Interface of music and politica: versions of patriotic consciousness in Zimbabwean music, 1970-2015

Marongedze, Reggemore 01 1900 (has links)
Music is an inviolable imaginative litmus diagnosis on a constellation of ideational and conceptual contestations which elicit mutually exclusive and inclusive versions of patriotic consciousness in the Zimbabwean polity. The study specifically analyses the renditions of patriotic consciousness as expressed through selected musical compositions in Shona, Ndebele and English conceptualised as Zimbabwe-centred musical texts. It unfurls in the context of the interplay between music and politics in which music is seen as intricately interwoven with national politics causing shifts of realities. The research approaches and conceptualises patriotic consciousness as a heuristic construct and a measure of development that constitutes an instrument for ideological and conceptual contestations in specific political argumentative settings within the period 1970 to 2015. It deploys the critical tenets of Afrocentricity and the Socio-semantic theory of music to advance the contention that patriotic consciousness as a concept for political analysis enables the criticism and explanation of existing rival sentiments, different wants, competing needs and opposing interests in the Zimbabwean polity. Musicians who contribute to Zimbabwe-centred musical texts also (un)consciously become part of the ideological and conceptual battlefield for political legitimacy. The study pays attention to the lyrics’ content, the historical epoch from which the lyrics respond to and ideological influences embedded in the lyrics, which potentially trigger ideational and conceptual clashes. It engages the song lyrics of musicians, whose music constitute Zimbabwe-centred musical texts, as a mode of art that (in)directly conveys political ideas, identities and interests on the notion of love and object of allegiance in national politics thereby engaging in ideational and conceptual contestations. / Linguistics and Modern Languages

Social movements in Colombian democracy (2010-2016): Patriotic March, a political or social movement?

Oliveira, Amanda Caroline Harumy 13 November 2018 (has links)
The paper aims to investigate the current democratic aspects of Colombia, through the analysis of social movements. To understand this context, this dissertation was dedicated to a structural analysis, based on theories of democracy and social movements, and a conjunctural analysis, through a specific case study of social movements. The temporal cut is the beginning of the administration of Juan Manoel Santos in 2010, until 2016, in which important experiences of social movements emerged. The creation of the Patriotic March in 2012, had great national projection. The moviment defined itself as a political and social movement. The question guiding this investigation is whether the definition of motion is legitimate. Through a bibliographical review and interview work, information was collected to understand the character of the movement in the Colombian context. The Patriotic March served as an important articulator of several Colombian social movements, around a specific political theme: defense for peace, proposing a political negotiation for the end of the Colombian armed conflict. By characterizing the creation of the movement, its content and format, it was possible to see that it was a political and social movement that succeeded in reconciling the specific political demands of the movement and the characteristics and functions of the social movement.

Patriotic and nationalistic song in Australia to 1919: a study of the popular sheet music genre

Binns, Georgina Mary January 1988 (has links)
Since European settlement of Australia, patriotic and nationalistic songs have provided entertainment and given an emotional outlet to the people of Australia. Due to their largely printed form, a significant proportion of these songs is still extant. The songs form a distinct subset of the larger popular song tradition. / This thesis documents and analyses all known patriotic and nationalistic songs written and published in sheet music form to the close of World War One. This end date has been determined because it represents a peak in this genre and also signals a radical shift in direction for popular songs with the advent of widespread music recording and broadcasting. / Distinct historical events (e.g. the Sudan conflict, Boer War, and First World War) or themes (e.g. military threats, the rising nationalism leading to Federation of Australian colonies) which influenced or inspired songs in this genre will be discussed. Songs are grouped in distinct chronological or thematic samples. The songs are analysed in this thematic context and then treated using more conventional musicological techniques. The often conflicting ideals of patriotism and nationalism are discussed using the songs as a reflection of contemporary opinion.

