Ditongos no Português de São Tomé e Príncipe / Diphthongs in the Portuguese of Sao Tome e Principe

Silveira, Alfredo Christofoletti 07 May 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this work is to investigate the realization of oral diphthongs in vernacular portuguese of Sao Tome and Principe (pvs). This variety of portuguese is in contact with other languages spoken in the country and differs from the linguistic system of the considered standard variety, the european portuguese (pe) (FIGUEIREDO, 2010; GONÇALVES, 2010; CHRISTOFOLETTI, 2011; SANTOS & CHRISTOFOLETTI, 2011). The hypothesis for the behavior of the phonetic-phonological system of pvs is the learning of portuguese as L2 (from recent past generations) (HAGEMEIJER, 2009; GONÇALVES, 2010), and the influence of contact with the creole languages spoken in the country, as the santome (FERRAZ, 1979), the principense (MAURER, 2009), angolar (MAURER, 1995) and kabuverdianu, since the communities are usually bilingual or living in multilingual environment. The intergenerational linguistic changes and the linguistic contact also justify the behavior in the realization of diphthongs that have variations in their realization in pvs. The corpus of this study consists of recordings of spontaneous speech of 18 informants, collected in the capital of stp through the assumptions of sociolinguistic theory and method (LABOV, 1991 [1972]). The reason to study the achievements of diphthongs, noted the uniqueness of its accomplishments, is to observe the behavior of a variant from portuguese in a multilingual environment; increase our knowledge of this variant; confront a system in diglossia; enable further studies on the pvs and compare it with other variants in the African countries witch have portuguese as official language. Regarding social variables, there is a link to the application of the process of monophthongization with the number of years of schooling, once that people with more time of school education tend to avoid monophthongization than people with less time of school education. Moreover, it was found the uniqueness of the phonetic-phonological system of pvs, because, unlike the pe (MATEUS & DANDRADE, 2000; MATEUS, 2002), considered prestigious in the country, pvs performs the monophthongization of diphthongs [eI ], as seeing in dinheiro [di\"ñeKU], primeiro [pri\"meKU] and feijoada [feZu\"ad5], it suggests an approach to behavior of Brazilian portuguese (pb) (cf. BISOL 1991, 1994; ARAÚJO 1999; LOPES 2002 e outros), however, monophthongization still occurs in contexts in both the variants whrer it is blocked as pb, as in the pe. So monophthongization occurs even when the following consonant is an voiceless alveolar occlusive [t], as in feitiço [fe\"tisU], leitão [le\"tãU ] e direito [di\"KetU], nons-documented fact in pb or pe. Regarding the diphthong [oU ] in pvs the monophthongization is categorical, as shown in studies on diphthongs variation in other varieties of portuguese. With respect to the diphthong [oI ] we observed that the variation in the application of monophthongization occurs only when it followed by the consonant [S], responsible for spreading the vocalic feature creating the glide [I ] through phonetic process. The diphthong [aI ] suffered variation in the monophthongization process, mainly before palatal consonant, in other contexts its occurrence was not very productive. Similarly, the diphthong [eU ] had a low rate of occurrence of monophthongization, and was kept in almost all contexts. The other diphthongs, [EI ], [EU ], [uI ] and [iU ], had rare occurrences, and it was impossible to observe variations in their realizations.

Varieties of Tone: Frege, Dummett and the Shades of Meaning

Kortum, Richard D. 01 January 2013 (has links)
In clear and lively prose that avoids jargon, the author carefully and systematically examines the many kinds of subtly nuanced words or word-pairs of everyday discourse such as 'and'-'but', 'before'-'ere', 'Chinese'-'Chink', and 'sweat'-'perspiration', that have proven resistant to truth-conditional explanations of meaning. / https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/1108/thumbnail.jpg

Correlations Between Vowel Lengths and Emotion in Narratives

Diaz, Brett Anthony 01 September 2015 (has links)
This paper looks at the relationship between emotion and vowel length in spontaneous speech, specifically during narratives. It is hypothesized that during emotionally-laden speech, vowel length will be longer in duration than when in non-emotional speech. Data is drawn from the Univerisity of California, Santa Barbara linguistic corpus, with conversations focused on individuals in and around Southern California. The paper builds on work by Dabbs et al., Banse & Scherer, Estes & Adelman, and others regarding the nature of cognitive monitoring, as well as stance as discussed by Ochs & Schieffelin, Ochs, Kärkkainen, Local & Walker, and how emotion is displayed in speech. Tokens chosen for analysis are /ɑ/, /ɑɪ/, and /ə/. Three of each token in first syllable position is collected for analysis from both emotional and non-emotional speech. Analysis of tokens then takes place by (mean) averaging each token's length for each speaker in each stance, then the total vowel average time is calculated again for each speaker in each stance. Beyond intra-vowel, intra-speaker averages, inter-speaker average is calculated to assess consistency of the vowel length changes between stances. The paper finds that the length of tokens shows an average increase during intraspeaker emotional speech.

