Astrological implications in the 'Lot oracle' PGM 50

In previous editions of the magical papyri, PGM 50 has been considered as a lot oracle. In this article we propose a reinterpretation of the text as a source for astrology rather than for lot oracles. This reinterpretation is based on PGM 50’s astrological vocabulary. We provide a new translation based on this evidence. We further discover parallels to the second-century C.E. astrologer Vettius Valens in the verso of the text, which emend the original text as given by Wessely and Preisendanz. / In früheren Editionen der magischen Papyri wurde PGM 50 als Losorakel angesehen. In diesem Artikel argumentieren wir jedoch, den Text eher als einen Vertreter der Astrologie denn als ein Losorakel aufzufassen. Diese Neuinterpretation beruht auf dem astrologischen Fachvokabular, das in PGM 50 Anwendung fi ndet. Neben einer Neuübersetzung, basierend auf diesen Erkenntnissen, war es möglich, auf dem Verso des Pergaments Parallelen zum Werk von Vettius Valens (2. Jh. n. Chr.) zu identifi zieren. Dadurch kann die Erstedition von Wessely und die Textausgabe bei Preisendanz emendiert werden.

Estão presentes três importantes tipos de minérios sulfetados mobilizados: brecha, formação ferrífera bandada (BIF) e minério maciço hidrotermal. O último, é o objeto de estudo desta pesquisa. O minério maciço hidrotermal está associado a zonas de falhas transversais tardias, de direção NE-SW e N-S que cortam as rochas hospedeiras, e são perpendiculares a principal zona de cisalhamento que contém o principal corpo de minério. O minério maciço hidrotermal é formado por uma matriz oxi-sulfetada, constituída por pirrotita, pentlandita, calcopirita, pirita, violarita e magnetita, contendo minerais da série cobaltita-gersdorffita, minerais do grupo da platina, minerais da série linneita-polidymita, siegenita, além de carbonatos e quartzo. Os minerais do grupo da platina ocorrem disseminados por todo minério, associados a fases silicáticas hidratadas, inclusos em grãos de magnetita e minerais da série cobaltita-gersdorffita, no contato entre o minério e as rochas encaixantes. Próximo ao contato, são observados típicas feições de alteração hidrotermal do tipo talco-carbonato-clorita-sulfeto. Ao final do evento tectono-metamórfico, durante o Neo Proterozóico, que atuou na área em condições de baixa a alta temperatura (fácies xisto verde), foram produzidas diversas soluções hidrotermais que afetaram as rochas encaixantes nas proximidades do corpo de minério, bem como do próprio minério, originando um novo tipo de minério, aqui designado como minério maciço hidrotermal. / The komatiite-associated Ni-Cu-Co (PGE) sulphide mineralization at Fortaleza de Minas, southwestern of Minas Gerais state is believed to have a magmatic origin, but a number of post-magmatic processes significantly modified the original distribution, structure, texture, mineralogy and chemistry of the ores. Three important types of mobilized sulphide are present: breccia, banded iron formation (BIF) and hydrothermal massive ore. The last is the object of study of this research. The hydrothermal massive ore are associated to the late transversal fault zones, of N-S and NE-SW direction that cut host rocks, and are perpendicular to the principal shear zone that comprise the main ore body. The hydrothermal massive ore is formed by a massive oxi-sulphated matrix, consisted of pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, violarite and magnetite, comprising cobaltite-gersdorffite minerals series, platinum-group minerals, linnaete-polydymite minerals series, siegenite, besides carbonates and quartz. The platinum-group minerals occur disseminated over the entire ore, associated to hydrated siliceous phases, and enclosed in magnetite grains and cobaltite-gersdorffite mineral series, in the contact between the ore and enclosing rocks. Next to this contact, are observed typical hydrothermal alteration features as talc-carbonate-chlorite-sulphide. In the end of the tectonic-metamorphic event, during the Neo Proterozoic, that actuated in the area in conditions of low to medium temperatures (greenschist facies), were produced a number of hydrothermal solutions that affected enclosing rocks next to the ore body as well as the proper ore, generating a new type of ore, here designated as hydrothermal massive ore.

The first, theoretical part, compares project, program and portfolio and their lifecycles. Rest of work contains a methods used to implementation of program management. Main goal of this thesis is to provide overview information on this area and introduce basic practices how to implement program management to a reader's organization.

