THE IMPACT OF THE RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL, CHILD WELFARE SYSTEM AND INTERGENERATIONAL TRAUMA UPON THE INCARCERATION OF ABORIGINALS

Thesis (Master, Education) -- Queen's University, 2010-12-09 18:03:40.27 / This was a qualitative research study involving Aboriginal offenders at a Federal institution in the Ontario Region. The purpose of this study was to illuminate the Aboriginal offenders perspectives on their experiences that led to their incarceration. The major research questions guiding this study include: 1. What experiences do Aboriginal offenders feel contributed to their incarceration? 2. What do Aboriginal offenders feel could have prevented their incarceration? 3. How do Aboriginal offenders describe their experiences with the Residential School and child welfare systems? 4. What are the Aboriginal offenders' perspectives on their experiences with CSCs healing and intervention programs? One of the goals of this study was to provide information to CSC to improve the reintegration programs and help Aboriginal offenders become law abiding citizens. The data was collected from individual interviews, which was analyzed in detail to develop themes. The analyses sought for stories that captured the depth of the experiences that led to the Aboriginal offenders incarcerations. This study provided the personal perspective of the offenders as to how the Residential School and child welfare system have impacted their lives, and offers some insight into the over-representation of Aboriginal offenders in the prison system. This study also demonstrated how the socio-economic situation of these Aboriginal offenders played a role in their path towards prison. It is important to capture the voices of the Aboriginal offenders experiences towards incarceration. Their stories offer ways to help other Aboriginal people. We must have Aboriginal community members involved in the lives of Aboriginal youth to prevent them from getting into trouble, and find alternative positives outlets and activities. We must instill and provide hope and inspiration so that our youth have something to look forward to in their lives. I know this is happening to varying degrees in our Aboriginal communities; however, we need to keep working towards this goal. In addition, CSC might consider allocating more resources and financial assistance to Aboriginal communities, who are dealing with their people involved within the prison system. / Master

Sjuksköterskornas erfarenheter av palliativ omvårdnad : - En litteraturöversikt / The nurses' experiences of palliative care : - A literature study

Background: Palliative care is a focus in care that aims at the quality of life of persons with incurable disease. The need for palliative care is wide globally and several care facilities provide palliative care. The nursing care includes aspects of a physical, mental, social, spiritual and existential nature and it is the nurse's task to lead the nursing work together with the person in care. Aim: The purpose was to describe the nurses' experiences in palliative care of adults. Method: A literature study based on 12 scientific articles. The data is analyzed with thematic analysis. Result: The results are presented as five main themes. ”Emotional challenges”, ”the balance between profession and person”, ”the care relationship”, ”relieving the persons physical pain” and ”meeting the needs of relatives”.  Conclusion: Feelings of inadequacy among nurses make it difficult for them to separate their person from their profession, which affects the nurses on a personal level. The result of this is that nurses may feel insecure in their contacts with the person and therefore training in palliative care is required to help nurses develop management strategies. Further research is required to ensure good care of persons and relatives through the nurses' presence and knowledge. / Bakgrund: Palliativ vård är en inriktning inom vården som syftar till att förbättra livskvaliteten hos personer med obotlig sjukdom. Behovet av palliativ vård är stort globalt och flera olika instanser bedriver palliativ vård. Omvårdnaden som bedrivs innefattar aspekter av fysisk, psykisk, social, andlig och existentiell karaktär och de är sjuksköterskans uppgift att leda omvårdnadsarbetet tillsammans med personen som får vård. Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva sjuksköterskornas erfarenheter av palliativ omvårdnad för vuxna personer. Metod: En litteraturstudie baserad på 12 vetenskapliga artiklar. Datan är analyserad med tematisk analys. Resultat: Resultatet presenteras som fem teman. ”Känslomässiga utmaningar”, ”balans mellan profession och person”, ”vårdrelationen”, ”lindra personens fysiska smärta” och ”möta närståendes behov”. Slutsats: Känslor av otillräcklighet hos sjuksköterskor gör det svårt för dem att separera sin person från sin profession vilket påverkar sjuksköterskorna på ett personligt plan. Resultatet av detta blir att sjuksköterskorna kan känna sig osäkra i kontakten med personen som får vård vilket motiverar att behovet av utbildning i palliativ vård för att hjälpa sjuksköterskor att utveckla hanteringsstrategier. Vidare forskning krävs för att säkra god omvårdnad för personer och närstående genom sjuksköterskornas närvaro och kunskap.

We are Still Dancing: Métis Women’s Voices on Dance as a Restorative Praxis for Wellbeing

The purpose of this work is to center dance at the heart of Métis identity expressions, where reconnecting with who we are through dance is intimately grounded within an Indigenous understanding of restoring wellbeing. Exploring the experiences of four prominent Métis women allowed a space to celebrate the voice of dancers as they make sense of what it means to practice Métis dance within their lives. This research further focuses on the experiences of Métis dance as an understanding of Indigenous wellbeing. The lived experiences were collected and reviewed within an Indigenous research framework grounded in the Cree and Métis values of Mino-pimatisiwin (good life) and Wahkotowin (kinship) (Hart, 1999; Kelsey, 2008). Both concepts deeply inform the processes related to our reciprocal relationship to all things, living and non-living and further place emphasis on our shared responsibility to honour, respect and acknowledge Indigenous knowledge and its value to our communities. There were three findings that emerged from this study: Understanding Métis dance (1) as a restorative and relational praxis of self-knowing; 2) as intergenerational knowledge transfer; 3) as a site for growing cultural awareness and self esteem. The voices of the women celebrate Métis peoplehood through the restorative practice of dance and in doing so allow us to un-settle and re-center the notion of Métis identity and dispel the question of “authenticity” (Lawrence, 2003). These are our own personal stories to tell, and only we can rewrite them in a way that is beneficial and meaningful to us.

