The purpose of this study is to determine, by actual classroom experiment, the relationship between mental ability and reading achievement; and to ascertain the best methods of increasing reading ability. A secondary purpose in connection with this study was the critical evaluation of a testing program.

En 1994, Perrin-Riou a donné un procédé général de construction de fonctions L p-adiques des motifs à partir d'un système d'éléments « globaux ». Ce procédé fait intervenir une application « exponentielle de Perrin-Riou » qui interpole les exponentielles de Bloch-Kato associées à la représentation p-adique étudiée tordue par les puissances du caractère cyclotomique. Ces résultats ont ensuite été développés, avec en particulier la preuve par Colmez de la loi de réciprocité explicite conjecturée par Perrin-Riou. Plusieurs travaux récents suggèrent que ces résultats peuvent se généraliser en y remplaçant les extensions cyclotomiques par les extensions associées à un groupe de Lubin-Tate. Cette thèse donne une telle généralisation pour la construction de l'application « logarithme de Perrin-Riou » trouvée par Colmez.

Depuis quelques années, les télévisions publiques sont en crise. Confrontées à la multiplication de l'offre télévisuelle, à la déréglementation et à une transformation des habitudes de consommation des médias, il leur devient de plus en plus difficile de jouer le rôle qui leur était traditionnellement confié, et leur utilité est remise en cause un peu partout dans le monde. Le Canada ne fait pas exception : la SRC/CBC est la cible d'attaques provenant aussi bien des diffuseurs privés que des politiques, qui dans certains cas, vont jusqu'à réclamer sa privatisation. Comment Radio-Canada répond-elle à ces attaques? Comment justifie-t-elle son maintien dans le système de radiodiffusion canadien? Alors que les arguments en faveur de la radiodiffusion publique répertoriés dans la littérature se basent principalement sur des principes démocratiques d'égalité et de participation de tous les citoyens, une analyse des documents et discours produits par Radio-Canada pendant les mandats de Perrin Beatty et Robert Rabinovitch (1995-2003) nous démontre que les arguments nationalistes occupent une place prépondérante dans l'argumentaire radio-canadien. Ces résultats ne sont pas étonnants puisque l'histoire témoigne de l'importance qu'ont eu les objectifs nationaux dans l'implantation et le développement du système de radiodiffusion canadien. Mais l'analyse révèle aussi le recours à des arguments généralement associés au secteur privé pour mettre en valeur Radio-Canada. Ces deux types d'arguments soulèvent de nombreuses questions quant à leur pertinence et leur efficacité pour défendre la télévision publique.

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is analysed as the weighted residual method. In particular the analysis focuses on the collocation aspect of the method. Using Monte Carlo experiments we demonstrate that SPH is highly sensitive to node disorder, especially in its symmetrised energy and momentum conserving form. This aspect of the method is related to low [Beta] MHD instabilities observed by other authors. A remedy in the form of the Weighted Differences Method is suggested, which addresses this problem to some extent, but at a cost of losing automatic conservation of energy and momentum. ¶ The Weighted Differences Method is used to simulate propagation of Alfven and magnetosonic wave fronts in [Beta] = 0 plasma, and the results are compared with data obtained with the NCSA Zeus3D code with the Method of Characteristics (MOC) module. ¶ SPH is then applied to two interesting astrophysical situations: accretion on to a white dwarf in a compact binary system, which results in a formation of an accretion disk, and gravitational collapse of a magnetised vortex. Both models are 3 dimensional. ¶ The accretion disk which forms in the binary star model is characterised by turbulent flow: the Karman vortex street is observed behind the stream-disk interaction region. The shock that forms at the point of stream-disk interaction is controlled by the means of particle merges, whereas Monaghan-Lattanzio artificial viscosity is used to simulate Smagorinsky closure. ¶ The evolution of the collapsing magnetised vortex ends up in the formation of an expanding ring in the symmetry plane of the system. We observe the presence of spiralling inward motion towards the centre of attraction. That final state compares favourably with the observed qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the circumnuclear disk in the Galactic Centre. That simulation has also been verified with the NCSA Zeus3D run. ¶ In conclusions we contrast the result of our Monte Carlo experiments with the results delivered by our production runs. We also compare SPH and Weighted Differences against the new generation of conservative finite differences methods, such as the Godunov method and the Piecewise Parabolic Method. We conclude that although SPH cannot match the accuracy and performance of those methods, it appears to have some advantage in simulation of rotating flows, which are of special interest to astrophysics.

The economic disaster known as the Great Depression struck Grayson County, Texas, in 1929, and full economic recovery did not come until the close of World War II. However, the people of Grayson benefited greatly between 1933 and 1946 from the myriad spending programs of the New Deal, the building of the Denison Dam that created Lake Texoma, and the establishment of Perrin Army Air Field. Utilizing statistical data from the United States Census and the Texas Almanac, this thesis analyzes the role of government spending‐federal, state, and local‐in the economic recovery in Grayson County.
