A Case Study on An Experienced Elementary Teacher¡¦s Practices in Mathematical Classroom

Chiang, Feng-Kuang 29 July 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to investigate teaching strategies and teaching reflections of an experienced elementary teacher in the mathematical classroom. This study explored the changing process of students¡¦ learning attitudes toward mathematics. This research adopted qualitative research methods as a main means of inquiry and used quantitative questionnaires as a supplement means of inquiry. Researcher had inquired by observations, in-depth interviews, video recordings, document data collections and the pre-post questionnaire survey during one semester. This research used triangulation methods, including methodological triangulation, data triangulation, and investigator triangulation. The research concludes as follows: 1.The experienced teacher delivered the class mainly by lectures and questions, and added other multi-teaching strategies in accordance to the contents of the courses. 2.The experienced teacher has specific steps in mathematical classes: help students calm down

(1998) in mathematics, to verify in their trajectory, if the time determines changes in their daily doings and in the level of awareness that these professionals have in their theoretical-practical articulation. This study aimed also to characterize the experienced teacher that emerges from the practice of knowledge amalgamated in everyday experience, from their early career teachers. This research, based on a phenomenological approach, was carried out in three public schools in a municipality in the state of Rondônia. The participants were 04 mathematics teachers from sixth to the ninth grade of elementary school, two of those teachers with more seniority, and two with less time. Data were collected through the following instruments: professional biography built from verbal deposition, participant observation of 71 lessons, and semi-structured interview derived from the analysis of their professional biographies. The analysis of data showed the influence of time, both the reservoir of knowledge from experience in setting up the experienced teacher in mathematics. It was found also that the phases of the teaching profession - between stages of consolidation of his career, when you have the formation of a professional identity, and subsequent phases until the divestment - would be characterized as the zone of formation of the experienced teachers in mathematics. Among the diversification vs. questioning, serenity and emotional distance vs conservatism, crises and identity "re-positions" would characterize the abilities of management of content and management of classroom of the experienced professor in mathematics. Finally, we have noted that the experienced teacher does not match the phase of disinvestment... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Innocence and experience: Two approaches to teaching reading to L2 learners

Abu Zarour, Lina, Diop, Dieynaba January 2017 (has links)
Today Swedish society is surrounded by the English language, more so the importance to know how to read English is therefore essential. Students in consequence need the support from teachers to find suitable strategies to master their reading. This degree project’s aim is to find out if teachers use different methods to teach reading, and if so, why. This paper will present the reader with the theories and literature on the definition of reading strategies. Initially, various researchers will be present the two most commonly used strategies, the cognitive and the metacognitive. Although different researcher claim different This study is based on interviews with two teachers in elementary school, grade 4-6. The results and conclusion of this study is that the combination of different methods and the teachers’ adaption to each class and individual is what provides the students with the confidence to learn. Not only does this make it easier for the students to reach the requirements set for them, but this also gives them a willingness to learn. Furthermore, the study provides information on if the teachers working experience does have an impact on the methods they using when teaching L2 learners reading strategies.

TRANSFORMATIVE PARTICIPATION IN A PROFESSIONAL COMMUNITY: A HOLISTIC CASE STUDY OF ONE EXPERIENCED TEACHER’S EVOLVING PRACTICE

Zeidler-Watters, Kim 01 January 2015 (has links)
This descriptive, holistic, single case study focuses on how an experienced teacher with 21 years of teaching was able to negotiate participation in a community of practice (CoP). The study applies Wenger’s (1998) Community of Practice framework as a lens through which to gain insight into the subject’s professional transformation. Wenger’s multilayered theoretical approach, including the four components of his social learning model, provides a common language to describe participation. The specific research questions that frame this inquiry are: 1) How did an experienced secondary mathematics teacher, involved in an ongoing and dual-faceted professional development project, negotiate meaningful participation in a community of practice? 2) How did the kinds of participation in which she chose to engage affect her professionally? and, 3) How did her classroom practice change? Findings from the study include: 1) Wenger’s Stages of Development (potential, coalescing, active, dispersed and memorable) for a CoP were in evidence in this teacher’s participatory experiences. 2) Internal and external factors worked in concert to support transformed practice. 3) The tension between experience and competence is an important factor when thinking about the difference between an expert and experienced teacher. 4) The case subject negotiated her participation through intellectual partnerships formed through the interaction with her Peer CoP and educational experts and researchers—an example of legitimate participation in authentic professional activities at a level quite different from most “teacher professional development” activities. The evolving shared repertoire of changed mathematical instructional practices was tangible evidence of transformative interactions. These findings indicate that a viable, robust CoP can be stimulated through external scaffolding and coordination of learning activities in combination with a joint enterprise of growth-minded professionals. The data provide insight into the professional transformation that occurred within the case teacher’s practice as she enacted the new, shared repertoire with students in her classroom. The new repertoire resulted in improved student learning not just during her active involvement in the CoP but after the community disperses, in a penultimate stage of a CoP described by Wenger (1998), suggesting that the results and transformed practice can be sustained.

With a closer look at literacy practices in the 1st grade of elementary school, this study portrayed the performance of two literacy teachers with different teaching times. For this purpose, the present work aims to investigate and analyze literacy practices carried out by a beginner teacher and an experienced teacher, considering the elements of the management of subject and class present in the interaction of literacy classes. The theoretical framework was based on authors such as Gimeno Sacristán and Gauthier underlying the teaching practice, while Huberman, Gonçalves, Marcelo Garcia, Guarnieri and Lima brought subsidies to address the stages of teaching and literacy practices were based on studies by Soares and Carvalho. The qualitative research, in an empirical basis, was developed in a public school in the city of São Paulo state, guided by the following problems: How the beginner and experienced literacy teachers perform their literacy practices in the early years of elementary school? What are the elements of the management of subject and class that are present in the interaction of literacy classes? It was used as data collection instruments the class observation of a beginner and an experienced teacher for a period of three months and held a semi-structured interview. Data were organized into three main themes: The nature of the literacy process; The management of subject and the significant aspects of literacy; The management of the class and style of literacy. From a comparative analysis, the results revealed that the teaching time is up influenced in directing the management of the subject, but it is not a determining factor in class management, and between beginner literacy practices and experienced for over differences, than similarities. It was noted how complex is the theme of literacy, which confirms the hypothesis in this research, that is, both teachers had difficulties to teach literacy. In conclusion, whether beginner or experienced teacher, there must be commitment to their choices, behavior and management of teaching, because you can not accept improvisation and attempts in the literacy process.
