The exploitability of pegmatite deposits in the lower Orange River area (Vioolsdrif - Henkries - Steinkopf)

Minnaar, Hendrik 21 February 2007 (has links)
This study aims to investigate the exploitability of the pegmatite deposits in the lower Orange River area, situated between the settlements of Vioolsdrif, Henkries and Steinkopf in the Northern Province, in the light of current methods of financial analysis. A summary of the prevailing ore deposit model and a description of the geology are presented, and a financial analysis is undertaken taking into account the resources, current market conditions, and the legal requirements associated with a mining venture on the pegmatite bodies. The most acceptable ore deposit model for the formation of pegmatites currently presents the pegmatite body as the final stage of crystallization of a cooling magma (Cerny, 1998a). Recent studies suggest that the crystallization of the pegmatite occur at an unexpectedly fast rate by the working of undercooling, in which the rate of cooling exceeds the rate of crystallization (London, 2005). The pegmatites of the study area are mostly developed in granites of the Vioolsdrif Suite, in a post-orogenic tectonic setting and in many respects, fit well into the model of Ginsburg et al. (1979). Although resources are difficult to estimate, it can be said that individual pegmatite bodies in the study area host reserves of up to 50 Mt of pegmatite ore. The markets for feldspar, currently the primary commodity in pegmatites, show an increase in price and a positive outlook for the future. Legal requirements (licensing) are rigorous, under the new Act even more so than under the old, especially with regard to environmental issues. A financial analysis suggests that, although mining operations on pegmatite bodies are highly sensitive to changes in commodity prices, revenue and fuel-related expenses, they are feasible under the current market conditions. Zebrakop pegmatite is identified in this study as a potential target for the exploitation of a homogeneous pegmatite, coupled with the necessary development of bulk mining methods and a beneficiation plant. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Geology / Unrestricted

Petrogenesis of the Spruce Pine pegmatites, North Carolina

Wood, Patricia Ann 22 August 2008 (has links)
Pegmatites in the Spruce Pine district, North Carolina, are an example of muscovite class pegmatites that were derived from differentiation of a magma. There are eight granodiorite plutons in the Spruce Pine area ranging in size from 1 to 20 square kilometers that contain and are surrounded by hundreds of pegmatites. The granodiorite and the pegmatites are mineralogically and chemically identical, indicating that they formed from a common magma. The pegmatites appear to have formed in the granodiorite, becoming larger and more abundant near the margins of the plutons before intruding into the surrounding country rock. Major and trace element data from muscovite plotted on a map of the area reveal a systematic regional trend where either the highest or lowest concentrations occur along a central northeast-trending belt in the Spruce Pine district, with the concentration either decreasing or increasing, respectively, to the northwest and southeast. Similarly, more calcic plagioclase is located in the same central portion of the district, whereas more sodic plagioclase is found at the margins of the district. These regular variations in mineral chemistry are the result of fractionation of the pegmatites away from the core of a common magmatic source. K-feldspar, garnet, beryl and tourmaline also have similar regional trends. Although the chemical core of the area revealed by the mineral chemistry does not correspond to an exposure of granodiorite, it may correspond to the core of a larger plutonic body that has not been completely exposed by erosion. Variations in granodiorite texture may reflect zoning within this larger magmatic body. The systematic regional variations in the major and trace element chemistry of minerals as well as the relationship between the granodiorite and the pegmatites support the conclusion that the Spruce Pine pegmatites were derived from differentiation of the granodiorite magma. / Master of Science

