Cognitive Modeling for Human-Automation Interaction: A Computational Model of Human Trust and Self-Confidence

Katherine Jayne Williams (11517103) 22 November 2021 (has links)
Across a range of sectors, including transportation and healthcare, the use of automation to assist humans with increasingly complex tasks is also demanding that such systems are more interactive with human users. Given the role of cognitive factors in human decision-making during their interactions with automation, models enabling human cognitive state estimation and prediction could be used by autonomous systems to appropriately adapt their behavior. However, accomplishing this requires mathematical models of human cognitive state evolution that are suitable for algorithm design. In this thesis, a computational model of coupled human trust and self-confidence dynamics is proposed. The dynamics are modeled as a partially observable Markov decision process that leverages behavioral and self-report data as observations for estimation of the cognitive states. The use of an asymmetrical structure in the emission probability functions enables labeling and interpretation of the coupled cognitive states. The model is trained and validated using data collected from 340 participants. Analysis of the transition probabilities shows that the model captures nuanced effects, in terms of participants' decisions to rely on an autonomous system, that result as a function of the combination of their trust in the automation and self-confidence. Implications for the design of human-aware autonomous systems are discussed, particularly in the context of human trust and self-confidence calibration.

Etude du développement d’une flamme soumise à un gradient de concentration : Rôle de la stratification et des EGR / Study of the development of flame kernel submited to a concentration gradient : role of stratification and egr

Gruselle, Catherine 22 January 2014 (has links)
Stratified combustion, which consists in burning an inhomogeneous fuel/air mixture, and diluted combustion, which consists in adding a limited quantity of burnt gases, are two technologies used in internal combustion engines to reduce fuel consumption. This Ph.D is devoted to the study of ignition in these two types of combustion in laminar and turbulent regimes. A new kinetic scheme for propane/air combustion has been derived and combined to two modeling approaches: finite-rate chemistry and an FPI tabulated chemistry approach. In the laminar case, both approaches give similar results and a simplified model has highlighted the importance of fresh and burnt gases dynamics on the kernel development. In the turbulent case, several techniques of analysis have shown the dependency of absolute flame speed on the mean fluid velocity and the lack of correlation to the local equivalence ratio.

Εffect οf the suppοrt οn the activity and mοrphοlοgy οf hydrοdesulfurizatiοn catalysts / Effet du support sur la morphologie et l'activité des catalyseurs d'hydrodésulfuration

Dominguez Garcia, Elizabeth 19 December 2017 (has links)
The influence of the support effect on the sulfide phases formation, i.e. morphology, sites dispersión, structure and catalytic activity for hydrotreating catalysts was studied. The study started by Mo catalysts and followed by CoMo catalysts supported on alumina silica and titania. The support effect appeared to be the key factor to control the morphology of MoS2 slabs. The morphology was studied using a powerful technique so-called IR/CO, i.e. CO adsorption followed by FTIR spectroscopy. This method allows the distinction of two types of edge exposed on the MoS2 slabs so-called M- and S-edge and then permits the study of the morphology by the S-/M-edge ratio. Thus, for a weak interaction MoS2-support deformed hexagon morphology was detected whereas for a strong interaction triangle morphology was observed. These different morphologies were used to study the Co localization by the same method, IR/CO. This method also allows the distinction between non- and promoted sites as well as Co located on M- and S-edges. Hence, the comparison between S-/M-edge ratio and promotion degree (promoted/non-promoted sites ratio) showed that Co is present on both M- and S-edges for the three CoMo supported catalysts. Additionally, a detailed study showed that Co preferentially decorates S-edge sites. Consequently, the CoMoS site structures for each catalyst has been studied by 2D IRIS method. This novel method developped in LCS allows the resolution of overlapping IR/CO bands which were previously a limitation for CoMoS sites characterization. This advance in the CoMo characterization lead to the study of detailed CoMoS structure. After the assignment of three bands which are observed in the promoted range of IR/CO spectra, it appeared that S-edge sites were partially promoted by Co, whereas M-edge sites could be partially and totally promoted by Co. The different proportion of those sites have an effect on HDS (hydrodesulfuration) reactivity. Thus, higher intrinsic activity was found for M-edge partially promoted by Co followed by totally promoted and finally the S-edge partially promoted sites.