Exploring the impact of parental church based ministry on the lives of clergy children : a critical reflection

Very little is known in the UK about how parental church-based ministry impacts the lives of their children. Clergy children themselves have rarely, if ever, been afforded the opportunity to formally express their views and opinions on this crucial aspect of their lives, to the extent that they have been described as a ‘lost voice’ in the Church. This thesis seeks to fill this gap in our knowledge with a combination of extensive literature reviews, data obtained from a Pilot Study using the social network system Facebook, and semi-structured interviews with six adult clergy children from different denominational backgrounds who are now ministers in their own right, and by so doing help raise their profile in the Christian community. Taken together, the data confirms that the church-based ministry of clergy parents does impact their children’s lives and that if responses are any indication, other clergy children too, are able to make their views and insights known if asked. In other words, their voices need no longer be “lost,” but can be heard. In so doing they offer a fresh perspective on the practice of church-based ministry. Based on these findings the thesis proceeds to outline the theological and practical implications for the practice of ministry with a call to affirm the importance of a person’s story in the task of theological reflection; to recognise the contribution of children’s insights to faith and practice, and the values on which pastoral care should be based as outlined by the participants themselves. It concludes by proposing that further research is required in order to ascertain the full extent on how church-based ministry impacts the lives of clergy children, a topic which in the UK still remains a largely unexplored aspect of Church life and practice.

MENTAL HEALTH MEMORIES: A WEB-BASED ARCHIVE FOR MENTAL HEALTH STORIES

The Mental Health Memories project is an online archive created in order to display and preserve the personal histories of those with mental health experiences. The project aims to fill a void in available material culture related to the history of mental health and its preservation. Participants’ contributions include: oral histories, personal items, documents, and audio. Bringing together multimedia sources, the MHMemories website allows for the preservation of these items and stories through the digitization of contributions. This method allows for participants’ items to stay in their possession while also becoming part of the archive. In order to recruit participants, the Mental Health Memories project teamed up with the Psychiatric Stories Archive, based at California State University San Bernardino, and the San Bernardino County Behavioral Health Clubhouse. Three collection days facilitated the gathering of materials. The final product is the MHMemories.org/.com website which showcases the contributions of participants. The Mental Health Memories project helps to illustrate the diversity of mental health experiences.

The loss of intimacy is a pervasive tale, felt especially poignantly when the particular story, with its plot lines of love and betrayal, soaked as they are in rage and grief, is my own. By inverting the research process, whereby I call upon friends, and strangers who become friends, to assist me in the meaning-making process, this autoethnographic account of the twenty year downward spiral of my now defunct marriage makes tangible the shared project of making sense of intimacy, love and loss. It connects the personal to the social, cultural, and (most especially) the politically gendered nature of heterosexual relationship experience. 精神障礙者的服務深受現代精神醫學的影響,「診斷」會先於「人」作為看待精神障礙者的框架。隨著對精神疾病的詮釋更加多元,開始出現一些以重視精神障礙者主體性、社會結構取向、優勢正向思考為特點的另類工作方法。本研究所探討的繪畫團體和展覽行動也是基於以上理念的工作方法。 本研究透過與五位精神障礙者的深度訪談,以及對他們繪畫作品的視覺評估,來瞭解他們參與繪畫團體和展覽行動中的轉化歷程。本研究以精神障礙者的生命故事和作品作為開啟,去走進每一個人的生命經驗,去瞭解每一個人的個性、想法,藉此放下視他們為精神障礙者的視框,逐漸展現每一個獨特的個體。基於對每一個個體的深入理解,從而瞭解到他們如何在繪畫團體中感受當下的平靜專注、運用創作練習自我表達、透過自我覺察促成改變的契機、彼此被看見、被傾聽,並獲得人對人之影響力的過程。繪畫也成為了一種非結構化的工作方式,去幫助工作者更貼近每個精神障礙者的內心世界。隨著繪畫團體的「自我探索」面向不斷加深,個人生命背後共有的社會處境被看見,該團體開始有意識地以展覽行動來朝向「社會參與」的面向發展。該團體運用展覽為精神障礙者建立一個真實社會互動的空間、獲得新的身份以及人際磨合和情緒控制的學習,並透過情感共鳴的方式達到去污名的效果。 / The service for people with psychosocial disability is deeply influenced by the modern psychiatry, which tends to see the person as a diagnosis rather than a man / women. As the interpretation of mental illness is becoming more diverse, there comes some alternative treatment methods, which emphasize the individuality of people with psychosocial disability, using social structure orientation and strength-based thinking. The art group and art exhibition studied in this paper are also based on above philosophy. Through in-depth interviews with five people with psychosocial disability and visual assessment on their artworks, this study aims to understand their changing experience in the art group and art exhibition. This study starts with the life stories and artworks of the five interviewees, stressing them as unique individuals with own personality then thoughts rather than those imposed stereotypes of people with psychosocial disability. Based on the depth understanding of every interviewees, the study described their experience in the art group allowing them to feel peaceful and focused, and through art making they were able to express and develop awareness of self, hence promoting changes in self and relationships. The art group described in this study used nonstructural working method, which allowed the group leader and social workers to become closer to the inner world of people with psychosocial disability. With time, shared self-experiences emerged among the art group members, and the group started to evolve towards more social participation in ways of art exhibition. The art exhibition provided them a platform for real interaction with the society, for formulation of new identity, for opportunities to learn interpersonal skills and emotion control, and for diminishing stigmatization through emotional empathy.