Les notions de possession et d'exorcisme en Grèce ancienne à la lumière des auteurs anciens, des phylactères et des PGM

La notion d'un esprit étranger et invisible qui prend possession d'un corps est, croit-on, sémitique. Les peuples proche-orientaux et juifs avaient développé des rituels et des pratiques spécifiques pour s'en débarasser. Les Grecs, pour leur part, avaient parfois à composer avec différentes entités, des daimones, des morts ou des apparitions et parfois des divinités dont les actions pouvaient s'avérer très nuisibles, si ce n'est nettement invasives. Toutefois, la communis opinio maintient que les concepts de la possession et de l'exorcisme ne furent chez eux, que tardivement introduits, et ce, sous l'influence des sémitiques. Pourtant, la littérature et les sources épigraphiques, papyrologiques et archéologiques semblent démontrer que les Grecs avaient déjà, dès l'époque classique, dans leur propre culture et religion, les éléments caractéristiques de la possession et de l'exorcisme. Une analyse approfondie de textes d'auteurs anciens, de formulaires de magie,dont les très connus Papyri Grecs Magiques et de diverses amulettes, apporte des arguments décisifs en ce sens. / The notion of an alien and invisible spirit who takes possession of a person is believed to be Semitic. The Near East and Jewish people had developed rituals and specific practices to get rid of them. The Greeks, meanwhile, had to deal with numbers of entities, daimones, dead or apparitions and sometimes with the gods themselves, whose actions could be very harmful, if not clearly invasive. Nevertheless, the communis opinio holds that the concepts of possession and exorcism where belatedly introduced, and this only under the influence of Semitics. However the literature and the epigraphic, archaeological and papyrological sources seems to show that the Greeks already had, from the classical period, in their own culture and religion, the characteristic elements of possession and exorcism. A detailed analysis of some ancient texts, of magical formularies, including the well-known Greek Magical Papyri, and of various amulets, provides decisive arguments in this direction.

Transcription Level Determination Of Candidate Genes Upon Infections Of Powdery Mildew On Barley

Immune systems are fundamentally based on the differentiation of self and non-self. Unlike mammals, plants have an innate immune system responding to the pathogen only at the site of attack. One of these pathogens is Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei which is an obligate biotrophic pathogen causing powdery mildew disease and resulting in up to 30% yield loss for both cultivated and wild barley. In this study, Pallas-01 (P-01) and Pallas-03 (P-03) barley lines were inoculated with powdery mildew race Bgh103 (64/01) resulting incompatible and compatible interactions, respectively. 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hour-post-inoculation (hpi) samples were used in order to define the differential gene expression of NAD malic enzyme, chloroplast lipocalin, phosphoglyceromutase (PGM), Mg chelatase and 26S protease regulatory subunit 6B homolog. In the proteomics study previously conducted in the laboratory, except for the NAD-dependent malic enzyme, the other four proteins were shown to be involved in the incompatible interaction of P-01 and Bgh103 at protein level, whereas NAD-dependent malic enzyme was changing in the compatible interaction. The expression level for both proteomics and transcriptomics were assumed to be similar. However, the level of transcript would not always reflect its protein level or correlate with the level of proteins, due to complex cellular regulation processes. Post-transcriptional modifications such as synthesis, processing, degradation and post-translational modifications are changing the level of proteins expressed, thus a parallel correlation between the protein and mRNA levels can be lost. Other possible reasons for this variation can be changes in mRNA and protein stability, efficiency of translation and protein&rsquo / s turnover rate. The transcription level changes of the genes investigated in this study are found to be differentially expressed, supporting the proteomics data indicating that these genes are possibly involved in resistance. For further investigations, genetic tools such as gene silencing with RNAi and knockout experiments are required in order to elucidate the mechanism of these candidate genes in the plant-pathogen interaction.

