Hjältar med låg lön : En studie om en ”yrkessåpas” påverkan på personalens motivation

Sköld, Diana January 2008 (has links)

The amount of television entertainment of the character “reality program series” has increased on Swedish television, because of this it could be generally considered that television entertainment is in a “reality series era”. In recent years so called “work soaps” have become very popular. This is a television series, where through the TV screen; we have the possibility to view ordinary people in their daily lives and often dramatic work. Uppsala inhabitants can be proud of the series”Sjukhuset” about a hospital, where TV cameras follow several professionals in their daily work at their hospital. I seek in this study to ascertain how the personnel at this hospital are affected by the increased attention that the television program series generates. I have in my study centred interest into whether the increased attention has affected the nurse’s motivation in their work. The purpose with this study is to see whether the extra attention to their profession and workplace generated by the TV3 television program has affected the motivation of the hospital personnel. My interest has been focused on both the people that took part and even those who were not directly involved in the program. The method of data collecting was an interview study, which included eight registered nurses, two of which have played significant roles during the TV series. The point of departure focused on the following questions:

How do the nurses feel the TV series has affected them.

To what extent has the nurse’s motivation for work has been affected by the attention their professional group has received in the TV series.

To what extent has the nurse’s motivation for work been affected by the attention their work place has received in the TV series.

The results of the interviews showed that the informants reported that they were affected to a very limited extent by the TV series. Neither was I able to find any clear connection between the motivation of the informants and the effects upon them that the attention that the TV programs gave them or their colleagues at their workplace. Even though the interviews did not show a clear connection between motivation and the TV programs I have from the answers to my interviews sensed that the personnel’s motivation has been negatively affected. During conversations with the informants a picture developed of how they interpret motivation in relation to their employment situation. As a result a great deal of the study has focused on interpretations and answers that I did not initially expect or intend studying. It became clear that although the personnel were generally happy with their work they thought that their pay and conditions of employment left much to be desired. Concern over cut backs, disappointment over the inadequate pay structure and a feeling of impotence in a large organisation were often recurring comments in the interview narratives. The TV programs positive affect was overshadowed, and the invariable configuration emanating from the interviews was that the personnel believed that the TV program gave a glorified picture of the reality they experienced in their daily work. My final analysis of the results of the study is that the TV programs perhaps would have affected the personnel and their motivation in a more positive direction if it wasn’t for the negative feelings and experiences that the personnel had for their work situation.
