Mobility Management Scheme for Context-Aware Transactions in Pervasive and Mobile CyberspaceYounas, M., Awan, Irfan U. January 2013 (has links)
No / Rapid advances in software systems, wireless networks, and embedded devices have led to the development of a pervasive and mobile cyberspace that provides an infrastructure for anywhere/anytime service provisioning in different domains such as engineering, commerce, education, and entertainment. This style of service provisioning enables users to freely move between geographical areas and to continuously access information and conduct online transactions. However, such a high mobility may cause performance and reliability problems during the execution of transactions. For example, the unavailability of sufficient bandwidth can result in failure of transactions when users move from one area (cell) to another. We present a context-aware transaction model that dynamically adapts to the users' needs and execution environments. Accordingly, we develop a new mobility management scheme that ensures seamless connectivity and reliable execution of context-aware transactions during mobility of users. The proposed scheme is designed and developed using a combination of different queuing models. We conduct various experiments in order to show that the proposed scheme optimizes the mobility management process and increases the throughput of context-aware transactions.

A needs assessment of parents on how to raise an autistic childBalfour, Lara Jane 30 November 2007 (has links)
The motivation of the study was to explore the problems of families in South Africa who struggle to manage their children with autism and to find out whether they were receiving appropriate assistance. This was done by assessing the needs of the parents of children with autism by means of semi-structured interviews.
Through these interviews, the parents were given the opportunity to express what information or recommendations they would like to have available to them. How the parents view their experience, their feelings about these experiences, and the strategies and actions that they take in order to cope with raising their child with autism, is important information. The aim of the study was to explore the problems South African families have so that this may form the base of information supplied to professionals such as psychologists, social workers, and educators thereby assisting in improving service delivery to parents of children with autism. / Social Work / M.Diac. Modular textile-enabled bioimpedance system for personalized health monitoring applicationsFerreira, Javier January 2017 (has links)
A growing number of factors, including costs, technological advancements, ageing populations, and medical errors, are leading industrialized countries to invest in research on alternative solutions to improve their health-care systems and increase patients’ quality of life. Personal health systems (PHS) examplify the use of information and communication technologies that enable a paradigm shift from the traditional hospital-centered healthcare delivery model toward a preventive and person-centered approach. PHS offer the means to monitor a patient’s health using wearable, portable or implantable systems that offer ubiquitous, unobtrusive biodata acquisition, allowing remote monitoring of treatment and access to the patient’s status. Electrical bioimpedance (EBI) technology is non-invasive, quick and relatively affordable technique that can be used for assessing and monitoring different health conditions, e.g., body composition assessments for nutrition. When combined with state-of-the-art advances in sensors and textiles, EBI technologies are fostering the implementation of wearable bioimpedance monitors that use functional garments for personalized healthcare applications. This research work is focused on the development of wearable EBI-based monitoring systems for ubiquitous health monitoring applications. The monitoring systems are built upon portable monitoring instrumentation and custom-made textile electrode garments. Portable EBI-based monitors have been developed using the latest material technology and advances in system-on-chip technology. For instance, a portable EBI spectrometer has been validated against a commercial spectrometer for total body composition assessment using functional textile electrode garments. The development of wearable EBI-based monitoring units using functional garments and dry textile electrodes for body composition assessment and respiratory monitoring has been shown to be a feasible approach. The availability of these measurement systems indicates progress toward the real implementation of personalized healthcare systems. /
QC 20170517

The proposed clustering approache divides the network into clusters based on affinity relationships between nodes and two types of keys which are generated by a clusterhead. The first one is shared by a clusterhead and its local members and the second one is shared by the clusterhead and its parent cluster. The proposed algorithm is adaptive according to the limitation of the mobile nodes battery power and to the dynamic network topology changes. The performance evaluation and communication overhead analysis of the proposed algorithm are presented using simulation.

Construção e validação de marcadores de vulnerabilidade de lactentes para disfunções em seu desenvolvimento socioemocional / Building and validation of vulnerability markers of infants to dysfunctions in their socioemotional developmentSilva, Daniel Ignacio da 10 August 2017 (has links)
Introduction: The socioemotional development of infants is conditioned by the exposure to context-related factors, whose presence defines infants vulnerability to socioemotional dysfunctions. The synthesis of exposure factors as qualitative markers of vulnerability holds up the construction of tools, which capture vulnerability situations and promote the socioemotional development. Objectives: To build vulnerability markers of infants for dysfunctions in their socioemotional development and to perform their content validation. Method: Methodological research with qualitative and quantitative approach, based on the Bioecological Model of Human Development, and implemented through two research steps: data collection and synthesis, and content validation. The identification of exposure factors occurred through an integrative review, carried out between April and August 2016, with defined inclusion and exclusion criteria of studies, and systematic search strategies. The identified data were collected, submitted to the categorical thematic analysis technique. The exposure factors were grouped according their semantic similarity and it was analised the relation of categories with the context levels (Microsystem, Mesosystem, Exosystem and Macrosystem) defined by the Bioecological Model. Subsequently, it was analised the relation of categories with the elements of vulnerability of children to adverse situations in their development. From the categorization of the exposure factors, the construction of the vulnerability markers, their components and their operational manuals occurred. These contents were submitted to two rounds of content validation with expert judges in the field of child health and child development. This research was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Nursing School of the University of São Paulo through the Certificate of Presentation for Ethical Appreciation nº 57933816.8.0000.5392. Results: The final sample of included articles for data collection was 112. In the context of the Microsystem and Mesosystem, the exposure factors were categorized as difficulties in the ongoing nurturing relationships; adversities in family relationships and social support, and the caregivers\' illness situation that influence the proximal processes. In the Exosystem and Macrosystem, the exposure factors were categorized as caregivers\' social vulnerabilities and weaknesses of public policies determining the material and social conditions of the family. From these categories, eight vulnerability markers, their 39 components and their operational manuals were built. The first round included 17 judges who had a maximum agreement of 100% and a minimum of 64% in the validation of the markers, their components and operational manuals. The material was revised with the judgessuggestions. In the second round, 11 judges participated with a maximum agreement of 100% and a minimum of 73%, validating the eight proposed markers with their 36 components. Final Considerations: The synthesis of exposure factors supported by a comprehensive development theory allowed the construction of vulnerability markers that had high approval. The consensus obtained by the judges allows that this technology be tested in clinical practice, to verify its predictive capacity, with a potential of anticipation of the exposure factors subsidizing the prevention of socioemotional dysfunctions.