Fundamentals of the flotation behaviour of palladium bismuth tellurides

Previous mineralogical investigations (QemSCAN) performed on all effluent flotation streams of Mimosa mine (Zimbabwe) indicated the presence of appreciable amounts of platinum group minerals (PGMs), which are not recovered. Most, generally in excess of 70%, of the liberated PGMs in these streams belonged to the Pt-Pd-Bi-Te class in all the samples investigated. In the first part of this work, electrochemical investigations, electrochemically-controlled contact angle measurements and Raman spectroscopy have been employed to investigate the interaction of ethyl xanthate with Pd-Bi-Te and PtAs2. Impedance measurements showed lower capacitance values in solutions containing KEX indicating the formation of a continuous surface layer. Anodic and cathodic polarization diagrams show the mixed potential to be higher than the reversible potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen equilibrium reaction, hence the formation of dixanthogen on the surface is possible. Electrochemically controlled in situ Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the co-presence of xanthate with dixanthogen indicating that xanthate retains its molecular integrity when it adsorbs on the surface of the Pd-Bi-Te. The result of this investigation has shown dixanthogen to be present on both the minerals (PtAs2 and Pd-Bi-Te) when the surfaces are anodically polarized. Chemisorbed xanthate could be identified within 120 seconds yielding a hydrophobic surface as indicated by electrochemically-controlled contact angle measurements. Maximum contact angles of 63o were measured in the case Pd-Bi-Te. As a result the mineral surface is expected to be hydrophobic and a lack of collector interaction with the mineral is not the reason for low PGM recoveries experienced. Secondly, the flotation recovery of synthetically prepared Pd-Bi-Te was compared with that of chalcopyrite (a typical fast-floating mineral) and pyrrhotite (a typical slow-floating mineral), with microflotation tests. These indicated Pd-Bi-Te to be a fast-floater with flotation rates exceeding that of chalcopyrite. Predicted flotation rate constants (from the Ralston model) were significantly lower for small particles (with diameters similar to those lost to the effluent streams) compared with those of particle with intermediate sizes. STUDY OF STRUCTURE-PROPERTY-PERFORMANCE OF THE POLYMER ELECTROLYTE MEMBRANE FUEL CELLS (PEMFCS)

<p>  </p> <p>With the surge of interest in the electrification of transportation driven by global climate change, the need for powertrains using non-carbon energy sources has become more urgent than ever. The fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) using polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have many advantages over the internal combustion engine (ICE) and other renewable energy vehicles such as high efficiency, zero-emission, fast fueling, unique power, and energy scalability (without heavy penalty from the increased mass). After three decades of intensive development, there are only several thousand FCEVs on the road, in contrast to the millions of battery electric vehicles (BEV) in use today. The biggest challenge of the widespread implantation of the PEMFCs is the cost, primarily due to the use of platinum catalysts. The high intrinsic catalyst activity exhibited using a rotating disc electrode (RDE) is rarely realized in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which is the core of PEMFC, due to the difference on the electrolyte(ionomer)/catalyst interfaces. Much of my Ph. D research effort is concentrated on how to reduce the Pt usage and improve the stability of catalyst to reduce the operation cost of fuel cells. Several approaches were practiced improving the performance of MEA in a fuel cell, such as optimizing the ink formulation and MEA fabrication method, enhancing proton conductivity of carbon support for catalysts, engineering the ionomer and catalyst interface via surface functionalization. Such studies unraveled the relationship between property, structure, and performance of MEA, and significantly improved the performance of MEA. Further, to reduce the cost of fuel cell operation, approaches that is to improve the stability of catalysts either in reducing Oswald ripening or limiting surface migration were practiced on developing novel catalysts. Such as doping anion into Pt and Ni alloy crystal structure, introducing PANI on catalyst surface. These approaches significantly improve the stability of catalyst and MEA. Finally, same as platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts, PGM-free catalysts as well as their MEAs were studied. A novel method of PGM-free MEA fabrication was developed which significantly reduced the thickness of catalyst layer, thus greatly reduced the mass transfer resistance. Also, a highly stable and active PGM-free catalyst was developed and can be considered as a strong competitor to replace the traditional PGM catalysts in MEA.</p>

