City Walls Of Istanbul:an Analysis Of Place-making In The Urban ContextAkyol, Selin Eda 01 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to analyse the Istanbul Historical Peninsula city walls under the framework of place-making. This study focuses on proposing a way of looking for the place identity of walls upon the dialect of the times, and the dialogue of physical configurations and cognitive imaginaries.
The present wall front is studied and the frequently repeating patterns on this fabric are pointed out throughout the understanding which incorporates both the geographical and spatial imagination. As the identity of places are constituted over the dialectical links between physical setting, activities and meanings, the attempt of the thesis is to inquire the place virtue, to comprehend what city walls propose and which meanings are produced over these city walls.
The value and the uniqueness of the city walls which has a defining impact on the place-making process of Historical Peninsula is acknowledged pointing out to the character of the place. Based on the findings of the thesis, collaboration of diverse disciplines is suggested for future projections in order to appreciate the sense of place and to use the knowledge of place-making while the city walls are brought to the design table of the planners.

Behavior and movement of southern right whales: effects of boats and swimmersLundquist, David Jeffrey 17 September 2007 (has links)
Guidelines for sustainable swim-with tourism for large whales are not welldeveloped,
as researchers have focused on delphinids. Nations that signed the
Convention on Biological Diversity at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 are
obligated to consider sustainable use principles when allowing new ecotourism
activities, yet the fast-growing worldwide swim-with-whales industry is lacking the
research needed to create successful management guidelines that can be implemented by
local communities. From September to November of 2005 and July to October of 2006,
I collected movement and behavioral state data for southern right whales in proximity of
swimmers at PenÃÂnsula Valdés, Argentina. Whales were observed before, during, and
after a series of directed interactions with swimmers. I quantified the behavioral and
movement effects relative to group composition of whales (mother/calf pairs, juveniles
or adult/mixed groups) and activity level of swimmers.
Group composition had a significant effect on the response of whales to
swimmers. Swimmer activity level did not substantially affect the reaction of whales.
Resting and socializing activities significantly decreased and traveling activities
significantly increased when boats approached and when swimmers entered the water. Resting and socializing bout length in the presence of swimmers decreased to less than a
third of the length of bouts when swimmers were not present. Whales swam faster,
reoriented more often, and followed a less linear path during interactions. Effects were
greater for mother/calf pairs than juveniles, while mixed adult/juvenile groups showed
no significant changes in behavior or movement. The initial reaction of whales to the
approach of the boat and the entry of swimmers into the water was a good predictor of
the magnitude of effects on the behavior and movement patterns of the whale. Increased
levels of activity are a concern for the whales that are resting and not feeding in this
area. To provide quality resource management guidelines for this activity, additional
research is needed to determine long-term effects of boat and swimmer activities on the
behavior of whales. It is also important to obtain energetic data for right whales to
determine the magnitude of impacts.

Politics of depoliticisation : a re-assessment of the post-2001 restructuring of the state and economic policy making in TurkeyDönmez, Pınar E. January 2012 (has links)
The major motivation behind this thesis comes from an interest in the processes of depoliticisation and re-politicisation in economic management. The focus on the interaction between the national state and the global social relations positions the main problematic of the thesis within critical international political economy (IPE). This interaction is investigated in the context of the specific case study of Turkey. Given the fact that the existent literature on depoliticisation largely builds on the experiences of the advanced capitalist states and their managers, the thesis aims to contribute to this body of literature and assess the applicability of the conceptual framework in a different domestic political setting. On the other hand it aims to build on and contribute to the critiques of the existent literature on Turkey in the sense that the latter is often portrayed within an exceptional outlook and treated as a stand-alone case. The second chapter provides a critical overview of the literature on the conceptualisation of state and social relations in Turkey. The third chapter reviews the place of the state and the political and defines (de)politicisation not only as a governing strategy of the state managers to manage capitalist social relations but also in broader terms; as open-ended process in so far as its effects extend beyond the governmental realm. Chapter four proceeds to demonstrate the applicability of such a framework in the Turkish case through an evaluation of governing tactics and strategies in the post-WWII context. The subsequent three chapters explore the evolution of crisis and restructuring of social relations for the periods 1994-2001, 2002-2005 and 2006-present in an attempt to investigate the effects of the governing strategy and process in material and perceptional terms.

The conception of authority in pre-Islamic Arabia : its legitimacy and origin.Ruiz, Manuel. January 1971 (has links)
This thesis is an attempt to interpret the conception of authority that was predominant among the Central and Northern Arabs at the time immediately preceding the rise of Islam. Since that conception was not explicitly formulated, we have analyzed the role and influence of the different political and religious functionaries as well as the reactions of their "subjects" to their commands in order to discover the basis of legitimacy for that authority. As there exists an essential relationship between authority and society, we have presented the social and economic organization and the ideal values of the pre-Islamic Arabs which might have influenced their conception of authority. That is why we discuss the Bedouin and the urban settlements separately. As a possible origin and justification of authority, we discuss its connection with religion, in particular, whether in pre-Islamic times there ever existed a theocratic rulership. [...]

The relationship between an Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) literacy program and women's lives in Semi-urban context, in Cape PeninsulaBeauzac, Christolene Bernardine January 2010 (has links)

The research employed a qualitative research paradigm. The ethnographic approach was used to conduct the research. Data collection was done though various ethnographic techniques, classroom observation, in-depth interviews and document analysis. The population was 85 women who participated in a Adult Basic Education and Training programme in Eersterivier in the Cape Peninsula area a questionnaire was used to collect demographic information of the participants Data was analysed by thematic analysis and coded, categorised and discussed according to the aim and objectives of the study in relation to previous studies The main findings were why exploring the existing literacy practice women were depended on others for literacy assistance, which made them avoid literacy events and become vulnerable in this process to cope with the everyday life.
