Access to and awareness of further education on Eyre PeninsulaMulvihill, Michael J., n/a January 1981 (has links)
By using an interview survey of 30 randomly selected
residents of Port Lincoln and the same number of persons from a
country section of the Eyre Peninsula Community College region,
an attempt has been made to ascertain profiles of participants
and non-participants in adult education along with reasons for
non-participation. It was assumed that lack of awareness of
educational provision would be a major barrier to access and
so a significant part of the study was addressed to this
aspect.
The town of Port Lincoln was considered separately from
the rest of the Region because of the assumption that access
and awareness were likely to be at a lower level amongst those
persons in the more remote areas of the region.
Assumptions that underpinned the proposal were: that
Technical and Further Education was important, that
community awareness of T.A.F.E. was therefore desirable and
that barriers existed that precluded a significant section
of the community participating in these activities.

Data collection was done though various ethnographic techniques, classroom observation, in-depth interviews and document analysis. The population was 85 women who participated in a Adult Basic Education and Training programme in Eersterivier in the Cape Peninsula area a questionnaire was used to collect demographic information of the participants Data was analysed by thematic analysis and coded, categorised and discussed according to the aim and objectives of the study in relation to previous studies The main findings were why exploring the existing literacy practice women were depended on others for literacy assistance, which made them avoid literacy events and become vulnerable in this process to cope with the everyday life.</p>

The role of sustainable tourism in poverty alleviation in South Africa : a case study of the Spier tourism initiativeChifon, Godlove Ngek January 2010 (has links)
<p>In South Africa, poverty engendered by the apartheid regime has long been part of the fabric of the economy. Against this background of social marginalisation, material deprivation and individual vulnerability, tourism has over the years increasingly been mooted as a strategically important and lucrative sector that, if fully explored and exploited, would lead to sustained poverty alleviation in the Republic of South Africa. The central aim of this study was to establish whether tourism as evident in the Spier Tourism model is a sustainable poverty-reduction strategy. The specific objectives of this study were to examine the socio-economic impact of Spier tourism initiatives on its workers (previously disadvantaged individuals) and the local population, to assess the pro-poor tourism practices as implemented by Spier in relation to Rogerson&rsquo / s pro-poor approach, to identify the challenges that Spier is facing in its pro-poor tourism approach with respect to poverty reduction goals, to provide recommendations on how the challenges can be met most effectively and to examine how pro-poor tourism can be promoted and enhanced in South Africa. The study employed both the qualitative and quantitative research designs. Data were collected through different qualitative and quantitative techniques (in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, questionnaire). Summary findings indicate that Spier has positively contributed to the socio-economic improvement in the living standards (contribution to livelihood &ndash / increased income, enhanced health and food status), through job creation, improved education/healthcare, empowerment through training and skill development, investment in the corporate social responsibility. However, Spier is still grappling with challenges such as racial disputes, insufficient income of employees and unqualified staff to mention a few. This study makes several recommendations which are based on the findings.</p>

Esta tesis doctoral recoge el estudio antracológico de los materiales leñosos carbonizados de cinco yacimientos arqueológicos de la Región de Murcia cuya secuencia cronológica cubre los últimos 3800 años, desde la Edad del Bronce hasta la época medieval. Los yacimientos estudiados son concretamente La Punta de los Gavilanes (Mazarrón), con ocupación desde la Edad del Bronce hasta mediados del siglo I a.C.; Barranco de la Viuda (Lorca), con un único momento de ocupación asociado al Bronce Argárico; el Balneario Romano de Archena, cuya cronología se sitúa en torno al siglo I d.C.; los materiales constructivos carbonizados del Teatro Romano de Cartagena y, finalmente, el enclave de los siglos XII y XIII localizado en la Calle Santa María nº 19 de Jumilla.Los resultados obtenidos se insertan en el contexto del Sureste de la Península Ibérica a partir de su discusión con las secuencias polínicas y antracológicas publicadas para esta zona. / This doctoral thesis contains the charcoal analysis of the charred materials from five archaeological sites of the Región de Murcia, whose chronological sequence covers the last 3800 years, from the Bronze Age to the medieval period. The studied sites are concretely Punta de los Gavilanes (Mazarrón), occupied from the Bronze Age to the I century BC; Barranco de la Viuda (Lorca), with one moment of occupation associated to the Argaric Bronze; Balneario Romano de Archena, whose chronology is around the I century AD; the charred building materials of the Teatro Romano de Cartagena and, finally, the medieval site (XII and XIII centuries) located in the Calle Santa Maria nº 19 of Jumilla.The results are inserted in the context of the Southeastern Iberian Peninsula by means of their discussion with published pollen and charcoal sequences from this zone.