Dans le tractus gastro-intestinal, l'adhésion des bactéries commensales à l’épithélium permet leur maintien, ce qui aide à contrôler l’implantation de germes indésirables par des mécanismes de concurrence (effets nutritionnels, sites spécifiques d'adhésion ...). Bien que le rôle de la couche du mucus (principalement composée de glycoprotéines à haut poids moléculaire, appelées mucines) recouvrant la muqueuse soit connu et décrit depuis de nombreuses années, notamment pour sa fonction de barrière protectrice, l'intérêt pour décrypter les mécanismes précis d’interaction(s) avec le microbiote (bactéries commensales, pathogènes ou probiotiques) n’a que récemment émergé. Dans ce cadre, l'objectif de cette thèse, menée en collaboration entre le Laboratoire d’Ingénierie des Systèmes Biologiques et des Procédés de Toulouse et le Laboratoire d’Analyse et d’Architecture des Systèmes de Toulouse, est de caractériser in vitro le comportement muco-adhésif de Lactococcus lactis, le modèle des bactéries lactiques, en utilisant des approches de quantification multi-échelles (du niveau moléculaire à l’échelle multicellulaire) sur un large panel de souches naturelles et recombinantes. Une attention particulière est accordée au rôle des mucines, en utilisant le modèle PGM (mucine gastrique de porc ou « Pig Gastric Mucin »).La première partie du travail a porté sur la quantification à l'échelle de la cellule unique des interactions entre L. lactis et une surface abiotique (polystyrène) recouverte de PGM, en utilisant la microscopie à force atomique (AFM). La faisabilité de la méthode a tout d'abord été démontrée sur la souche modèle L. lactis ssp. cremoris MG1820. La couche de PGM a été caractérisée en utilisant des méthodes analytiques complémentaires (AFM, XPS - spectroscopie de photoélectrons induits par rayons X, QCM-D - Microbalance à Quartz à mesure de Dissipation...). En parallèle, les bactéries L. lactis ont été immobilisées sur la pointe AFM et utilisées comme « sonde de force », en considérant la souche naturelle IBB477 (L. lactis ssp. cremoris), d’origine laitière et présentant une forte persistance dans le tractus digestif du rat lors d’essais réalisés in vivo (collaboration avec l’Institut de Biochimie et de Biophysique de Varsovie, Pologne). Comparé aux conditions contrôle (i.e., surface de polystyrène sans PGM), les niveaux de force d'adhésion enregistrés entre L. lactis et PGM sont inférieurs, ceci en raison des répulsions électrostatiques, hydrophiles et stériques s’établissant entre la couche de PGM et la paroi cellulaire. La forme des courbes représentant l’évolution de la force au retrait en fonction de la distance est également différente. Une analyse détaillée souligne la contribution, conjointe et différente selon les souches testées, d’événements (i) non adhésifs, (ii) adhésifs non spécifiques (interactions électrostatiques, hydrophobes, de van der Waals) et (iii) adhésifs spécifiques (liaison de type ligand/récepteur). La contribution spécifique a ensuite été explorée plus finement en termes de constantes cinétiques d’association et de dissociation. Nous avons, par ailleurs, poursuivi notre exploitation de la biodiversité naturelle chez les lactocoques en étudiant la souche TIL448 (L. lactis ssp. lactis) d’origine végétale, en collaboration avec l’Institut MICALIS de Jouy-en-Josas. Nous avons ainsi démontré, pour la première fois chez L. lactis, le rôle combiné des protéines à domaine(s) MUB (« Mucus-Binding ») et des pili, à travers l'analyse approfondie des données AFM (force d'adhésion, répartition des événements adhésifs spécifiques/non spécifiques, distances d'interaction...). Le rôle des pili a été confirmé sur des souches recombinantes piliées (L. lactis ssp. lactis IL1403), toujours en partenariat avec l’Institut MICALIS de Jouy-en-Josas. En parallèle, en collaboration avec l’Unité de Glycobiologie Structurale et Fonctionnelle de Villeneuve d'Ascq, nous avons cherché à identifier les O-glycannes de PGM (fractions neutre et acide), impliqués dans le processus d'interaction avec la surface bactérienne. Pour confirmer l’ensemble des résultats obtenus à l'échelle de la cellule unique et en mode statique par AFM (effet anti-adhésif de PGM, comportement muco-adhésif différent selon les souches de L. lactis), la deuxième partie du travail a été consacrée à des expérimentations à l’échelle de l’ensemble de la population bactérienne, en conditions dynamiques (QCM-D, chambre à écoulement cisaillé). Nous avons évalué par QCM-D chez les souches IBB477 et MG1820 les propriétés viscoélastiques des dépôts bactériens, en relation avec le comportement bio-adhésif vis-à-vis de la couche de PGM. Les données obtenues par AFM et chambre à écoulement