Numerical models for degradation of concrete in hydraulic structures due to long-term contact with water

The durability of concrete is of major concern in all types of concrete structures where the combined effect of exposure conditions and the type and quality of the concrete material usually determines the rate of degradation. Furthermore, there are synergy effects between different deterioration mechanisms, which means that the combined rate of degradation is higher than the sum of the individual rates of each mechanism. Therefore, to accurately predict the residual service life of existing structures or when designing new structures, it is essential to consider all these aspects. This means that various chemical and physical processes, as well as how these interact, must be taken into account in models aiming to be used for service life predictions. This thesis presents the first part of a research project with the aim to investigate common deterioration mechanisms of concrete in hydraulic structures, and to improve the knowledge how these and other related phenomena can be described using mathematical models. The objective is also to study how different mechanisms interact and to find suitable approaches to account for these interactions in the models. To this end, a literature survey on commonly detected damage in hydraulic structures is presented. In addition, it also addresses in what types of and where in hydraulic structures the various damage types are usually observed. The mathematical models presented in this part of the project are focused on long-term water absorption in air-entrained concrete as well as on freezing of partially saturated air-entrained concrete. Both models are based on a multiphase description of concrete and poromechanics to describe the coupled hygro-thermo-mechanical behaviour. The thesis also presents some of the basic concepts of multiphase modelling of porous media, including discretization of the models using the finite element method (FEM). Furthermore, it covers the simplifications that are usually introduced in the general macroscopic balance equations for mass, energy and linear momentum when modelling cement-based materials. To verify the developed models and to show their capabilities, simulation results are compared with experimental data, in situ measurements and other simulations from the literature. The results indicate that both models perform well and can be used to predict long-term moisture conditions in hydraulic structures as well as freezing-induced strains in partially saturated air-entrained concrete, respectively. Even though no interactions with other deterioration mechanisms are included in the models, the development and use of these have given insights to which parameters that are important to consider in such extensions. Furthermore, based on the insights gained, the complexity of describing the full interactions between several mechanisms in mathematical models is also discussed. It is concluded that models aiming to be used for service life predictions of hydraulic structures in day-to-day engineering work need to be simplified. However, the type of advanced models presented in this thesis can serve as a basis to study which aspects and parameters that are essential to consider in simplified prediction models. / Beständigheten hos betong är av avgörande betydelse i alla typer av betongkonstruktioner där den kombinerade effekten av exponeringsförhållanden samt typ och kvalitet på betongmaterialet vanligtvis avgör nedbrytningshastigheten. Dessutom finns synergieffekter mellan olika nedbrytningsmekanismer som innebär att den kombinerade nedbrytningshastigheten är större än summan av de enskilda nedbrytningshastigheterna. För att noggrant kunna prediktera den återstående livislängden hos befintliga konstruktioner eller vid design av nya konstruktioner är det därför viktigt att ta hänsyn till samtliga av dessa aspekter. Detta innebär att olika kemiska och fysikaliska processer, samt hur dessa interagerar med varandra, måste tas i beaktande i modeller som avses användas för livslängdsbedömningar. Den här licentiatuppsatsen presenterar den första delen av ett forskningsprojekt där målet är att studera vanligt förekommande nedbrytningsmekanismer i vattenbyggnadskonstruktioner och att öka kunskapen om hur dessa och andra relaterade fenomen kan beskrivas med matematiska modeller. Målet är också att studera hur olika nedbrytningsmekanismer samverkar och att hitta lämpliga tillvägagångssätt att ta hänsyn till dessa interaktioner i modellerna. För detta ändamål presenteras en litteraturstudie avseende vanligt förekommande skador i vattenbyggnadskonstruktioner. Dessutom behandlar denna i vilka typer av vattenbyggnadskonstruktioner och var i dessa som de olika typerna av skador vanligtvis observeras. De matematiska modeller som presenteras i denna del av projektet är inriktade på långtidsabsorption av vatten i lufttillsatt betong samt på frysning i delvis vattenmättad lufttillsatt betong. Båda modellerna är baserade på en multifasbeskrivning av betong samt poromekanik för att beskriva det kopplade hydro-termo-mekaniska beteendet. Uppsatsen presenterar också några av de grundläggande koncepten gällande multifasmodellering av porösa material, inklusive diskretisering av modellerna genom användning av finita elementmetoden (FEM). Dessutom beskrivs de förenklingar som vanligtvis införs i de generella makroskopiska balansekvationerna för massa, energi och rörelsemängd då cementbaserade material modelleras. Simuleringsresultat från de utvecklade modellerna jämförs med försöksdata, fältmätningar samt andra simuleringsresultat från litteraturen för att verifiera modellerna samt visa hur de beter sig. Resultaten visar att båda modellerna ger tillfredställande resultat och kan användas för att uppskatta de långsiktiga fuktförhållandena i vattenbyggnadskonstruktioner samt frysinducerade töjningar i delvis vattenmättad lufttillsatt betong. Även om inga interaktioner mellan andra nedbrytningsmekanismer inkluderades i modellerna, så har utvecklingen samt användandet av dessa gett insikter gällande vilka parametrar som är viktiga att beakta i sådana vidareutvecklingar. Baserat på dessa insikter diskuteras också komplexiteten i att beskriva interaktionen mellan flertalet mekanismer i matematiska modeller. Det konstateras också att modeller som avses användas i dagligt ingenjörsarbete för livstidsbedömningar av vattenbyggnadskonstruktioner behöver förenklas. Scan-Based Near-Field Acoustical Holography on Partially Correlated Sources