Becoming the vanguard: children, the Young Pioneers, and the Soviet state in the Great Patriotic War

03 September 2009 (has links)
This dissertation combines institutional history and social analysis to provide a more nuanced depiction of the Soviet experience in the Great Patriotic War, a portrait which considers the experience of children, the state’s expectations of children, and an exploration of the institution responsible for connecting child and state, the V.I. Lenin All-Union Pioneer Organization. It argues that the state’s expectations for children during the Great Patriotic War were issued primarily in order to save the floundering Young Pioneer organization. Though the Pioneers were supposed to lead children in all sorts of tasks and behaviors – a role they had fulfilled since their inception in 1922 – the organization nearly collapsed under the strain of wartime conditions in the early years of the war. In order to resurrect its image and secure its rightful place in the vanguard of children, the Pioneers launched a concerted effort to reassert its leadership. Language, values, and models of heroism were revamped to more accurately reflect the war. The internalization of these standards by children supported the Pioneers’ claim to leadership. Campaigns of action were launched to allow the Pioneers to claim ownership of children’s accomplishments. To guarantee success, the organization drew its ideas from preexisting activities – activities children were already doing in 1941-42, largely on local initiative. What had been conceived of and run as a prescriptive organization for two decades became a descriptive organization, subsuming all appropriate acts into the task of reestablishing the Pioneers at the forefront of Soviet childhood. This suggests that children had far more agency than previously assumed, and their many roles complicate the typical “child-victim” normally associated with the Great Patriotic War and its propaganda. The post-Stalingrad turnaround allowed the Pioneers the opportunity to reassert themselves. Becoming the vanguard, the organization established the foundations for a Pioneer-led heroism storied in Soviet history. Though internal problems continued to dog the Pioneers for years, the foundational story was established in the latter years of the war. Beginning in 1943, the organization began writing itself into the post-war victory narrative, alleging successful leadership among children and ignoring the near-catastrophe they had averted.

The influence of national identity activation on consumer responses to patriotic Ads : Caucasian vs. Asian Americans

Yoo, Jin Young, 1977- 24 February 2014 (has links)
This dissertation study examined how the activation of national identity influences consumer evaluations of ads using patriotic appeals. Specifically, this study proposed that (1) priming of national identity through the cues within media-context would activate consumers’ national identity, making it momentarily salient, and this increased national identity salience, in turn, would affect consumer responses to the ads using patriotic themes; and (2) the impact of national identity salience on evaluations of patriotic ads among ethnic minority consumers (i.e., Asian Americans) would be different from that among majority consumers (i.e., Caucasian Americans). As expected, findings from this study showed that activating consumers’ national identity through a national identity prime (i.e., a news story about a national event) led to favorable responses to the ads featuring patriotic themes. Further, results of this study indicated that the effect of national identity salience on increasing evaluations of ads using patriotic themes was significantly stronger for ethnic minority consumers than was for majority consumers. / text

From the perspective of the discursive semiotics, the main of this study is comprehend how the patriotic anthems are organized and which textual and discursive strategies are used to mobilize the sensitive and to incited the national identity. In Brazil, there are different anthems to symbolize the nation, the states and the municipalities; hence we chose the patriotic anthems that represent each segment in order to conduct a comparative study. They are: the Brazilian National Anthem and the Brazilian Flag Anthem, representing the national ones, the Anthem of São Paulo (state), and the municipal anthems of Araraquara and São Carlos. The selected anthems as corpus allow verifying through genre and style intersection, the discursive strategic similarities, which through the saying; and mainly, through the way of saying, can captivate the enunciatee whose involvement and identification are the result of a meaning effect. Thus, the research apprehends the meaning construction, analyzing the utterances that, covered with themes and figures, evoke the jingoism and the patriotic pride and show a believing, a wanting and a having-to-be citizen. Among the results of the research, contrast the identification of the enunciatee with the anthems discourse, that the manipulation of the sensitive is efficient way to keeping a patriotic identity. / FAPESP: 2015/14341-0

Majluf, Natalia 12 April 2018 (has links)
This essay proposes to explore the visual expressions of political power during the crisis of independence, in the transition from the colonial monarchical system toward the constitution of the new South American republics. We shall take as our point of departure the depersonalization of power which accompanied the fall of the king and explore the different materializations of the modernnation-state and the uncertain place which heroes’ portrait occupied in the new republican symbolic cosmos.