Ronchi, Fernanda Claas January 2017 (has links)
We study the structural control of pegmatites (F-REE-Li vein-type granite pegmatite) associated to the albite-enriched granite facies (AEG) of the Madeira A-type granite (~1.83 Ga). This facies corresponds to the Madeira world-class Sn-Nb-Ta-F (cryolite) deposit at the Pitinga mine. These REE-rich pegmatites (xenotime and gagarinite), presently exploited together with the disseminated ore, have potential to explotation by selective mining. They have a common geometric arrangement and share a same mineralogy, therefore they all originate from the same source. They have the same mineralogical composition of the host rock and their emplacement occurred in the parental rock itself. The geometric arrangement of the pegmatites is settled by contractional brittle structures (reverse faults, imbrication fans and horses). The reverse fault planes (~N320/60SW) were essentially the conduits for the fluid. The preferential sites for the pegmatites bodies were the horizontal tensile fractures. The well-marked geometric arrangement of the tectonic structures and the fact that there are also reverse faults planes without pegmatites show that the fractures that host the pegmatites were not formed by the fluid pressure. The orientation of the contractional structures in the AEG indicates a transport from SW to NE. With reduced surface dimensions, the AEG cooled fast, however its location in the cold upper crust and the low solidus temperature allowed pegmatites formation. At the structural level of the studied pegmatites, when these veins positioned, the AEG was crystallized in a position above the critical crustal depth, where minimum normal stress is vertical.

En LA-ICP-MS analys av kvarts från granitpegmatiter från Bergby-Hamrångeområdet / A LA-ICP-MS Analysis of Quartz From Granite Pegmatites From the Bergby-Hamrånge Area

Eriksson, Rikard January 2024 (has links)
The trace element concentration in pole samples of quartz from the Bergby-Hamrånge area has been analyzed by LA-ICP-MS. The trace element concentration in quartz from simple pegmatites and LCT-pegmatites has been analyzed and recorded concentrations for 23 different isotopes. Concentrations of Al27, Ti49, Li7, Rb85 and B11 at 84 sample points have been plotted in biaxial graphs. Tertiary diagrams of Al/10-Li-Ti and Ti-Al/10-Rb*50 have been compiled and in these, fields for LCT-pegmatites have been highlighted based on data from Müller et al. (2021). The report demands no previous knowledge of LA-ICP-MS to be understood. The purpose of the investigation was to answer, 1) If quartz samples from Bergby-Hamrånge can be classified as ultrapure quartz and 2) To discuss the trace element concentrations and investigate alternative uses for quartz that is not ultrapure.