Scan-based near-field acoustical holography (NAH) is applied to partially correlated sources. Partial field decomposition via the virtual coherence method is used to implement the scan-based NAH. The background and theory of these methods are developed. Multiple stationary reference microphones are required for the partial field decomposition. Guidelines for reference microphone placement in the literature thus far have been limited. Improved guidelines for reference microphones are given after the results of two sets of experiments. The first set involves discrete, partially correlated sources, both physical and numerical. The second set of experiments is strictly numerical and involves continuous sources. Fewer microphones are required for partially correlated sources as compared to completely uncorrelated sources. Reference microphone number is found to be more critical to reducing holography reconstruction errors than is placement or location. For the continuous results, an appropriate figure of merit is created: reference microphones per coherence length. Based upon the definition of coherence length, two reference microphones per coherence length are required to minimize reconstruction error. Further practical reference microphone guidelines are given. These guidelines are to assist in preparing for a full-scale application of scan-based near-field acoustical holography to a military aircraft jet.

Autonomous UAV Path Planning using RSS signals in Search and Rescue Operations

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a promising technology in search and rescue operations (SAR). UAVs have the ability to provide more timely localization, thus decreasing the crucial duration of SAR operations. Previous work have demonstrated proof-of-concept in regard to localizing missing people by utilizing received signal strength (RSS) and UAVs. The localization system is based on the assumption that the missing person wears an enabled smartphone whose Wi-Fi signal can be intercepted. This thesis proposes a two-staged path planner for UAVs, utilizing RSS-signals and an initial belief regarding the missing person's location. The objective of the first stage is to locate an RSS-signal. By dividing the search area into grids, a hierarchical solution based on several Markov decision processes (MDPs) can be formulated which takes different areas probabilities into consideration. The objective of the second stage is to isolate the RSS-signal and provide a location estimate. The environment is deemed to be partially observable, and the problem is formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP). Two different filters, a point mass filter (PMF) and a particle filter (PF), are evaluated in regard to their ability to correctly estimate the state of the environment. The state of the environment then acts as input to a deep Q-network (DQN) which selects appropriate actions for the UAV. Thus, the DQN becomes a path planner for the UAV and the trajectory it generates is compared to trajectories generated by, among others, a greedy-policy.  Results for Stage 1 demonstrate that the path generated by the MDPs prioritizes areas with higher probability, and intuitively seems very reasonable. The results also illustrate potential drawbacks with a hierarchical solution, which potentially can be addressed by considering more factors into the problem. Simulation results for Stage 2 show that both a PMF and a PF can successfully be used to estimate the state of the environment and provide an accurate localization estimate. The PMF generated slightly more accurate estimations compared to the PF. The DQN is successful in isolating the missing person's probable location, by relatively few actions. However, it only performs marginally better than the greedy policy, indicating that it may be a complicated solution to a simpler problem.

Innocence and experience: Two approaches to teaching reading to L2 learners

Today Swedish society is surrounded by the English language, more so the importance to know how to read English is therefore essential. Students in consequence need the support from teachers to find suitable strategies to master their reading.This degree project’s aim is to find out if teachers use different methods to teach reading, and if so, why. This paper will present the reader with the theories and literature on the definition of reading strategies. Initially, various researchers will be present the two most commonly used strategies, the cognitive and the metacognitive. Although different researcher claim different This study is based on interviews with two teachers in elementary school, grade 4-6. The results and conclusion of this study is that the combination of different methods and the teachers’ adaption to each class and individual is what provides the students with the confidence to learn. Not only does this make it easier for the students to reach the requirements set for them, but this also gives them a willingness to learn. Furthermore, the study provides information on if the teachers working experience does have an impact on the methods they using when teaching L2 learners reading strategies.