Timescale and Latitudinal dependence of Glacial Erosion Rates from Patagonia and Antarctic Peninsula Tidewater Glaciers (46-65 deg S)January 2012 (has links)
I use time-constrained sediment volumes delivered by glaciers calving into Marinelli Fjord (55°S), an outlet glacier of the Cordillera Darwin Ice Cap, Southern Patagonia, to determine erosion rates across different timescales. These results indicate that modern sediment yields and erosion rates from temperate tidewater glaciers can exceed long-term values over the time of deglaciation after the LGM (centennial and millennial time scales) by up to two orders of magnitude. In northern Patagonia (Gualas glacier area, 46.5°S), an overall increase in sediment production in the late Holocene is interpreted as result of a sharp increase in centennial timescale precipitation (intensified westerly winds). Erosion rates values span two orders of magnitude from 0.03 mm/yr for Lapeyrere Bay at Anver Island (~64.5°S), up to 1.09 mm/yr for San Rafael glacier at northern Patagonia (~46.5°S). Rates from the Antarctic Peninsula glaciers are in general lower than the temperate Patagonian glaciers. A good correlation of erosion rates and modern (estimated sea level annual 1970 temperature) sea level annual temperature was found. Latitudinal decrease of millenial is interpreted as result of decreasing annual temperature although decreasing in annual precipitation is suggested. The pattern of thermochronology ages from other studies (Thompson et al., 2010; Guenthner et al., 2010), along with the values of 10 3 and 10 6 years timescales erosion rates from this study, indicate that long-term glacial erosion decreases significantly its efficiency with latitude, implying that long-term glacial cover acts as a protective blanket, hindering erosion and allowing mountain growth. We conclude that the pattern of erosion rate decrease with timescale reflects the sensitivity of glaciers to climate variability. Temperate glaciers have higher sensitivity and greater response amplitude to climatic stress than subpolar or polar glaciers. This results in a decrease in erosion rates (sediment production) with latitude, and also in a decrease of erosion rate gradients with timescale.

Investigation of alkylphenol polyethoxylates in the aquatic environment of Hengchun peninsulaChao, Ching-hung 07 September 2012 (has links)
In April and June 2012, environmental water samples were collected from fourteen sampling sites in Hengchun peninsula to investigate the contents of alkylphenol polyethoxylates.
A solid phase extraction combined with LC-MS/MS method for the analysis of alkylphenol polyethoxylates in environmental waters was developed in this study. The mobile phase used methanol gradient elution with deionized water. The recovery of nonylphenol polyethoxylate and octylphenol polyethoxylate were 68~94 % and 65~93 %, limit of detection were 1.89~54.20 ng/L and 0.44~39.31 ng/L, limit of quantitative were 6.29~181 ng/L and 1.48~131 ng/L.
The SsuChung river contents of NPEO and OPEO were 15.64~36.29 £gg/L and 3.14~7.37 £gg/L. The Paoli river contents of NPEO and OPEO were 16.65~76.41 £gg/L and 5.66~18.80 £gg/L. The Hou Bay contents of NPEO and OPEO were 34.79~66.72 £gg/L and 7.77~19.03 £gg/L. The Shihniou river contents of NPEO and OPEO were 26.67 £gg/L and 6.68 £gg/L. The Wanli Tong, Baisha, Houbi Lake, South Bay, Caesar and Siangjiao Bay contents of NPEO and OPEO were 14.17~48.82 £gg/L and 3.88~14.79 £gg/L. The dry season concentration contents of alkylphenol polyethoxylates were high than the wet season. The concentration of nonylphenol polyethoxylate was higher than that of octylphenol polyehtoxylate.