Percentage of phonological process usage in expressive language delayed children

Miller, Sherri Lynn 01 January 1991 (has links)
Language delay and phonological delay have been shown to coexist. Because they so often co-occur, it is possible that they may interact, sharing a relationship during the child's development. A group of children who were "late talkers" as toddlers, achieved normal development in their syntactic ability by the preschool period. Because their language abilities are known to have increased rapidly, data on their phonological development could provide information on the relationship between phonological and syntactic development. The purpose of this study was to compare the percentage of phonological process usage of the eight most commonly used simplification processes in four-year-old expressive language delayed (ELD) children, children with a history of slow expressive language development (HX), and normally developing (ND) children. The questions this study sought to answer were: do ELD children exhibit a higher percentage of phonological process usage than ND children, and are HX children significantly different in their percentage of phonological process usage than ND and/or ELD children.

Phonetics and Phonology of Regressive Voicing Assimilation in Russian Native and Non-native Speech

Samokhina, Natalya January 2010 (has links)
In recent years, a great deal of research on second language (L2) acquisition has been concerned with non-target production of L2 learners, addressing issues such as native language (L1) transfer into L2 and the nature and source of developmental errors. Previous studies have mostly focused on the analysis of discrete L2 segments (Flege 1987, 1999; Major & Kim 1996), rather than on L2 phonological patterns. This study, however, examines the production of sequences of sounds in Russian L1 and L2 from both the phonetic and phonological perspectives. This dissertation investigates native and non-native production of real and nonsense words containing obstruent clusters in which a phonological phenomenon known as regressive voicing assimilation is required. In Russian, forms like lodka `boat' are rendered orthographically with a voiced obstruent which is pronounced as a voiceless one when followed by a voiceless obstruent. The results of the experiments reveal several production patterns in L1 and L2 speech as well as gradiency in devoicing which are further analyzed within the stochastic Optimality Theory framework. Categorical production is accounted for by the re-ranking of L1 and L2 constraints; whereas, gradiency in production is viewed as a result of the re-ranking of constraints within phonetically detailed constraint families.

Disserta??o (Mestrado Profissional) ? Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Educa??o, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2017. / The present study consists in identifying the existence of phonetic-phonological features in relation to the pronunciation of the English language in the education course of Letras Portugu?s/Ingl?s of the Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri. One of these features is related to the principles discussed in the Language Franca Core, as well as some orientation about the use of phonetic symbols and the articulation of sounds. Almeida Filho (2004) states that for the foreign-language teachers need to develop five competences during the education process, among these competences; the author emphasizes the linguisticcommunicative and the implicit one. This research understands that besides these, the theoretical competence also deserves to be highlighted, since it is responsible for connecting and articulating theory with practice. In this context, considering the current position of English as an international language and the conception of the intelligible pronunciation, it is necessary to study the theory of phonetic and phonological aspects of English language. According Mussalim (2001) it is essential to recognize the structure of the language and understanding the functioning of the phonological system in the process of teaching language learning. Because of this communicative aspect, it is interesting to break the pragmatic of a pronunciation similar to a native and develop a perspective of intelligible communication. For this reason, the theoretical reference of this dissertation presents authors such as Kenworthy (1987), Jenkins (2000), Rajagopalan (2004), Seidlhofer (2005), as well as Leffa (2001), Almeida Filho (2004), Gimenez (2004), among others. These authors emphasize the principles of intelligibility and the reflection of its ideologies in teacher education. To answer the question of this research, the methodological approach involved the use of observation, analysis of the pedagogical political project of the English education course, and a questionnaire. After data collection, qualitative and quantitative analyzes were implemented. According to the result, it was possible to infer that the approaches regarding the phonological system of English are superficially present in the Letras Portugu?s/Ingl?s course of the Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri. Therefore, it is expected that the results of this study can contribute to intensify the direction of intelligibility in the pronunciation of English, taking as an alternative, Language Franca Core proposed by Jenkins (2000).