Flamelet/progress variable modelling and flame structure analysis of partially premixed flames

Hartl, Sandra 17 August 2017 (has links)
This dissertation addresses the analysis of partially premixed flame configurations and the detection and characterization of their local flame regimes. First, the identification of flame regimes in experimental data is intensively discussed. Current methods for combustion regime characterization, such as the flame index, rely on 3D gradient information that is not accessible with available experimental techniques. Here, a method is proposed for reaction zone detection and characterization, which can be applied to instantaneous 1D Raman/Rayleigh line measurements of major species and temperature as well as to the results of laminar and turbulent flame simulations, without the need for 3D gradient information. Several derived flame markers, namely the mixture fraction, the heat release rate and the chemical explosive mode, are combined to detect and characterize premixed versus non-premixed reaction zones. The methodology is developed and evaluated using fully resolved simulation data from laminar flames. The fully resolved 1D simulation data are spatially filtered to account for the difference in spatial resolution between the experiment and the simulation, and experimental uncertainty is superimposed onto the filtered numerical results to produce Raman/Rayleigh equivalent data. Then, starting from just the temperature and major species, a constrained homogeneous batch reactor calculation gives an approximation of the full thermochemical state at each sample location. Finally, the chemical explosive mode and the heat release rate are calculated from this approximated state and compared to those calculated directly from the simulation data. After successful validation, the approach is applied to Raman/Rayleigh line measurements from laminar counterflow flames, a mildly turbulent lifted flame and turbulent benchmark cases. The results confirm that the reaction zones can be reliably detected and characterized using experimental data. In contrast to other approaches, the presented methodology circumvents uncertainties arising from the use of limited gradient information and offers an alternative to known reaction zone identification methods. Second, this work focuses on the flame structure of partially premixed dimethyl ether (DME) flames. DME flames form significant intermediate hydrocarbons in the reaction zone and are classified as the next more complex fuel candidate in research after methane. To simulate DME combustion processes, accurate predictions by computational combustion models are required. To evaluate such models and to identify appropriate flame regimes, numerical simulations are necessary. Therefore, fully resolved simulations of laminar dimethyl ether flames, defined by different levels of premixing, are performed. Further, the qualitative two-dimensional structures of the partially premixed DME flames are discussed and analyses are carried out at selected slices and compared to each other as well as to experimental data. Further, the flamelet/progress variable (FPV) approach is investigated to predict the partially premixed flame structures of the DME flames. In the context of the FPV approach, a rigorous analysis of the underlying manifold is carried out based on the newly developed regime identification approach and an a priori analysis. The most promising flamelet look-up table is chosen for the fully coupled tabulated chemistry simulations and the results are further compared to the fully resolved simulation data.

Komparativní analýza neúspěšných strategií k získání mezinárodního uznání: Somaliland, Podněstří a Náhorní karabach / A Comparative Analysis of Failed Strategies to Achieve International Recognition: Somaliland, Transnistria and Nagorno-Karabakh

Lavoie, Samuel January 2020 (has links)
Author Samuel Lavoie Thesis Diplomacy and Diplomatic Institutions of Unrecognized De Facto States Somaliland, Transnistria and Artsakh (2020) Abstract As a topic, international recognition has been increasingly studied over the past twenty years, particularly since Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia in 2008. This thesis attempts to advance our understanding of the underlying causes of the inability to gain political recognition by examining several factors that have been omitted from the academic literature. Specifically, it examines several key aspects of the diplomatic institutions, personnel, and approaches of three unrecognized de facto states that meet most of the criteria for statehood under international law, but have so far received no recognition recognized states. These entities are Somaliland, Transnistria, and Artsakh. This paper also draws on partially recognized states and finds that geopolitical and ideological factors generally prevail over diplomatic ones as the main drivers of political recognition. This is especially true when an entity is located in an area of fierce rivalry for influence, such as the PMR and the Republic of Artsakh. However, while remaining a secondary factor, diplomacy becomes more important for international recognition when the interests of...

Kooperativní hry s částečnou informací / Cooperative games with partial information

Černý, Martin January 2021 (has links)
(english) May 21, 2021 Partially defined cooperative games are a generalisation of classical coopera- tive games in which the worth of some of the coalitions is not known. Therefore, they are one of the possible approaches to uncertainty in cooperative game the- ory. The main focus of this thesis is to collect and extend the existing results in this theory. We present results on superadditivity, convexity, positivity and 1-convexity of incomplete games. For all the aforementioned properties, a de- scription of the set of all possible extensions (complete games extending the incomplete game) is studied. Different subclasses of incomplete games are con- sidered, among others incomplete games with minimal information, incomplete games with defined upper vector or symmetric incomplete games. Some of the results also apply to fully generalised games. For superadditivity and 1-convexity, solution concepts (considering only par- tial information) are introduced and studied. Especially for 1-convexity, a thor- ough investigation of the defined solution concepts consisting of different char- acterisations is provided. 1
