Embedded: the Australian Red Cross in the Second World WarSpear, Jonathan A. Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
This thesis demonstrates that the Australian Red Cross was embedded with the Australian government, military and civilian ‘home front’ during the Second World War. The legal basis, structure, leadership and administration of the Society were closely integrated with the official war effort of the Australian government and military. The Red Cross societies of other combatant nations were similarly organised to contribute to the logistical firepower of their respective governments and militaries. The Second World War revitalised the Australian Red Cross and caused the Society to forge even stronger links with the Australian government. The Society was integrated as a paramilitary branch of the Australian military forces and provided logistical support to the military in Australia and overseas by means of its Field Force. The pervasive presence of the Red Cross resulted in the embedding of the Society on the Australian civilian ‘home front’. The integration of the Australian Red Cross with the Australian government was for the purpose of supporting the war effort of the Allies in Australia and overseas. / Financing of International NGOs : what are the forces that build the link between private donors and large International NGOs through money?Lepoittevin, Christine 22 January 2014 (has links)
The large environmental and Humanitarian INGOs, since they were born, have developed a significant role in global governance, international aid and sustainable development. They have become a symbol of a path for another globalization. A large number of individual donors have supported them regularly, putting the subject at the heart of the globalization process, emerging out of a mass society. Donor’s loyalty to INGOs goes beyond a solidarity based on empathy and compassion. He recognizes his own individual responsibility when addressing required changes and actions. However money takes a strategic, but ambivalent, place that makes the private donor, whether it is a company or an individual, an economic data. The market world is step by step invading the philanthropic one bringing confusion. It involves a risk of a depersonalization process of together, donors and large INGOs. When focusing on the economic value of the donors, INGOs could forget the link with them.

Previous issue date: 2015-08-27 / CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / In the state of Amazonas, the cancer has reached alarming rates both in terms of incidence and mortality, favoring the emergence of effective policies to prevent and control the disease. In this sense, it is essential we understand that the historical production on health policies, aimed at fighting the disease, can contribute to the understanding of care models that have been adopted, the political relations that have been established, as has occurred the dialogue between the different political spheres. We consider also that the historical knowledge has much to contribute to the fight against cancer, as well as allowing us to ensure the registration and the memory of what has been lived and experienced, enables us also to understand the actions that have already integrated policies control. Thus, we can see possible ways to achieve more positive results in relation to prevention and control. From this perspective, this dissertation will talk on "Cancer Prevention and Control Policy in Amazonas, 1974 - 2011”, taking as object of study the Oncology Control Center – CECON”. To do this, we base our analysis on laws, decrees and reports on health policy in the region; and oral history research, where we use an instrument with a set of questions, which was applied with actors identified with the history of the institution. The work is divided into four chapters, of which three of them refer specifically to the proposed objectives. A chapter that looks at how public policies related to cancer have been applied in the state of Amazonas, from this renowned institution, another chapter, where we analyze the process of establishing public policies on the prevention and control of cervical cancer, in the state of Amazonas and the last chapter with the appreciation and analysis of the performance of two philanthropic foundations: Amazonense League Against Cancer / AM and Women's Network Against Cancer / AM, which perform support activities to the services provided by FCECON. Finally, the study of the Amazon cancer policy from the history of FCECON led us to more comprehensive analyzes bringing us confirmation that the history of local health policy is closely linked to the history of the national health policy, and which presents itself as a result of the reality at the time of its formulation, but also as a result of past actions that interact and give the dynamics of the system.

Luciana Parreira Pinheiro Pereira 11 February 2015 (has links)
Over the past years, there was the growth of the third sector on meeting the human necessities, due to the inefficiency of government policies. In 2010, non-profit entities represented 10% of the total existing organizations in Brazil. The nonprofits must have company behavior and State responsibility, the need to be self-sustaining. So come in competitive environment in contention for financial resources from public and private sources. In order to make it viable in the medium and long term, nonprofits need controllership instruments that allow assessment of the institution\'s performance, allowing the efficiency and effectiveness of the resources employed. Due to the scenario above, this study aims to evaluate the conceptual stage of maturity of the controllership instruments used in the evaluation of institutional performance. In reviewing the literature on the subject, identified the existence of studies with the pointing of the main controllership instruments used by non-profit organizations: planning and budget control, cost management, Balanced Scorecard - BSC and financial accounting. This study provides an analysis of the conceptual model to evaluate the controllership instruments used for evaluating institutional performance of nonprofits, specifically, the philanthropic hospitals in the state of São Paulo, since identified a gap in the literature on this aspect. As an additional contribution, this study highlighted the importance of conceptual maturity of the aforementioned instruments used by nonprofits in order to comply with the provisions and objectives of each of these instruments. The methodology used in this research was a survey with 51 statements prepared based on the main conceptual aspects, drawn from national and international literature. Of the 228 entities covered by the study, 39 responded appropriately to the instrument. The results led the indication of a positive level of conceptual maturity: 3.8 on a scale of 1 (lowest maturity) and 5 (more mature), with the possibility of improvements in such factors: processes, people, infrastructure and culture.