Municipalities of Parelhas and Equador are the main responsible for the production of feldspar, quartz, kaolin and granite. The ceramic industries are always in search of competitiveness by investing in new products or improving existing techniques. The stoneware is a type of pottery that stands in the market because it presents technical and aesthetic characteristics superior to other existing products. Characteristics of the raw materials initially obtained with chemical analysis and mineralogical analysis are crucial in getting a product that satisfies the conditions in a manufacturing process and is, in principle, directly related to the firing cycle. This research aimed at developing new formulations for the mass production of ceramic stoneware. The raw materials initially characterized were feldspar, quartz, kaolin and granite. As part of the research was developed at the University of Aveiro, in Portugal, we used two clays used in the production of Portuguese ceramics. The raw material Brazilian and Portuguese and the final product, both in Portugal and Brazil, were analyzed for X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, granulometric analysis, dilatometric analysis, thermal analysis and analysis of scanning electron microscopy (MEV). The specimens prepared at the University of Aveiro (DECV) were sintered at 10000C and 12000C and the specimens prepared in UFRN were sintered at 10000C, 10500C, 11000C, 11500C, 12000C, 12500C and 13000C, but the best results and demonstrating the presence of the mineral mullite were at temperatures of 12000C, 12500C and 13000C. The results showed that the granite waste used may be considered raw material of excellent quality for use in the ceramic industry and coating floors and more accurately by the industry of stoneware. Physical and mechanical tests conducted on samples of the formulations F01 and F02 developed in UFRN showed a water absorption and mechanical strength suitable for the stoneware / No estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil, as jazidas mais expressivas na produ??o de minerais de pegmatito e granito est?o na regi?o do Serid?. / Abstract: Reflectance spectroscopy (ER), Terra/ASTER and EO-1/Hyperion images, and ground and aerial gamma ray data were employed for mineral characterization of pegmatites and pegmatitic granites in the southern portion of the BPP. ER results allowed to characterize mineral phases and mixtures of minerals including kaolinite, illite/sericite, muscovite and turmaline (schorl) in homogeneous pegmatites. Principal component analysis were applied to Terra/ASTER data using the Crósta techique, resulting in a map exhibiting the main mineralogy of homogeneous and heterogeneous pegmatites, as well as quartzites of the Equador Fm. biotite schists of the Serido Fm. and iron-rich superficial deposits. The Alto do Giz pegmatite was selected for a detailed study and mineral phases comprising kaolinite, muscovite, illite/sericite, Na- and Li-bearing micas, cookeite and tourmaline were recognized, allowing to define a lLi-rich zone (cookeite+lepidolite) around nuclei N2 and N3 and to establish the internal zoning of the pegmatite. Based on these results we proposed its classification as a complex-type pegmatite, of the spodumene sub-class. Furthermore, at least three evolution stages have been establish for Alto do Giz: an early stage represented by the primary crystallization of spodumene, followed by hydrothermal alteration that originated cookeite, and later stage comprising intense kaolinization originated from hydrothermal and/or supergenic processes. The analysis and spectral classification of the EO-1 Hyperion data allowed to map the spatial distribution of the distinct zones, based on the occurrence of key minerals such as muscovite, kaolinite, and Na-bearing mica. Using the airborne gamma ray data of the Seridó Aerogeophysical Project, reprocessed and reinterpreted using modern techniques, and using ground gamma data as a support, it was possible to distinguish quartzites from the north and south portions of the BPP based on their distinctive Th contents and on the eTh/K ratio, as well as to characterize pegmatitic granites using the ratios eU/eTh and eU/eK. Th and eTh/K images allowed the identification of metarenites and metaconglomerates bearing significative amounts of heavy minerals, thus revealing a new type of mineralization in the Serido Belt. Semi-quantitative scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses revealed up to 79.4% of ThO2 and 87.7% of REE in monazites; up to 99.2% of TiO2 in rutile and up to 1.81% of HfO2 in zircon. These results indicated the potential of the methodology employed in this work for the characterization of pegmatitic granites and pegmatites in the Borborema Pegmatitic Province (BPP) using low spatial resolution airborne geophysical data collected decades ago. The detailed study of the Galo Branco granite with ground gamma ray data and radiometric and ICP-MS laboratory analysis showed that this granite has U grades of 0.47 ppm to 7.8 ppm, Th between 0.1 ppm and 21.0 ppm and K between 2.00% e 5.24%. These concentrations are irregularly distributed suggesting mineralogical changes in contents and concentration of accessory minerals during magmatic crystallization and differentiation stages of this granite. The occurrence of pegmatites dikes intruding the quartzites to the south of the Galo Branco granite was revealed by the eUe/Th ratio since they are relatively enriched in uranium. / Doutorado / Geologia e Recursos Naturais / Doutor em Geociências

This study focuses on isotopic composition of molybdenite (MoS₂) in order to decipher possible links between occurrence type, mineralizing processes, ages and observed δMo variations. A data base (n=391) have been built thanks to data from this study and data from literature allowing to run solid statistics on Mo isotopic composition of MoS₂. Different occurrence types have been investigated (granite, pegmatite, greisens, perigranitic vein, porphyry deposit, skarn, IOCG, polymetallic epithermal vein and alpine-type fissure vein). All δ₉₈Mo have been normalized to NIST3134 (δ₉₈MoNIST(NIST) = 0‰). The distribution of all data is Gaussian with a mean value of 0.04±1.04‰ (2σ). δ₉₈MoNIST mean values are higher for alpine-type fissure vein, greisens and perigranitic vein than for skarn, granite and porphyry deposit. These last occurrence types crystallize at higher temperature. For granite-related occurrences, δ₉₈MoNIST of granite is lower than δ₉₈MoNIST of pegmatite and perigranitic vein. This suggests an influence of temperature on Mo isotopic fractionation. Intra-occurrence variations have been evidenced. The intra-occurrence variations are not depending of the occurrence type. δ₉₈MoNIST of the Azegour skarn vary on large range of 1.02‰. Rayleigh fractionation is proposed as principal fractionation process. S and Pb isotopic analyses suggest a contribution of hosting volcano-sedimentary series. δ₉₈MoNIST of Ploumanac’h pegmatite vary on a narrow range of 0.22‰. S and Pb isotopic analyses suggest a strong crustal contribution in magmas genesis.