Partially Parabolic Wind Turbine Flow Modelling

Climate change is an evermore urging existential treat to the human enterprise. Mean temperature and greenhouse gas emissions have in-creased exponentially since the industrial revolution. But solutions are also mushrooming with exponential pace. Renewable energy technologies, such as wind and solar power, are deployed like never before and their costs have decreased significantly. In order to allow for further transformation of the energy system these technologies must be refined and optimised. In wind energy one important field with high potential of refinement is aerodynamics. The aerodynamics of wind turbines constitutes one challenging research frontier in aerodynamics today.   In this study, a novel approach for calculating wind turbine flow is developed. The approach is based on the partially parabolic Navier-Stokes equations, which can be solved computationally with higher efficiency as compared to the fully elliptic version. The modelling of wind turbine thrust is done using actuator-disk theory and the torque is modelled by application of the Joukowsky rotor. A validation of the developed model and force implementation is conducted using four different validation cases.   In order to provide value for industrial wind energy projects, the model must be extended to account for turbulence (and terrain in case of onshore projects). Possible candidates for turbulence modelling are parabolic k-ε and explicit Reynolds stress turbulence models. The terrain could possibly be incorporated consistently with the used projection method by altering the finite difference grid layout.

Leveraging Help Requests In Pomdp Intelligent Tutors

Intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) are computer programs that model individual learners and adapt instruction to help each learner differently. One way ITSs differ from human tutors is that few ITSs give learners a way to ask questions. When learners can ask for help, their questions have the potential to improve learning directly and also act as a new source of model data to help the ITS personalize instruction. Inquiry modeling gives ITSs the ability to answer learner questions and refine their learner models with an inexpensive new input channel. In order to support inquiry modeling, an advanced planning formalism is applied to ITS learner modeling. Partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDPs) differ from more widely used ITS architectures because they can plan complex action sequences in uncertain situations with machine learning. Tractability issues have previously precluded POMDP use in ITS models. This dissertation introduces two improvements, priority queues and observation chains, to make POMDPs scale well and encompass the large problem sizes that real-world ITSs must confront. A new ITS was created to support trainees practicing a military task in a virtual environment. The development of the Inquiry Modeling POMDP Adaptive Trainer (IMP) began with multiple formative studies on human and simulated learners that explored inquiry modeling and POMDPs in intelligent tutoring. The studies suggest the new POMDP representations will be effective in ITS domains having certain common characteristics. iv Finally, a summative study evaluated IMP’s ability to train volunteers in specific practice scenarios. IMP users achieved post-training scores averaging up to 4.5 times higher than users who practiced without support and up to twice as high as trainees who used an ablated version of IMP with no inquiry modeling. IMP’s implementation and evaluation helped explore questions about how inquiry modeling and POMDP ITSs work, while empirically demonstrating their efficacy

CLIENT-SIDE CACHING: REDUCING SERVER LOAD AND LATENCY IN A NETWORK TRAFFIC ANALYSIS TOOL

Caching is a fundamental technique widely used in the field of computing to reduce network traffic, server load, and latency. Storing frequently accessed data in a high-speed cache layer can make future requests process faster by involving fewer system components when generating and serving the response. Kalix is a software product that demands a caching solution since it faces latency and is frequently processing partially repeated queries. However, a cache does not guarantee improved performance, which is why the main problems of caching are: determining what content to cache, when to insert or remove cache content, implementing the caching logic, and deciding where to store the cache efficiently. Therefore, this paper theoretically investigates where a cache solution should be implemented within the Kalix system architecture to decrease latency and server load, and evaluates the subsequent cache implementation experimentally. As a result, a client-side cache is implemented which decreases the latency of Kalix by up to 74%, while reducing the I/O load and memory utilization on the server by 98%. The reason for the decrease is that the cache in the client can directly serve the majority of the content, allowing the servers of Kalix to do substantially fewer computations. The evaluation acts as a recommendation for the company behindKalix, Polystar, as to if a cache is beneficial and where the cache can efficiently be deployed, and this paper gives valuable insights into the decision-making of cache placement. Concludingly, implementing the cache positively impacts the Kalix user experience.