This study addresses the strategic management in philanthropic organizations, specifically in charity hospitals, represented, in Brazil, mostly by the Holy Houses of Mercy. It seeks demonstrate how charity hospitals apply the Ansoff\'s strategic management framework. Despite the existence of others, Ansoff\'s framework was chosen because it was the origin of this study theme. The methodologic procedure\'s first stage is a bibliometric research to get the state of the knowledge of the intended themes, as well as to determine the main authors of the theoretical construct. In a second step, the design research proceeds with a descriptive case study. This step applied an interview with two charity hospital employees to obtain primary data. Secondary data was collect from hospital\'s documents. Among the study\'s findings, while some elements from Ansoff\'s model are properly applied in the hospital, others are not enlightened enough to employees. Another point is the fact that employees submit their own perspectives of the study\'s issue unlike an organizational perspective. In a employee opinion, it is occur by poor strategic issue communication.

Get involved : stories of the Caribbean postcolonial black middle class and the development of civil societyWilliams-Pulfer, Kim N. 07 March 2018 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The main research question of this project is: How do the narratives of Caribbean black
middle class civil society within the bounds of the “post-postcolonial” state, explain the evolving
yet current environment of local and postcolonial civil society development? Using the Bahamas
as a case, this project explores the historical, political, cultural, and social conditions that
supported the development of civil society within the context of a postcolonial society.
Furthermore, an investigation via in-depth interviews, participation observation, archival, and
contemporary document analysis contextualizes the present-day work of civil society leaders in
the Bahamas.
Methodologically, the project employs narrative analysis to uncover the perspectives,
voices, and practices of black middle-class Bahamian civil society offering an unfolding,
dynamic, and nuanced approach for understanding the historical legacies and contemporary
structure of local civil society and philanthropy. The study focuses on three primary forms of
narratives. These include the narratives of the past (historical), the narratives of expressive and
aesthetic cultural practices, and the narratives of lived experience.
The project locates that the development of civil society is linked to historical and
cultural forces. The findings show that that the narratives of history, social, and artistic
development foregrounds a hybrid model of civil society development drawn from the experience
of slavery, colonialism, decolonization, as well as the emerging structures related to economic
and political globalization. Furthermore, observed through resilience narratives, local civil society
leaders negotiate the boundaries of hybridity in their understanding of their personal, social, and
professional identities as well as the way in which they engage government, the public, as well as
local and international funders.

Social Responsibility Engagement At Times Of CrisisRehman, Muhammad Abdul, Butt, Aliza January 2023 (has links)
Abstract Date: 31 May 2023 Level: Bachelor theses in Business Administration, 15 cr Institution: School of Business, Society and Engineering, Mälardalen University Authors: Aliza Butt (020130), Muhammad Abdul Rehman (001115) Title: Social Responsibility Engagement At Times Of Crisis Supervisor: Dr Stylianos Papaioannou Keywords: CSR, CSR Engagement, Market crisis, Impact, Ethical, Philanthropic Research Questions: How are CSR engagements of companies impacted in times of market crisis? Purpose: The purpose of this research study is to conduct an analysis of how CSR engagements within companies are impacted by a market crisis. The main objective will be to ensure there is enough data which will fulfill this purpose of the study. Method: The study’s method approach is a qualitative approach in which there have been interviews conducted to gather primary data. After gathering the empirical data the authors used thematic analysis to analyze the data accordingly. The themes were made up from coding the data and finding similar patterns. Ethical considerations were of importance due to there being different respondents within the research, their choice to remain anonymous was considered, which is why the interviewees are anonymized in the research study. To ensure the highest quality of the study, the researchers ensured they collected and presented reliable and valid data, for the reader to read a trustworthy and interesting study. Conclusion: Overall, companies tend to prioritize their CSR engagements, even during times of crisis, to maintain their reputation and contribute to society. But companies look to find new ways of engaging in CSR and continue their efforts but they prioritize their economic responsibility, which made them change focus on some aspects regarding their engagements. The focus was found to be shifted even though the CSR engagements were continued mostly. The most obvious impact was that prioritization of companies changed from the crisis, and reduced new CSR engagements by companies was a consequence.