Ditongos no Português de São Tomé e Príncipe / Diphthongs in the Portuguese of Sao Tome e Principe

O padrão entoacional das sentenças interrogativas da variedade paulista do português brasileiro / The intonational pattern of interrogative sentences of the Paulista variety of Brazilian Portuguese

Carolina Carbonari Rosignoli 26 June 2017 (has links)
This study aims to describe the intonational contour of global and partial, neutral and non-neutral interrogative sentences of the Paulista variety of Brazilian Portuguese (BP). We investigate the relation between tonal events assignment and the formation of prosodic domains. Our goal is to find intonational patterns that codigy pragmatic meaning of different clause types of BP interrogative sentences. Our hypothesis is that the total contour has a fundamental role in codifying pragmatic meaning, besides the nuclear contour. In our work, the corpora analyzed includes controlled speech data obtained in a reading task that exposed interrogative sentences along with context to elicit the production of interrogatives with different pragmatic meanings and semicontrolled speech data recorded in a map task. The description and the prosodic analysis of the intonational phrasing of the interrogative sentences of our corpora were developed according to an integrated view of the Autossegmental Metrical approach within the framework of Intonational Phonology (Pierrehumbert 1980; Pierrehumbert & Beckman 1988; Ladd 1996, 2008; Jun 2005/2014; entre outros) and the Prosodic Phonology framework (Selkirk 1984, 1986, 2000; Nespor & Vogel 1986, 2007). Our analysis take into account previous works developed in this same framework and applied to Portuguese (Frota & Vigário 2000; Tenani 2002; Fernandes 2007a, 2007b, Serra 2009, Toneli 2014; and, more specifically regarding interrogative sentences, Moraes 2008, Truckenbrodt, Sandalo & Abaurre 2009, Castelo 2011, 2016 e Frota et. al. 2015a). The results achieved through this investigation reveal that (i) in general, the nuclear contour of interrogative sentences of the Paulista variety of BP show a rising-falling pattern; (ii) the total contour plays an important role in conveying pragmatic meaning of questions; (iii) there are special prosodic characteristics assigned to the total contour that correspond to specific pragmatic meaning, such as: (a) focus and emphasis marking that varies depending on the pragmatic meaning associated with different phrase types; (b) downstep association to the nuclear contour in neutral interrogative sentences; (c) upstep association to the emphatic element in counter expectation sentences; (d) lower tessiture of the range of variation in the portion of the intonational contour corresponding to the first prosodic word and the nuclear contour in rhetoric questions; (e) differences in tonal density between neutral and non-neutral sentences; among other prosodic characteristics associated with specific pragmatic meaning. These results confirm lead us to achieve our objectives and confirm our main hypothesis.

The Perception of Creaky Voice: Does Speaker Gender Affect our Judgments?

Lee, Kaitlyn E. 01 January 2016 (has links)
This study focuses on the phonetics of creaky voice saliency and the perceptual sociolinguistic indexes that are evoked during creaky voice use. This study consists of two experiments: the first a listener judgment based Likert scale, the second an AXB study. The first experiment used modal and creaky voice statement-of-fact tokens to determine whether the speaker is or isn’t x characteristic (intelligent, feminine, educated, masculine, hesitant, and confident). This study found that both male and female speakers were found to be less intelligent, less educated, less feminine, more masculine, less confident, and more hesitant when using creaky voice phonation as compared to the modal register. Participants also rated male and female speakers as statistically different. During the second experiment the participants listened to continuums that went from modal register to extreme creaky voice (based on F0 levels). Participants performed an AXB task to determine ability at distinguishing levels of creaky voice along the continuum. This study found that participants were less able to correctly detect the level of creaky voice in the female speaker for the lower half of the continuum when compared to the male speaker.

Diftongizace ý > ej v moravských smolných knihách / Diphtongization ý > ej in Moravian Books of Testimonies

Filipová, Jitka January 2020 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with description of the distribution of diphthongization ý > ej in Moravian Books of Testimonies of the 16th-17th century, which represent important sources for description of the period language. The material basis of the work consists of editions of Smolná kniha Nového Města na Moravě, Smolná kniha velkobítešská, Černé knihy práva loveckého na hradě Buchlově, Smolná kniha města Lipníka a Krevní kniha městečka Bojkovic. All expressions containing ej from the original ý as well as expressions in which the secondary hardened ý was diphthongized (cases such as vozejk) and finally words with the preserved original ý were excerpted, recorded in the Microsoft Excel and manually tagged. The distribution of diphthongization was described on the basis of selected linguistic and non-linguistic variables. Finally, the results were compared with the results of previous research and the place of the books of testimonies within the period manuscript and printed production was specified.
