primary production was estimated in both the natural environment, and in the microcosms. These experiments have shown that high input (10%) stimulates the development of micro-phytoplankton, especially diatoms, to the detriment of Prochlorococcus. The response of diatoms could be linked to the input of nitrate and phosphate by the deep seawater.Primary production would be dependent on the composition of the phytoplankton assemblage rather than on the intensity of deep water discharge. Finally, thermal disturbances linked to the discharge of cold water at the surface were assessed using a numerical model (ROMS), which considered the thermal impact threshold of -3°C as recommended by the World Bank Group, and -0.3 °C, corresponding to a 2% dilution with deep water. Even at the lowest threshold (-0.3 °C), the area impacted in the first 150 m of the water column was too low to be detected by the simulation, regardless of the discharge depth. The thermal impact of cold water should therefore be negligible and limited to an area of less than 3 km2. This work provides the first critical step in understanding how bottom water discharge may impact the ecosystem in the longer-term.

Wide-Area Measurement Application and Power System Dynamics

Frequency monitoring network (FNET) is a GPS-synchronized distribution-level phasor measurement system. It is a powerful synchronized monitoring network for large-area power systems that provides significant information and data for power system situational awareness, real time and post-event analysis, and other important aspects of bulk systems. This work explored FNET measurements and utilized them for different applications and power system analysis. An island system was built and validated with FNET measurements to study the stability of the OTEC integration. FNET measurements were also used to validate a large system model like the U.S. Eastern Interconnection. It tries to match the simulation result and frequency measurement of a real event by adjusting the simulation model. The system model is tuned with the combination of different impact factors for different confirmed actual events, and some general rules and specific tuning quantities were concluded from the model validation process. This work also investigated the behavior of the power system frequency during large-scale, synchronous societal events, like the World Cup, Super Bowl and Royal Wedding. It is apparent that large groups of people engaging in the same event at roughly the same time can have significant impacts on the power grid frequency. The systematic analysis of the accumulating and statistical FNET frequency data presents an incisive point of view on the power grid frequency behavior during such events. To better understanding of system events recorded by FNET, a visualization tool was developed to visualize major events that occurred in the North American power grid. The measurement plot combined with the geographical contour map provides intuitive visualization of the event. Finally, the EI system was simplified and clustered into four groups based on FNET measurements and simulation results of generator trip cases. The generation and load capacity of each cluster was calculated based on the clustering result and simulation model, and a flow diagram of this simplified EI system was demonstrated with clusters and power flow between them.

The thesis points out the important role of fatherhood in the lives of men. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part, I draw from available literature, journals, websites and sociological researches, and I focus on fatherhood throughout history, knowledge of male identity, the concepts of father in different scientific disciplines and typology of fathers. The second part consists of a qualitative survey conducted in open and indoor playgrounds in České Budějovice. By means of anonymous interviews with both fathers and mothers I examined how fatherhood affects and completes male identity and how important it is for men. Then I evaluated and compared these interviews.

The main theme of the thesis are surface mines in northern Bohemia, the Most. Grasping the subject is moving mainly in personal as well as social aspects. The basis for practical thesis served theoretical thesis. Exploring the phenomenon of a block of flats in theoretical thesis led to turn to the topic of the panel surface mines. At first glance unrelated topics, however, contains an important connection. The coal industry forms an essential part of the development of the current form of North Bohemia, a form of large prefabricated housing. Interest in the originality of the construction in the settlements led to this issue. The work consists of several authentic records and materials from surface mines in Bílina processed in painting and video.

Optimization Of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Power Plants

A proprietary Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) modeling tool, the Makai OTEC Thermodynamic and Economic Model (MOTEM), is leveraged to evaluate the accuracy of finite-time thermodynamic OTEC optimization methods. MOTEM is a full OTEC system simulator capable of evaluating the effects of variation in heat exchanger operating temperatures and seawater flow rates. The evaluation is based on a comparison of the net power output of an OTEC plant with a fixed configuration. Select optimization methods from the literature are shown to produce between 93% and 99% of the maximum possible amount of power, depending on the selection of heat exchanger performance curves. OTEC optimization is found to be dependent on the performance characteristics of the evaporator and condenser used in the plant. Optimization algorithms in the literature do not take heat exchanger performance variation into account, which causes a discrepancy between their predictions and those calculated with MOTEM. A new characteristic metric of OTEC optimization, the ratio of evaporator and condenser overall heat transfer coefficients, is found. The heat transfer ratio is constant for all plant configurations in which the seawater flow rate is optimized for any particular evaporator and condenser operating temperatures. The existence of this ratio implies that a solution for the ideal heat exchanger operating temperatures could be computed based on the ratio of heat exchanger performance curves, and additional research is recommended.

The Moroccan Driss Chraïbi belongs to the most important Francophone authors in the contemporary Maghreb literature. A lot of his works are inspired by autobiography literature and this thesis will study this part of his work. We will consider culture aspects of Driss Chraïbi's texts and focus on characters of mother and father. We will see how the traditional family model is affected by the West one, so by the European culture. The images of father develop from a patriarch tyrant to a friendly man understanding the modern world. Mother, traditionally representing the tradition and the family, becomes in certain texts fighter for the woman liberation and for women's rights. However the author does not seem to reject the tradition. The analysis focuses on these questions. At the beginning we will also introduce the author in the North African literature context and determine the part of the autofiction of Driss Chraïbi's works.