cisaillé sur ces mêmes souches ont été confrontées pour accéder plus finement au mode d’interaction avec PGM (densité de liaisons sur la surface bactérienne). Enfin, nous avons évalué chez IL1403 l’effet des pili sur la dynamique de détachement et d’orientation sous cisaillement contrôlé.En conclusion, la combinaison des échelles d'observation et d’analyse, aussi bien au niveau de la cellule unique qu’à celui de l’ensemble de la population bactérienne, nous permet désormais de disposer de nouvelles connaissances sur les mécanismes diversifiés d'interaction entre L. lactis et PGM, visant à une meilleure compréhension des fonctionnalités de cette bactérie au niveau du tractus gastro-intestinal / In the gastrointestinal tract, adhesion of commensal bacteria to epithelial cells allows their retention, which helps to control the implementation of unwanted germs through mechanisms of competition (nutritional effects, specific sites of adhesion ...). Indeed, bacterial adhesion to the intestinal epithelium seems to be important for the balance of intestinal microbiota. Although the role of the mucus layer lining the mucosa, which is mainly composed of large glycoproteins termed mucins, is known and described for many years, particularly for its protective barrier function, the interest for unraveling precise mechanisms of interaction with bacteria (commensal, pathogens or probiotics) has just recently emerged. In this framework, the aim of the PhD thesis was to characterize in vitro muco-adhesive behavior of Lactococcus lactis, the model of Lactic Acid Bacteria, using multi-scale approaches (from molecular to multicellular levels) on a large set of natural and recombinant strains. A particular attention was paid to the role of mucins, using the PGM model (Pig Gastric Mucin).The first part of the work was focused on the quantification at nanoscale of interactions between L. lactis and adsorbed PGM, using AFM. The feasibility of the method was first demonstrated on the reference strain MG1820. PGM coating was characterized using a complementary set of analytical methods (AFM, XPS, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring…). In parallel, L. lactis cells were immobilized onto the AFM tip and used as a living force probe, considering the natural strain IBB477 (L. lactis subsp. cremoris), isolated from Polish artisanal dairy products and previously shown to display in vivo retention in the rat gut (collaboration with the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of Warsaw, Poland). Compared to control conditions (i.e., no PGM coating), adhesion force levels recorded for PGM were lower, due to the interplay of electrostatic, hydrophilic and steric repulsions. The shape of retraction force-distance curves for L. lactis/PGM interactions was also different. The detailed analysis of curve shape highlighted the contribution of non-adhesive, non-specific (electrostatic, hydrophobic, van der Waals interactions) and specific adhesive events (ligand/receptor bonding), depending on the strain under study. Specific forces were analyzed in terms of dissociation/association kinetic constants.We then explored the natural biodiversity among lactococci by studying the natural strain of L. lactis (subsp. lactis) TIL448 from plant origin, in collaboration with MICALIS (Jouy-en-Josas). We demonstrated, for the first time for L. lactis, the combined role played by “MUB-like” domain-containing protein and pili, through the thorough analysis of AFM data (adhesion force, repartition of specific/non-specific adhesive events and distances of interaction…). The role of pili was also confirmed with recombinant piliated strains (L. lactis subsp. lactis IL1403), in partnership with MICALIS (Jouy-en-Josas). In parallel, in collaboration with the “Unité de Glycobiologie Structurale et Fonctionnelle de Villeneuve d'Ascq”, a first attempt was done to identify the O-glycans of PGM (neutral and acid fractions), involved in interactions with the bacterial surface.To confirm these results achieved at single-cell scale and under static mode by AFM (anti-adhesive of PGM, different muco-adhesive properties among several strains of L. lactis), the second part of the work was devoted to experiments at multicellular scale under dynamic conditions (quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring – QCM-D, shear stress flow chamber). We evaluated by QCM-D, for MG1820 and IBB477 strains, the viscoelastic properties of the cell layers, in relation with the bio-adhesive behavior towards PGM. The data obtained by AFM and shear stress flow chamber were combined to access more precisely to the interaction mode with PGM (density of bonds over the cell surface).