Forms and Distributions of Hurricane Ike Backflow and Scour Features: Bolivar Peninsula, TexasPotts, Michael Killgore 2010 May 1900 (has links)
The storm surge from Hurricane Ike inundated Bolivar Peninsula as well as
pooled up (~4 meters above sea level) in the Galveston Bay System behind Bolivar.
After the hurricane passed, this water flowed back over the peninsula for about 19 hours,
causing a great deal of coastal destruction. Analysis of post-Hurricane Ike aerial
photography and Lidar data revealed the development of dramatically different scour
and backflow features in the beach and dune environments along Bolivar Peninsula,
Texas. Using Ward's cluster analysis, the 454 identified features were grouped
according to shape and size characteristics generated by an object-oriented shape
analysis program. Five distinct groups of features emerged from the cluster analysis.
Group 1 features were small and compact, distributed mostly in the west; Group 2
features were large and dendritic in nature, distributed where the peninsula was narrow.
Group 3 features had a longshore orientation with many of them resembling piano keys,
distributed in the east. Group 4 features were oriented longshore and ornate in shape.
Many of them were similar in shape to Group 2 or 3 features though statistically different enough to be grouped alone; they were distributed mostly in the eastern half of
the study area. Group 5 features tended to be elongated, oriented cross-shore, nonbranching,
and distributed mostly in the east.
At least four flow environments caused characteristic forms. The first flow
environment is typified by seaward flowing water encountering a road parallel with the
coastline. The water flowing over the road scours deeply on the leeward side (seaward
side), denuding beach sediments down to the resistant mud layer (Groups 3 and 4). The
second flow environment was caused by a geotube, which breached during the storm and
channelized flow through the breaches (Groups 2 and 5). The third flow environment
had a comparatively high elevation, high development, and shore-perpendicular roads
(Group 2). The fourth flow environment was typified by wide beaches backed by dunes
(lost in the storm) as well as flat vegetated areas. Water flowing seaward over the
vegetation scoured deeply into troughs after it came off the vegetation (Groups 1, 3, and
4).

The purpose of this study is to understand the geological, petrographical, mineralogical and
geochemical characteristics of analcime-bearing tuffs in the Biga Peninsula and to determine
formation process of these tuffs.
The study area lies between Ayvacik and Kü / ç / ü / kkuyu. The rock units are pre-Eocene
basement rocks, Miocene Behram Volcanics (Arikli Tuff, andesite, andesitic agglomerate),
Pliocene volcanics, Miocene lacustrine sediments (Kü / ç / ü / kkuyu Formation) and Quaternary
alluvium. Analcimes which are found in Arikli Tuff are the main objective of this study.
Detailed petrographical, mineralogical and geochemical studies were caried out on the Arikli
Tuff samples by using petrographical microscope, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron
microscopy, diffrential thermal analyses inductively coupled plasma & / #8211 / mass spectrometry and
optical emission spectrometry.
Fine-grained and coarse-grained analcime crystals in Arikli Tuff were determined by their
colorless, isotropic, trapezohedral and low relief. In addition to petrographic study, SEM and
XRD methods also confirmed the presence of analcime.
Two modes of occurrences were determined by the petrographical and mineralogical studies / coarse-grained euhedral or anhedral crystals in cavities and pumice fragments and single
crystals or clusters of fine-grained analcimes embedded in the matrix.
It was stated that there are two types of formation of analcime / alteration of volcanic glass and
precipitation from alkaline solution based on petrographical and SEM studies. Geochemical
methods, moreover, support the formation types.

Tourism is an important economic activity in our country as it is all around the world. It is also defined as an industry which is related to other economical sectors. Therefore, governments need to manage, develop and market the tourism facilities so that tourism industry can help economical growth effectively.
Tourism planning means to manage large amount of data. Therefore, it is desirable to integrate Geographic Information Systems and also Remote Sensing to planning. The aim of the thesis is to define how to increase the contributions of GIS for site selection purposes for new tourism types.
The case study is chosen as Bodrum Peninsula that is the hearth of Turkey in tourism sector. The fast and unplanned tourism development is causing some problems in nature, transportation, social and technical infrastructure of Bodrum. Summer houses, hotels, holiday villages are built up increasingly, so a huge difference occurs between winter (97.000) and summer (1.500.000) populations, which produce one of the reasons for problems.
In this study, new tourism types, which are camping, caravanning, grass-skiing, site-parachuting and biking activities, are suggested in Bodrum Peninsula. Site selection process for these types is performed according to the requirements defined by the Youth and Sport Association. Slope, aspect, and proximity analyses are performed in order to find the suitable areas for each tourism type. Then, analytical hierarchy process technique is used to give weight to each criterion to emphasize their effects. Finally, site selection results are compared with the environmental plan.
